...why all the Keanu hate? I get that this is a big sci-fi remake movie that probably shouldn't be happening and I get that a Gort-less TDTESS is shite-personified but that's not Keanu's fault is it? Is the yak shit coming, aka 'Terminator: Salvation', or whatever the fuck its gonna be called Bale's fault? Keanu isn't a great actor but who gives a shit? For the most part, he's in enjoyable films and he does a passable job in my opinion.

So, seriously, why the hate? Not defending the guy...just curious as to why so much hate?

Wise aliens telling us to knock it off with the warfare shit, it's been so over-used since the original TDTESS.

It's like they're finally doing Neuromancer. Since that book was written, a dozen movies mined most of the ideas from it. We're running out of actresses to play bad ass black vinyl wearing vixens in sunglasses. Too little, too late.

either way. It doesn't exactly have me on the edge of my seat waiting for it, but I don't think it looks awful. I'm not sure why Keanu gets to play every role exactly the same and still be a big deal, but the giant smoke attacking the stadiums, etc looks pretty cool. It's just going to have some terrible "save the planet" where they want us dead because we are killing Earth but in the end we realize our mistakes and lear to co-exist with our planet, which is disappointing. I'll probably still check it out.

CGI mutes the message. And, unlike the anti-war tract of the original, the political diatribe will be belabored (Hollywood worship of the hypocritical energy guzzler, Al Gore). The concluding speech of Robert Wise's original still reverberates (Earth's infectious corruption)--it always will. What's the point of this lame echo?

I don't think he's saying the fate of the Earth depends on Jennifer Connely. He's saying that if the Earth dies, mankind dies, but if mankind dies, the Earth will live.

The trailer looks decent, I think people are just dying to hate this thing because it's a remake of a classic. The trailer does not look better than the original movie, and there's no way the movie will be - it might not even be close. But it could still be a good movie. I don't think remakes are such a bad thing when they don't suck, but they should really only be made if you really think you have a different, interesting approach to the material. If that's what was behind this movie, then even if it sucks it was at least a little worth it, but if it was just about making money, then yeah, it's a stupid idea.

Actually, in the original Klaatu says that his interstellar confederation doesn't care if any planet destroys itself. That is the business of that planet. But if they take the aggression offworld and threaten the safety of the larger galaxy/universe, the Gort robots will reduce the planet to ash. Which is a bit tough on the non-human species, but does end the immediate problem.

I just watched the trailer, and for me, if you take the same tact as I took with the recent Andromeda Strain remake, which is to forget that the title and underlying story is from a classic work on sci-fi goodness, I don't think it looks all that bad. I'm actually interested after watching the trailer, and I was most definitely NOT interested before then. No, I don't expect it to be a classic... no, I don't expect it to be even remotely on the level of the original... but if you just detach in your mind the original from this, pretend the original simply doesn't exist, then for me, the trailer makes me interested at least... just like The Andromeda Strain... it wasn't great, heck it was just OK, but I found myself forcing my brain to pretend there never was an original and all of a sudden it was much more watchable... still flawed in many ways, but better. Same thing here I suspect. By the way, I actually like the "You should let me go" line... I think Keanu actually delivered it well and it looks to be a good scene.

Have any of you read the original short story, "Farewell To the Master?" the template of the original story? And how can you improve on Mr. Robert Wise's work(Winner of 4 ACADEMY AWARDS FOR BEST DIRECTOR whose films have garnished 80 AWARDS in other catagories!) Yeah, this movie needs to be remade. Warner's remake of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" was a big hit last summer too. Blink and you missed it which is the same way this film will go. Development just doesn't get it. Just because a studio owns the rights to a classic, doesn't mean it has to be remade for the unwashed masses. The public is not stupid. Then again, there is that element out there where people have got to stop peeing in the gene pool.

"i think it comes from him generaly coasting for entire career playing himself over and over" You could and should say the same thing about Morgan Freeman. And he's not THAT bad an actor, people blow it out of proportion.

I downloaded the original after learning that this was a remake. Judging by this trailer it's basically a 90% different take on the original. But saying that they probably would have made the original like this if they had the resources back then. And you have to take in mind even the original was taken from a short story so we can't really complain.

KEANU PHONING IT IN IS.....

Exactly what's going on with the character he's playing. His character is inhabiting a foreign entity and thus his reactions are distant, his mannerisms decidedly non-human-like in their responses and familiarity.

I'm no Keanu apologist, but like his role in the Matrix films, they made a good choice using him in this one This new role requires minimal efforts at emoting which only helps him perform Klaatu better.

Klaatu as a walk-in is an interesting idea. While it's been done in a number of sf films the last 20 years, it's always nice to point out to viewers that an alien is not likely to look like a human. As for Keanu, his detachment usually strikes me as a detachment from his own brain rather than a detachment from those around him, but YMMV.

....but I love the short story more. And the two are not the same story. Close, but decidedly different angles, and a BIG difference in the ending. So maybe what we have here is a remake of the short story, not the movie. Kinda like that, ohh, whazzizname - "Frankensomething"? Keanu - who gives a shit, really? I'm with JaPra on this one. When Jeff Bridges did it in "Starman", he was fucking great. I also love weirdo cover versions of "classic" rock songs. Somethin' wrong with that? If the original's got enough juice, there's a lotta wiggle room, y'know? Quit treating this stuff like it's the fucking bible, people......

Leave the freaking classics alone! For the love of God, studios, pull your heads out of your asses and gain some perspective. Rip it off if you must, but do NOT suck the life out of classics like this! Have an original thought! Take a risk! If you love it, leave it alone. Do you just see the heritage of past films as a big bloated tit filled with cash. If you go to see this piece of illconceived money grabbing...check your souls at the door. Maybe that was too much. Is what I am with this. The original is one of my favorite sci-fi movies, and when I heard they were doing a remake i was totally against it. After watching the trailer I will say I am curious. I am not a Keanu hater, I feel he has been average to once in a while above average in everything he has done, though I still have concerns with him taking this classic role. I will see this, but I am not going to go into it thinking it can in any way top the original, so hopefully I won't come away too dissapointed.

I hate it when they make it so advanced technological alien civilizations never had rough spots in their history. Apparently they jumped directly from pond scum to perfume farting angelic beings without all the dirty strife in between. And of course they have an illogical interest in all the lower life forms on the planet that's never explained beyond humans being solidified evil and nature being pure and good. At least in the original the alien's interest was purely out of them not wanting the humans getting in the way of their business. They could have cared less if humanity destroyed their insignificant planet.

I have read the script and found it very lackluster at best. **** Minor Spoilers Ahead **** The central theme instead of nuclear weapons, as in the Wise version, it deals more with Global warming and man's mismanagement of the planet...(You've got to be kidding me)As for the appearance of Gort. It is more like a spider and only appears in one scene. **** End of mild spoilers. Why can't Hollywood just leave the great alone? What's next? A remake of JAWS?

Looks like Keanu Barada Nikto didn't get here in type to avoid the Giant Brains' stupefaction rays. Hopefully the alien menace will be defeated by a lone human's imagination--becoming trapped in a world of gaping plot holes and spelling errors!

Looks like they went overboard with the alien threat. At least the original pretty much left most of the menace to human fear and misunderstanding...and one cycloptic robot with a talent for disintegration.

The global warming threat doesn't make any sesne. How can humanity destroying itself be of any concern to a superior race? Why go with the environmentalist theme when we have a perfectly good war on terror to use as subtext?

For all the people bagging on how bad Keanu will be as Klaatu (and based on the trailer and that interrogation scene it already feels like he'll be playing the dazed stoner alien who comes to Earth to say "Dudes, don't pollute!") keep this thought in mind. The person who initially tried to develop a remake through his production company and wanted to be Klaatu, since he's a big self-confessed sci-fi film fan...

...Was Tim Allen. Though to his credit, as I seem to recall, Allen wanted to play it straight to prove he could do more than comedy.

INVASION/BODY SNATCHERS remake sucked
by thegreatwhatzit
Jul 3rd, 2008
06:02:26 PM
Sucked big time. Special effects compromised the patchy script. The '56 original succeeded as a result of its non-cosmetic appeal: flawless direction, performances, et al (a simple kiss, for God's sake, was a catalyst for the film's most impacting shock). The '78 remake turned the original's strengths into weaknesses, losing all subtlety. As for THE THING; the Carpenter remake was better? Dumb. The original functioned on a non-visceral level (i.e. the circumvention of violence; everything was deliberately hidden in shadow). Carpenter's THING was similarly impressive though it negotiated a polar vision; carnage so graphic that it was pretty much abstract (Universal later admitted that their Ivory Tower brass gauged the film as "pornographic"!). Personally, I think both versions of THE THING kicked ass. As for the DAY/EARTH remake, it's appears to be a lame echo of the original. I admire Jennifer Connelly--conceding to a breast reduction because her cans earned more attention than her acting aptitude. She'll be acting for another quarter of a century. Pam Anderson's "fame" concluded centuries ago; now she's the "new Edy Williams" (a parasitic p.r. whore). As for Robert Wise, check-out his wonderful BODY SNATCHER with Boris Karloff and Henry Daniell (the film was considered rather provocative during its original release)--performances fuel the movie. Wonder when some asshole will remake this classic?

De Palma was tagged to a BODY SNATCHERS remake (shudder)??; it would have been another blood bath (the Legion of Decency branded the original movie with a B-rating ["Morally objectionable in part for all"] because of the "violent" content!). Who could possibly substitute for Karloff (Cabman Gray is, disputably, the best performance of his career). And who could substitute for the very underrated Henry Daniell? I sincerely wish you best of luck with THE ENCHANTED COTTAGE (the "new" RKO notwithstanding). Take care, amigo.

I don't think "The Day the Earth Stood Still" is really a remakable film to begin with. But I am already tired of the disaster/sci-fi film with a global warming message movies already. Besides, the general theme of this movie has been overdone by every Twilight Zone clone series that it is too cliche at this point.

that this movie was going to be a huge pile of shit, but now I'm actually really looking forward to it. The only thing that concerns me is the shot of the little kid. Little kids are generally a bad sign for any movie that looks like it may try to play it straight and serious since it generally means the filmaker is trying to reach out to a younger audience, and that in turn means the movie won't play it straight and serious - which, based on this trailer, it wants to be. There's a lot of awesomeness potential, but also a lot of fuck-up potential. I'm so torn!

Fox wont mind if you call it a turkey. Movie companies dont mind the internet. Its the rest of the press they hate. more and more Movie companies are becoming more censorius in their attitude to movie press. They used to hold Press screenings 10 days before films came out. now its three days, if at all. ie film companies just release the movie without a press screening. but then there is whole thing of selective positive reviews. and in the UK they have clamped down on that sort of thing.

So if this needless remake also goes 'inconvenient truth' on me, in addition to being completely superfluous, I will build a tank from granola on the frame of microbus and . . . well, I haven't got the rest figured out yet, but it will be horrific. I think this must be how it is. Because it seems like they enjoy ruining movies more than any other studio. All you people crying about the hate should shut the fuck up. The original had a solid point. Now this movie Gort is a spider robot with one scene and the message is about global warming. You know Hollywood is pounding this subject so hard I wouldn't be surprised if people reacted the opposite and started littering and wasting ever more energy just to spite Hollywood. This looks like fucking trash. Will it do well sure it will be pg-13 and idiot teens will go see anything that looks remotely "scary" so it will do okay but that does not mean it isn't shit. Because it is.

Also, you're going to see a lot of movies with an ecological theme because it's a popular social concern/fad and Hollywood is generally left of center. Just because a movie has an ecological theme doesn't make it bad ("WALL*E" comes to mind). Hating Hollywood for being liberal is like hating the sky for being blue.

Reliefs: - It's a decent trailer, at least for the first half or so. - Keanu's perennial imitation of a totem pole actually seems to work well for the role of Klaatu. First time in a long time I've seen him deliver a line without making me cringe. - Since the trailer doesn't actually explain much of what it shows, the following worries may turn out to be completely unfounded. Worries: - Gort won't be in it and we're all just victims of a bait and switch. - Gort is in it, but he sucks. - Those scenes of destruction. Unless they're a "what if" sort of dream sequence, I don't like the idea that stuff gets destroyed. Either humanity doesn't "learn its lesson" and gets a smack-down, or they need to be given an example of ET's awesome power first, which destroys the requirement of quasi-religious "faith" which I always thought was integral to the original. - That spherical spaceship, IF it IS his spaceship, looks silly. - For the Earth to survive she has to die? What sort of cheesy Hollywood plot point is THAT?!?! Might as well replace Jennifer Connoley with Charlize Theron release the movie on a sweet day in November. Personally, I'd rather see Keanu try to make a movie out of Stranger In A Strange Land than bother with a TDTESS remake.

The Founder: "If it was a little white kid..."
by Big Dumb Ape

Founder, BaltimoreJack said (quote:) "This trailer is playing before HANCOCK because Will Smith's kid is in the movie. He's the Black kid (obviously) in the trailer. I wonder if he says 'Aww hell nah!' at least once in this", to which you then replied (quote): "I can list a dozen things that I think is wrong with the film, but Will Smith's kid isn't one of them. Someone always gotta make something racial no matter what. If it were a little white kid you wouldn't have made that 'Aww Hell nah' comment. Phucking loser."

Well, in defense of Baltimore (who I don't even know), come on, let's leave ourselves a little breathing room for levity and not get too touchy or politically correct. His post WASN'T about race. He only made the comment BECAUSE that is Will Smith's now cliched and trademark groan-inducing line, and more importantly BECAUSE it really is his kid. So his post wasn't about race -- it was about the far more obvious connection of father & son as big screen actors. And personally, I think making a joke about THAT is okay.

For that matter, you also said in your posts: "It appears not even a 10 year old kid is safe here" and then followed that with "Usually don't insult the asses here, but kids should be off limits." Just out of curiosity, has that been your view whenever anyone here has bagged on Jake Lloyd's performance in PHANTOM MENACE? Look, here's my two cents: if an adult ever picked on a little kid in real life, I'd have no problem with the adult getting his head handed to him. In real life, kids deserve all the protection they can get in today's truly fucked-up world. All you have to do is turn on the news to realize that.

On the other hand, when you make a 10-year old kid a CORE CHARACTER in a movie, I definitely think his casting, his looks, his mannerisms, his abilities, his acting...in short, how well he actually fits in the movie...is ripe for commentary. And that's simply because that little kid (the one you say should be "off limits") could ultimately be what tears down an entire film around him. So harming a kid, you're right, absolutely off limits. But reviewing a kid or criticizing him -- certainly one cast in a central role in a $100 million dollar sci-fi production -- sorry, but I would consider that fair game. Besides, if Jaden actually wants to pursue acting and (ideally) create a sustained career like his Dad managed to forge, better that he should start learning now to develop a thick skin for all the criticisms yet to come his way...

if he saw this vers. of TDESS.

Seriously, this movie MIGHT be o.k. And that is mostly the issue. Some of the visuals do have a faux 50's B feel, but mostly they have a Spielberg left-overs feel. I concede the movie might be fun, but the nature and delvery of the message is important as to how the movie succeeds or fails. And right now, Im thinking it's probably going to fall somewhere in between vaguely important but not accentuated enough to be offensive. And as a result, it will have less impact.

I think defending remakes, unless they really bring something else to the table, and sometimes they do, is a bad idea. Do we really just want to keep seeing MORE remakes?

I just finished seeing WALL-E yesterday, and while referencing plenty of classic sci-fi, it was an original vision with a message that I felt was well played. That movie was adding itself to the pantheon of great sci-fi as it went along. And it was original.

Strangely, if this thing hasn't be torn apart a thousand different ways by everyone when it is released, and there is enough there to sufficiently pull me into the theater I'll actually be hoping that veers far from the original and gives us a unique take with the spirit of the first intact and I'll be hoping it's good.

Right now, my feeling is no, but then again I had reason to believe that Spielberg had nailed War of the Worlds and that it was a sure thing as far as remakes went, and well...I was wrong.

the true motives or feelings of people that post here. When ever a Black actor or black based project is mentioned here you see the comments poor out. This has happened to many times for it to rubbed off as me or others overreacting. You ask about Jake Lloyd and where was i at? Not here posting, but since you sound as though you've been here a while then you like me should have seen that "Ahh Hell Nah" comment attached to more then just Will Smith. It's been attached to a few black actors here, even that Efijor Chitiwal guy or how ever you spell his name, although I don't recall him ever sprewing in any of the movies I seen him in. I see no harm in Smith's kid in the film or him being the one to drag it down. I'm 100 percent positive that if this movie sucks and that's a strong possibility with FOX at the helm, it won't be little Jaden Smith's fault.

firstly, go fuck yourself. secondly, I AM BLACK. i wasn't making fun of Jaden Smith, as an actor, as a child,as a Black kid, or anything else. i was merely making a joke about Will Smith's tagline that he has used in several movies. i have liked Will Smith ever since his Prince of Bel Air days and i have been a fan of his hip-hop (i'm 37 so i go way back), and i see pretty much every movie he comes out with. his wife is from my hometown (Baltimore), and i genuinely think they are great role models for my race and i always enjoy watching them interviewed be it with or without their children. i thought Jaden was very good in The Pursuit of Happyness. i agree with you, Founder, that many times over the years there have been some horribly racist talkbacks and i have gotten into many, MANY, back-and-forths because i will defend my people and myself whenever i read some of the idiotic things that are said on this site. i apologize to you if my joking got lost in the translation, but i don't apologize for telling you to go fuck yourself. you don't know anything about me but chose to attack me, so i guess i have to stoop to your level. Wonder how many of you would want to be in his place uh? This is tiring! Have you ever watched River's Edge? or I Love you to Death? Even Bill and Ted or Scanner? How can one be 'Ted' and 'Neo' and still getting this type of "he is always the same" backlash? The man has enough interesting qualities that keep people attentions to him. Period. Acting is not only about to make cry faces on screen. You need to have more. Keanu has that "more". I think that after a 20+ years old career it's time to some to recognize the man came and stayed. Many didn't manage that, but he did. Live.With.That. And yes, remakes can be made by the same dudes that made the originals. This whole "Burn Hollywood", "lack of new ideas", and endless blablabla of the remake hater gestapo has no effect whatsover. This Hollywood is the same Hollywood who made the original movie. Cinema is about reinvention, over and over. No one is destroying the copies of the original, on the contrary, the remake might bring more viewers to watch the original, something that would stay only among some sci-fi geeks if it wasn't getting 'remade'. Younger audiences would never give the original a chance, what can happen if the new movie manages to have enough appeal among them. So, the whinning is tired, dated and immature. IMO.

Take the ending of Hancock for instance.... gee who'da thought he'd lose his powers and almost get killed by a normal man with a gun? It's like how science fiction movies always find an excuse to show everything looking pretty much the same as it does now.... stupid budget bullshit!

A) Thanks for the Careless, Unannounced Spoiler. Wanna hear some spoilers about yer Mom? I got a million of 'em, and maybe I'll share them with everybody on this site. Asshole. B) The rest of you ain't exactly the Deep Thinkers I could have hoped for. The "No Remakes" chant gets pretty fucking sickening pretty fast, as well. Look, if there can be dozens of interpretations of original stories such as "Frankenstein", "Dracula", "Moby Dick", "Black Beauty", "The Call Of The Wild", "The Wizard Of Oz" and other literary works - then there can also be another version of "Farewell To The Master" - Got That? Stop bringing yer goddamned spoiled-rotten, "Oh-I've-Seen-This-Before" preconceived crybaby bullshit to every topic and remember, those of you with siblings, that maybe your parents just kept trying, over and over, working with the same source material, hoping to get at least ONE version right. Pinheads.

I like the look of the nanostorm disintegration, but Keanu Reeves had no odd tics or non-humanness about him.
