By which I mean it's a tad snarky and attempts to place some sort of distance of credibility between you and your readers. Maybe "your readers" isn't exactly an accurate term for what you and most of the CHUD staff seem to imagine is a swarming horde of kids with no film education who are discovering all your favorite films at an alarming rate, but only for the purposes of name dropping them. The "You've Got It All Wrong" series was a good example of this, as legitimate arguments were sidelined to take cheap shots at the fanbase for the film being discussed. Read this sentence, please: "Unfortunately, the newfangled Herzog worship tends to stop at RESCUE DAWN - and the fact that he's so unflappable and German!" This is what I'm talking about, conjecture that is only in your writeup to prove you are in the cool kids club. Part of the reason why I kind of prefer AICN to CHUD is that everyone around here is so positive all the time, and you really get the sense that the contributors love film. I stopped getting that at CHUD recently, if you want my opinion summed up better than I can muster read Vern's thoughts on your Indy 4 tag-team post mortem throwdown or whatever. They can be found in his Indy 4 review. Quint's Movie A Day, Moriarty's One Thing I Love Today, Harry's orgasmic reviews, these guys all love to share their appreciation for the treasures they find and the classics we should already know about. You're a good writer, I just find the whole "I'm more knowledgeable than you" critical stance really obnoxious. Just some constructive criticism for you there Friendo. P.S. while most of his best films (some of which I consider among the best films of all time) were pre-Fitzcarraldo, I'd also call Cobra Verde, Dark Glow of the Mountains, Wodaabe, Lessons of Darkness, Little Dieter Needs to Fly, My Best Fiend, Invincible, Where the Green Ants Dream, Rescue Dawn, Grizzly Man and by the looks of it Encounters at the End of the World "worthwhile". And there's still a handful of his work in the last 25 years I haven't gotten around to seeing yet.

I hate these "you all should temper your enthusiasm" articles. What's the purpose, other than to say, "Pipe down you - I was here first and anyway you don't understand?" Are there other narrative films that you're talking about other than Rescue Dawn (which I haven't seen yet)? I gathered that since Cobra Verde (awesome) he's been making documentaries and sometimes acting. I haven't seen all of his recent docs but Little Dieter Needs to Fly, White Diamond, and Grizzly Man, are all great. Certainly people are enthusastic about him because of his personality, and his obvious love of cinema (which he shares with lots of people on this site). But once they dig deeper into his films there are some gems to be found even in his later stuff. From what I've seen, I'd argue that his later documentaries are at least just as good if not better now.

It's the fact that it's produced by Millenium Films and starring Nicholas Cage. Anyone remember the last remake starring Nicholas Cage produced by Millenium? "Wicker Man," which was also directed by an arthouse director (Neil LaBute) who seemed to be an odd yet possibly inspired choice. On the other hand, Herzog generally self-finances and produces his films, so I don't know if they'll give him some room to breathe or try to micromanage him, in which case we might be reading the headline "Werner Herzog Feeds Avi Lerner to Bear."

Val Kilmer is still my favorite actor and I've always thought highly of Nic Cage so this just became an absolute must for me. In a strange turn of events I've only really seen Herzog's fictional stuff, mostly with Klaus Kinski, who I also love. So the man knows how to harness crazy or better yet set it off. I'm suddenly very interested in this movie although I can't imagine it been anything like or having anything to do with the first, which I also thought was great. btw, what is this jambocast stuff? It's annoying.

rest of the fucked up shit that went down in the movie, but the song completely worked with the movie because of the raw, flithy lyrics. Coupled with the hard-driving Kashmir sample, it set the mood in at least 3-4 scenes that I remember.

On the other hand I have zero confidence that Nicholas Cage will be good in it. It seems easy enough. Just do another story about a corrupt cop. It's not like this movie is going to make a mint on people loving and remembering the original. What is the point? And this could be good anyway. The original isn't a perfect film as far as I'm concerned. There is room for improvement but I still think it's all just weird. I don't get what the point is at all.

Where some dudes approached Herzog at Cannes and asked him if he wanted to do a Bad Lieutenant remake and somehow this made some sort of sense to him in a James Bondey New Orleans Port of Call type way that none of us understand yet and now he is going to do whatever the fuck he wants regardless of what anyone says. Anyone includes the dudes that approached him at Cannes, Val Kilmer, Nicholas Cage, Abel Ferrara, Mr. Beaks or whoever. I assume that's what's going on. Unless this is in fact going to be a Zak Penn movie about Herzog making a Bad Lieutenant remake starring Nicholas Cage, which would in fact make more sense. Whatever happens I have a feeling that once the movie comes out people will stop complaining that it's a remake and wonder why it even shares the same title.

Thank you for that. I'm not trying to be contrarian or elitist or anything like that; I'm just tired of encountering young movie fans who blindly worship Herzog as an idea rather than an artist. It's great that he's still around making movies (mostly documentaries) that matter to him, but the work's gotten chillier and chillier as far as I'm concerned (GRIZZLY MAN aside). I guess I should be encouraged that RESCUE DAWN was at least engaging (when INVINCIBLE and the sci-fi movie were lifeless and mediocre), but the beauty of Ferrara's BAD LIEUTENANT is that it's punk rock. And Herzog's non-documentary features are so rigorously conventional anymore. Here's to being surprised! (BTW, nothing I can do about the tenor of the reviews of late. I've been underwhelmed by most films this summer. Still gushed pretty good over HELLBOY 2, didn't I? And a second go-round w/ WALL-E wiped away all the caveats I'd voiced after my initial viewing. I have a heart, damn it!)

Thanks for the response, I think I was a bit harsh but it was mostly just to get your attention. I feel where you're coming from, because it can be sort of annoying when the uninitiated pick up on something obscure and start championing it without much knowledge. I just find it almost equally annoying when people adopt the attitude that they found something first and it's spoiled if other people find out about it. I know that's not you, in your writeup you said it's great if people discover the old Herzog stuff, and I agree with that. I just really prefer the approach Quint seems to be taking right now, which is more like "hey, check out all this old forgotten stuff, isn't it great?" He's admitting the gaps in his film knowledge and encouraging his readers to discover stuff with him. There's no judgement passed on anyone's credibility, aside from a few ass-hats in the talkbacks. Which is kind of cool, in my opinion. And don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that you have to be positive about everything. I don't mean positive in the sense of your reaction to specific films, if they deserve heavy criticism then fire away. I have no interest in Wanted or Hancock, so your reviews kind of confirmed the vibes I got from the trailers. I haven't seen Wall E yet and I want to so I haven't read your review. Same with Hellboy 2. I didn't mean to make it sound like I didn't enjoy your writing on CHUD, either. But it's getting crotchety over there, and it started before you left. I also happen to completely disagree with your assessment that Herzog has been mostly irrelevant in between Fitzcarraldo and Grizzly Man, but my main issue was with the mostly irrelevant discussion of Herzog's fanbase in your article. I actually liked Invincible and thought it was at least worth a watch, because it was an interesting story and I hadn't really seen anything like it before. I assume the sci-fi movie you're talking about is The Wild Blue Yonder, which I will agree was lifeless and mediocre, certainly not his best work but I would argue it has enough interesting moments to be worth at least one viewing for a Herzog fan. I'd say that about a lot of his output I didn't mention as well, such as Bells of the Deep or Wings of Hope or Echoes From a Sombre Empire. In fact there are only a handful of Herzog films I've seen that I would recommend avoiding completely: Huey's Sermon, God's Angry Man, Jag Mandir. Probably a few more I can't think of off the top of my head. You have to admire his dedication to providing new images and new stories, exploring weird corners of the globe in a constant effort to capture "the ecstatic truth". I have no idea what to think of this Bad Lieutenant thing he's doing, who knows how it will turn out. But I think the man's career speaks for itself, and I don't think he's so much winding down as a creative force as experiencing highs and lows in subjects that interest him. He loves film, that much is clear, and it shows in everything he does. OK, so he hasn't made a Fitzcarraldo, Aguirre, Stroszek, Nosferatu, Kaspar Hauser, Fata Morgana or Even Dwarves Started Small in a while, but honestly who could keep up a track record like that?
