CGI is so slick looking, no matter how hard the try. The Goon should look more like a Bakshi cartoon. Not necessarily rotoscoped, but... I dunno... It's a tough one.

Perlman is too recognizable as Hellboy...
by wookie1972
Jul 2nd, 2008

My first thought for The Goon is John DiMaggio (aka Bender), but again he would be too recognizable. For Franky it can only be Steve Buscemi, now that Burgess Meredith has passed on.

You miss my point. Perlman is now known mostly as Hellboy. (he does the voice in the cartoon too). It would be far too distracting, like Christian Bale playing Superman. Maybe Patrick Warburton?

by Neil_the_Sheep
Jul 2nd, 2008
03:47:52 PM
yeah..I hear ya. Patrick Warburton would be cool...I really like him...but he's kinda of that guy you always recognize...which might have the same effect as Perlman, yes?
but other than the Tick, Warburton isn't associated with a comic
by wookie1972
Jul 2nd, 2008
03:50:12 PM
... whereas Perlman IS Hellboy. If Hellboy hadn't been a hit, or was released awhile ago, it would have been different. I'd say the same about Michael Chiklis (after all, The Goon is very similar to Ben Grimm).
Actually, Michael Clarke Duncan isn't a bad idea...

Eric Powell is an ass
by Sithdan
Jul 2nd, 2008
03:56:31 PM
Eric Powell, the creator of the Goon comic, lives in Lebanon, Tennessee, which is about 35 miles away from where I live in Nashville. He was recently scheduled to appear for an autograph session at a local library. After fans gathered there and waited patiently for two hours, a library employee appeared and said Powell was a no-show. A few days later Powell allegedly apologized for standing his fans up and re-scheduled his comic book signing for another date. Guess what? Once again, he stood up the 50 fans or so who waited several long hours to meet their little hero. To say they were disappointed would be an understatement. They were livid. A large contingent of the crowd traveled more than 100 miles to be there. I’m no Goon fan. I was there as a reporter to cover his book signing for the lifestyles section of the paper. When that SOB stood me up twice, I swore never to again cover another book signing. I had more important things to do anyway rather than waste my time in some library, taking pictures of some nobody who draws funny papers.

Warburton isn't nearly as associated with The Tick as Perlman is with Hellboy, which will only increase if Golden Army is a hit, which certainly looks like a possibility. Besides, if they were smart they would have a Hellboy cameo like they did in The Goon comic. Vin Diesel would actually not be bad either.

"David Fincher and CGI adaptations do NOT mix. Who else remembers the Rendezvous with Rama hype fiasco a few years ago that went NOwhere." You're critisizing a non existent movie? One of the reasons Rama isn't getting off the ground is that it's still too expensive to do it Fincher's way. The studio isn't willing to pony up $150,000,000+ unless they jazz the story up in the worst way possible. Now if Benjamin Button makes a shedload of cash that might change. Anyway, I don't think Fincher options graphic fiction because he's immediately planning on filming it. He likely only optioned Black Hole to keep Alex Aja away from it.

TodBrowning - Chinatown's an absolute belter! It's a lot more serious than the previous books and answers some questions regarding Goon's past. If you've got the money then go get it as soon as you can. If you ain't got the money then I would never, ever recommend that you use a bit torrent service to download it and then buy it later. I agree with previous comments. It is a little known fact that an apocryphal papyrus of the Book of Revelation described misspelling of kitchen activities as the Fifth Horseman of the Apocalypse. This movie will bring destruction on us all. Pray for Fincher to leave this one in development hell, for the sake of us, our children, and our children's children, and their pets.

ive stated repeatedly in here that "the goon" would make a good comic to film project - most recently in the "jonah hex/tom jane" thread - i called it, been calling it - now its happening - i hope they dont fuck this up - the goon is one of the best comics out now - pearlman would be great as the voice of the goon, but he is already too recognized as hb - even in the animated hb movies

One said Jason Alexander as Frankie (The_Inside_Joke) and another said Stephen Colbert as Dr. Alloy (wookie1972) Get these guys on the production team!! Excellent casting!!!

For the Goon, some of you are casting visually for a CG movie. Just cause a guy might look the part, doesn't mean the voice acting will be the best. (Tim Curry as The Joker in BTAS?) Throw it to Mark Hamil, that dude is a hell of a voice actor... I love The Goon!!

He was the greatest, unsung Goon. Ironic, cos he had a wonderful, rich timbre to his sonorous tenor voice. All this excitement about Spike Milligan, Peter Sellers..and did any of THEM host Songs of Praise? No. Didn't think so.

... is that an Arrested Development reference? If you're trying to suggest that Will Arnett should be involved in this project then I'm in complete agreement. Dunno who he could play though, don't think he's right for The Goon but they should definitely get him in there somewhere. And, cheers for the kind words Redbox. Jason Alexander is the voice I hear when I'm reading it, imagine him saying 'Knife to the eye!' in full-on George mode. Although I agree that Steve Buscemi could be a good fit.

I love THE GOON. Only, I'm not sold on the whole CG thing. Why can't they do it live action. I wouldn't even mind a SIN CITY, 300, THE SPIRIT style take on it. But you can do this live action. Del Toro, Peter Jackson or even Terry Gilliam could do justice to this. Someone with sick, twisted sense of humor but with a good eye for camera and style. CGI still isn't right yet. It's fine for cartoony things like SHREK and WALL-E, but for live action stuff ... like BEOWULF ... everything still looks too rubbery and 2 dimentional. Give Goon something real to pummel. And who wants to CGI zombies. Not me. I want to see ooze and rot dripping from open soars and exposed bone. It's not as effective when it's done through a computer.
