Sorta the thing now. Popped up in road trip and served as the HOLY SHIT of that movie. Recently, we had that great jaw fuck up in The Orphanage (wanted to love that film... but sadly it fell apart at the end) and between them was the great jaw fuck up tongue ripper, Dead Silence... a film that I liked the idea of, but just fell short of working. What is with horror movies fucking up mouthes not working lately? Why can't we have nasty images AND god horror?

Actually we might be onto something: trailer length movies on the internet. I would have payed fifty cents to watch that. Multiply that times the number of people who read this article and you got what...a few hundred bucks? Not bad for 30 seconds of video. Anyway, the best part was the fox logo and the regency logo in a mirror image. Clever, that. Otherwise, it looks like this movie should have been called Jack Bauer's Happening.

We completely agree on this point. I was reading all these posts going, seriously? You guys LIKE Aja's previous stuff? Not only was the "twist" in Haute Tension obvious, but it doesn't make sense in light of the rest of the movie. It's one of those things that if you go back and rewatch, it REALLY doesn't work. And if the people in The Hills Have Eyes were any stupider... I don't have anything to follow that up with, cause they were all so stupid (although not even close to as bad as the sequel - the mind boggles at how all this shit gets made). I've just never found Aja's work scary, or even all that interesting. That being said, this trailer totally sucked me in. I'll be there. Let's just hope I'm not apologizing to my boyfriend like I had to after dragging him to The Hills Have Eyes (and Dead Silence, and ...).

I believe you're talking about Carpenter's PRINCE OF DARKNESS. First of all, that wasn't Kiefer, and second of all: That movie fucking rocks. The ending you describe as "uh okay what did that actually mean?", it was "holy fucking shit now I'm really scared shitless" for me. Of course I saw it before 1999 so now it's dated, but still an awesome movie.

On the other hand, despite his involvement with P2, I really trust Aja so I'll be there opening day. I got a weird POLTERGEIST III kinda vibe with all those reflections rebelling against their originals, but it looks much more promising than your average horror crap we get these days. (I hope he doesn't overuse the CGI and keep it cool like he did in Hills).

The Orphanage...

Tried to go the Pan rout, but didn't have the right story to make it work. I like the twist and all, but my problem is the bag kid. They completely drop that plot. We are to understand he killed all the kids, that he was attracted to her, and NONE of that is resolved at the ending. He's sitting beside her with all the other kids THAT HE KILLED and it's all peachy. Um... No. Not peachy. Conflict not resolved. A lot of great ideas building up into something that just got better and better and... it couldn't tie it all up at the end, so they tried to go with the Pan ending, but it didn't quite make sense for this film. Perhaps if it ended on a dark note... like... The Dark. But the hey, let's all huddle down and read a story with the happy music playing thing bugged me. And I'm fine with a twisted but happy ending, but the bag kid needed to be resolved somehow in a more convincing manner. Otherwise, great movie.

Indeed. Another great jaw rip. Yet again, a limp to lame film. It's like a deal with the devil or something. One+ great gore effect that will make you squirm = an otherwise bleh movie. Hope this is the exception. And yeah, forgot about The Grudge, that had a nasty one too... if a little silly.

in the Orphanage, which really worked for me. Maybe I missed that part, or you misinterpreted? I don't know. [SPOILER - if you haven't seen it] I thought the ending was actually pretty dark with her killing herself to be with her dead son, but I will totally agree that the music was way off. I even commented on that at the time, that the music was far too cheerful for the ending. It didn't ruin it for me though.

Hmmm, perhaps I am mistaken. Though I am pretty sure that was how it worked out. When she found their bones. I'm almost positive she said he took revenge on them. If he didn't kill them all, then who did? Either way, they did screw him over royally and he did seem to be involved in his mother's death and was attracted to her. I just can't by that (dead or not) they would all gather together and be OK at the end without any of these things explained more. She killed her son by accident, granted, but too many plot holes remain, even if my memory is shot to hell on this one. As for creepy factor, I agree necgray. The jaw fuck up was also well composed, but over all it was more a good ghost story than a horror movie. Reminded me of other horror movies I like, such as The Changeling, but never had a good holy shit moment. No wheelchair of doom. It's funny, for all it's flaws, I can't stop thinking about how much I liked The Dark. Anyway, wherever we fall on The Orphanage, I in no way mean that it was a bad as the other mentioned jaw rip/fuckup films. Just disappointed me, as much because I was getting into it's great build as AICN's gushing over it.

Although I agree with both you and Neosamurai about the fact that it wasn't creepy, I did feel an eerie undertone throughout. I don't think I read the gushing on AICN, so I didn't have a whole lot of expectations going in. I thought it was a good little ghost story (with the counting scene being one that was quite creepy). Neosamurai, man I think I need to rewatch that flick - how confused was I? I thought that the bag kid led the son into the basement knowing he would fall and die, so that he would have more company. Actually, I think I thought that's how all the kids died. I must have been really tired that night.

Well, we're sorta both right about that. It's tricky because of where bag boy ends and the kid dressed as bag boy begins, but he does run down to bag boys cellar and then his mother accidentally barricades him in, then he falls through the stairs. And yes, the suicide and the boy's dead body are creepy, but that music is like a bandaid on a severed femoral artery. Just made me frustrated.

Of THE ORPHANAGE. And by you guys I mean Neosamurai. And the rest who hasn't explained the movie right. Spoilers: THe bag kid didn't kill anybody, it was his mother. It goes like this: orphan kids bully the bag kid, they accidentally kill him. Bag kid's mother poisons the rest of the kids... And hide their bones in the cellar. Nobody notice the crime since the kids are orphans. When Laura comes back, she tries to get the bones back... Only Laura's kid (also an orphan) sees the ghosts... And also dies accidentally. What follows is the mother trying to get his kid back. And getting him in that sad awesome ending. (She also got to do what he wanted: to take care of those nobody wanted). You welcome.

Remaking into the mirror , seems pretty pointless. It's an okay film at best , that kind of blends in with a lot of other minor asian horrors.Apart from it's gimmicky mirror tricks {which poltergeist 3 or was it 4? seemed to pioneer} It just doesn't seem worth a remake.

It was awhile ago and I'll happily admit if I'm wrong (especially when it means a movie was better than I first thought it was). I have absolutely no memory of any scene where the bag kid's mother is revealed to be the killer, but I think I got interrupted a couple of times viewing it and probably missed that bit. So... ok. However, is the mother's death ever clear? I'm just wondering because that still strikes me as odd. I mean, did her son kill her (if so, why?) or the kids? If it wasthe kids, wouldn't the son be all Jason out of the lake on them? Not trying to to drag this on, and yes, I'll just go and rewatch it sometime, but that final still leaves me a little confused. Too happy. Though there is something kinda funny about a Hollywood happy times suicide.

Neo. (Spoilers for THE ORPHANAGE)
by Gilkuliehe
Jul 2nd, 2008
02:17:10 PM
The mother killed herself. Not the kids. The kids were not aware of her or them being dead. And yes, it was clear. You see a plate in the orphanage that states "In loving memory of Laura, Simón and the kids". There's also a little detail: The husband gave Laura a little necklace... He said to her "I'm not giving this to you, I'm borrowing it. You give it back to me when Simon and you are together again". That's why he finds it in the end... and smiles. He knows his wife found what she was looking for.

And regarding the music I must admit it worked for me. It was a "Hollywood happy ending" but all around a suicide and a bunch of dead kids. And as my grandmother likes to say "That's fucked up, man". You should rewatch it. Even after all the hype I thought the movie was amazing. The sequence where Geraldine Chaplin tries to contact the ghosts scared the crap out of me.

There were no ghosts. They were in the mother's head as she was going crazy and rationalizing her son's disappearance. You can pretty much take all supernatural elements out of the movie and it makes sense.

The kids "sneaking up on her" at the end were in her mind as her back was turned. She never turned around and "saw" them. Also, the items that were left behind that led her to her dead son were left behind by the son BEFORE he died. It was the game he wanted his mom to play with him.

That's why the movie is brilliant...it works as a "ghost story" but is really a psychological horror of a mom going batshit crazy after her son disappears.

was there a poltergeist 4? I don't remember that? I thought the little girl died while making the third one (or is that one of the movie urban legends?). Chicken or the egg: are mirrors kind of freaky because so many horror and suspense flicks use them in creepy ways, or do so many horror flicks use them cause it's inherently creepy that there could be something in the reflection that you were unaware of (or doesn't exist)? I know I don't like mirrors in my room, but I can't remember if that predates my horror watching years. Just curious.

Forget wheezy dinosaurs like Pam Anderson (anybody see BLONDE & BLONDER, the "comedy" that matched Anderson with another chestnut, Denise Richards? Didn't think so. Both has-beens volunteered to pose nude for Playboy as a p.r. coup. Do you smell desperation?). Amy Smart is underrated and hot (because she isn't a Spears/Lohan diva, she forfeits tabloid visibility). MIRRORS reminds me of an episode from the classic THRILLER series called "The Hungry Glass" (written by Robert Bloch. If the movie is HALF as good as the original b&w episode, it'll be well worth the price of admission).
