No offense, but either you're a Brit or you have a short memory. Ferrell started on SNL as the Phil Hartman utility-player of his era and played tons of characters. I venture he can do just about any accent under the sun. At least effectively enough for a silly comedy. I'd much rather see him stretch in this way than keep on playing the same doofus he's been 'assaying' for the last four or five films.

Seriously, that's your name? ...I don't think it means his stock is falling - I think he wants to be more like a Peter Sellers-style comedic actor who shows up in fun supporting roles. A little of him goes a long way, and he's better when he changes it up, so it seems like a good idea to me.

Not that any of the people doing it are bad. I just think that they don't have the sensibilities for something like this. Cohen and Aptow are at the top of their games, but their game has a lot of dick jokes and Dr. Holmes doesn't remotely touch that world. Farrell can deliver very well when he's not playing another tired variation on his "Macho Idiot" or "Manchild" routine. (Like Robin William he needs someone to reign in his inner... himself.) No, I just don't see it.

Is the one big problem I have with this. I'm fully on board for Sacha to surprise me with something I'd assume he'd pull off. Farrell... off of Semi-Pro... playing Dr. Watson in any capacity screams trouble to me. I have not seen EVERY Homles movie out there, but I've seen enough to feel confident that he's never shown me anything that resonates with any past interpretation of the doctor that I've seen. I can see Sacha dropping the dick joke and trying something different, but for Farrell to do anything remotely interesting with this role, would really, REALLY surprise me.

...one of the most underrated movies of the last years. An excellent and hilarious satire with Sacha Baron Cohen in an Oscar-worthy performance (stole the whole thing). Read my lips, SBC is going to follow the Robin Williams Oscar route: several noms or almost noms (GG wins) till they hand it one for a just notable drama performance.

Another Comedy version of Sherlock Holmes...like we haven't had enough of them already. There's a little known TV movie out there some where with John Cleese and Arthur Lowe as our eponymous heroes which was pretty funny but, in most cases, a comedy version of Holmes feels like Superman 3, its just an inappropriate style for this character.

Well, I say don't forget even though it was the worst thing they ever did, then again, given the high standards of their work that could easily mean it turned out better than this will. I guess Without a Clue was OK, I picked up a free DVD of it about a week ago, but generally feature length Holmes comedies aren't a great idea. Oh, and Step Brothers looks like the stupidest movie of the decade. I mean that as a compliment BTW.

Ferrell is consistently the funniest person making movies today. Anchorman, Blades of Glory, Talladega Nights, not to mention his numerous cameos and walk-ons which tend to be funnier than the entire film surrounding them in most cases. I think a lot of you haters have him confused with Jim Carey.

Like most comedic actors today, they hit big early and repeat the same character over and over again in movies until he becomes a tired cliche (see also Adam Sandler). I used to rush to see his movies. Now I barely can summon the ability to care to rent them. I think Land of the Lost is going to be an abomination. We have already seen his over the top british characters on SNL. I think they worked at times in a 5-10 minute sketch, but for a 2 hour movie? Apatow does have a lot of quality actors in his stable who might be able to pull of Watson better. Although physically he might not be right for the part, I would rather see Paul Rudd (probably the most underrated actor in Apatow's stable) as Watson. Jonas Hill would be amazing as Watson (ok, kidding).

Who wants to take a bet that Dr. Watson (Ferrel) will manage to take off most if not all of his clothes, stand before Holmes and make some comment about how good he looks while the "wink-wink" in-joke is that he doesn't. Sasha Cohen is doing somewhat revolutionary comedy at this point (he's kind of a modern version of Kauffman, up to a point anyway). Apatow has some ability to write funny dialog but he's no Ivan Reitman, nor Harold Ramis for that matter. Not even close (one day maybe). More like John Hughes perhaps. Will Ferrel, on the other hand, is the biggest one-trick jagoff in Hollywood next to neo-Eddie Murphy (Shrek-annoying or some movie where he plays ten or twelve roles with at least 3 or 4 in fatsuits, I say neo-Eddie as his old stand-up act and SNL work was pure genius). I've seen Ferrel do real work (Melinda and Melinda) and he's certainly capable, but he usually (always) ends up naked and screaming and there's a sport involved...or maybe some other organized...thing. And if you think Ferrell is more comedically gifted than Jim Carrey then you're just being ignorant of the past. 'Cowbell' was pure The Walken, not Ferrel. Carrey hasn't done shit in a long time comedy-wise, granted, but his comedy legacy (stand-up act, 'In Living Color' characters, and Pet Detective, all genius material and all him) and talents far outweigh Ferrel, who's inherent comedy ONLY & exclusively stems from rampant self-deprecation or aggrandizement as a comedy twist on what should actually be deprecation. Get it? Ha ha.

...about Reitman...you guys are correct and not in any opinion sense. Reitman's not a writer of great comedies but he does produce (management versus creative input = BIG difference obviously). In fact, he's literally, actually, not a writer at all (did he write Twins? Didn't know that...imdb credits him with production almost exclusively). So Reitman was my bad example. Apologies! But I do indeed think Ramis is a better writer than John Hughes, yes most definitely! While we're speaking of Sherlock Holmes, et al...I was wondering what everybody thought about Levinson's "Young Sherlock Homes"? I liked the movie although there was something that kept it from being great. I also must put in that I always loved Star Trek's TNG generation "Sherlock Holmes" episodes where Picard (Stewart) played Holmes and Daniel Davis expertly playing Moriarty. Good stuff all around! And lastly and unrelated, did anybody notice these "my friend told me i can find blah blah on this website blah blah" fucking spammers intruding into these TB discussions? I see these feces-shelling asshats on political sites all the time and to see them here is...unfortunate.
