the dvd's have been consistently selling since the show ended, so there's definitely a fairly sizable audience at this point. plus i can't imagine the budget being more than $15-20 mil, so they should have no problem turning that around. just not sure that it's necessary after 3 perfect seasons and a 3 year gap.

It wasn't like they cut the ending off, they cut from the middle and went for the big resolution. A few very minor plots got rushed or dropped, but they actually did wrap up the show. I sure hope they had good ideas in mind before bringing it back rather than the idea of brining it back first.

Arrested Development is the greatest show ever to grace television. The nature of the nielsen ratings system makes a show like Arrested Development an easy target for cancellation, but I think with a modest budget an Arrested Development film could make its money back and then some. Hell, they could go the Futurama route with DTV movies and I think they'd still be profitable while putting out a quality product (as long as they have quality material).

I dont see it working on the big screen...part of the shows success was its format-short, sharp and endlessly funny, they had crammed as many brilliant jokes into 22 minutes as possible. The show DID depend on injokes but also because it was so short, the jokes were relentless, and highly repetitive (not in a bad way-although when watching the dvds its noticiable how much they tell you what happened in the previous episode that you JUST SAW over again). We've seen relentless jokes work before (Airplane obviously) but unless they mess around with the formatArrested Development styled relentless jokes might not work well in a film. Remember the Family Guy film they mde when it was at its height (I dont want to get into tha but suffice to say I thinks that show has REAAAALLY lost its way) but the Stewie Griffin story got boring as a film, yet when divided up as three episodes for tv it worked much much better. so in conclusion some tv shows are tv shows for a reason (arm falls off)....and thats why, you always LEAVE A NOTE. Anyway, bring BACK THE SHOOOW! Or maybe they shouldnt...it could always be remebered as a brilliant tv show that never ever dropped in quality, like Wonderfalls or Firefly or Seinfeld.

From what little I saw of it, AD looked quite good... but, it's a cancelled US sitcom that didn't set the world alight. Here in the UK, I'd say a good 95% of people have NO idea what the hell it is. It was only ever shown very late at night on the BBC. Expect it to a die a box-office death here. Was it a big hit in other territories, or are the makers relying on US business only? Hey, it'll break even at least (as I doubt it's gonna be BIG budget stuff, and has a few famous faces)... but an axed TV shows getting a shot at the silver-screen... well, just look at Serenity. Well-regarded by its TV fans, but a big flop.

Comedies never do as well internationally -- too many subtle, not-so-subtle, local flavors -- as they do in the country that makes them. Subtle british humor in England's "The Office" is just as funny as America's "The Office" -- just timed to a different metronome. Big dumb action flicks with things that go boom do better. And karate chops. Ohh, oh!! Don't forget the speeding cars!

Now we can be assured we'll have months and months of snooty "better-than-thou's" going on and on about how uproariously funny "Arrested Development" was, and if you didn't think so, "you just don't get it." I'm sorry but the show was never funny. Not then, not now. I tried for more than a season to join the herd and pump myself up a furious nerd-boner for this D.O.A. comedy, but it just never took. Yes, I got the layered "jokes." Yes, I understood the delayed pay-off references. It. Just. Wasn't. Funny. At. All. Yet the blind devotion to this sad little comedy borders on the religious insanity surrounding "Shawshank" and it's drooling legion of cult followers. Say anything even remotely negative about either and the wolves descend, hungry for vengeance since you dared besmirch their shiny perfect thing. Oh dear, call out the minions, our tastes don't run perfectly in sync.

by danowen
Jul 1st, 2008
05:08:51 PM
Are you serious? I think most US comedies are pretty big hits around the world. Well, the ones that "matter" anyway. I was really just debating the business sense in reviving a TV comedy that was AXED in its native land (because not enough people watched it) and didn't break through overseas either! It seems to me they'll bank on the pulling power of Bateman and Cera post-Juno/Superbad to entice a crowd. And ensure the film only has a $20m budget. They'll make that back, if only through DVD sales.

one of the only shows that got turned into a movie that I enjoyed though was Serenity from Firefly. I'm guessing this is gonna play out like one really long episode. Still, the show was hilarious while it lasted. I will probably go with my girlfriend and some of her friends, and I will probably laugh a good deal.

Impenetrable in terms of needing a degree in nuclear physics to understand its humor. Not even winning 2 comedy series Emmys could save it. It's as if they went out of their way to make it inaccessible to the rank and file viewer.

I like AD as much as the next guy, but if the movie resorts to bringing back every little joke from the series, it's gonna blow. Honestly, the show was best at it's simplest in the first season. I hope they take a fresh direction with the film instead of calling back the jokes I already know they made.

you know, one of those shows that so many seem to love and love dearly...like its almost treated as this awesome perfect show. and so i eventually gave it a go and found it actually quite boring. guess its one of those shows you have to "get" or something, like the Office. either way, thats cool to see that Tambor is in Hellboy 2...he isnt in any of the trailers i saw so i figured they just ditched him or something. i wonder if they'll make any mention of saving him from that end credits sequence.

it's that you barely have time to recover from one joke when the next four hit you in succession. I've been rewatching the episodes maybe four or five times before I feel like I caught all the visual gags, one liners and allusions. (Yep, you have to "use your allusions," so you know, like Edgar Allen Poe, but not that one. I'm using it.)

Arrested Development, I can't see it working as a movie. The best that fans can hope is that the people putting up the money have no input and it is made only for AD fans (which is unlikely); and, that AD works in film format as well as the series format (which is unlikely). And, I sincerely hope I'm proven wrong on both accounts.

I think one of the greatest moments in comedic television is when Gob and Steve Holt embrace. Steve says "I'll never forget this, Dad!"

Steve leaves the room...Gob pops a roofie ("forget me now") and says "I will. I will."

Anyone see that deleted scene where David Cross is just berating Fox to the camera for not marketing the series better.

Seriously...tha t show was no where to be seen WHILE it was winning emmys, gaining critical praise from most circles. Fucking FOX!

First is that the show flopped because people have to watch every second of the show for it to make sense. It's not a show where you can watch a little, take care of the kid, put in a load of laundry, and then watch a little more. AD take a commitment to watch but has a huge payback. A movie setting makes this type of show much more watchable because everyone is entirely tuned in and committed to watching. Sencond is that 1.5 hours of a comedy this fast paced with the jokes may become exhausting about 45 minutes in. Not for me though!
