2001 does indeed look amazing, as does Patton. Both were shot on 70mm... I think that's the key to why those films blow your mind on Blu-Ray, while Spartacus and some other older movies just look "pretty good" on HD, when compared to more recent films. That said, I don't know shit about this stuff...

Old and new movies alike look great in HD
by strosmer
Jun 30th, 2008
07:00:04 PM
The high resolution scans of HD media only succeed in capturing more of the original information of film prints and thus approximate true film more closely, not to mention the contrast is drastically improved, providing more weight to the image. So whether you're watching a silent classic or the newest blockbuster, the image actually looks closer to the image originally intended.

I have a cinephile friend who says watching Casablanca in HD goes against the true film experience, which I fully understand but at the same time pass off as the romantic notion of film watching for the purposes of a more nostalgic experience - something I certainly enjoy myself from time-to-time.

Personally, I think any director would want the finest restoration and image quality possible for the presentation of their film. HD transfers are comparable (though never matched) to the first run of a print through a projector. Many of you know this I’m sure, but for those not so familiar with the technicalities of film projection, film prints deteriorate rapidly due to the high heat of the projector bulbs, ruining the original contrast and color over time.

So though HD media is not quite the same as seeing a first run film print, I think having old movies in HD is simply a great thing, if for nothing more than preservation's sake and the fact we get to see (more closely) the images originally intended by the director. I look forward to seeing more and more as they are released. Mind you, I'm not saying go out and buy a Blu-ray player right now. SD is still great if optimized correctly, and suits older films just fine, especially if the transfer is good. Just saw “Angels with Dirty Faces” last week and thought it looked great in SD. I just know when it comes out in HD, it’ll look even better.

Happy viewing.

Though more specifically, with the set being $119.99 and the individual movies being only $19.99, I might skip GIII and the supplemental stuff and just pick up GI and GII. (Already have the DVD boxed set). Herc' hahaha...

Been hoping for a carefully remastered set of Godfather films on BD, looks like this is being done right (frame-by-frame, assuming HQ CODEC, dual layer, etc.)

I just picked up Goodfellas and even the non-super-director-supervised remastering was outstanding!

have come on TV, I can't help but watch. "I know it was you Fredo. You broke my heart." And more. Coppola's masterpieces. Truly. So what if nothing else he ever did matched them? It doesn't matter. He made those. The third film wasn't bad, it just was not on the same level as the first two. The worst part was his daughter, who couldn't act; now she can't direct or write, either. Lost in Translation was artsy, ponderous, dull crapola. I still cannot comprehend what was so great about it (??). Had I seen it in a theater, I would've walked out halfway and demanded my money back. Too bad you can't do that with a film rental. But getting back to Dad's triology, especially those first two. Since I'm a non-Blu Rayer, at least for the next couple of years at least, I won't chime in on that end.

...on Blu-Ray. Honestly, if studios are trying to sell us on this new format they really should hurry up with the classics, the kind of films that you could easily watch over and over - Godfather is certainly a step in the right direction. Look at what they're releasing: In The Line Of Fire, Anger Management, The Devil's Own, The Bone Collector, So I Married An Axe Murderer, these films are hardly visual treats that'll show off the best of what HD can deliver. They need to get the Star Wars and Lord Of The Rings films out fast. As for older movies, Casablanca looks completely stunning in a scales are lifted from my eyes kinda way. It bodes well for other much older films to get the same treatment. Hopefully we won't have to imagine for long what a King Kong or a Bride Of Frankenstein BR will look like. The Searchers also looked incredible, almost modern in some bits, I mean in the sense that it looked as if recently filmed. Looking forward to seeing Metropolis, if you caught the remastered print at a theatre you'll know just how detailed and crafted that film really is. Godfather should be great, full of deep dark tones, one would hope.

I finally watch all of the Godfather movies about 2 months ago and while they were good, they were not THAT good! Jesus. This is just another example of how something gets started and grows and grows. "Oh man! The Godfather movies are classics! You gotta see 'em man!" Yeah ...right. They were cool for the 70's but now, just another gangster movie. After watching them a little at a time (whats up with these 10 hour movies?) I was like WTF? What was so GREAT about that shit?! Good movies. Not GREAT movies by any stretch of the imagination. At least not by "The Dark Knight" standards set nowadays : )

08:09:47 PM
It is a great question about why some films look great on BluRay and some look average. It still comes down to how the company remasters the movie, and if they do a half-ass job in remastering it, it won't look that much better then standard-DVD. If they go all out and do a full restoration, it will look awesome. A BluRay movie will always look better then a standard DVD movie just because there is more resolution, but if they don't go back and clean up the original print and get all the dust and specs on the negative, it will look dated when the final product is released. It sounds like they went back and restored The Godfather movies frame by frame so it should look pretty damn good. I hope that helps.

Godfather II
by mithrandir16
Jun 30th, 2008
09:06:38 PM
Godfather II is one of the few sequels to surpass the original. Others are Terminator 2, Empire Strikes Back, and Two Towers (in my always humble opinion). It has the balls to show us our protagonist losing his soul. It's also the only movie I know of since DW Griffith's Intolerance to make a point by simultaneously telling parallel stories from different time periods. The alternating young Vito/middle aged Michael stories strengthen each of them, creating something new that is more than the sum of those two narratives. Fucking brilliant! Can't wait for the blu-ray releases. BTW, we would all probably appreciate Godfather III a little more if Coppola had been able to keep his original title of The Death of Michael Corleone.

by Anakin Whoopass

The drop in image quality between Godfather II and III is apparent even on standard-def DVD and maybe more so on Blu-ray. Godfather II was the last 3-strip Technicolor film, a process that's proved to be like a time machine for film restorers: instead of a faded color negative whose original quality can only be estimated, Technicolor gave us three stable black-and-white images that can be combined in the computer to make a perfectly balanced image. Godfather III's color film stock shows age and the older films look like they were shot yesterday, better than they would have originally in fact.

Ang Lee's "The Hulk"? "Iron Man"? You are shitting me, right? Now I have no intention of ragging on "Iron Man," which was by all means completely badass, but it was NOWHERE WITHIN 100 THOUSAND MILES of The Godfather I or II in terms of cinematography, music, storytelling, or pure, unabated, cinematic pathos. You wanna talk overrated classics? Let's talk Bonnie & Clyde. Let's talk Lawrence of Arabia (I know, I'm probably opening myself up for a similar assault on that one), but The Godfather is cinema in its highest form.

... But I have to address this... Someone said that ALL three of the original Star Wars, Spiderman 2, Iron Man and Ang Lee's Hulk movie are all better than any of the Godfather movies. While it is common knowledge that Empire Strikes Back IS one of the greatest movies of all time, I must question your taste and more importantly your credentials for even being here if you feel any of the movies you named are better films than Godfather 1 or 2. It could be said that you have to be sort of a film buff or student to get why the Godfather movies are sooo great. But a person who may have different taste and prefers to watch Spiderman 2 or Iron Man or (for God's sake) Ang Lee's Hulk must recognize the great imfluence the Godfather movies have had. Most people I know recognize that the Godfather movies in fact ARE great movies and MAY BE the standard bearer for truly great film... but that they simply can't sit through them. Why do we get in these types of arguments?? It's like someone blurting out that Casablanca isn't a GREAT film! Or Citizen Kane! Or that Shakespeare was a terrible writer. Or Luciano Pavoratti was a bad singer. When everyone in the film industry, who knows film, loves film, bow to these films like The Godfather, Casablanca, Citizen Kane, The Empire Strikes Back. So get off your high horse! If your truly love movies and films (and there IS a difference) than you will take the time to watch each one of the greats at least to say you saw them and you understand why they ARE so LOVED. Then you can go back to watching Iron Man 10 times a day.

but Iron Man? That's weird. It's not even the best film of the year. I say Star Wars is better because film is about entertainment and what you take out of it, pleasure etc I mean people don't watch movies to learn, you watch to pass the time. And well Star wars is quite possibly the most entertaining and rewatchable movie ever made. Doesn't mean I don't love the godfather because I do, i fucking love it, love part 2 even more, but Star Wars is more entertaining and i always see things in a more simple cosmic sense, which would you rather see more? etc. plus I rather see a movie about good guys and bad guys and hope and heroism and things that aren't real because reality sucks, than a movie about people I would actually want to kill in real life. But yeah I love the godfather.

Old movies only look good on Blu-ray if the restoration is meticulous. I'm assuming Lucas is going to do this with Star Wars. Yeah they were restored for the special editions but what they need to do is give us the frame-by-frame fully restored ORIGINAL THEATRICAL EDITIONS along with new FINAL cuts of each movie (including the prequels) in glorious 1080p.
The Godfather is boring?

I know everyone has an opinion, but I seriously wonder about people who post on the internet sometimes. There were certain things growing up that EVERYONE I knew agreed on: Return of the Jedi was the worst of the 3 Star Wars movies, Superman III & IV sucked donkey dick, Raiders of the Lost Ark is a classic, the Prequels nowhere as good as the Classic Star Wars Trilogy, and Godfather I & II are two of the greatest movies of all-time! There was a debate about whether Godfather II was better then I, but that depended whether you liked DeNiro rather then Brando/Caan, so that was a legit debate, but nobody I knew said the movies suck. Who are you people on the internet, and why haven't I meet anyone in real life who likes the Star Wars Prequels yet thinks the Godfather movies are boring?

You're a different kind of asshole. While the Godfather haters flaunt their stupidity and lack of taste as a merit badge, you make it a point in every talkback to bash less serious pop-cultural films (and their fans) while making unrelated points that reek of poor self-esteem. Godfather haters are tasteless, moronic asshats, while you're an arrogant, insufferably elitist snob.

I watched The Godfather parts 1 and 2 for the first time just a couple of years ago and was completely drawn in like a great novel. I don't think I was bored once and I'm not even a gigantic mobster movie fan (although calling the Godfather movies just "mobster" movies is a pretty big injustice).

And saying that Iron Man is a better movie than either Godfather 1 and 2 is pretty much like saying that The Artic Monkeys is a better band than the Beatles.

The Godfather isn't that old, and yet it merits a frame-by-frame restoration? Is that just a marketing ploy or didn't Paramount keep the masters in airtight vault or what? I'd seriously like to know. Last night TV showed an old (first series) ep of "Sex and the City" and it looked horrible, all grainy and faded. I've seen that often with other shows too, when they go into syndication, and I know that those shows looked fine when first aired.. anyone know what happens? I'd love to hear it! Aren't pristine digital backups made of all recent series as a matter of course?

Films 1 and 2 are one classic scene after another. The shots are often like paintings. The story would feel natural in Shakespeare or opera. The actors bring their A game.

Maybe if you go into this film with the idea that it's "The best film of all time," you might be a bit disappointed, especially if you don't (or aren't creative enough to) see the themes and characters as they relate to your life. However, I think that even if you can't relate to the story or don't like where it goes, an objective viewer will admit that this is one of the best-made films they've seen, and that they can at least understand the near-universal love that this film gets. To dismiss that entirely seems like hipster overcompensation or internet tough-guy talk.

I am damn near speechless over this. Do you motards actually, really and truly hate the Godfather? Think it is overrated? The greatest two movies of all fucking time? I mean, I understand that movie opinions are subjective, so having a dissenting opinion is fine. But when that opinion becomes sheer lunacy, such as suggesting that Iron Man, and LOTR and Star Wars can even sniff the Godfathers balls, let alone be considered better, when you make statements like that, you have removed yourself from being worthy of having an opinion at all. I truly beleive, some are just trying to stir the pot and be contrary. Fine, you are allowed to be assholes. But to those of you who truly beleive such a thing, I can only hope that the visiting nurse brings a forklift with her this time to turn you over so that the exploding bedsores will stop rotting what is left of your brain stem.

To say that you don't think Godfather I & II are great films is one thing (I totally disagree, but okay that's your opinion), but to say that they are bad, boring, etc? Now THAT'S JUST OUTRAGEOUS NONSENSE!!! By what objective could these films be deemed bad? The writing, acting and direction are all superb, and I don't believe there is anyone out there who can seriously contest that fact. You don't have to like these films to realize their greatness (although how you can call yourself a movie fan and still not appreciate these films is beyond my comprehension).

There is something beautiful about the imperfections of film that makes it feel more organic. I like the picture quality of blu-ray, but sometimes that hyper-perfection comes off as sterile. Dirty vs Clean Film Quality
by Mullah Omar
Jul 1st, 2008

I saw a new print of GODFATHER 1 and 2 on the bigscreen a few years ago and it looked outstanding. I had seen both films several times, but seeing it in the theater with a fresh print was a great experience and brought the film to even greater life.

Yes, the dirty film quality you see on TV is pretty cool, but the clean version brings out the color and truly makes a lot of quieter scenes look like paintings. It also felt like it better drew the audience into the period scenes of Cuba and Italy rather than reminded you that you were watching a film. In short, with a restored print, the action scenes were more immersive and the quiet scenes were more beautiful.

If you can see either GODFATHER film in this way, I would recommend doing so. Aside from that, I expect a Blu-Ray presentation will be the next best thing.

How am I an idiot because I think that the Godfather movies are good but not GREAT?! WTF? LOL! I would never waste the time to watch any of the lame Bad Boy flicks. Now the Sean Penn Bad Boys movie was GREAT! Everytime I see "Bad Boys" listed I always think "COOL!" thinking it MAY be the Sean Penn movie only to then go "FUCK!" because it's that stupid Martin Lawrence shit. Sean Penns "Bad Boys" is a great flick. FAR better than the WAAAAAAAY over rated Godfather films or that Martin Lawrence doo-doo. IN MY OPINION! And besides, I DID say that the GF films were GOOD. Does everyone have to agree with you that the GF movies are GREAT or else that makes them an idiot? You, BadMrWonka, need to chill out. And by the looks of this talkback, about 50% of the folks seem to agree with me so... It's called OPINIONS! You sure are uptight. Now, bring on THE DARK KNIGHT!

I was in Best Buy yesterday and the average price for BR discs is $30. Sure, you can rent them though Netflix, but I haven't paid $30 for a DVD in 10 years. The studios will have to work on slashing the retail price by 50% if they want to get people like me on board. I drive a frickin Prius and even I can't afford to fill up the car without giving up superfluous items. Watching Sonny get filled up with hot lead in HD is always going to take a backseat to putting gas int he car so I can get to work.

I hate how all the haters of Blu Ray act like you must pay $30 for a Blu Ray. There's other outlets like Amazon, eBay, Half, and 2 for $30 from Best Buy. You're an asshole (or rich) if you pay $30 for a title that is $19.95 on one of the sites I mentioned above. I also use Netflix. That means the haters can use those sites as well.
Difference in upscaled SD vs. BR/HD
by strosmer
Jul 1st, 2008
01:31:01 PM
Not that substantial if you ask me, especially if the SD is a remastered transfer. I watched Alien (remastered SD) and Bladerunner (HD) back-to-back and couldn't distinguish much in terms of detail. I watch on a video projector and can pick out a lot of detail. Granted, a true test would be to watch the same movie in both formats, but regardless I felt Alien looked nearly as sharp as Bladerunner. In fact, I couldn't really say I saw a difference in picture quality there. I guess I should say here that my projector is only capable of doing 720p, not 1080p. That may make a further difference, but how much? When I watched Batman Begins on HD, the one substantial quality difference I did notice over the SD version (watched maybe a couple months prior) was contrast, which succeeded in adding some weight to the picture. On a smaller screen, I doubt that’s much of an issue. But in terms of enjoying BR over upscaled SD, I'm not groaning about SD at all, and certainly not looking to rebuy my entire collection. BR is a better quality and I'm happy with it, but I agree with DGDB that there's no need to suffer the anxiety of not owning a BR player right away, if ever.

Yes, I have already posted about those points, and it is sad. Opinions are subjecive, and I certainly do not have a problem with anyone saying that GF is not the greatest movie of all time, or their favorite. But, when someone says that Sean Penns Bad Boy's is better than the Godfather, well that is just plain motarded. I think a proper perspective is needed and some of the kids or immature adults in here, need to learn what perspective truly means. We can beat up on them - rhetorically, all day long, but in the end, it will be their own experience, or lack therof, that will decide whether or not they will ever gain a true understanding of what sublime filmaking really means.

OK, like I said, I realize you can rent Blu-Ray discs but there are unfortunately a lot of movies I like to own and even at Amazon the typical new release will run you $23.95 a pop. And I should have been more forthcoming. Since I have two home theaters, my budget only allowed for a pair of $70 upconversion DVD players.

On the 60" HDTV (1080p) downstairs, the picture is pretty good but I can see how a Blu-Ray player would be better. Upstairs on the 1080p HD projector however (using an 8'x6' screen), the picture looks outstanding. Would BR make a difference? I'm sure. But the crispness of that image blows me away every single time I watch a movie up there.

When BR players are $150 and discs are $15, we'll talk. Until then, the setups I have give me a geekgasm 8 times out of 10.

I guess the argument should be specified as an attitudinal one, not a technical one. Technically, BR/HD owns SD. I'll bow to you there. But as I was watching Alien I thought, "This looks fantastic, what more could I see in the picture that would make me enjoy it more?" I'd have to say, nothing substantial. The screen I have is 100" 4:3 aspect ratio (about 84" x 80"). Certainly I can tell the difference, and I do enjoy that for myself, I just don't see the difference as anything to get in a pinch about. Again, I'm only projecting at 720p vs. 1080p. Perhaps the difference between 1080p and upscaled SD is substantial. As significant as VHS to DVD? Not for me, not by a long shot. VHS to DVD was substantial. SD to HD, about half as much. Welcome to the digital age.

For now, I watch most movies in SD and they really look great. If I get to watch a BR or HD DVD version, it's icing on the cake, a super tasty frosting with bold colors and a rich texture, but the cake itself is still pretty darn good.

If your budget doesn't allow you to have a Blu Ray..FINE. But if you can afford Blu Ray (and there's cheap ways of getting one) but say it's not worth it, that's another thing. For example I bought my PS3 without a hard drive on eBay for under $200. Added the hard drive myself for under $50. Then got an out of the box projector (with only 10 minutes use on the bulb) for $500 under the retail of a new one. And then got a $600 screen on eBay for a little over $200. I didn't buy this stuff in one big binge. I seperated the purchases over 3 months and used my tax refund for part of it. I'm not trying to brag. I'm just giving an example how a little patience and persistance can save a HUGE amount of money and still get me or anyone else really good stuff.

I'm guessing BR players will be $150 by this time next year and at that point I will probably use the fifth stimulus check we receive and do my part to kickstart the economy. I blew all my goodwill with the wife when I bought a $2,000 projector without telling her so she won't let up on the purse strings for more electronics this year.

I've been cobbling both of my theaters together for the past 5 years starting with the audio setups and I've spent more on each than I care to admit.

I'm sure you will do much better then I did. When is the CNN thing on and what's it about, bowling?

no, bowling would be cool though. it's for a short film I did and some writing. here's the short, if you're interested:

I think I'm gonna be on the 12th, but there'll be a thing on their website about it for a while, which is cool. I'm setting up a new website and everything, it's pretty cool.

and now, back to editing!

I disagree.

I guess I've missed the boat now, but grain and dirt

are NOT the same fucking thing.

I know it muddies the waters when they talk about 'clean up' both for getting rid of dust and scratches AND reducing grain with fucking DNR but grain is NOT dirt and as it's an integral part of both the structure of the film AND the picture information, you can't 'lift' it as if it's a layer on top of the 'true' film. And as for 'sticking with sd', it essentially does a similar thing just by virtue of the low rez mushing the detail and obscuring the grain. If the grain's there in the first place, it should be there at the end, and if it means we have to put up with a few scratches and dirt the inital wash couldn't fix because there isn't the budget for a Robert a Harris restoration, then so be it. At least it's better than losing all the high-frequency detail.

I know DannyGlover's and those guys are gone now but it makes me crazy (at least Ultron (except for the 300 thing) & Tacom get it) and I had to get it off my chest. Thanks guys.

Oh and Patton looks fucking HORRIBLE. DNRd to DEATH with waxy/plastic looking characters and no high frequency detail, which is ludicrous for what was a 70mm film that shouldn't have required much "clean-up" (grrrr) anyway. There are stories that they switched from some lot in India that did their good stuff to a new lot in China who obviously aren't on the money, so to speak. There are also stories about the DNR being 'news' to the suits, and that it may already get a proper re-jig (I'm guessing they'd do a free exchange like the new Fifth Element). But that's just rumour for now. I'm boycotting it, Failure at the Cave, it almost looks cel-shaded. Bah.

Another classic ruined for me

End of Story. one is more entertaining than the other. and you don't need to say Godfather is better to sound like an elitist snob, don't worry i used to do it too, when you name movies and music just to sound smart. but boil it down to a cosmic sense, which one is more enjoyable, because that is film, and that film is star wars. Not to say Godfather is bad because it's one of my favourite movies ever. Star Wars is just better, because it's more entertaining.

The more I think about it, the more I realize that The Godfather is just average. If it were released today, nobody would even give it much mention really. Nothing special. Good movie. Not great LAWLZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
