It's purely a taste thing, but I like Tim Burton's gothic fairytale approach, I love the visual aesthetic of the film, the score is wonderful, and it's a mainstream summer film about freaks, weirdos and misfits, which just appeals to me.

I'm still curious about this new Batman film, however. Nolan's take on the comic book genre is not totally my cup of tea, but he can be relied relied on to deliver some above average stuff. Nothing yet that quite lives up to the promise of Memento, but I suppose you can't expect the man to be that good every time.

Pacing was off, felt slow and un-plotted, the (SPOILER, but not really since you find out about 5 minutes in) whole Liz pregancy subplot and her fighting with Hellboy has absolutely no poignancy whatsoever either.

Really felt all style no substance. It did aim high, but missed the mark.

Hope the Hobbit brings out more of Pans Guillermo than Hellboy Guillermo or else we're in trouble.

I kind of liked when Batman took out the thugs on the wharf. It conveyed a sense of Batman being an unstoppable physical force. I was content to let my imagination fill in the punches and kicks for me.

Folks complaining about that always struck me as being the same people who would say Alien sucks because "you can hardly see the monster cuz it's like all dark n stuff."

2)JPT - I feel like a ****heel for not warning you about Dragon Tiger Gate. That movie is just a mess. Donnie does the best he can but they gave him nothing to work with. Dragon Dynasty has added Invisible Target to their collection so put that in your queue as well and maybe you'll have it for the long weekend.

I was sitting on the fence with Smokin' Aces until the elevator scene where the three skinheads charged out with chainsaws and killed the MULTITUDE of guys with guns. In the past 24 hours I've seen things I didn't think imaginable, namely movie geeks saying the Godfather is a bad movie and Bad Boys 2 is the greatest action movie of all time. I'll let you know when my head stops spinning.

As for Krull, not only did I watch it a few weeks ago, but I listened to all four commentaries and watched all the behind the scenes stuff. The stes that they built were truly impressive. I think people forget what a grand scale the filmmakers envisioned with that project. Cheese aside, it's still a greta movie that holds up well.

I haven't seen Papillion in years but I remembered it being a classic.

There is an animated kung-fu movie that got played once and I have been trying to find out what it was for years. Unless someone knows exactly what I'm talking about, I have no idea how to determine the title of this flick.

All I remember is that there were good guys and bad guys - all different types of creatures and humans. The one guy I remember most vividly was a sort of griffin-type character who used a staff. I think he ended up getting killed in a vat of hot oil or something.

It was a crazy, wicked animated kung-fu movie and I only ever saw it once. Does that ring a bell with anyone.

My brother is like that. Sent him to the video store once to rent the Fraser Mummy when it first came out and he came back, purposefully, with Tale of the Mummy by Russel Mulcahy. My bet is that we had more fun with that one than the movie he was supposed to get. I definitely think there is more legitimate entertainment value in The Mummy, but the case can be made for Tale too, as it has the mummy's bandages doing the dirty work, and only slowly becoming the actual mummy. It was inept, but we felt refreshed and it was a cool connective moment for our family at a time when things were kind of tense. Now there are plenty of other things that do that well and better, but for a puny B movie to do that, I find that cool.

Watched The Bank Job last night. Talk about piss poor editing.

I really should have been renting Definitely, Maybe as suggested by Mr Pillow Talk, but I chickened out. I just couldn't do it. Instead, I went for a double bill of two films that sounded similar - Rambo and Juno - but which turned out to be quite different. One was about a deeply violent old man, while the other was about a deeply irritating young woman.

What else is good? I've been through all the telly DVDs I wanted to watch at the local Blockbuster, so I'm back on a film watching kick again. All suggestions are greatfully received.
