I thought it was gripping edge of the seat stuff with a squeaky bum finish. I was in tears when Sarah Jane Smith hugged her son in tears. Congratulations to Russell T Davis , who Who fans should get down on their knees for (pun intended) and thank for bringing back a British institution. OK so not every episode has been perfect but what is? For my money (as a license payer) I think its been brilliant. I can't wait for next weeks episode. I cant believe such a great surprise has been kept out of the press (which does make me wonder...). If I ever meet RTD I for one will gladly shake his hand and buy him a pint - and that goes for the cast and team who have worked bloody hard to produce such a great episode and series.

To all the people out there that said RTD couldnt write Who...cmon what do you say after that. utterly fantastic episode! the Daleks and Davros just oozed menace. The best they have ever been in new Who. Utterly creepy and genuinely scary - we have had the Earth in peril several times but this time felt genuinely threatening. And then - SPOILER - the Doctor starts to regenerate in what has surely been the best kept secret in TV! Can this really be happening?? I love Tennant as the 10th Doctor, he has been fantastic! Furthermore - I thought the whole reason for having no full series next year was to allow Tennant to do other things thus keeping him in Who! Has this all been a huge red herring?? What a cliffhanger! Is this the end for Tennant? Who will be the new Doctor?? Next Saturday can't come fast enough.

RTD I take most of it back. You may be the greatest showman of all time. The Stolen earth (not sky notice you dumb ape) was a steaming pile of nonsense, that was as big a cliched piece of crap as any hack has concocted since the mid 60s heyday of Adam Wests Batman. It was also bloody marvelous and has left me spinning like i've just had my seventh scotch. I will admit that there is nothing that will stop me tuning in next week short of death or sex with nigella lawson.(and she'd better throw in a pie also otherwise it's still touch and go) there is lots to criticize if you think about this but thats not the point. It's how i feel and and all i realise is a week is too long to wait. Adios Mr RTD. You are a bloody genius.

Okay, I have been defending Doctor Who against RTD haters and Taters for four years... but this was borderline dreadful. It was like the very last episode of The X-Files. Every character who has appeared in the series is brought back, has their two lines of dialogue, then is shuffled off set again. It was so rushed, with no development at all. Nobody was on screen long enough to act, or even react (Doctor/Rose especially). Large sections seemed copied and pasted from previous episodes: Dalek ships flying through space (season 1 finale), Daleks flying around everywhere (season 2 finale), that black American newswoman (every RTD episode), the general saying "Ladies and gentlemen, we are at war" (season 3 finale, or was it the Sontaran episode a few weeks back? Or both?). The idea of all these worlds being moved across space was great. The Shadow Proclamation was also classy. After that things fell apart. It was all so superficial, everything just thrown at the screen without anything behind it. Davros didn't so much as arrive on screen, as the camera just noticed he was on set. This was not a great return. There was no real explanation of who he is, apart from some throwaway line where he says "I am the Lord and Creator of the Daleks". Where was the Davros from Genesis of the Daleks who has philosophical debates with the Doctor? This was the one dimensional cackling baddie from the Sylvester McCoy years. And then that ending, and we all know Tennant is back for the specials... which suggests RTD is going to reuse the unforgivable Star Trek: Voyager-style ending he used last year, with everything just being undone by a magic deus ex machina plot device. Such as Donna sacrificing herself to rewind time and put everything back. I have absolutely zero expectations for next week, but then, these finale two-parters do tend to pick up in their second halves, so maybe...
Shocked how abysmal the script was.

The dialogue especially. And I loved Midnight. Felt really thrown together, like fan fiction. Too much exposition and moving ancillary characters around like a child playing with action figures. Worst episode since Daleks In Manhattan in terms of cringeworthy clumsiness of construction? And the special effects were shit. But it did have a few strong ideas that I hope it won't squander next week.

It was a catastrophic, illogical, outrageous mess. I just hope next week RTD doesn't drop the ball yet again. I thought I'd lost hope, but Midnight has given me cause to bite my knuckles and pray one more time. Sadly it does all seem like there's going to be a big cop out regarding the 'incident'.

You asked what do people want - what I wanted was LESS, rather than more. I wanted the Doctor and Davros to face off, have some sort of interaction. I didn't want them to webcam. That's how Remembrance of the Daleks ended. And I didn't want the Doctor's reaction to Davros simply to be a few tears. He didn't even say anything, and was back to running around, coat flapping, as chipper as ever in the next scene. If they'd stripped the script of the superfluous characters (the Torchwood people, maybe even Sarah Jane) then they could have focused on the true disastrous scale of Davros having survived the Time War. Instead, you get no sense of that, just a load of CGI, which is like a nudge to say "Hey, the Daleks are BAD, get it?" I didn't FEEL it.

I seem to remember Billie being really kinda hot in the series, and I wanted them to get her back into the show to re-unite her with the Doctor. But somehow, when she re-appeared in this episode, I was totally distracted by her weird changed teeth. It was as though she was wearing prosthetic teeth, like, it was so obvious I actually wondered at one point if it was a deliberate make-up trick to make you wonder if this was the 'real' Rose Tyler or some alien imposter. I'm not kidding. She didn't even speak the same. It was really distracting. The teeth! I mean, come on, did anyone else notice THE TEETH? Fuck Davros, it was all about those weird TEETH. It just felt like a precession of being told this is happening and now this is happening and now this. But for no particular reason. And really really quickly. My guess is this one hit the spot for the kids and the fans of the franchise, but it will have left those who were drawn into the new era by stand alone story telling episodes rather cold. This is the sort of thing that got the old series cancelled. It's not going to win any converts to the mythology, although again I stress there were some very strong ideas in evidence, they were just astonishingly badly executed. Hopefully the pieces will fit together into something more substantial next time. This just felt like pure set up for however they're going to address the cliff hanger - which was shocking, but just came too far out of left field to actually mean anything. Why has Rose come back? Why was the Doctor separated for the run time of the episode? The final scene doesn't work because the only answer to these sorts of question is just because that's what they needed to do in order to tread water until it's time for the cliff hanger. This was straight out of the Lost play book of how to fill time for no reason, without the production values. The amount of pointless techno drivel was mind numbing. I liked the Shadow Proclamation, Caan and Davros and the Red Dalek, the Doctor and Donna, the idea of the planets having been moved. But how much screen time did any of that get? And how did any of it feed into the cliff hanger? In, you know, a story? Just one plot contrivance after another. It's just shoddy writing.

I'm getting a bit bored of the Daleks now. They've been overused and are not a threat anymore. The best parts of this episode were the 2 reactions by Sarah Jane, firstly to the Daleks and then to Davros. Makes sense considering she met both when they were still scary.

All the hints have been dropping like large clangy hinty things: Donna Noble is going to sacrifice her life to save the entire universe. They've been hinting all along that this supposedly 'ordinary' british woman is going to turn out to be the most important human of all time etc. So it's clear to see that, somehow, the beetle thing is still there on her back and has used her to cross some sort of alternate universe into 'our' universe to make everything turn a dark shade of shit sandwich. So this is what we've seen unfolding in this episode; A sort of 'end of everything'. But it's not real, it's dependent on Donna being alive for the beetle to work its Universe-bending magic. So basically she is going to sacrifice herself, David Tennant continues to get a salary for another year, Billie Piper's character doesn't really get to re-unite with The Doctor, as she is sent back to her purgatory in another dimension. Donna dies, Davros is cast away into space, angrily promising to return in 2011 when Jennifer Saunders plays the Doctor. And at the end of the 2011 season, the Doctor's final season nemesis will be Billie Piper's new distracting teeth, which will munch their way through some enormous space jelly babies.

His chest also looks a lot like the genetically engineered vamps of *Blade 2*, and I'm happy they ripped off the Dr. Smith reveal from the theatrical *Lost in Space* since that film ripped off one of the unproduced theatrical scripts to a proposed *Doctor Who* film which reimagined the Daleks as spider creatures.
RTD is in charge of all the 2009 specials

These's some confusion over how many there are (is it three specials in 2009 AND the 2008 Christmas episode, or four specials in 2009 plus Christmas 2008?) - Moffatt officially takes over for the 2010 run. That bing said, I'd fully expect an end of season cliffhanger next week that needs to be resolved in the 09 specials, with Moff having a clean slate (or at least a slate with only the bits of WHO on it he wants) for his first season.

Threefold man? CONTAINS POSSIBLE SPOILERS
by supertoyslast
Jun 28th, 2008
05:31:43 PM
Damn, but the "Threefold Man" sounds as if there will be 3 versions of the Doctor running about. I've already heard the rumour about the botched regeneration leading to two versions of Tennant's Doctor - but which would the third be? I'd love it to be McCoy since, growing up, he was *my* Doctor. But I can't believe that could possibly have been kept secret.

I live in dread that next week's 65 minute episode will be a let-down full of cop-out solutions and a drawn-out pace caused by a hastily-scheduled extra week of filming. Especially after this week was brilliant precisely because it was unrelenting.

2009 specials/Tennant
by supertoyslast
Jun 28th, 2008
05:38:54 PM
There is indeed confusion over precisely how many specials are in 2009. A previous press release referred to a 2008 Christmas special, "3 specials in 2009 starring David Tennant" and the next full series in 2010. A more recent press release referred to 4 specials in 2009.

My hypothesis is that both press releases are, technically, correct. That is, "4 specials" includes the 2009 Christmas special. But Tennant will only be in the first 3 specials.

McGann better be in a multi-Doc story...
by lynxpro
Jun 28th, 2008

If a botched regeneration brings back any former Doctors, it better be Paul McGann's 8th Doctor. He was criminally short-changed first when Fox didn't take the 1996 tv movie to full series and then again in 2005 when RTD cast commitphobe Christopher Eccleston into the role instead of McGann. McGann's 8th Doctor fought the Time War, so it should be his Doctor that returns. It certainly should not be McCoy's since his era is what caused the original series to get canceled, plus the 1996 tv movie production team was generous enough to have him reappear at the beginning of that. Bring in McGann.

All through this season we've been shown repeated close-ups of the Doctor's hand in the jar. Is there a reason behind this?

When the Doc regenerated into Tennant he lost his hand soon after, but he had enough residual energy to grow a new one. Now what if, and I know this sounds mental, but what if the Doctor regenerates into someone completely new at the start of next week but some of that residual energy leaks across to the jar and 'grows' another David Tennant Doctor from his hand.

No, here's the real spoiler:

I have to say that I and a total RTD basher and have lambasted his episodes repeately, well maily because they're awful.

Outstanding! Knock out job! Plot as normal makes no sense but to combine so many different cast and feel like they have all had a crack of the whip and to throw old Harriet in there as well. Perfect set up yes we've had Daleks invading before yes the Doctor giving up made no sense. yes the big circles in space reminded me of Space Pirates

But OMG What is going on with the ending??
Have we all been lied to?? Is David Tennant a poker face liar of amazing proportions or are we going to witness and pretty lame reset button by way of the indigo device and Captain Jack's time watch thingy??

Donna's ring? eh? what if the hand that picked up the Master's ring at the end of last season was hers. think about it. she's as human as anyone but suddenly she's connected to the Doctor, he keeps running into her. She's surrounded by "something" a time energy that warps worlds around her. There's possibly *still* something on her back and now the heartbeat, the sound of drums or the sound of two hearts beginning to beat in her chest? There was a rumour flying that John Simm would indeed return as the Master, what if he comes back through donna?

They spent so much time farting around this week. First, let's bring all these extraneous characters in, so the big villain really does get relegated to the shadows. Second, let's start chucking mystery stuff in like the Osterhagen Key (didn't Rutger Hauer have one of those one weekend) and the Indigo Backpack (which would defo get you strange looks on London Underground). That wasn't drama, it was all fan-dance, in both senses of the phrase, and there's been far too much of that throughout this season. It's like Davies has been trying to out-Lost Lost in the cocktease stakes.

What an amazing episode...

A couple of theories. I reckon the Master is the real big bad behind Davros and the Daleks! The Doctor mentions that somebody has moved Earth before, a long time ago. he could be referring to the Daleks in the Dalek Invasion of Earth...or he could mean the Time Lords in Trial of a Timelord!

Harriet Jones seems to be very good at finding all the Doctor's companions and getting them to summon him don't you think? How did that happen? Oh sure, it's alien tech invented by the Mr Copper foundation, but how is it that she is able to develop it exactly? And wasn't that a familiar sound of drums playing as she hijacked the Dalek's signal? And then we didn't see her actually getb shot did we? And hey! Who's hand was that picking up the Master's ring in the 'ming the merciless' scene from the end of last year's finale?

Curiouser and curiouser!

Yeah, yeah, I know all about The Doctor's "intrinsic" inability to bond with *anyone,* but I defy anyone but the most self-righteous and/or hard-hearted fan not to be moved by the ensuing scene. RTD and crew have outdone themselves, and so far (unlike Whedon, Carter, Thomas and so many other stupid American showrunners) he hasn't disappointed me yet. I doubt he will, and I doubt Moffat will. I think it would be awesome if RTD and the Beeb fooled us all, by having a regeneration now. And seeding the papers with talk of contracts and a few flashes of DT in the xmas episode. Now we have seen shots of a wagon/trailer with the words "The Other Doctor" on it, could that be DT?

I hope so, that would be very well done. I know I was gob-smacked when it happened.

Of course in the confidential DT did say he had was on set with Davros, which he wasn't in tonight's episode, so I suspect it's a false regen.

So who's he gonna be? Dammit, they shocked me with this one, but if they were gonna do it, this was the most emotionally perfect moment to do it. Kudos to RTD for a well-played hand. Kudos to David for not giving it away at any point, and lying so damn well.

This explains the previous mention of it in the pompei ep, plus how Dalek Khan and Rose can both teleport where they should be able to -as this is effectivly a pocket universe?!? The episode last week was it being brought to the viewers attention so it won't come totally out of leftfield next week. Also- yeah I'm on board with there being two Tennet docs - the regen energy somehow is transferred to the hand (which is kind of in statis from the first regeneration period right?)which causes the exact oppostion to happen from the scene in the christmas invasion: aka the hand regrows a new body. A complete stretch on my part that but it kind of explains it. I really liked this episode and it's a good payoff. The spinoff crossover seemed a little forced but it works out of sheer nostalgia for narrative cohersion. Would have been nice to see K9 again though. Finally, I'm glad Harriet Jones didn't end up being the red dalek as rumoured.

And once again, 7 days seems incredibly long... I must say, that's one of the best old timey cliff hangers i think i have ever seen. If the doctor does that thing that he seems to be doing this point it will be a disinformation coup of governmental proportions...

Since RTD is Throwing in the kitchen sink with this story, what hasn't happened? who haven't we seen? what's left in the cupboards? 1. The Timelords. If the time war is truly time locked, but dalek khan could get in.. (and become BSG's hybrid in the process) can the time lords get out? 2. K9. Sarah jane is in trouble.. could the disco robot dog show up to save her? just in the nick of time? 3. Mickey? Rose works for torchwood you say? Mickey fought cybermen, and it's the end of the word, and where is he? i bet he's on the way..with his own BFG 4. which incarnations of the doctor were in the time war? what is this THREEFOLD man that the hybrid (sorry, there i go again...) DALEK KHAN is going on about? we have seen Davison already in the last year- could there be another time crash? 5. The Master... seems a bit, well, of a weird one.. 6. The shadow proclamation, they are all ready to go to war, and then,NOTHING..hmmm...7.River Song is a Timelord is Donna Noble (my wildest speculation but i am sticking with it till next week embarasses me!) 8. Bad Wolf. There needs to be some kind of resolution to that story since they just opened that box again. As you can see, i actually have NO IDEA WHAT WILL HAPPEN AND THUS DECLARE THIS GREATEST CLIFFHANGER OF ALL TIME. (it's going to be a bloody reset button isn't it.)

Great episode. There were a couple of flaws-- the CGI is still a bit cartoony, though I'm willing to overlook it considering the budget and the fact that Who gets part of its charm from looking a bit goofy. I also agree with the reviewer who complained about the talk show clip thrown in for no reason. There's no way anything would be on except the news (I can give Dawkins a pass as he was obviously serving as a pundit) or whatever the Brit version of the EBS is. (And why is Ianto standing there braying like a donkey while watching? He's more intelligent than that.) All this aside it was damn fun. After last season's unfortunate misstep the Daleks are back on form. Rose getting cut out of the companion conversation and obviously being frustrated, and especially her reaction to seeing Martha, was handled very well. The comedy lines-- "Wanna swap?" "YES WE KNOW WHO YOU ARE"-- were slick. And the ending...oh lawd. I almost wish I hadn't already read some of the spoilers for next week, I might've enjoyed still being in shock. Either way I need a TARDIS to skip ahead seven days now.

Until then, random thoughts:

I always talk about how hot Naoko Mori was on Torchwood but damn, Eve Myles tonight...sweet Jesus. I think I'm finally willing to set aside the gap in her front teeth and focus on the two large Welsh rabbits she's hiding under her shirt. British people, I demand to know: Has she been naked in anything?

Speaking of teeth, I must need to go back and watch some older Rose episodes because I really don't see why people are making such a fuss about Billie Piper. I do think her face is a little gaunt but otherwise she's still perfectly fine. When she smiled at the Doctor near the end it was such a fantastic moment.

Somewhere in this talkback I again saw mention of Jennifer Saunders playing the Doctor in one of the specials. WTF? They can't actually be planning that can they? The first time I read it was last week, I thought it was just a riff since Joanna Lumley played the Master in that Children In Need sketch. Come to think of it, Saffy was in that too, wasn't she? Are they going for the trifecta?

Where's Jenny? Big finale blowout and you're not going to have the Doctor's daughter come sweeping in? Maybe next week.

What was that bit about the Time War being in a time lock? And Martha has an odd key? Nah... Did I mention Eve Myles's breasts already?

Finally, to the people who write in every Saturday: Some of you, and I pray you know who you are, need to realize that a "review" is not the same as a "report." You can "review" an episode of Doctor Who *without*, and I'll repeat that, *WITHOUT* listing in order, in detail, every single thing you just saw on the screen. If this keeps up one day people are going to start emailing Herc outright transcripts.

Cliffhanger: fear of the writer
by Dreamfasting

I found the cliffhanger made me more afraid of where the writer was going than where the plot was going. A scenario has been set up which feels like either a deux ex machina reset button is going to have to be hit or the series will be catastrophically mutilated and I'm scared that I don't know which it is. I do have to say that I really like that even in the midst of a frantic, chaotic mesh of characters and wacky foreshadowing, Davros managed to maintain that sense of calm, cold menace as he tutored his children or his brief weight-of-history conversation with the Doctor. And I have to admit I enjoyed the hokey little Richard Dawkins cameo - although deep down I would have preferred to have seen his wife :)
Not the Master's ring...

I've been frame advancing through both the Series 3 finale and the new episode, and Donna's ring is not the same as what the Master wore. The Master's ring was gold with a ring of planets inlaid in a round jade (?) face. Donna's ring is large and square, with an odd face that comes to a flat, pyramid-like point. Her ring looks like it might have flip open to expose a small inner compartment. Perhaps her ring serves the same purpose as the fob watches used by the Doctor and the Master, and she was hearing the beating of drums.

That whole scene on the stairs was rather odd - the odd heartbeat, the mention of something on her back, the water, the foreshadowing of loss. I don't want to hazard a guess though because of the history of misdirection in finales.
Pretty weak episode... CERTAINLY not great.
by TheGhostWhoLurks
Jun 29th, 2008
03:02:55 AM
Bad, cheesy late 80s/early 90s SFX, corny dialouge, weak acting and pretty much everything tossed in there (The Daleks, Davros, UNIT, the self-absorbed and annoying Harriet Jones, every companion the 10th Doctor's had, the end of the world/universe, Rose/The Doctor's reunion, his regeneration)for... what?

Maybe it's simply a case of being the middle of a trilogy episode with no real beginning or end, but this episode really was weak.

Despite the raving reviews here, there was no real shock or drama. NO ONE believes that The Doctor's really regenerating, since Tennant's coming back and Davros is really no more dramatic than he was in the past. Even when he opens his shirt to show that he'd flayed himself to the bone to make new Daleks, my only thought was "Yeah... so? His FACE is 100 times more gross, and I've been seeing that since I was a kid in the 70s!"

I simply didn't care about any of these characters, even though I SHOULD and have in the past. It's simply the result of bad writing and pacing on RTD's part, coupled with bad SFX and surprisingly bad acting from people who should know better.

I'm certainly not on the edge of my seat for next week's episode, and that's a shame. RTD brought back Dr. Who from oblivion and deserves credit for that. However, his swan song story only confirms in my mind that half of the time, he really doesn't know where he wants to go with his ideas and if he does, isn't able to convey them in a satisfying manner to the viewing audience.

I honestly can't say I'll miss his presence in future seasons. :(

Apart from the end of the review, maybe, where they say "that was awesome.." or "that sucked". It was fast paced, epic, solid entertainment! Sure it had the same problems that most of RTD's scripts have (plot holes, exposition over explanation, cartoon action/acting, feeble attempts at comedy, etc) and the usual, unnecessary, "celebrity" cameo... but what the heck - it was f'n brilliant and a lot of fun - and when there are so many treats on screen, the scales can only tip in one direction!

It was great to have all the spinovers cross over and I get a real sense that RTD is getting everyone together for one big farewell party (both on- and off-screen). I also spotted Mickey at the table reading on DWC and unless I'm very much mistaken (and I hope I am!) Jackie Tyler was sitting on his right.

Sure it wasn't perfect, but it was as close to it as RTD is ever going to get and while I would have also loved some more philosophical and enquisitive exchanges between Davros and Tennant, I enjoyed it all nonetheless.

So here are my thoughts and predictions in brief (and in no particular order):

Davros. He looked as every bit as horrific as I remember - but better! A standout job by both the performer and the FX crew! What a shame he only features in 2 episodes - although I'm hoping he features heavily during the specials and that the specials focus on the Time War. I agree his reveal was mishandled: very little build up, very little tension - he just rolled out of the shadows and I watched him do it, whereas I would've prefered to have shat my pants when he made his grand entrance. Oh well, at least the FX crew know their game even if the director/editor/orchestra got it wrong.

Rose. Why?

Billie Piper's teeth. Anyone shocked by Billie Pipers teeth/lisp/inability to speak clearly a) never noticed how big her teeth were in the first place and b) snoozed through all of last weeks episode because she gnashed her way through the WHOLE thing!

Martha. I was sorry to see you go. I'm even more sorry to see you return.

Donna. I Tated the news of her return. I thought she would ruin season 4 with her gurning and screaming. However, she has been superb throughout and a breath of fresh air. After the wide-eyed, rose-tinted lensed, lovesick Rose and Martha, she was exactly what the show needed (older, life-weary, questioning and not in love with the Doctor). And what a shame that as the only new companion with a likeable and interesting family they haven't been involved anywhere nearly as much as the others. Man, I love Cribbins. Give him and his telescope a spin-off.

I hope the conclusion to this story doesn't suck like last season.

That cliffhanger. Where did that come from??!! I was so not expecting that and I loved it. RTD, you are one cheeky monkey!! And as much as I love everything that is, I'm sure to also love what is to come. RTD, you better make good on your promise because that's no way to treat the fans if you don't follow it through.

The Doctor's hand. Yes, I saw you, bubbling away there. Hardly inconspicuous were you. RTD has done most, if not all, the big Doctor Who things now except one: the multi-Doctor episode. Yes, the Children in Need special is as good as canon but Moffat wrote that and I suspect RTD will want to out-do his 7 minutes of glory. There's been rumours/speculation that Tennat will leave when RTD does, but RTD doesn't officially leave until after the specials. Considering that James Nesbitt's name has been banded about, and that he starred in Jekyll written by Moffat, I think there's a good chance that he may take over. So, rather than have the current Doctor teamed with a former incarnation it may well be the current Doctor teamed with the NEXT incarnation (providing the Doctor you know what and the hand grows a new body thanks to it's close proximity). As for Tennant, well, after his specials if he wants to go and live happily ever after with Rose and his fob watch in a parallel universe I'll wish them both the best. I hope the specials are used in a way that allow RTD and Tennant to hand the baton over to Moffat and Nesbitt.

The specials. If the specials deal with the Time War, and RTD really does bring everything he's created full circle by tying up loose ends and covering this story then I'd be quite happy to see Tennant, Nesbitt and McGann working as a team to defeat Davros. I hope there is no reset button. I hope this episode, the Time War and the last 4 years aren't "undone". That would piss me off... but Donna's beetle... I have a worrying doubt... plus I think I'm all Dalek-ed out so 4 specials featuring them may just finish me off.

I suspect the specials will run on Christmas 2008, Easter weekend 2009 and a Christmas Day / Boxing Day double bill 2009 and hope none of them feature robot santas or clockwork killer bunnies.

Who would've thought that Doctor Who would EVER have been the BBC's big, flagship show??! Well done to everyone involved!!! If Tennant gets his big new £1.3m BBC salary to keep him on then I'll be happy because he and this show are worth 10 Casualties / Holby Cities / Holby Blues and every other soap and big name star (like Jonathan Woss and Graham "teeheehee - cock!!" Norton) the BBC decides to squander £130+ of my money on.

This is the most I've ever written. That's how good that episode was. Let's hope next week doesn't disappoint.

That was pretty fucking good. However, the fact we've seen so much of the daleks watered down the threat and the foul taste of the Manhattan fiasco was still in my mouth. Imagine if we hadn't seen the daleks since the Dalek episode of the first season... that would have been a much bigger deal. Davros was fucking ace though. Spot on. I do however fear a big reset button being pressed. Unless the four specials handle the aftermath of events and the regeneration is fucked, causing him to change into diffeent people while Tennant does his own thing and works out if he wants back in?

Well, I'm holidaying in Spain at the moment but thank the heavens I managed to find a BBC broadcast! And I was blown away! I did get that 'er...what was that all about?' feeling about twenety minutes after watching it, but then that's the fun of Doctor Who. I must say that finale really came out of left field, I firmly believe we're going to get two Tennants. And OF COURSE the close ups on the hand must be heading somewhere... But how lovely would it be to see paul McGann in the role... Shame it isn't going to happen. Must admit to feeling terribly sad when Harriet died. I absolutely adore her and she should have had her second chance in charge and enlightened the UK with her 'Golden Age.' Poor cow. As to Billie Piper and her teeth! I think she has just lost weight, she´s hardly the sort of person to resort to plastic surgery, in fact she's spoken out against it in the past. I think she's fantastic. (Though HOW long was that road they were running along?) Golly, I hope next week is as fabulous as last night. Regards one and all and please don't kill Donna. Steven x

I am getting SICK of reading the en-masse slagging off of Russell T Davies and his episodes, some people are just impossible to please!!! This episode had EVERYTHING. It had all the companions from the new era, it even had a companion from the OLD era (Sarah Jane), it had Daleks destroying earth, It had a mad gibbering half destroyed dalek Khan (i had to giggle at that, weird brain like thing squirming about inside the broken dalek casing), it had DAVROS!!!!! It had Davros, you ungrateful fanboy shits!!!!! It had torchwood! Well, whats left of Torchwood, anyway. It had subtle nods to the finale, and of course that final scene was just brilliant. A regeneration! Who would have thunk? It winds me up to hear anyone complain about this new incarnation of Who, about the scripts, about the FX. Obviousley, these whining runts were never around to see the INCREDIBLY poor FX and script writing of the Original Who, which quite frankly deserved to die out. New Who is the Who i deserved to watch back in the 80s, well written, and the effects arent too bad, considering its a british show. All the so called spoilers in this talkback really make me laugh, because no-one really knows whats going on. Except me. I know whats going to happen, the Doctor is going to regenerate into.......DAVID DICKINSON!!!!!! Muahahahahahahaha

Geekgasm !
by RobinP
Jun 29th, 2008

So, how immensely cool was THAT ???? I have huge questions based on some things that we were shown - or, maybe I'm just geekily grasping at straws that aren't even there. Okay - lets look at the cool - Daleks...LOTS of 'em. More menacing than ever. Loved them shooting the hell out of a terraced house, and there's something just awesomely cool about seeing them glide along suburban streets. Those Dalek saucers just take me straight back to my childhood reading TV21. Remember THAT ? The f/x - the planets in the sky....mind blowing. The long awaited reunion between the Doctor & Rose. I was sure the Dalek would shoot her, not him. Where do I begin the geekgasm ? Daleks at Torchwood ? Daleks bearing down on Sarah Jane ? Davros ? What the hell's inside that Red Dalek ? Dalek Khan - clearly off his tits ? Re-gen-er-f'ckin-nation ? Obviously, this was way beyond my expectations. Questions - at the Shadow proclamation, Donna is sitting quietly contemplating something. One of the white haired women there tells her something about her being different...we've heard her described as "something else" before. Does she STILL have something on her back ? Was that....drumming I heard. Drumming equals The Master. A female hand picked up his ring at the end of the last season. Am I on to something ? Dalek Khan spoke of the threefold man coming. Does this mean that Tennant will split in to three ? Both Peter Davison and Sylvester McCoy were interviewed on "Confidential". Wouldn't be the first time the Doctor has had previous incarnations helping him. His most faithful companion will die. Who's that ? Rose ? Martha ? Donna ? Sarah Jane ? I'm not thinking any of those.....I'm thinking TARDIS ! It's a living thing, remember ? I'm hoping the regeneration isn't going to be a copout. We deserve better than that. Some ways this could be tackled: Three way split - 2 previous incarnations and Tennant for one episode, morphing back to Tennant by way of the hand in the jar (it HAS to be there for a reason) Regeneration - bold move. New actor, lots of danger, we'll get used to him fast. Also better than getting used to him over the four specials to be shown next year. The ice will have been broken, so to speak. Reset...the hand in the jar grows a new Doctor or something like that to reset things as they were. Copout and I want my licence money back. Discuss...

Above anything else, RTD's, gleeful joy in getting people screaming in disbelief is on display here.

Absolutely loved the motherfuckingly huge metallic " To Be Continued" that they stamped on the end credits as if to say "Gotcha". Also the wilful lack of any "Next time on Dr Who " clips.

Hope the next ep lives up to this.

Didn't like last week's episode but disliked this week's episode even more. It seemed to me that RTD has been keeping a notebook where he has randomly jotted down over the past couple of years some ideas for his "final" Doctor Who eps (whenever it happened) Now that it is happening, he can't decide between which of these ideas so he put them all in, whether they made any cohesive sense at all. To me, the episode was a complete muddle, very bad acting from Rose, Martha and Sarah-Jane. Disagree with you, Finklestone, thought Catherine Tate's acting was the best of the cast. The episode seemed purely to indulge RTD whims and possibly to give the less popular spinoffs that RTD will continue to work some extra publicity. Please note: I am not an RTD hater, but really hated this ep

based on what others have come with. Perhaps someones suggestion that Donna is the master. The master and davros are in cahoots as is whoever is behind this bug on donna's back. the master (as donna) allows this bug to be on his back to create the chaos needed create the situation he requires to (and here is my possibly lame theory), get the doctor shot at some stage, so that he goes into a state of regeneration, during that regeneration, he manages to leave donna (via the energy craated by the doctors regeneration) and effectively highjack the regeneration process and come back to life, in the meantime (and an unexpected result for the master), the hand, as someone above suggestion, get some of this energy and grows a new David Tennent, and battle ensues. I know there is lots of holes here, but it's just a theory.

The scene of all the planets hanging near each other in space made me think that RTD got the idea from Infinite Crisis, with Davros instead of Alexander Luthor. I enjoyed the episode, but don't think it's the best; I actually preferred The Sound of Drums as a penultimate episode. The Shadow Proclamation just didn't seem to match up at all to what was intimated before whenever the name was invoked.

The reason that the Doctor didn't die when the Dalek shot him was pure luck, it hit the left side of his body, effectively stopping only one of his hearts. Though he has had one heart stopped before it was made clear he couldn't live without them both for long. Add the usual Dalek radiation to the beam and you have one slowly dying Timelord, no mystery there. He will regenerate into someone new, I totally believe that, but the threefold man? 1) Tennant, who dies and regenerates into 2) the new incarnation and 3) something regrown from the hand in the jar, maybe they'll pull a fast one and regrow the Tennant Doctor from it. That way he can leave to spend some time with Rose AND come back for future episodes. But I still stand by my theory on the Master's return. Maybe we won't see it next week but it'll be forshadowed. The hand that picked up the ring was definitely Donna's and if you look at the scene where she's sitting on the stairs again, the ring she wears is a black oval. The dual heartbeat/sound of drums was too much of a coincidence. You can't have Doctor Who without the Master. I'd really love to see Richard E Grant officially become the 11th Doctor, he's cool, funny and quite sinister, a definite change.

That was great - probably liable to break apart under close scrutiny but hey thats 50% of all Who inc hartnell, troughton, pertwee et al. And its a childrens show. And it swept me up quite nicely thank you very much. nearly every cliffhanger ending is a 'copout' - its always the balance of 'how are they going to?' versus the inevitable let down of 'oh they were standing on a trapdoor - how frakking convient'. Right now am enjoying the 'cliffhang' feeling of wonder and can't wait for next weeks ep. as long as theres no house elves. Anyone else pick up on Davros 'drumming' the fingers of his righthand? foreshadowing perhaps? How well does liz sladen look for her age eh? Its simply MEGA CHOC to have Dr Who back the last few years. Moffat eps/RTD eps - whatever - overall its greater than the sum of its parts. Knit me a mutli-coloured scarf please mum.

"This episode had EVERYTHING." - that was the problem, it had literally everything, but to no consequence. It was a sequence of cameo appearances by every character, but if you ask yourself what difference they made to the plot, I think you'll find most of them had none. Remove Sarah Jane and the Torchwood cast and how would the episode have been ANY different? It wouldn't have, except then they'd have had 10 minutes more of screentime to develop the Doctor/Rose/Davros plotlines that was sorely undeveloped. "It had Davros, you ungrateful fanboy shits!!!!!" - yes, and so did Destiny of the Daleks, but that doesn't make it a great story. I'm sorry, but I don't think you can accuse people critical of this episode of being the fanboys. It's the fanboys who seem to be measuring this episode's quality in terms of the quantity of references they spot. Having lived through Doctor Who in the 1980s, I remember how such an approach killed the show back then, because it was a wholly unsatisfying experience for people who weren't in the know, who were watching for a good yarn. Yesterday's episode wasn't a yarn, it was just a televised convention of fan favourites. I hope RTD can pull it all together next week, but the rumours that he's going to try and cram even MORE into it (Mickey, the Tylers, the Master) just doesn't bode well.

. they were round the corner from their house, i fail to see the big coincidence? The humour. As with all humour, you'll make some people laugh and other go "meh". In my house we were laughing ourselves silly at pretty much all the jokes "yes we know who you are" quality. Oh and you'd better believe there'd be some "normal" telly on, ANything, ANYTHING to try and distract people from what was going on. That's the oldest trick in the book. Definately one of the most exciting episodes, and probably one of the top 10 episodes of all Dr. Who. Ever. Oh and trusting the one person in the whole organisation to have travelled in time etc, really is NOT that much of a stretch.

Hell, even Donna didn't annoy me at all. Most likely because there was too much going on and keep up with but still, a minor miricle. And talk about cliffhanger!!!! Either the Who team have managed to pull off the greatest stunt in TV history by keeping Tennents exit a secret or its a hell of a ruse. My opinion is that its a ruse. The regeneration into Tennent had a problem, this one will too. I'm betting on the Doctor being split into previous incarnations, all individually weak but finding a way to combine their strenghs to defeat Davros. And my moneys on Rose taking one for the team. Martha and her incredible arse is in Torchwood next season and Donna has some big destiny to fulfil which will most likely be difficult to do if she's a corpse!! So Rose dead next week and recombined versions of Who to carry on as Tennent but with some serious changes to his character. Thats my theory at least. ...

I assume, when taking the job for 2010, Moffat was made aware of the planned story arc for the coming episodes and specials and is happy with them. If a writer of his quality is happy then I am re-assured that all will not be too silly - eg a human twin Doctor or such codswallop.

I'm suprised nobody has mentioned it. It seems so unbelievably obvious to me. The answer to how the Doctor can regenerate and yet maintain the same actor. The hand. They made a point of showing it periodically, including in the closing shot of the regeneration. One of the companions, will grow a clue, take the hand out of the container and toss it to the Doctor while he's regenerating. The doctor will end up regenerating into the same form based on information contained in the hand. Sure it's a copout, but it's the obvious copout.

All this talk about Donna being The Rani and a Time Lord and whatnot - surely she is just a normal person who will go on to do extraordinary things. I'm thinking she wipes away this entire timeline by self sacrifice. Yes? Anyone? But then again it would be very unlike Russell to kill off a companion or leave us with a downer finale. I've steered clear of the spoilers as I'm sure they're out there just waiting to ruin everything! But I refuse to read them! May the next week just zip by! Steven x

I haven't heard anything about Tom Baker coming back or any of the others infact. Personally seeing Baker just one last time as Who would make my day. He's the Doctor I grew up with. Its just with the huge cameo count (micky is back next week too!!) I wouldnt be stunned if we saw at least 2 old versions of Who turn up. Plus that tagline for next weeks episode that Herc found 'the Doctor is weak' thing leads me to think that the regeneration will screw up again. Plus Tennent has already filmed the Christmas special so he's not going anywhere soon.

McCoy had a bowler hat for that episode of Confidential, not the straw hat he wore during his time as the 7th Doctor in the Classic Series and the 1996 TV Movie. The reason why they had Davison and McCoy in the special is because both of their Doctors faced off against Davros. I assume Tom Baker was unwilling to tape a segment for the special since it was his Doctor who met Davros first.

Calufrax? The Key to Time?!
by Sans Souci
Jun 29th, 2008
10:00:50 AM
First off, smashing episode.

Second, since everyone has already jumped on the Donna/Master/Rani possibility, multiple Doctors popping up, and maybe even Jenny joining the mix, here's one thing I noticed that could be a big ol' red herring, but... At the Shadow Proclamation, the Doctor discovers one of the missing worlds is Callufrax Minor.

Calufrax was the planet that got pulped during the course of "The Pirate Planet" segment of "The Key to Time" saga. It turned out Calufrax wasn't a real planet but a disguised piece of the Key. It was noted that because of this, the Captain's plan to use Calufrax as a part of a weapon against Queen Nursie would fail because it wasn't "natural."

So if this Callufrax Minor is the same the Key Calufrax, does that mean the Daleks are facing a similar "spanner to the works" deal?

After the Key to Time story wrapped up, the segments of the key were supposed to be redistributed around the universe. It seems highly unlikely the White Guardian would return the Calufrax segment to its previous form. The addition of the "Minor" suggested a companion planet or moon, but nobody ever referred to a Calufrax Major during "Pirate Planet."

Still...Martha's got that Key that Jack seems very worried about and that Harriet (who went out rocking, btw) was interested in. Given the amount of chaos the Daleks have caused by literally ripping planets from the sky and lumping them into their crucible, could the Key to Time be the only thing to return balance to the universe?

Interesting theory. Mine is different. In their second appearance, Dalek Invasion of Earth, which was the basis for the second feature film, the Daleks tried to make the Earth pilotable...I assumed this is what the Doctor meant, as he didn't know who was behind the plot this time around. Also, interestingly, Brenard Cribbins co-starred in the movie, but it's non-canon.

Grace: Unknown, Probably alive in New York, but as she did nothing special with the Doctor, and didn't travel with him, she's hardly useful.

Ace: Likely dead, as it has been implied that the 7th Doctor enrolled her in the Academy on Gallifrey, so she could become a Time Lady or Time Agent.

Mel: Last we saw she was exploring the universe with Sabalom Glitz, likely forcing him to drink carrot juice.

Peri: Consort to King Yrcanos of the Krontep.

Leela: Likely dead, as she decided to remain on Gallifrey.

Romana: Dead. She was a Time Lady.

Tegan: Not coming back. Left because she was sick of seeing so much death.

Adric: Dead. Crashed into Earth and killed the dinosaurs.

Kamelion: Destroyed.

Nyssa: Diseased, remained on Terminus.

K9: Which one? :)

Harry: On Earth, in his 60s, at least.

Jo Grant: Last seen exploring the Amazon with her fiance.

Liz Shaw: On Earth. Probably retired.

Mike Yates: Nobody cares.

The Brigadier: Apparently on vacation, but still active.

Zoe: Time Lords returned her to her own time stream.

Victoria: Last seen on Earth, but not very useful in a fight.

Jamie: Memory erased. Returned to 1700s.

Ben & Polly: On Earth, likely dead, or elderly.

Dorothea: Returned to London 1966. Likely dead or elderly.

Katarina: Dead.

Steven: On Planet of the Savages.

Vicki: Remained in ancient Troy.

Ian & Barbara: Returned to 1960s Earth. Probably dead by now.

Susan: Left with David Campbell. Likely dead. Turlough: On Sarn. Not coming back.

Few of these companions could return. Ace is possible, but only if the stories about her being a freelance Time Agent are true. If she ever became a Time Lady, she died with the rest of them. If neither happened, then her whereabouts are unknown. (We don't know what's canon at this point; The show was canceled.)

Peri would be no help. She was hardly one of the Doctor's most clever companions, and the last time she knew him, he was in his Sixth regeneration, which was very nasty to her most of the time.

Mel won't be back. Besides the fact that nobody liked her, there's the fact that she was probably stranded on some backwater world by Glitz after she annoyed him too much.

RobinP - That movie isn't canon.

BIG SPOILERS BELOW

Sorry folks but here's how the final episode ends. Don't read if you want to keep it a surprise. * * * * * A brown suited Tennant Doctor is outside Donna's home with her, talking to grandad wilf. Suddenly Donna collapses and he calls out something like "Help me! Get her inside." Later, it's dark and the Doctor is leaving, alone. He turns to Wilfred and mentions the atmospheric disturbances caused by moving the earth back. Then says "She can never know the truth." Grandad talks about how they'll look after Donna but says "What about you Doctor? You're alone. When I look up at the stars, I'll think of you" and as it starts to rain, Tennant walks sadly away from the house and toward the TARDIS. The footage above was caught on a camera phone and posted on the web so it's the genuine article. However... There still remains speculation, this scene may in fact take place before the final battle and the Doctor leaves Donna at home to face Davros himself but this is unlikely. And during multiple takes of the above, one part has the Doctor touching the TARDIS then turning around to run back to the house. Whether this is just a him prepping for a retake is unknown. Another has the Doctor stop at the TARDIS and put his head against the door as if he's trying to cool his cheek, crying? Maybe. It's going to be a long week.

"The Doctor has only ever been shot by a Dalek twice before"
by fiester
Jun 29th, 2008

It's amazing the Daleks don't institute a shoot first, ask questions later policy when it comes to The Doctor.

It reminded me of the River Song two-parter, when she punched him: I couldn't recall ever seeing The Doctor punched before. It's rare he ever gets his ass kicked. The Doctor, it seems, would be powerless against a martial arts planet.

Speaking of new villains, it seems high time for the introduction of a new major nemesis for The Doctor. I like that the new series has given major respect for the tradition of the show--more so than any other restart ever has--but how about something new? A major something new? A villain or an alien race with the intelligence and malevolence to truly match The Doctor in new and unexpected ways. This would be refreshing. I mean, I love me some Daleks--but it's ALWAYS the Daleks. And if it's not the Daleks, it's the Cybermen. So how about some new baddies that are not a one-off?

Nesbitt
by fiester
Jun 29th, 2008
12:22:54 PM
I don't understand the Nesbitt hate. I'm American, so maybe he's overexposed in the UK, but I enjoyed his performance in Jekyll and think he'd make a fine Doctor. I remember all the moaning when Tate was named as the new companion--and she's proved to be very good.

As far as the Donna speculation is concerned, I don't think she's a concealed Time Lord turned human, simply because she has a family. Something else is going on with her. Maybe something is growing in her, as the stairs sequence seemed much more like a heartbeat than drums to me.

But that big ass ring...

I'm also expecting the hand to regen into Tennant, perhaps a single hearted, human Doctor who will go and live happily ever after with Rose in the alternate dimension and the other two-hearted Tennant can continue on as a Time Lord in this dimension knowing that Rose is happy and with him, in a way. It seems weird but there it is. "Three-fold man" suggests three Tennants, not three Time Lords. So I expect to see three Tennants next episode: one will die, one will go off with Rose, and the third will continue on in this reality.

Not bad at all!
by spud mcspud
Jun 29th, 2008
12:24:32 PM
It was all a bit "everything and the kitchen sink", and I think the excellent return of Davros was cancelled out by the shower of shite that is Torchwood, but it was fun precisely because of the amount of ideas rammed in there, and driven by that breakneck pace it had. Admittedly, I fully expect it to go tits up next week, but I was pleasantly surprised this week, so hmm... Not sure WHAT to expect!

Was anyone else a bit fed up of the Whoniverse gabble crammed in there though? It's a bit weak from a screenwriting perspective just to go "WE could use... Project INDIGO!" "No! Not Project Indigo!" "Then we need... the Osterhagen Key!" "NO! Not the Osterhagen KEY!" etc etc ad nauseam. Just throwing in cool-sounding code words for concepts not even hinted at is a bit amateur: if you're going to use, say, a screwdriver to save the day, at some point previously you must see that screwdriver so you know the hero has it - even if the fact it's gonna be useful is completely hidden. The whole Project Indigo and Osterhagen Key thing was a bit last minute. And then the whole meaningless Time War Whospeak came up: we've had the Master fleeing the fall of Arcadia, we've had the destruction of the Medusa Cascade (which we now know is a galaxy or solar system) and now supposedly Davros was seen "flying into the mouth of the Nightmare Child... I tried to save you!". Lines like that just sound cheesy. It's all a bit late '80s 200AD... or is that just me?

It was alright, fun if you didn't think too much about it, ruined by the inclusion of Torchwood, and falls apart under the slightest bit of intelligent analysis - which is EXACTLY what I expect from RTD, the man who made new Who LOOK great, but has no clue how to write a coherent, intelligent narrative. Bad Wolf still makes no sense whatsoever...

I hope there isn't a dirty great reset button or a fake regen to ruin next week's show. But we know there will be, won't there? *sigh*

Torchwood

Okay, I stopped watching Torchwood a while ago. It really was proving most tedious. I gather the group is down to three members now. And therein lies the biggest problem for me: I can't buy that small a group begin capable of much. We're supposed to believe they are above and beyond UNIT and look at the size of UNIT. I suppose they can pilice the rift in Wales, but that's about it. If that show's to continue they need a massive influx of new talent. And interesting talent, not simply pansexual talent. Sexuality is not character, it's merely an aspect of it and I think that show lost sight of that along the way. Which is too bad as there's still great potential for the show. Maybe get it out of Wales though.

I think its safe to assume that all of you have seen the episode now or have had the ending spoiled so Im not going to hold back. Having said that if by some miracle you've gotten this far and not had it spoiled then **SPOILERS AHEAD** We all know that when the doctor dies he regenerates (assuming he wants to) into a new person. (as seen in The Parting of the Ways). But what about when he's just injured?? In The Christmas Invasion the doctors hand is cut off and he regenerates a new one but his appearence is the same. So I think because he's not actually dead the regeneration will just repair his exsiting body and keep his appearence the same (thats why we see the Doctors Cut Off hand in this ep) Also all signs point to a multiple doctor episode for next week. Perhaps doctors from the past, Doctors from the future or Doctors from a Parrallel Universe (since the walls are breaking down between them) "The ThreeFold Man" Hmmmmmmm??

I have promo pics of the Doctor and Martha from before Martha's episodes, and in them he's wearing both the blue and brown suits. Martha's shown with different outfits, too. In some she's got suitpants while in others she's wearing jeans. Her jacket changed a bit as well.

So I think the brown suit/blue suit thing is a bit far-fetched.

I think they should get Nicola Bryant as Peri in there to become the Doctor's newest long-term nemesis. Either her or Sophie Aldred/Ace. Think about it: Wouldn't the best arch-enemy for the doctor be a companion who traveled with him, learned everything he could teach them, and then was abandoned by the Doctor at some point?

Picture an angry Ace screaming at the Doctor over a telescreen: "You LEFT me! You ABANDONED me! I HATE you, Professor! And now you will die!"

I would assume that, being a Time Lady, Romana would have long since left Exo-Space, having completed her chosen mission. She didn't need the Doctor to bail her out. She would have freed the slaves and returned to Gallifrey when the call to war came.

The Doctor wouldn't say he's the only Time Lord left if he knew Romana were tucked into Exo-Space. It's a good bet she was there when Gallifrey burned.

There are so many balls up in the air at the moment and I don't believe RTD is going to be able to juggle them all to a successful conclusion next episode, which would be a shame as this episode was quite fantastic.

If, as seems to be the speculation, the Doctor's regeneration is going to unleash three versions of him or even previous versions of him, then I'll feel quite cheated. I think regenerations should mean something in Doctor Who. They always have. Watching The Doctor change from one person to the next has always been frightning but exciting. It's the most epic event in "Doctor Who". To have that moment squandered will be awful in my eyes and when Tennant really does regenerate at the end of his reign, it won't feel as special in my eyes.

I think a lot of the traits that people said made Rose Tyler more real are exactly what Ace was doing years earlier. Like Rose, Ace was proactive: she'd get involved, rather than squealing a lot and waiting to be rescued. To this day, I have no idea why Martha's character was so obviously under-developed and so badly written: I don't think Freema is a bad actress by any standards - I think with a more fleshed out background she'd have been the equal of Rose Tyler, but I think RTD was still so in love with the idea of Rose's character that he was half-hearted about what to do with Martha. I also think he may have had problems with writing a black companion realistically too, as her family tended to be very stereotypical - over-achieving but emotionally frigid Mum, the wide boy Dad, the borderline-gangasta brother Leo, the materialistic sister - everything about Martha's family screamed "token ethnic family in Eastenders". Total failure on RTD's part to follow up Rose's character with someone equally interesting, which is a shame - I think Freema gave Martha some real potential, which just gets squandered every time. Freema should just tell the Beeb to go fuck themselves and go over to PRIMEVAL, just to REALLY piss Rusty off.

That last post got a bit confusing. I think Rose has been to date easily the most fleshed out and rounded companion in new Who. Martha had a lot of potential, but completely unrealised by some truly uninpsired writing and some incomptenet handling of her and her family. Donna's been fine - not the train wreck we expected, but certainly two-dimensional in more episodes than most will readily admit. Ace was the proto-Rose, and as such would be a fantastic inclusion in new Who in the way Sarah-Jane was: we need Ace to team up with Rose against the Daleks, who Ace would actually remember too! Give Ace some love, people. She deserves it.

McCoy's Doctor was actually a shrewd bastard with a very dark edge to him which is why I liked him. Plus he had Ace at his side. You can't go wrong with Ace at your side. Bring her back! I never saw Sarah Jane Smith's adventures with the Doctor but I sure do remember Ace's.

As an older Dr Who fan, who started watching it in the Pertwee era, I can categorically guarantee that the Sylvester McCoy / Ace / Bonnie Langford era was the absolute end of Dr Who for most viewers. It had always been a bit camp and cheap, but people were happy to accept the dodgy sets and monster costumes because there had always been a genuinely disturbing undercurrent to most of the Doctor's adventures up until then. But suddenly in the late eighties, for some inexplicable reason, the BBC in its infinite wisdom decided to completely jump the shark with Dr Who by aiming it firmly at a juvenile audience, with scenarios and characters that went way beyond silly into downright cringey territory. 'Ace' was one of those characters that epitomises that era; A grown woman dressed in a late 1980's 12-year-old's street fashion, using the urban vernacular of the time while fighting the most embarassingly silly foes that have ever appeared in the wjhole series. They then went on to out-do themselves with the introduction of Bonnie "please put a bullet in my annoying fucking cranium" Langford as the Doctor's assistant. For many viewers, it really was 'game over'. And indeed, the series was cancelled. It would be fair to say that most older viewers don't consider that era to be Dr Who canon. In fact, most older viewers didn't even watch it by then, it was so fucking "Blue Peter" awful.
Ace was cute. And dangerous.

Yeah, Peri was hot, too, but I actually liked Sophia Aldred a lot. Ace was a great companion; She was aggressive, she called the Doctor "Professor", she ended up on an alien planet in a different time because she, herself, whipped up a Time Storm and accidentally transported herself there. She made Nitro-9 canisters that were excellent for blowing shit up, and she always brought a few even when the Doctor told her not to. She was proficient with a baseball bat, and had a really nice ass and legs, to boot. She was very generation X.

Peri was interesting, but once the Sixth Doctor came around, Peri spent most of her time being bullied and belittled by the Doctor. It's no wonder she left him to marry King Yrcanos. At least Yrcanos praised her beauty and intelligence and spirit!

I think we can ALL agree, however, that nobody's looking forward to the return of Mel.

Donna Romana?

If Donna is turning out to be closer to the Doctor than we've been lead to believe, she may not be the Rani. As the Master, Davros and an improbable score of Dalkes have done, maybe Romana survived the Time War, regenerated into Donna and did the Chameleon Arch thing to either hide from the fallout or just forget the horror of it all.

Richard Dawkins' cameo then becomes a little in-joke since he's married to Romana actress Lala Ward. Oot!

Doctor's most faithful companion, however...hmph, would have to be K-9, no? :-)

I watched a few Tom Baker and Peter Davison Doctor Who episodes when I was younger, but my immature self couldn't get past the cheapish special effects used on the show. I officially came aboard the TARDIS with Russell Davies, Christopher Eccleston, and Billie Piper in 2005. I now love the concept and the show, and want to go back and watch some of the older epics.

Can any of you longtime Doctor Who fans suggest some of the older series or stories for me to watch? I'll be watching (the apparently non-canon) "Daleks Invasion Earth 2150" later tonight.

I will say, however, that that big honking ring she was sporting is new. It was not on her hand in "Left Turn". I suppose it could be she just puts on jewelry as she feels like it, but still it seems fishy.

I'm hoping for the best, but I do have a feeling there's a lot of deus ex machina to come before it's all said and done. The Osterhagen Key will be used (whatever it does).

Are the Daleks trying to collapse all universes? That's the impression I'm getting thanks to Rose's presence. "Turn Left" established that the "darkness" wasn't just in the Donna-centered parallel, but all worlds.

Could be the Daleks and Davros are exploiting the Void (where a whole bunch of pepperpots got stashed after the events of "Doomsday") to collapse the DW multiverse into a single reality where the Daleks reign supreme. Certainly would feed Davros' god complex.

The promo for next week does see Dav doing a nihilistic rant. If total destruction is his goal, why are the Daleks taking humans? Can't be for processing into Daleks since Davros made it clear that these world-stealing dustbins were "pure" creatures crafted from his own Kaled flesh. Which BTW, ick!

I didn't say that the ring Donna has been seen wearing was the Master's ring from appearance, just that since her goal during that time period was to find the Doctor, it would be justified that she could have stumbled upon it in that way. The fact that she wasn't a part of that series doesn't mean she didn't exist during that time period.

I'd like to point out that Ace came after Bonnie Langford. And I Always hated Mel, but Ace grew on me. In the later episodes the scripts picked up, but the budget and production values had disintergrated. I am really hoping we do see some McCoy action in the finale, looks promising! Someone up the top actually seemed to think the 90 McGann film deserved carrying on from. I think it's a shame that it's considered cannon myself! However it would be a waste not to use McGann who was himself very good. I got back from holiday last night and watched the last two episodes on the trot, loved them both. yeah there was a lot of stuff poured into last night's but shit it was fun! And all those characters had enough behind them already to make the most of their bits. I thought the Torchwood relationships were done very well (for those who haven't seen it, skip season 1 and just was the 2nd) I would liek the pace slowed for the finally, some good dialogue and please don't fuck up some great set up like last season!

Think about this: Davros uses whatever device he has to control reality. The companions defeat his plan. it looks like Donna is alone in the TARDIS at some pint, so maybe it is just her. They manage to hit the reset button. if so, that means it is possible the doctor could regenerate into the eleventh Doctor, whoever that is, then be reverted back to the Tenth after the reset. That would give fansa big teaser as to who the next doctor would be, assuming tennant does not stay for the fifth season.

Not very likely to happen, but it isa cool idea to keep fans buzzing over the relatively lite Who 2009.

right, so having watched this episode twice now I think:

1) If this ep was a wine, it'd be described as "rambunctious". Not a bad thing, but not great either unless you're into big messes.

2) The cliffhanger is not as good as TNG's Best Of Both Worlds, and still nothing is.

3) Donna is not wearing The Master's ring and she was not hearing a Sound-Of-Drums heart beat. If anything the Subwave signal sounds like the Sound-Of-Drums beat, but probably just a geeky coincidence.

4) If they reset everything in the next ep it'll be too much like the reset used at the end of season 3, and we've already seen that story so I'm leaning more toward that next episode will involve multiple universes, probably multiple doctors, and possibly the ultimate resolution of the Time War (let's do the Time War again - hehe, that's funny). Perhaps it will see the return of the Time Lords (hey, if a Dalek can enter a time locked event, why can't Time Lords leave it?)...

There's so many great ClassicWho stories as long as you can get past the no-budget sfx and poor production values. You can find them on DVD, import DVD, through NetFlix, old VHS, on YouTube, and of course the torrents. If you want to see the original, rent/buy/whatever the "Doctor Who - The Beginning" DVD box set...that's what started it all with the 1st Doctor and his granddaughter Susan. From the 2nd Doctor, it would be "The War Games" and "Tomb of the Cybermen". 3rd Doctor has many... "Spearhead from Space" which "Rose" later borrowed from..."Day of the Daleks" which *12 Monkeys* swiped the premise from but got wrong..."Inferno" which was an adventure to a mirror universe..."Planet of the Spiders"...and many more, especially the ones with The Master. From the 4th Doctor, there's tons... "The Talons of Weng-Chiang", "Robots of Death", "Genesis of the Daleks", "The Deadly Assassin" which *The Matrix* later ripped off shamelessly, "The Pirate Planet" written by Douglas Adams himself, the "Key to Time" season which Buffy later appropriated for the character of Dawn, "The Keeper of Traken" and "Logopolis"... From the 5th Doctor, the best Who story ever until Steven Moffat wrote his stories for NewWho... "The Caves of Androzani". There's also "Earthshock" and "The Five Doctors". From the 6th Doctor there's the entire "Trial of a Time Lord" serial... I'd skip the 7th Doctor stories and then head straight into the 1996 TV Movie which if you live in the States you won't find on VHS or DVD and you'll either have to import or watch online through the torrents or wait for Starz or SciFi to reair it. I highly recommend you check out NetFlix's selection first and then hit up YouTube and the other sources.

I've got 2 theories. One- this regeneration is going to solve the running out of regen's problem- It's going to fail and they'll use davros' cloning technology on the hand- voila, Tennant's back and they've a ready made justification for another 13 regenerations. Or (and I hope this isn't the case) RTD's going to run to form and hit a big fat Osterhagen reset button.

Agreed with you on the Ianto thing - he either spent the episode grafted to Barrowman's chest on the verge of tears, or fake-laughing at a show that seems to continue to be produced AT THE END OF THE FUCKING WORLD, or showing what a magnificent wuss he is when firing that gun at the end. glad to see RTD learned something from the SW prequels anyway: Davros is coming into his own, in the same way Ian McDiarmid made the Emperor much more rounded as a character in ROTS. Can't wait to see what Dav has planned for next week.

My pick for the 11th Doctor is...

It's a tough, tough call. As an earlier poster mentioned, DT is now THE definitive Doctor. So who wants to follow that? Probably that's enough to scare off most.

I have a list, beginning with the dream picks they could never get:

Simon Pegg: would be amazing, has already worked on the show, is a huge fan and total geek, would seriously have to think about it if the role was offered to him. On the down side he's a big Hollywood ACTOR now, in the new Star Trek, would not be able to commit the time and even then, if by some miracle he did decide to do it, would proably only be on for the one season.

Eddie Izzard: would bring a formidable verbal arsenal to the role. Dunno if he's worked with any of these peeps before or even if he'd have any interest, already attached to an ongoing show ("The Riches") though for how much longer is anyone's guess.

Hugh Laurie: would be fantastic. Enough said. Also big time American TV star--much bigger than Izzard--would never leave his "House" and the big bucks he gets to live in it.

So. Those are the top three. Now how about some more realistic candidates:

Richard E. Grant: Available. Has done Who related work before. Talented and versitile. Presumably needs work.

James Nesbitt: Moffit favorite. Rumored ot have been offered the role already and turned it down because he did not want to follow DT.

Jennifer Saunders: Rumors flying about her taking on the role. Would sort of make sense since this is the most radical departure from DT you can get. Is talented and funny. This is the horse I would bet on for #11.

Rowen Atkinson: Don't see it happening. When has Atkinson ever demonstrated the ability for dramatic acting?

Martin Freeman: A sleeper choice. Perhaps too much in the DT mold.

Some wild cards and dark horses:

Kevin McKidd: from "Rome" and "Journeyman". Fine actor. Would be darker and more action orientated--would Moffet go for it if he could get him? Dunno.

Mackenzie Crook: Gareth from UK's "The Office". Oddball, funny, bizarre. Would be a bold choice. (and before anyone says it, yes I considered Ricky Gervais. No. Would not work in a million years. However...)

Stephen Merchant: tallest Doctor ever? Most certainly. How bizarre a casting choice would that be? And yet, and yet--I could see it working! No clue why. But this horse is so dark it may as well not even exist.

Mitchell & Webb: Yes, two Doctors at the same time! Hey, it could happen. Okay, this one is a goof, but how I'd love to see the "Peep Show" boys running the TARDIS. Heh.

I'm certain there are more. This is a fun game.

The mention of Captain Jack makes me fucking cringe- Barrowman's acting has got worse by the week and his appearance is always the cue for millions of comments about how much every bugger in the universe wants to fuck him- This week it was Donna and "Don't even think about it". Do we really need it?

And Gwen is fucking minging. Why do people fancy here. She's got worse teeth than Billie and you've all been nowt but rude about her all TB.

does anyone else on here constantly confuse Kris Marshall (My Family, or that sitcom about estate agents, or those annoying BT broadband adverts) with Julian Rhind-Tutt (the guy in those Barclaycard ads who always bails out Stephen Mangan)? No?

ah. Just me then.

Jarv, re Gwen - she has a certain something, it's just that those teeth don't half get in the way. You could definitely pilot a badly-CG'd TARDIS or two through the gap! Oh, and Barrowman's come-on to Sarah-Jane? Show some fucking respect, Barrowman!

Nope - only Hugh Laurie would work for me off that list, and only if he played The Doctor the same as House.

I call Ade Edmondson for the 11th. He can do dramatic (he's surprisingly good in DOCTORS, or is it HOLBY CITY?), and certainly can chew scenery. Who's with me?

this episode was definately an eye opener. but unless they are all a ruse.. i'm referring to the news that Tennant is in the xmas episode, specials next year, and reportedly getting 100,000 an episode for season 5, our hero will be saved from regeneration (be it something to do with Rose, the shadow proclamation or the key thingy (most likely the solution to repel the new dalek empire). The episode itself was brilliantly built up to a knock-out cliffhanger. Some of the plot seemed a little contrived if only to squeeze into 45 mins (60 mins ending on saturday). However I have to add two things that just didn't seem right. 1. In the scenes near the start, everyone was just wanting to give up without trying and Jack's "were dead" seemed dull, a very brief summary of what he went through before would have been better ("I fought these things before, It's going to be dangerous" maybe(can't write dialogue either)). 2. the scene at the "phone call" to the doctor, we see the tardis floating in space and sound waves stream out from earth. Well in my opinion it looked like a scene from the 70s era. Tardis on a string and animated rings. Of note though, if you are from uk... check out gallifreyone or bbc website...or bbc youtube to see the only teaser so far for Journey's end. looks like either Donna or the Tardis are the faithful companion.

Regardless of the over-the-top writing at times in this episode or Sarah Jane seeming out of place etcetcetc... there were still some pretty cool moments... We've heard about the Shadow Proclamation for a long while now and we finally got to see their base! Most importantly perhaps, the Doctor broke that compact that he has spouted to so many of the various enemies over the seasons by leaving without leading the Shadow folks to war... The Medusa Cascade! How cool was that? My question though, what was it the Doctor was saying about the Cascade and why he couldn't get there? Was it all about being one second out of phase with the rest of the universe? If he knew he couldnt get there why was he telling people he wanted to take them to one of its broken moons? Weird. And seems like a lot of people arent talking about one other key element... the Daleks wanted the Doctor to come to the Cascade. They took these 27 planets and moons and put them in a place where they functioned together perfectly... for... what? There is some Master Plan here from the Daleks we have not even seen yet in addition to all the other stuff going on... ... and no matter if you thought the episode was complete rubbish... that ending is going to have everyone talking and speculating all week and *that* makes at least the ending damned fine writing.

Kudos for the BBC for at least being able to keep it relatively under wraps. I must say it worked - it has led me to LOST level anticipation to for the next episode taking any morsels of news I can get. Even though there is no way David Tennant is leaving. You just can't introduce a new Doctor in the last episode.

After watching confidential, they were showing clips from Doomsday. I hadn't noticed just how much the SFX have improved even since a couple of seasons ago. Those Daleks looked espcially crap.

So who would be the ultimate never-going-to-happen dream choice to play Doctor Who? Personally I'd love to see an unhingned Johnny Depp take on the role. Maybe they could do another non-canon cinematic Dalek movie.....

Well there were definitely good bits. Davros was terrific. Dalek Caan was hilarious. Plenty of other cool bits. And what a cliffhanger.

On the other hand, the crossover stuff sucked up too much screen time. I had high hopes for Torchwood, but it really just fell apart. When we see Torchwood early on in Who, they're a top-secret organization with almost unlimited resources and incredible technology. On the actual show, they're just a few guys running around chasing dumb aliens in a cheap SUV and hiding in a small underground office. There's no sense of scale; there's no sense of the resources or incredible technology. And true to form, when Jack mentions that he knows what Project Indigo is...here's the chance to reinforce how good Torchwood is. But does Jack know about the project because Torchwood just knows so much? Of course not. Instead, he got the info from a guy in a bar. Please.

And I see people defending the Sarah Jane Adventures, but I find the show intolerable. Like so many shows aimed at children, it's full of dumb cliches and ridiculous stories. Sonic *lipstick*? What is this, the 1950s? Oh and since it's a show for kids, naturally we need some kid protagonist, because clearly children could never love a show starring adults. Gahhhhh.

Finally...RTD, as mentioned in last week's talkback, usually starts these 2-parters rather well, but every finale has (so far) ended up with a reset button, Deus ex Machina, or both. I don't see how he fixes all of this without one or the other at a minimum. Hey, if he manages to do it, great, but he's got no track record for it.

There is no way that this is how David Tennant, the best Doctor probably ever, at least in top 2 dies.

When he started regenerating I was shouting at the TV, I am not kidding, I hope something goes wrong with the regeneration I really do.

However

The rumours that were going about a while ago...along with some plot details and the fact that they would never be able to hide soemoen new as the Doctor...got me thinking.

If this is not how it plays out then I should be fucking writing Doctor who, although I will be in prison for smashing RTD's head right in.

They are in a time hole or something, outside normal time, also there were rumours of old Doctors coming back in this finale?

What if instead of regenerating properly, it causes 1 or more of the old Doctors to appear together while in this place?

3 Doctors versus the Daleks?

3 groups of freedom fighters, Marth and Unit, Torchwood and SJ, and DT with Rose and Donna...Hmmm

Has anyone heard anything to indicate this is DT's last hurrah as the Doc, because until next week I am going to be panicking that this was how he punked out, shot at long range by a Dalek, he should at least have been killed by Davros if thats how he goes out?

Oh and yes SJ should ahve stayed at home with her stupid kidie computer and Torchwood should have been annihalated by the Daleks, Gwen and Iainto we should have saw burning alive as they screamed, and Jack should have been blasted by a disintigrator that he could not come back from, I hate those clowns.

Older Daleks worked because they didn't say much? Really? I think your memory isn't all that good. You could barely shut the stupid things up. Go back and watch the utter disaster that is Destiny of the Daleks, and then tell me how they were so much more effective because they didn't say much.

IMO the episode "Dalek" set the Daleks up as more effective and fearsome than they've been in decades. The Evolution/Manhattan stuff may have dimmed that somewhat, but even so.

I've never been into the new Who. I grew up with Peter Davidson's DR and the new ones have just seemed too childlike. However, I have been watching this series and have enjoyed most of the episodes. Usually the darker Moffat inspired ones though. The last Episode (Stolen Planet) was, though, just a load of free advertising for the BBC. I don't watch Torchwood, I don't watch the Sarah Jane adventures; ego I don't care about them. Yet here they are, being thrust in my general direction. OK so Sarah Jane has some attachment but wtf cares about anyone else? Cool cross-overs work (Hulk/Iron Man). Crap, sef indulgdent RTD cross-overs don't. And I'm sorry, but we KNOW that Dave T is back so this whole regeneration thing is gonna be one big cop out. Something along the lines of "He's been regenerated as the same DR because of his vital knowledge and relationship with the specific humans". You heard it here first folks. :)

Since people from the barbelith website quoted me last week, this time I'll return the favour...

"What's a type of noble? A Lord. What does Donna mean in Italian? Lady. Lord, lady. Time Lady?"

Add to that, Noble also means inert. Add in the "I'm a temp" and the latin root (tempus) meaning "of time" references that have been more and more pronounced, and honestly it will be a big big surprise if she turns out NOT to be a time lord/lady ooooh, extra theory . Donna got to the tardis originally by being attracted by the HUON particles, that were both in her and in the tardis.. Maybe that's how (if indeed she was to) gets into the Time locked time war.? We did see her having another drink of water, that's how she got full of 'em in the first place...

You know....

I was thinking about that Donna noble stuff too. We are all clutching at straws here. All this time/lord lady stuff could be just nonsense. however. The way her character is written, i dont buy it that she will suddenly become more heroic. there will have to be a point where donna is told the full truth.possibly by gramps. her act is seen as an act of noble courage. whatever it is. hence her name donna noble.

THE EXTRA HEARTBEAT.... Timelords have two hearts.

The draw between Donna and The Doctor, which was repeatedly hinted at, and the deliberate comments at the start of this season where she made it clear she didn't 'fancy him' one bit. It's because SHE'S HIS DAUGHTER.

Donna is a Time Lady. "Noble" = Lords & Ladies. "Donna" = Lady.

well, i am going with the comments at the beginning being ironic and her regenerating into river song. I think that's crazy to add that on top of her being a timelord.. but hell, why not, if you are going to speculate, speculate WILDLY, AND CRAZILY.

is in line with the way Martha was written and rose. They were all down on thier luck, working class types, who were bored of THier humdrum lives. Donna's set up was different in that she was a runaaway bride. But as we know in saeson 4. She was living with her nagging mum and of course Bernard Cribbins. and she hadnt seen the dr since the events in the runaway bride.

that is officially the shittiest thing I've ever fucking heard and runs against all RTD's own canon.

It also, furthermore, confirms the fact that Martha was only ever a stop-gap that RTD didn't fecking want.

did throw me a bit. So did the beats at the beginning of the former MP's communication. But I think it's too early to go back to the Master well.

Donna does through me, perhaps all those ancient particles changed her, but I can't believe it would make her into a timelord. My bet is on the beetle.

but it's FUN nonsense... I think for river song to come up into the game this late in the day, they would have foreshadowed it a bit more in part one. Having said that, i am pretty sure we'll see Mickey back, and they haven't really foreshadowed THAT at all either. If this really is a collision of realities... does each reality have it's own Doctor? if so, are they all at different points in the doctors evolution? IS there another Gallifrey? Another tardis? Another Master?

i believe(although i may be wrong)that the doctor and the tardis used to be able to travel between dimensions and realities but the tardis malfunctioned(like the cameilion chip) and is now confined to our reality.(The tardis is similar to the millenium falcon, cool as f**k and able to do all sorts of neat stuff, but is now a bit old and knackered.) i think the doctor says something about him being able to cross dimensions but can no longer in the age of steel 2 parter in season 2.This suggests one race of timelords guarding all time and dimensions so there would be no alternate doctors or masters.

No, he's never really been able to travel between dimensions. It's happened accidentally a few times (Inferno, Rise of the Cybermen, etc.) but never deliberately that I can recall.

I assume, given Tennant has been seen filming the Cyberman Xmas special around Wales, also this years xmas show features copper cybermen, where they tied in by Harriet Jones Mr Copper-man foundation?, I totally loved last weeks episode, I cannot imagine who would not have, it was funny, exciting, scary and tense plus the stakes just kept getting ramped up, it felt like a whole show of opening teasers, I half expected the credits top keep replaying during the show, I love what RTD is doing with Donna's character and love or hate Martha Donna is a much better actor that Freema, loved the mental Dalek Khan and the Davros was as requested a exact copy of the one that came before, so that should have pleased a lot of people, roll on Saturday.

The Doctors Most Faithful Companion
by TheTaf

The episode mentioned the end or the destruction (can’t really remember now) of the Doctors Most Faithful Companion. Who do you think its referring too?? Donna: don’t think so, although she may die in the next episode. Martha: again don’t think so. Rose: Perhaps, but I don’t think they'd bring her back just to kill her off. Sarah Jane: Maybe they could kill her off but not likely. The Tardis: now that’s what my money is on, defiantly the doctor’s most faithful companion!! And this photo backs that theory up (sorta it also gives weight to Donna dying) http://tiny.cc/vVrVZ I also think this will lead the doctor to use what I’ve bin calling the "HäagenDazs" Key. Which I think will reset time by 24 hours or something. And while I’m spouting out some theories, here's another. The doctor will regenerate and change appearance but change back again once the "HäagenDazs" Key has been used. Since the regeneration thing is so unpredictable he's never gna change into the same person twice, so they could get someone really famous in as the new doc, because it’s a one off. That would be so cool!! Someone like Hugh Laurie (how id love that) or Clive Owen or while I’m wishing Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt maybe even George Clooney!! Most likely some big British star (PLEASE GOD NOT HUGH GRANT)

RE: Donna as Time Lady, River Song and Phone number
by Steve Rogers
Jul 2nd, 2008

Sorry, I don't believe Donna is a Time Lady. To quote the name as justification would have to mean that RTD planned this right from the Runaway Bride, and how would he know then that he would get Tate for a full series later on down the line? I also hope this doesn't happen as having a load of Time Lords around again would make the Doctor a bit less special and lessen the "lonely angel" aspect of his character. River Song and "end of the universe" - as Bytor says, this is in all probablity a throwaway line and people are reading WAY too much into it. How many times in the history of the show has the Doctor announced of some cataclysmic threat that it could mean "the end of the universe!"? About 700, I bet. The Doctor's phone number - all phone numbers used on TV in the UK that are clearly visible have to be "cleared" - ie. submitted to the regulator and cleared as not being actually in use - before being shown on the telly. We don't use the 555 trick but any number actually visible on TV cannot be an actual person's phone number that could be called up by a viewer.

I know RTD likes to seed clues, but let us not confuse that tendency with the sort of throwaway stuff that inhabits nearly all Doctor Who stories.

Lost Jarv: no, how could it be K-9? He left the Doctor once to stay with Leela, and again to stay with Romana. Call that faithful? Cos I don't. :)

I would be pretty clever if the "your song is coming to an end" line was a foreshadowing of the end of River Song rather than of the Doctor, though I'm not sure I'd give the writers that much credit!

The doctor has been to the end of the universe before at the end of season 3 where he finds the master. so river song probably has been there with him but could be anytime so i think its a throw away line. Also the tochlaphaine(typo)in season 3 tell of the darkness coming until the master saved them.could that be relevant? or are we all speculating on every little bit of dialogue we can find?
