I hated ST:Generations, loved First Contact, Insurrection was ok, and was dissapointed with Nemesis. JJ is treading on dangerous ground, and I am sure he knows that, so he must take great care with how he handles this. It is either gonna be great, or will just utterly destroy Trek as we know it. I hope it's gonna be great. The characters are the key, and it is not so much that they look like the characters, they MUST act like the characters we know and love, that is the key to this movie being great or sucking bad.
PS Cloverfield blowjobs again Harry?

That's the kind of thing that's got me interested in this reboot. A realistic look at humanities first steps into the galaxy. I'm not a big fan of any of the older Star Trek stuff but if JJ can capture the wonder of exploring space then he'll easily make over $400 million.

No. Didn't see Klingons. Aren't we supposed to see Romulans? That was the rumor according to Moriarty. But I didn't read that cuz Drew posts massive spoilers and I was concerned. But I thought Romulans were the bad guys. Ultimately - we know the main baddie is Eric Bana though - and no - I didn't see any of that. And I got zero sense of plot or story. Just a sense of scale and tone. But that got me curious.

Can you say anything more about the actors? Even if they're not there yet in this scene, do they all "fit" in your mind's eye into their eventual roles? Or does anyone seem like a bad cast, from the bit you saw?

Honestly - what I saw was a quick scene with little vignettes of character flourishes. Everything in motion - but each character beat felt in tune with what we know. My two greatest concerns cast wise were Cho and Pine prior to seeing them - and Pine was quite good and Cho - looked very appropriate sitting at his station on the Enterprise in a classic Trek uniform. He had, I think - one line delivered in a serious tone - and I thought SULU. So that worked. There wasn't anything that felt wrong in the least, but it was strange... cuz it all looked big. The Enterprise looks huge, both on the outside and on the inside. Not spacey, but it felt like if you had to walk the length of the enterprise you'd hope there were a couple of bench spots to rest.

RULED. i can't believe you'd write it off so easily, harry. in my opinion, that was the pinnacle of star trek TV series. by the time that wrapped up, i cared about every single major character, knew all the arcs for each one... i was devastated when that series ended. TNG had some incredible, beautiful moments and inspired storytelling, but the series overall didn't pack nearly the punch that DS9 did. just my 2 bars of latinum.

Too bad he didn't give you a photo of, well, ANYTHING that you could post here, but thanks for this nonetheless. When you say classic trek uniforms, do you mean the original series or the uniforms that were introduced in Wrath of Khan? Apply that same question to the bridge, a redesign but same aesthetics of TOS Enterprise or a variation of what we saw in the film series?

I wonder how long it will take the growing world of bloggers and internet 'journalists' to realize that Hollywood (much like politics) has finally figured out a way to extract free advertising and generate enthusiasm on paltry budgets?

Not that I mind these 'guided tours' of the non-professionals, but anyone who's ever worked for or a near a blog or second/third-tier website during the past ten+ years knows the difference between a good review and a BLAZINGLY AWESOME FUCKING YEAH-YO!!! piece can be settled with a few phone calls and a XXL t-shirt.

Good stuff can and does come from this brave new world, but sometimes I long for a period in which the crisscrosses of friends, associates, those 'in the know' and personal relationships that go way past formal aren't the impetus of the business. Read Harry's review of Hellyboy 2 and you'll see what I mean... how many times does he mention del Toro's name? Can we forget the relationship these two have? Shouldn't Harry exclude himself, - in all fairness - from having an official say about that? When did it become OK for someone to claim they're a journalist, receive the swaggy perks of one, yet not follow the basic tenets of being one?

I read a quote for an upcoming videogame the other day (I swear) that quoted a talkbacker from a news story the site did. A TALKBACKER... are they the new WKRQ Radio in Mississippi now?

Anyway, as a fan of the original and Next Generation shows and 'most' of the movies, I can see why they'd want to re-boot this, but can't possibly see this working. Every single time I watch Boston Legal and see the Shat in action, I can't help but feel his entire career vindicated by his sheer awesomness as Denny Crane. The man's a treasure, and despite putting the latest hot thing in Starfleet tights and calling him Kirk, I think even a public who gave up on Trek long ago can see through that.

I want this to be good - hell, I want everything I'm paying for to be good - but inside there's a sick little feeling that I can't ignore, like finding out the girl of your dreams is really your long, lost sister. I saw that happen in an episode of Nip/Tuck, which is usually 99% original. Something I wish this Trek could have been.

I have an associate who has worked behind the scenes on this film and he tells me that William Shatner is indeed involved in the production, but not to the extent that Nimoy is. Abrams, Burk, Kurtzman and Shatner met prior to the film and decided they would pull the wool over the fans eyes until the last possible minute.....a sort of reverse viral marketing.....but rest assured, despite his rantings, Shatner is in this film.

The other spoiler......so is Patrick Stweart as Picard in a cameo.

And fans will finally get some closure to the original big three......including DeForest Kelley's McCoy, though I'm not privy to how they accomplish this.

It's no one's favorite film, but I've always been fond of it. And it really was one final grand opportunity to see the old crew in action. And I got really nostalgic, and very sad at how many of them have died off already. Lord, Deforest Kelly really is gone from this world, isn't he? That's fucking sad. And it made me scared as hell for this reboot. How the fuck can you recast the original crew? Who, in this day and age, can truly call upon the pure Ham necessary for kirk? Who can recapture the cranky yet witty and charming McCoy? and HOW THE HELL CAN YOU RECAST SPOCK!?!? I mean, I hope this thing is watchable, And I'd to cry STINO!!! but, I dunno...

Roddenberry created Star Trek to be a Utopian view of what mankind can achieve in the future. The studio hated that and wanted fist fights, shoot-outs and women so he had to compromise his TV show to deliver something closer to a western in space, He hated that compromise which is why when they asked him to do TNG he agreed on the condition he gets to tell the stories his way, no weekly fist fight, no monster of the week, no babe of the week and no races entirely presented as evil beings the way the Klingons were short-changed. TNG took 3 years to find its feet but from season three to season 5, THAT was the vision of Gene Roddenberry at its finest and everything after that is simply a show using the name of Star Trek to further its own needs for the studio once again. Pretty much like this film will be with its ridiculous fan boy casting of Simon Pegg as Scotty. Ridiculous!

I don't mean to be a dick, but you've got to be kidding me. You realize that none of the movies released this summer have made that much money so far. It saddens me to say this, but sci-fi just doesn't has the same pull that it used to. I'd be surprised if this makes 200 million. And if it does, I would consider that to be a huge success for a Star Trek movie. I think you know your numbers better than that, Harry.

When I visited, it was a friendly visit and I wasn't supposed to write anything, he told me that later this year when he had something more tangible to show - he'd invite me back to show me more. BUT - apparently somewhere along the way JJ decided he wanted to see what I'd write, if I did write. Problem was for me - I didn't really see that much and what I did see was weeks ago.... and I've seen a lot of other stuff in the meanwhile. So for the past week I've been working up the report - thinking about it - talking with Yoko about what she remembered as well and finished up the report today. --- I'm dying to write about WOLFMAN but I'm on embargo on that till - I don't know when. But I've got interviews with Benicio, Hugo Weaving, Emily Blunt, Rick Baker, Joe Johnston, the production designer and much more. Luckily that's all audio files that I'm having my intern transcribe - so there will be no loss of info due to memory issues.

You saw Mission Impossible III, you've seen LOST, and if you were smart you enjoyed Cloverfield for what what it was, and didn't hate it for what it wasn't - it wasn't an ordinary disaster film, it was an exceptional, immersing one. JJ Abrams is talented and ambitious, Michael Giacchino is the next big film composer, and there's no reason for people to start moaning and groaning like this project is doomed to fail or to even be mediocre. I've been a huge Star Trek fan since I was a kid, and I have no doubt JJ Abrams is able to understand what Roddenberry intended Star Trek to be. I'm soooo pissed this film got pushed to May. The teaser trailer is perfect. I almost don't want to see anything else before then. But if that were really true, I would never visit this site. I'm as hopelessly addicted as the rest of you..

"Roddenberry created STAR TREK to be a Western in Space." I thought that was how GENE RODDENBERRY sold the idea to the TV network SUITS. I think WAGON TRAIN was big at the time. STAR TREK as a WAGON TRAIN in space was his ploy. I think he really had a GRANDER VISION than WT. I like STAR TREK: ORIGINAL and the rest no so much. The first movie I always call THE HUNT FOR V'GER.

or Nicholas Meyer. Star Trek is all about going forwards, not backwards. And recasting Kirk and co is just stupid. They should have got an entirely new crew, set it post-TNG and on a ship called the Enterprise. Boy, Berman really screwed Trek. If I was Roddenberry's son i'd have a hit on Berman and co organised.

Please don't let this film be a stinking floater. I've really enjoyed Trek since the early 70's and having grown up in a sense with Kirk Spock and McCoy, it would be a lot of fun to sort of revisit those three and have some more adventures. It's the kind of thing that makes me feel like a kid again, the hope that this will be cool and the public at large will agree. He did however try and sneak onto the Paramount lot by dressing up as Catwoman...but one of the security guys tazered him and he woke up in a cage in some vetinary clinic. Problem was the effects of the electric shock meant he was unable to talk, so the vets mistook him for a real cat and neutered him...ouch! of course, I didn't believe a word he said, because he was very, very drunk.

I agree, Abrams is nowhere near as talented as Wise or Meyer and rebooting with this mutant half-canon story is just a bad idea. A new crew and a new ship set much farther into the future is what I wanted to see as well.

Paramount pulled out of Comic Con - Fuck them
by Hanny44

05:21:39 AM
They decided not to come to San Diego because they have a built in audiences for their upcoming releases like Transformers 2, Star Trek, and Gi Joe. I think JJ is making a huge mistake not coming to the Con.....there are plenty of trekkies out there but are they that confident that recasting a beloved crew will go over so well? JJ needs to get people excited and that starts at the con. Then there is GI Joe directed by Stephen "The Mummy" Sommers. Another sure fire hit? Again...i'd be surprised if this movie was any good. Besides some released photos how could I possibly get excited for a Stepehen Sommers directed movie? Paramount should be concentrating on getting people pumped up at the con instead of being blatantly over confident. Since they pulled out of the con, I may have to pull out of their 2009 movie slate.

Trying to do for Trek what the BSG remake did for the original? The difference being there have been a lot of new Trek series and movies over the years and it'll have to compete with all of them whereas nothing stood in BSG's way of acceptance.

I think it isn't stated enough how good an actor he was, because he made it look so easy. I saw the first episode of TNG for the first time in quite a while and watched his cameo with Data. That scene was so full of life and fun and it was all because of him; he owned that scene handsdown. Even now that TNG and Data are so established and well-known, that feeling still hasn't changed.

I'm not getting how the whole ship is outfitted and manned. There was no crew before this one? A cadet becomes a Captain without even qualification tours on another hull? The doctor, the comm officer, the first officer, and the CO all go to school together? I have no idea how this is supposed to work. It's like no one's ever heard of, oh, I don't know, the Navy! Or reality! Now I can see Kirk passing back through Starfleet academy for a command course or something, but not as a cadet - how about as a Commander or Lieutenant Commander? Then there would be a reason for them all to be leaving SFA together. Anyone have any clue on how they are justifying the scene as Harry saw it?

First of all, not to sound overly geeky, but Kirk got a commendation for "original" thinking not "creative." Secondly, I agree that Nemesis is not as great as a lot of the other films in the franchise, but it totally kicks Insurrection's ASS! Insurrection was easily, hands down the worst film in the franchise since Star Trek V. Anyway, with that being said, I honestly don't know what to think about Harry's report. Besides a finished scene and visual effects, it sounded to me like there was still something missing. I hope I am wrong, because I am a Die Hard Trekkie and am not afraid to admit it. With a movie of this caliber though, with so much potential, AND on top of that having to reinvigorate the fan base while creating new fans, I expected Harry would have seen something more that would confirm that the above expectations have been met. Hopefully with the year or so they still have before the film's release that it will be perfected. I am confident with Abrams, I have enjoyed a lot of what he's been affiliated with, I just hope he surprises me yet again with a good, solid Star Trek film.
Great Report Harry.

I wish you had seen some more details about the characters and plot, but this is at least promising. I, too was never able to get into DS9, Voyager, or Enterprise. They all felt watered down to me. The chemistry wasn't there, which is completely necessary for Trek to work. Each one of those Trek incarnations had characters that just bugged me. They may have worked for others, but not me... sorry.

I can't wait to see some of this footage, and was surprised Paramount pulled out of ComicCon this year. There is such a big question mark over the heads of ST fans over this movie. Now is the time for Paramount to release something that settles, and excites the fans at the same time.

Insurrection v. Nemesis

Granted both are terrible, terrible films, but I have to go with Insurrection over Nemesis. Insurrection started to give us a philosophical question about the good of the many and all that before it turned into cinematic vomit. I also think the characters were given a chance to display some humor and fun, even if most of it was cheesy. Nemesis was humorless and devoid of fun. They also killed off Data, even though he appears in the future during the final episode of TNG, which I know is a pedantic complaint, but it annoyed me. Anything JJ comes up with will be better than either film. I don't know why it was so hard to make good Trek films. They have a less than fifty percent batting average.

I still pick Nemesis over Insurrection. Nemesis is far from II, IV, or VI, but it is better than Insurrection. With Insurrection, I can see the underlying theme about the morality of killing 300 people to save 3 million, but I can't get past, nor can I forgive Picard, Worf, and Data singing Gilbert & Sullivan during the shittiest CG shuttle chase sequence, nor can I forgive them cutting half of the Enterprise battle, we see them engage the enemy, and then cut back to the planet, cut back to the fight and the engines are venting their coolant. Also, and I am not trying to pick a fight, but they killed off Data in Nemesis really is not a valid argument for saying Insurrection is better, simply because they explained at the end of the TNG finale that Picard told the crew what he saw in the future as a way of indicating that the future hadn't been written yet, hence why we saw an Enterprise-D with 3 nacelles in the finale, but in Generations the Enterprise-D was destroyed, so the future that Picard saw, was not the actual future that was going to unfold.

However, the larger point is that Data's death had no gravitas. If you're going to kill off a main character make it memorable. The fact that they shoehorned Data's retarded brother into the plot cheapened the death as well because you know they were planning on somehow bringing him back in a sequel. Besides, Nemesis was an even number film, so it wasn't supposed to suck. I haven't seen either film since their theatrical release, so maybe I'm forgetting some of the worst atrocities of Insurrection (I almost forgot about the Gilbert & Sullivan). It seems to me that Insurrection was a lame attempt at making a TNG version of Trek IV.

The problem with Star Trek
by mraig
Jun 27th, 2008
09:42:34 AM
I have always been amazed that the Star Trek franchise has been around for 40 years, has created probably 700 or so hours of material, has reached the point where many are saying it has "run its course" or that they have told pretty much every conceivable story they have to tell, and yet, if you really think about it, they have barely scratched the surface in terms of stories to tell.

Everybody always talks about the 'Star Trek cliches'--the fact that there have been so many episodes of Star Trek that they end up telling the same stories over and over again: they come to a planet of aliens that seem benevolent, but actually they're BLANK or they get captured by a transcendental being who tests them, and so on and so forth. The implication is that they have run out of story possibilities, and anything they could come up with is just going to be something we've already seen repackaged or spun a little differently.

But what I don't understand is why they take this universe that they've spent 40 years creating, in which 150-300 years in the future the human race has made all this progress, internally and externally, has ventured out into space and begun interacting with other beings, and yet the only part of this world that they show us is one tiny little bit: what it's like to be in the military/scientific exploration organization called Starfleet.

It would be like if the 1960s were something that you had made up in your head, and you decided to create a series of TV shows and movies about them that spanned hundreds of hours, and you set the whole thing on four submarines and an aircraft carrier. Sure, you would run out of stories about things that can happen on a military vessel, but you wouldn't have even scratched the surface of possible stories to tell about this world!

We've heard again and again that the human race has gotten rid of crime and poverty, and that their society has one world government, no religion, and no money. Fucking show me that! That's a fascinating concept--the human race achieving peace and perfection. What would it work like? What would life be like for normal people in it? If there's no money, what do people do with their time? What's to stop everyone from being fat and lazy and unmotivated?

Is there really no crime? If there's no money, I guess there might not be theft, but what about rape and murder and adultery and assault? Do those exist? If so, how are they dealt with? If not, what is preventing them?

How does the government work? Are there political parties? Are there different philosophies about what is the best way to govern? Is there still the tension between ensuring equality and ensuring freedom? If so, what forum is this debate carried out in?

Is there really no religion? If not, what happens when individual people have spiritual or religious feelings that they feel the need to express--are they prevented from doing this? And if there is religion, how do members of different sects manage to get along with each other?

Do people still recognize the division of the world into different countries? What role does nationality play in people's lives? Does government work at a local level too, or just at the global level? How about race and ethnicity? Do people still recognize themselves as members of different races? Are there still racial tensions?

And that's all just internal--that doesn't take into account the role that aliens would play in everyday life, or the relation between earth and colonies of humans living on other worlds. But my point is that there are so many areas of the Star Trek universe that could be explored in an intellectually interesting way that don't involve warp drives or phasers or shields being down to 23 percent.

Why can't we have a "Star Trek" show whose plot is about the founding of a colony on another planet, and whose main character is the person assigned to be the governor of that planet? Or a show that takes place on earth: in a hospital, in a school, in a factory, in an engineering firm? Or just follow the life of a simple family that lives in one of the 22nd-24th century worlds that we've seen from the point of view of a ship? Or if you want the show to take place in space, why not on a cargo ship? Why not on a pleasure cruiser?

The people who say that Star Trek has run its course and that there are no more stories to tell aren't using their imaginations.

in that Nemesis could have added more depth and gravitas to Data's death, then just letting it happen. And Data's retarded brother was just a cheap excuse for having Brent Spiner be in the next film if they were going to make another one, which thank god they're not and finally put the TNG cast to pasture. Despite knowing in his first scene exactly what Data's "brother" was in the film for, I ended up really enjoying Nemesis up to the last 10 minutes, after the final fight it all went downhill and in a similar fashion to the Gilbert & Sullivan we have a character singing "Blue Skies," which was just as shudder inducing. I think we can safely agree that they were both campy, cheesy, flawed films.

Star Trek has often been a load of gash and the term 'Trekkies' is synonymous with the stereotypical spotty freakish-looking Halo-playing fatboy virgin losers that so accurately describes most of you guys (I don't play Halo, so obviously am better than all of you). The odd episode here and there, Trek hasn't been any good since the end of DS9, which is only so widely-acclaimed because it compared favourably to the pieces of shit Voyager and Enterprise and the tired final seasons of TNG. That and it actually had, you know, storylines that lasted longer than an episode. But my point is, how can this version of Trek really be inferior to Trek as we already know it? the perfect to utopia of the ST universe doesn't make sense. They can't even get it staright whether they have money or not. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. There's no war on earth but there's war all over the rest of the galaxy. There's not racism but Bones basically calls Spock a half breed n---ger all the time.

If you were JJ, that would be the perfect way to "Suck Satan's Cock" and genuflect to Spielberg AND Lucas at the same time: Bring Irina back as this lightsaber wielding Jedi in the Star Trek universe. Have Spielberg direct. Grand Unification Theory of the Franchises. It works on so many levels. There's a reason why Irina's conscience was allowed to go into another dimension at the end of Indy IV. The character is too good to kill off permanently, and you can make her transition to an SF character. But first, JJ has to genuflect to the Great Spielberg and the Almighty Lucas. Nyuk, nyuk.

Nemesis v Insurrection
by newc0253
Jun 27th, 2008
11:26:56 AM
Insurrection sucked because the entire dramatic conflict was such a fucking sham: happy peace-loving aliens sitting on the fountain of youth vs greedy old aliens trying to exploit it. Everyone knows that loving peace is GOOD and greedy exploitation is BAD but does it occur to anyone on the Enterprise that the peace-loving aliens sitting selfishly on the fountain of youth might be a little greedy themselves, when the entire galaxy might benefit from their fountain of youth?

Nemesis's problems were different: in principle, a potential war between the Romulans and the Federation should have been a great setting for drama. But it was hard to give a rat's ass about the villain and Logan's script was deeply overrated, the set-up for Data's death was just trite.

it's a draw they both suck.

I can't actually believe I wrote those words, I just threw up in my mouth a little. But, BUT, over the course of last year, I had the Star Trek marathon to end all. I watched EVERYTHING, in chronological order no less. (That actually made for some really cool back-and-forth w/ TNG and DS9 for a bit, then later w/ DS9 and VOY, but I digress.) I didn't really want to watch Voyager, but I did. I watched all 7 seasons, about 50% of which was new to me. I tried watching when it was first on, but I lost interest around the 3rd season. Occassionally I'd catch an ep afterward but it just wasn't good. The characters were annoying, the stories excessively outlandish, and the resolutions were mostly the same ("we can get out of this if we [insert technobabble here]") So I watch them anew and the stuff I'd seen previously was the same, just not good. After about the halfway mark though I found I was actually getting invested in it. Sure some of the characters still grated me, but it became more like the cousins from the branch of the family that you get along with but just wonder what the hell is wrong with them. By the end I had a new appreciation for it. Don't get me wrong, it's still the weakest of the lot, but it definitely has some good Trek moments from time to time. Ok, I know it's coming, flame on.
Trek Shows

I liked the original series quite abit but I can't say I loved it with a passion. I was totally against the Next Generation and didn't watch it until mid second season and then I was hooked and was a loyal 'must see this when it's first on' viewer.. I tried to warm up to Deep Space Nine but I missed a few episodes and then realized that the show heavily depended on following each episode so I dropped it. Someday I'd like to watch the entire series in a clump (I've heard it holds up extremely well). I thought Voyager had the best promos but the episodes always felt rushed and flat to me and I gave up. I really wanted to like Entertprise since I liked Scott Bakula on QL.. .but I got annoyed that they were playing around with established time lines and besides that it felt not enough like Star Trek when they were in the grungy ship and too much like some other show when they'd pop into some distant future situation.

Were cold blooded killers of tng movie franchise. Insurrection was a waste of money and time and the plot was bland as hell. It would only just barely make a decent episode. I think even Levar Burton said that they didn't make a good one after First Contact which was a fantastic movie. It was one of the few that had memorable lines and scenes in. What memorable scenes were in Insurrections? Beverly and Deanna talking about their boobs? Worf getting a zit?

Someone mentioned in another post the possibilty of Data being beamed off the exploding ship in "NEMESIS" by the nearby Romulans after Data fired his phaser. That would have to be some really quick timing… but not a bad idea. If the Romulans were tracking the ship long enough for it’s shields to go down, it might have been possible.... I remember one episode of TNG where the Romulan Defector tells Data that he knows a whole army of scientists that would love to get their hands on him to study him. Data says that he does not enjoy the thought of that, and the Romulan tells him “as well you shouldn’t.” So just imagine if they did get their hands on him. One quick way to rid themselves of their need of the Remans (slave-aliens introduced in NEMESIS, who turn on the Romulans…) Kill all the Remans and create androids to do all the dirty work that the Remans once did. Of course, the androids would have to turn on their Romulan creators ala Cylons. Perhaps Data would be responsible for that. That would make an amazing TNG film!

I never realized that TPM made more than Khan...the way people talk about the first two, it makes it sound like the first was a huge bomb and the second saved the series. When it turns out that they both did well, but the studio had higher expectations for the first based on budget. I'll have to watch the first one, I don't think I ever got around to seeing it.

I feel the same way. While i like starfleet and the action oriented stories you can get from a basis in the military, i would LOVE to see another side to the ST universe. And for the guy who said "Watch BSG": Ok, that's how they do it in that universe, i want to see how they do it in the trek universe. you could have just as easily said "Watch Bab5", which is a great show, but isn't the other side of trek. I want a bab5/BSG realism brought to the trek 'verse.

The biggest mistake ever made by the TNG movies was that they never used Q in a feature. Like Star Trek 4, Q would have brought in a lot of "on the fence" Trek fans because everyone loves Q. He always brought fun and a sence of humor to the series. If they ever make a 'final' TNG film, it should be a Q-centric film.

is that the number of Trek fans has diminished considerably since the days of TNG. I dropped out a couple of years into Voyager and judging by the short run of Enterprise I think plenty of people did the same. They need to create new fans or the series is dead. I like Trek, but I can see the appeal of just letting it be instead of trying to breath new life into it.

Where do studios get off sinking $150-$200 million into every movie they produce?? God quality can be made with less than a stratospheric budget, then the studios have the balls to complain because their bloated budget movie didn't rake in $400-$500 million. Cut the budgets and demand quality, then you can consider raising budgets. I guess Paramount should give the Beavis and Butthead movie a $200 million dollar budget huh?

As Shatner & Nimoy point out in their respective autobiographies/memoirs/Trek-t rivia books, Trek was meant - MEANT - to be Horatio Hornblower/WagonTrain in space... Roddenberry had all the lovey-dovey humanistic shit in there too, but that was how he pitched it... and that's what we got. Hadn't heard Karl Urban was playing Bones, I like. Fucking Simon Pegg, however, will be a dirty poo stain on the otherwise *okay* cast. Sure, he can make funny films, act a little, but fuck, man. If they really wanted a ginger, they should've got someone like Damian Lewis (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm05 07073/) to do it. If not him, then at least someone who isn't... funny. And who can act in serious films.

Oh and BTW, Blade Runner, AWESOME movie, that one I did see in the theaters when it came out, and it still holds up to this day. Reboots
by DennisMM
Jun 27th, 2008
05:13:56 PM
Abrams is not doing a prequel. He's doing a reboot. We know that Kirk served on at least three ships before Enterprise, because he started as an ensign - as do all academy graduates. He was on his second assignment when the vampire cloud attacked, killing many crew members and leading Kirk to develop an "Obsession" with destroying it. He then commanded a ship lower in the food chain than the Constellation-class Enterprise. The Enterprise had a different chief medic when Kirk signed on, as we saw in "Where No Man Has Gone Before." It's semi-canon that McCoy didn't even join Starfleet until shortly before he was posted to the Enterprise. As was noted above, it's damned unlikely all these characters would have their first postings on such a prestigious ship. But I'm a Trek geek (retired), so what do I know?

Kay, imagine a movie where you start at the end (or near the end), and one character is reacting and talking to someone off screen, THEN you see that one character remember everything that happens and thus, we see the "movie." Now combine that with time travel. Then have something in the story "change" time... then we see go back to the "present" and see that the main character is talking to someone who is supposed to be dead... sounds like LOST? Ummm.... yeah... and it's also a lot like the story structure Mr. Abrams like A LOT... and it just may be the structure of the new Star Trek. Hmm.

The most successful of all Star Trek movies made $109 million domestic. Most of them grossed in the mid-70 million range. There is no way in hell this new movie is going to break even. Even if its the best movie of all time, there is just a limited audience for Star Trek - and I don't think there's any reason to expect this is going to be the best movie of all time, or even the best Star Trek movie of all time. Its going to flop.

I never even liked Trek but I like JJ and might check it out, or take my dad who is a Trekkie. But your right, it's going to be VERY tough to pull in a large audience. They need to convince the older crowd that even with a completely new cast, it's still Trek, and need to convince the young crowd that Trek can be hip and cool...tough.

Although, like most franchises as Hollywood is learning, if you have no entries in it for a long time, people will pour their wallets out to see a reboot/decade later sequel with updated technology.

Looking at Hollywood accounting, one has to remember Yogurt in Spaceballs.... "merchandising, merchandising!" If you look at the new movie as a stand-alone movie, you may be right (getting people interested in Trek again is definitely a challenge). If you look at it as a way to jump-start a 40-year-old franchise and then flood the market with new releases of the original series, new products, new tie-ins, a potential new series... well, you can amortize the cost of the new movie for a long time...
And one more thing...
by ckane123
Jun 27th, 2008
07:56:17 PM
Speed Racer has "flopped" because the merchandising hasn't sold very well (unless it's clearance priced, which has started and people think "Hey! Cheap birthday gift for little Timmy's cousin/classmate/friend") and the box office disappointed out of the gate. Iron Man is a hit because everybody is happy - the merchandise is selling out, the studio is flush with cash, and the theatre owners got consistent ticket revenue weeks past the initial release - basically, legs). If the ancillaries do well (and trust me, I'll be snapping up LOTS of tie ins for new Trek, as will a lot of fans) and the movie is not DOA Hollywood will say it's a "hit".
How much will it make it's opening weekend?
by ckane123
Jun 27th, 2008
08:02:01 PM
I bet they are hoping for Iron Man-like numbers - $80 to 100 million first weekend - and if it opens with less than 50 million on May 8th, they'll be some wailing and gnashing of teeth. Thing is, there is NOTHING else being released that weekend, and the only holdovers will be Wolverine and (shudder) The Hannah Montana movie, that open May 1st. Wolverine may bite into Trek's sales if it's REALLY good, but Hannah is gonna have a huge drop and really - it's not the same audience (duh). If another studio moves up a release to go against nuTrek, THEN we may have an interesting situation (especially if it's a SF flick, like Terminator 4 or Nowhereland). That may mean some studio heads smell blood in the water.

HEADGEEK is allowed to emote in an article after an editing room visit to witness the attempted rebirth of one of the biggest franchises in history.

In other words, this WAS a write up based on a cordial visit, as opposed to a full movie review from HeadGeek as film critic -- which I am looking forward to since the visit to JJ's editing suite has built up the excitement level. Now the question is will it backfire on this TREK effort or will it be the jumping off point for a positive review from Harry if the finished work is deserving? We'll see.

I have been a Star Trek fan my entire life. My Mom and Dad saw the pilot at a Sci-Fi Convention in Cleveland in the 60's, watched the whole run of the show, had the Reruns on when it was in syndication when I was a baby and we watched it every Saturday night, before Space:1999 on WUAB, Channel 43 out of Lorain/Cleveland. I fell in love with Star Wars when it came out in 1977, but it was Star Trek every Saturday that kept me a Science Fiction geek, and kept me on course.

In 1979, we saw Star Trek: The Motion Picture in the theater and I loved it, even if it was paced slowly--the visuals and the music, along with seeing my Saturday Night Friends on the big screen was fantastic. It wasn't until 1982 that I saw the real power of those characters, when we all suffered through the death of Spock the day before my ninth birthday. That was the greatest movie summer of my entire life, with lots of amazing films to explore...and Star Trek II was the film we saw over and over that year.

Over the years, I watched every Star Trek movie, every tv show, and read many books and comics involving the characters. I still had my love affair for Star Wars, which has since lead me to become an illustrator and designer on many Star Wars products--but my love of Star Trek never felt like cheating...I was just in an open relationship with many franchises.

Well, last year was the Star Wars Celebration IV in LA and I got to be one of the artists in attendance. There were about 50 of us, with various levels of experience and exposure and we were all having a great time. The great John Alvin, the movie poster artist who passed away earlier this year was there and enjoying his position as "dean" of the other artists and had a number of small, kind conversations with me throughout the show. Drew Struzan was there, not in the show but mulling about saying hello to everyone.

And into this scene walked JJ Abrams and two of his children, Henry and Gracie. It was awesome--he was just a dad bringing his kids to a Star Wars show, trying to pass on his love of Sci-Fi to the next generation. I shook his hand and introduced myself and his son Henry got all excited by the poster I had made for the show, asking if he could put it up on his wall. JJ shot me a look--two Geeks enjoying the next generation at the ages we were when we fell in love with all this stuff--and he asked "How Much?" I told him in no certain terms that his money was no good and gave him the poster and I think a couple prints, and a card so he could see more stuff on the website...and we talked a little more. I told him how excited (and a little nervous) I was about his new Star Trek--about how it was if not my first love it was a very close second. He said he was as excited as I was and a fan to boot--and he would try not to let down another Jeff--as he is Jeffery Jacob...

It was neat. He seemed like a cool guy, took my business card and after shaking hands with Henry, My buddy Tommy Lee Edwards took my photo with JJ and vice versa. JJ gave me a handshake, talked to Tommy and kept on moving down the line. Smiles all around. If this is the guy who makes the movie, I have a feeling it will be a good one. A Star Trek movie made by a geek who loves Star Trek and Star Wars, who wants to pass on Geekdom to his kids, and has a bit of talent in the story department. Hopefully he will iron out any problems in the WONDER TWIN's script (I refuse to think that saying that they wrote Transformers is any kind of endorsement) and make a great movie.

Is it dangerous to reboot a great franchise with many years under it's belt? Yes. Has there ever been a really successful attempt at this, other than arguably Battlestar Galactica? Not really. Am I won over by the guy for liking my stuff? Possibly...but I am hopeful that he has the chops. And if I am wrong, it is not like the franchise could be any deader than it is now. I will reserve my ire for the project until I see what they have done to the Enterprise and until I hear more about the project--from what Harry says, it sounds like this film will use the Time-Travel story to explore the history of Star Trek to expand and re-launch the franchise. It will be both a sequel and a Re-boot. We won't know if it is good until opening day--but we will be there.

The chemistry between the characters of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy, along with the chemistry between actors is what made the original great. Spock was just cool, and Nimoy played him perfectly. Vulcans kicked ass. So what do they do in Next Generation? Leave Vulcans out completely, and replace him with a geeky android? And what was up with that Riker dude? I like the Abram idea because the original Star Trek had the most interesting storyline and mix of characters. The problem is, can you find a cast to live up to the old one? Good luck.

The interesting thing about our modern age (and it is exemplified on AICN) is that people confuse their opinion for reality. I do it, almost everyone does it, so- if you liked Cloverfield , fine. But I'll be damned if I let those best movie of the year comments pass. It may have been your best movie of the year. For the rest of us though, it was a steaming pile of poop. Also, I'm really hoping this project rocks, but I'm scared. You see Abrams strikes me as your typical Hollywood- more flash than substance while pretending to have substance guy. Does that make sense. I could be wrong, he seems like a nice guy, he loved his Grandpa, and my favorite scene in Jaws is his too. But still, he's so smarmy.

If there is one thing this talkback proved, it's that people are unsure of this Star Trek movie and JJ has done nothing in his career to really get people excited about it. Maybe it does suck and that's why they pulled out of the con? They want to hide the suckiness of the movie up until it's release date.

Kirk and Spock. I'm not geek enough to know if they attended the academy together for any of their years there, but everyone knows Spock was Pike's first officer or science offcer (depending on if you take the Menagerie pilot as canon) then Kirk got the Enterprise, and Spock was assigned to him. Up until then Kirk's best bud was Gary Mitchell, who got killed in the first episode.

Connery-the Classic-but while Great as Bond, seriously he didnt come across as bright enough to figure things out Lazenby- had the elements, brawn, intellect but the wrong chemistry in the part-maybe if given the chance.... Moore-intellegent, but lacked the muscle needed Dalton-cardboard acting .... Brosnan- well rounded and nearly perfect in the role.... Abrams seem to have put all his chickens in the 'whats in the box' cheap stunts...All those recent projects you list suffer horribly from this typical 'build up with no payoff' droll trickery. That's a lame ass proposition, much less narrative for anyone with a brain...and not particularly suited to Star Trek. Getting any trendy 'dude' in to fit out a franchise might seem to be smart..it can just as easily backfire horribly. I hate his fuckin stinky movies (he hasn't done anything decent in years)..but i sure hope he doesn't shit on the Star Trek memory anymore than that abortive mess Enterprise did... Sure enough, all the hype in the world and palsy walsying with Harry won't save him if he doesn't get this bang on perfect.

I definitely gotta get that Blade Runner Final Cut DVD, sounds incredibly awesome. Oh and I did reply to you in the Transformers thread, so check it if you can. Regarding ST:TMP, I don't like it simply because I see it as an overblown rehash of TOS episode "The Changeling", with a little mysticysim thrown in for good measure. The production itself was good, but I was hoping for a more original story. For me, STII:TWOK stands on its own merits, and doesn't need to be compared with ST:TMP for quality purposes. I will take "The Changeling" episode over ST:TMP anyday. I just felt like it was a bit insulting to the fans that they rehashed an old episode. Sure, you could say that about STII, but that was a continuation of a great story from the series, which to me is better than an overblown, not as good re-telling of an old episode, IMHO.

Yeah, you're dead-on about the relief factor, darker tone etc. And after a spell AOTC diminished in my eyes, especially after III which seriously was a great Star Wars film, it's what we wanted and by we I mean guys who were 6 in 1977. But part of what's great about II is the memory of being happy with it, the association of getting a better sw film than the previous. And I'm finding now that I'm enjoying it more and more as the years go; that is, there are moments in the film when I groan that will always remain but there are plenty more moments that I think are just cool, moody, different angles that still feel star wars in tone ie cool battle in the rain, ground battle at the end etc. The good outweighs the bad. Ep.I has the same effect on me. I was so stoked for it and those feelings carried weight for the movie, that positive feeling became part of the movie itself just like Star Wars feels magical because that's what it felt like when I was a kid. I can't really put it in words, but maybe the simplest way to say it is like certain songs represent a particular time in your life so do movies, even if they're cheesy you associate certain feelings or hopes or memories with them. There are some truly awful movies out there for sure, but the prequels aren't awful, they're just more flawed than the originals. I think alot of people out there refuse to accept a grey area, it's GOT to be black or white. Or maybe people just enjoy bitching. Back to Star Trek and Harry's preview, I think he's simply representing through an official "review" what we all have going on internally, which is hope from a mere glimpse. It's why we read sites like this, we're grups, we're kids at heart who want to feel giddy like we did in 1977 over things that really aren't important in the grand scheme of things.....and anyway part of the moviegoing experience is the hype and buildup.

I was geeking out too, especially at the mention of Captain Pike. Nobody leads a starship like Kirk, but I'm a HUGE fan of THE CAGE (TOS pilot) with the cool, calculating Pike at the helm of the Enterprise. Because he was so laid back, his periodic angry outbursts felt like earthquakes when I first saw it on video back in the day.

Pike certainly seems to be the ideal captain to handle the callous youth of Kirk and other academy grads. His presence should round the edges on the Trek 90210 thing that some TBers are concerned about.

A director in Hollywood has two jobs: make films and finance films. I'm not a huge Abrams fan and I feel he's hit and miss, but I will say that his self-hype serves a purpose. Directors have to market themselves in order to get producers to stand up and pay attention. Hitchcock did the same thing back in the day. He was a great salesman as well as a great director. I'm also sure that Spielberg had more than a little to do with marketing himself as the wunderkind filmmaker of pubescent awe. By all means attack Abram's work, but realize that all of this self-hype is calculated to get films made. Which he's been pretty good at so far.

"Star Trek IV" was great. Best part: where Scotty tries to talk to the computer and the engineer hands him the mouse, so he talks into the mouse. Sure, it had a light-touch, but after they killed Spock and Kirk's son in the two movies preceding it, it was a welcome change of pace. Think of it as the satyr play after the cycle of the first three films.

There's a great probability that you will be one hundred percent correct and it will be 90210 IN SPACE. Still, there's a slim chance that it will not be if Pike is the same captain he was in THE CAGE, where he did not send his crew on missions while he sat on the bridge, but was in the very thick of things, right in the mix.

If he is not out leading things from the center of the fray, but is on the bridge barking orders and directives, then the character won't really be Captain Pike.

One: No Gary Mitchell. This is a gaping, yawning , rectum of a plot hole that JJ has to fill. Mitchell was Kirk's XO on the Ent until he died in WNMHGB. Since there's no sign of this formative character (played in TOS by 2001's Gary Lockwood), methinks JJ is doing the Jar Jar thing and tossing out what he doesn't like. Now there -are- rumors that Stewart and Shatner are being hidden away to pop up as cameo's in the film, but I think they'd be listed as cast members by now were that true. So, regrettably, the Ambercrombie, ghey Trek looks somewhat likely. Women liked Kirk because he was a man's Man. If Pine turns him into a candy ass, his career will never recover. The franchise will die with him, too.

I really don't know about all this, Harry. Your take on how this is better than Trek we've gotten up to now seems kind of like seeing what you want to see to me, and you seem ready to see Trek in this light at this time. I don't disagree about a lot of Trek's recent failings--though I think Enterprise is underrated and DS9 was better than Babylon 5 (yet I loved Babylon 5 too)--but you kind of give even older Trek movies a hard time when the best of it really was Wrath of Kahn, Search for Spock, Voyage Home, and Undiscovered Country. Cheap? I don't think it looked as cheap as you seem to, but I can only hope that others are as "amazed" by what JJ does as you are. I'm not convinced us long-time fans, those of us who watched all the shows and know all the tricks, are going to be as blown away by it though. Give me a Trek fan who feels the only bad Trek was Voyager, and all Next Gen movies outside of First Contact and I'll be more intrigued.

About ST:TMP and other movies

Back in the late 70's, I managed to see Star Wars, and myriad other big movies of the day, but I'm not certain if I saw TMP in the theater. Either way, I'm sure I saw the film in the early cable or HBO years, and certainly ST:II, and the rest in the theater. ST:TMP was a good film in my opinion. Sure there's some Shat-ham moments, but the relationship between the three key actors is there. The supporting actors were also good. ANd, 7th Heaven dad, and the late Persis Khambata(?) were great supporting actors. May have been a little slow in spots, but the effects, and the actors made it truly great. ST:TWOK-Friggin' awesome! There were some over-the-top Shatner and Montalban moments, but that's what made it great. And, I'll put most of those ship model effects up against the too cgi'd look of the Enterprise-U(gly)in the later next gen films any day of the week. Wrath of Khan was practically flawless. ST III:TSFS-This film gets picked on as much as Temple of Doom, but truth be known, I loved it. Not as good as Wrath, and I think I would place it just above TMP, or just under. Either way, I thought it was a solid follow-up to TWOK. ST IV:TVH-I remember mostly liking this one back in the day, but not so much now. Character interactions were still good, and some of the humor was okay. Nowadays, I'm put off by some of the cheesy humor, and the liberal Star Trek writers' need to push some "save the whales" story on us. Don't get me wrong, I'm not about hunting a species to extinction, because to do so would be illogical. hehe But, this is the same sort of crap I'd expect from today's Hollyweird bunch(Iraqi ambassador Sean Penn, Hugo Chavez' friend Danny Glover, or marine biologist Ted Danson, etc.) IV is better than V, but doesn't age well. ST V:TFF-A craptastic movie, with only a few good points. Key character interactions, Sybok was okay-IF he hadn't been Spock's half-brother, and De Kelley's heart-felt moment with his dying father. Otherwise, pretty much shit. ST VI:TUC-Used to like the film a lot. How could you not? It was a vast improvement over V. That said, I was always(and continue to be) put off at how they turned Uhura, and Chekov into a joke. Chekov used to be a joke in TOS, but they made him respectable in ST II. Either way, the film was a mix of good, bad, and mediocre. I'd have to rank them as follows. ST II, ST III, or ST:TMP, then ST:VI, IV, and V. Next Gen films(all of which were never quite as good as the best series eps) ST:FC, ST:Nem, ST:Gen, and ST:Insur. I could drone on and on about the faults of each of the Next Gen films, but I've done enough of that. One last thing, loved ST:TOS despite a cheesier third season. ST:TNG and DS9 are kind of back to back for me. 1st and 2nd seasons of those programs were not as good as the later seasons, but largely delivered the goods. Sometimes, I prefer DS9 actually. Voyager-some good moments(hologram Doc), some shit, and a lot of mediocre. In the end my least favorite, I think. Enterprise-seems like the 1st two seasons were just kind of "meh". Season 3 with the Xindi arc. Pretty good. And, season 4 had a lot of cool shit including the two-part mirror universe eps, among others. There was some merit in that show during the last two years. Oh well. I hope the new movie is good, but we know how things went with the SW prequels, and the Jones film.

I like them all for what they were even the tng ones except the last two.

Sure I have favorites and I recognize some could of been better planned out but in regards to the old series, if you watch them all together for the most part it's just one wonderful flowing saga to me with all its parts.

Maybe it's because they just made so many or maybe I feel that way in regards to the old series movies because I haven't watched them in over 10 years and was a kid then but I think they are all special with memorable lines and moments.

I would rather not say I like one at the expense of the other. Like someone else said. I also wouldn't say I like the old series in the expense of tng or Spock over Data. Haha. That's silly. I know what are my favorites but I still love them both but for different reasons.

I want GREAT Star Trek, not mediocre, not good, not good but flawed, I will accept nothing less than GREAT Star Trek, seeing as there has not been great ST for quite some time. They are recasting iconic characters, and if they are not dead on in their interpretation of these characters, it will not be great. I must walk away from this movie with no doubt that those were the classic characters I know and love. Anything less is unacceptable.

what, do you really want to see somebody doing an inpersonation of Shatner and crew? Come on! Sure it will be hard not to compare this to the orginal, thats why this film is going to be hard for people to swallow, but to be complaining BEFORE you've seen a shot,is insane..What, would rather seen Shatner et all on screen again.... seriously the only 3 of the cast that might possibly work would be Sulu,Chekov and Spock..Sulu as Captain, Spock as an ambassador somewhere, Checkov maybe as crew ?? it comes from the fact that there hasn't been a decent Trek series in almost a decade. Even though Enterprise was a step up from Voyager it still felt as if they were treading water. With all of the cynical nostalgia films being made I can't help but feel that a return to the old characters is the result of another producer looking for an old franchise to raise from the dead. Besides, only half of the Trek movies were any good. I would be more interested in a series that does something new within the Trek universe.

I hope I'm wrong. I love Lost, disliked Cloverfield, and never saw Alias or MI3. Maybe he really understands the series and will bring back some of the fun, excitement and, if we're really lucky, some thoughtful science fiction. So long as the film gets good reviews I'll be in the theater deciding for myself on the end product.

Check out Box Office Mojo. Dollar-wise, Star Trek The Motion Picture is the third biggest money-maker of the series at 82 mil, behind ST4's 109 mil and First Contact's 92 mil. Adjust it for inflation (the website shows you how) and it made 225 mil in today's dollars. Biggest gross of the series. Had the biggest budget, made the most money. The special effects hold up to this day, even if the story lacked a little excitement. Anyone think this new one will do 225 million?

I'm more inclined to think Roddenberry created Trek to make money and score (more) tail; he was canny enough to line up a roster of topnotch writers for the TOS first season, though. The best episode of Star Trek imo is still Forbidden Planet. Seems like most of the coolest "science fiction-y" visuals & gizmo stuff I've seen the past decade or more shows up in action films like Mr & Mrs Smith ETC. If only Superman Returns had taken a cue from the same brainstorm that dropped some of the sequences shown in the Hancock trailer, for example (plot doodoo notwithstanding). Plotwise the template(s) for what the archetypal eps of what ALL Trek is about (for me) were The Menagerie & Journey to Babel. There were some other fair-to-good eps throughout the various franchise incarnations but for the most part you could put the rest of it in the most recent Enterprise refit and blow it up (yet again) and who would really miss it? Abrams can't do any worse, imo, 'cause most of it ain't Trek anyway, despite what the labels say. In my opinion, anyway.

^^ "And you believe wrong, man. Rodenberry truly believed...etc"...No, sorry, met him & some of the writers (& actors) who came to sour on him. And it wasn't Gene who "poured" most of that stuff into ST, it was GL Coon, Fontana, et al. I don't like Eisner either but he sussed out GRod fast enough himself; guess it takes one to know one sometimes. ;)

lol it doesn't really matter M-O-M, Roddenberry's bubble was pricked long before my lil ol' post here today, from the theme song lyric to the IDIC trinket written into one $cript...and beyond. Btw meeting him was no great feat back in the mid 70s, lotsa people did; and not all came away with stars still in their eyes. More power to Abrams if he gets things even somewhat back on course. At this point, though, to me ST is mostly a "what might've been" proposition and I'd just be grateful to see any well-done SF come down the Jeffries Tubes again, if that's still possible. I'm keeping my hailing frequencies open but all in all expectations are rather low. Too many replicated scripts, too much serial cheating on the Kobayashi Maru.

I didn't watch Enterprise during it's prime time run, I downloaded the entire series a few months back and I have to say, Enterprise was some of the best Trek ever. It sucks that they only went 4 seasons but I think alot of it's failure had to do with the poor promotion and constant time slot shuffling. I tried to get into it when it first came on but they kept moving it around and I think ultimately, they put it up against another show that I really liked so that was that. Some of the highlights were Scott Bakula as Captain Archer, Jolene Blalock as T'Pol, the hottest Vulcan I've ever laid eyes on and she constantly wore skin tight uniforms, had sexy time with Trip, Sato and a few other male and female crew members and alien guest stars and spent a lot of time in the reaclimation chamber rubbing lotion all over her near naked body, and Trip, the ship's engineer, who was probably my favorite character after T'Pol. Some of the best episodes covered the reason why the Klingon's in the original series looked different than the Klingons in TNG, The formation of the Federation, The first appearance of Dr. Soong and his work with the metahumans (KHAAAANNNN!!!!), the first uses of the phasers, the transporter and the universal translator. But my all time favorite episode was In a Miror Darkly, a two parter set in the Mirror Universe that starts off with the scene from First Contact (with James Cromwell reprising his role as Zefram Cochran) where the Vulcans land and walk down the ramp only to find hostile earthlings that proceed to waste the crew with shotguns and jack their spaceship and reverse engineer the technology to get the jump on the Vulcans and make them their bitches then Captain Archer finds a rift in time and space and the enterprise crew get their hands on a classic, 1970's style starship and use it to overthrow the federation. Awesome show but the series finale pretty much blew. Completely Underrated Series!

I have never understood that crap where re-casting the parts for an original Star Trek is tantamount to baby raping. Frankly, it was/is far more pathetic to watch the movies and see Shatner trying to look fit and trim in his girdle and hairpiece or Nimoy, the supposedly slower aging half-Vulcan all long in the tooth and stoic under layers of sheetrock make up. I am into Star Trek big time, but at this point could give a damn if the movie sucks or not, as the film series can charitably be described as uneven at best. If this blows, I'll just skip it and move on. I just applaud those responsible for finally putting new faces on the roles. It seems to do okay by Dr. Who. Everyone has their opinion for what makes good Star Trek--and they're all right. That is the humorous and great thing about this site. The more angry and animated the talk-backs get, the more passion you feel for what everyone is discussing. I don't think that there is anything wrong with liking any of the films, from The Motion Picture to Nemesis. For Me, the first four Star Trek films are the best.

The Motion Picture was the most classic Science Fiction story of the Bunch. It is a beautiful film...and even if the story evokes a lot of older Original episodes, it is a welcome return to characters you love. Each Character starts out in a strange and different place than they were in the old show--but by the end of the adventure, they are back together and back to themselves--One of the best film-going experiences of my young life...and I honestly think the Director's cut is the best version of the story (although my older brother prefers the original cut--he is a Trek Purist).

Wrath of Khan, Search for Spock and The Voyage Home form the Spock Trilogy and felt the most like the old TV show. The Final Frontier is a bad movie with some goo things in it. The scene where they are confronting their past is good...until Shatner's "I need my pain" speech. This movie is where Shatner stopped acting and has only parodied himself since.

Undiscovered Country is a Murder Mystery wrapped in Star Trek clothing...that really only needed a louder Continuity Advisor to make it better. Shatner making fun of himself is great. The Purple blood still annoys the crap out of me.

The films of the Next Generation crew have both good points and bad--My main criticisms are that they only wrote them like 2-part TV episodes with bigger budgets and that these films were when they started shafting the continuity of the Novels. The Kirk films built upon the anticipation that they were the only Star Trek in town from 1979 until 1987 and either were direct sequels or filled in the time gap. If Picard and company had tried to tell a trilogy of connected stories, or upped the scale of the conflict with each film, rather than had it get progressively smaller, it might have been more successful.

Generations was more energetic when it focused on Kirk, who they unfortunately killed off. Picard was so sullen due to the death of his brother and nephew that it made Kirk even more interesting. But the movie did show that the TNG series Enterprise looks great if you light it right, including the Ramada Inn sets. First Contact is the first film with Picard and Co standing on their own two feet--and for the most part tells an engaging story--it is Aliens as told the Star Trek way. But there are problems--writers cannot seem to understand what a hive mind is, so they have a Queen, when a hive consciousness should work through any drone body--and this film is the first time the films try to bridge the gap from our world to Star Trek, and they completely write over the top of the Future History established (and maintained pretty well) in the novels. You have to remember that the Novels were where Paramount was fleshing out the universe for a long time--and that in the eighties each new novel was treated as canon and heralded with fanfare. This is the movie that killed that...and led to serious ret-conning like Enterprise.

Insurrection and Nemesis are just badly written TNG 2-parters on the big screen. Data should not have been such a big part of the stories...but Brent Spiner is TNG's Shatner. Ego MUST be served.

The various series were the meat of Star Trek--with the best and most challenging stories. Each Star Trek show is unique of each other and had it's own pros and cons, strong seasons and weak ones. For my money, outside of the Original Series, Deep Space Nine was the best Star Trek show. The cast, the writing, the discussions of faith, politics, science and relationships and the arcs of the characters are all strong. Sure, it started out as a Babylon 5 clone...but it quickly became it's own entity and many of my favorite stories set in the old Alpha Quadrant are right there. And Avery Brooks is the man. The man called Hawk.

So, now what will this new Trek be? The final nail in the coffin? The new life that the series so desperately needs? Or something totally new? At worst, it will be The Phantom Menace...which is pretty bad. At best, it will be a lighter Battlestar Galactica (or better Enterprise)--the few plot points that have been revealed show that the very nature of the time travel story means that this will completely change the continuity--the question will be how much and for how long? Does Abrams want to use this cast to go off and tell all new stories or is it really just a way to bring Shatner to the 24th Century? Then they could make movies with all the casts of the different shows rather than have it be one crew at a time. Who knows? If you are a fan, be excited. Star Trek is coming back. Wait and see if it is good or bad. If it sucks--we have the old shows and can watch them ad nauseam...but what if it is somehow really good? I for one don't want to miss it.

The best ep of Voyager??

Somebody else's previous post...There was one excellent Voyager episode where they recreated the scene in Star Trek: Undiscovered Country with Sulu on the Excelsior with all of the original actors. Awesome episode! SHIELDS!!! Really?? The best of Voyager? Admittedly, the did a fine job of recreating the Sulu Excelsior stuff, but that was about it. For starters, it was the gajillionth time a new ST crew met old crew. And, even though Janeway was just along for Tuvok's mind-meld watching his past unfold, somehow(and I don't recall how they explained it)Sulu saw the ghostly-mind meld visages of Janeway and Tuvok actually standing on his bridge. I love G. Takei, the Sulu Excelsior, etc. but for the love of God, when he asked, "What are you doing on my bridge?" or something like that, I just buried my head in my hands, realizing that once again too many TOS characters were meeting new crew members. Uugghh. Kind of like time travel getting over-used. I do forgive Enterprise for the Xindi WWII time travel ep's in the late third season/early fourth season. Anytime you've got aliens, Nazis, and the German Luftwaffe dog-fighting with a Federation shuttle...I'm there.

On Voyager they had that episode and on DS9, they had the "Forrest Gump" episode when the DS9 crew were in the background of the Trouble with Tribbles...along with that and the TNG crew meeting Zephram Cochrane in First Contact, it was a franchise-wide blitz for the 30th Anniversary. There was even a big 2-hour special on UPN celebrating 30 years of Star Trek.

Great writeup by the way. I haven't read the script. Is film aiming to be more action oriented? Are we going to see a war? What is this film about? Because honestly the reason I lost interest in Trek over the years has been the slow dissolution of the series into war and conflict which is not really what the original series or the early seasons of TNG were about. They're EXPLORERS. If this turns out to be one big battle wit hthe Romulans than this movie has failed me.

Voyager and Enterprise are the best out of all the series! My personal favorites anyway I wouldn't blame you if your favs were DS9 TNG or TOS It's all gold!!!

Pardon me if this repeats others, but this is a long TB.

"The World is Not Enough": Pretty silly, Denise Richards was awful, they created her character solely so her name could be used in the last-line gag.

"ST:TMP": Kinda flat, too tech oriented, but very nice to look at. If they'd been allowed to pump up the human story a bit more it could have been great rather than okay. The director's cut is a solid improvement.

"Insurrection": Rather flat, given the scale of the menace. "Nemesis": Any story that features Data in a leading role risks nuking the fridge (What the fuck does that mean? I haven't seen Indy yet.)IMO, there are basically two great Trek movies, "Khan" and "First Contact" and a couple of other solid movies, "Voyage Home" and "Undiscovered Country." The others range from okay to embarrassing.

Abrams: He's into gimmicks. I stopped watching "Alias" because it got more and more gimmicky. Likewise, "Lost." "Cloverfield" is nothing but a gimmick. These are all regardless of the quality of acting, writing, etc. I just don't care much for gimmicks. I truly hope "Star Trek" doesn't become any more gimmicky than we've already been led to believe.

Insult-based Arguments regarding the quality of a work or its creator: Don't buy into it. Refuse to play that game. Even if you are discussing PWS Anderson or Dr. Uwe Boll. But that's just me.

What you see as the 5th symphony, most of us see as a fun series of sf movies based on a beloved TV show of our youth. That's the way it is. I don't want Trek lightened up into modern puffiness, but that's how they make the money. The original series and movies are always there. It's like Alan Moore said, "People say to me, 'They really destroyed your comic' and I say, 'No, it's right up there on the shelf.'"

Me?? I am not too concerned over the cast or the Director, I am more concerned over the Writing, as to me that is much more important....I just hope we will see a level of Depth in the story telling, and with the emphasis Paramount has on bring Trek back, and putting the $$$ into it I have hope that they'll strive to embrace the old fans (the dwindling few that are left) at the same time working to bring new ones into the fold...Sure this not you fathers StarTrek, but its cut form the same cloth (at least I hope so)

No i dont doubt that there is a level of concern over the original fan base., but when the arguement is manthong or 90210,why would they take it seriously???? They'll say yea they are partialy correct, the movie HAS a young cast, its going to have a youthful perspective- its about new Star Fleet graduates eager to get out and see the universe, to make a mark, its how they BECOME the crew of the most celibrated ship in StarFleet...its not about battle tested officers or past retirement aged crew who cant give up the limelight.....

While still trying to figure out how in the heck to format my posts into paragraphs, lol--- 1] What elements of ST:TMP do some of you feel it shares with 2001? (Bonus question: Who told V'ger the o, y, and a in its name were blacked out?)...What special type of 'awe' does a great SF film presumably provide that a film like Lawrence of Arabia, say, doesn't? Or is there a difference? 2] What are the thematic elements of Blade Runner that some of you seem to feel lifts it into the 'greatness' category? Regardless, would you agree it's a flawed film in many ways (regardless of cut/version)? 3] A lot of posters seem to believe there is much divergence in what makes 'good' ST; is there then more consensus of agreement as to what constitutes bad Trek? Lastly, fwiw, while I've been disappointed by much of 'Trek' over the years I did want to mention that I've never gone to a ST film or watched any of the new series hoping they would be bad.

If it was supposed to be a western in space, why does it so much more closely resemble a navy in Space? Or is a movie like Master and Commander considered a nautical Western? I'm glad Joss Whedon was born so he could realize Roddenberry's vision for a TV show.

Christmas Releases Suck Anyway

Christmas is the busiest time of year for me and I always hate when they release all the better movies then. I never get to see them until DVD and I often forget or lose interest by then. I mean, seriously, who's brilliant idea was it to make that a big release time? But then, who knows how this movie will turn out. Releasing it in May or not, it might be best to wait for DVD anyway.
Movie, Show, Captain Breakdown

Enterprise was good in it's last season, cause the producers said fuck it, do whatever you want, you're canceled anyway. Still, I always thought Archer was by far the worst, most pathetic captain. Even worse than Janeway and her Elizabethian holodeck fantasies. Malcolm was the only sensible one on the show. I liked Trip but I always confused him with Tom Paris in my mind. I would have mutinied Archer's ass for my own protection. And I loved mirror universe Hoshi.

But I can't really say what the best show was. I'd put the original, TNG and DS9 at a tie for different reasons. DS9 had the best arc and some really good, darker characters like Garak and Quark. It also had the best space battles by far, with every race attacking every other, ala Babylon 5. TNG, in it's prime, had some of the best stories. Data, Picard and Worf were great characters with great episodes. Geordi was worse than Archer, as characters go however. But the original show was so dramatic. I loved the bold colors and the closeups so much that I'd say it has the most rewatchability. It was really all in how they filmed it. Voyager only had 7 of 9's amazing ass to get us through, otherwise it was mostly a bad joke. They squandered the holographic doctor. They could have done a lot of cool things with him, but it just went nowhere.

As for movies, I'm one of the few that liked (not loved) Insurrection because it felt most like an episode of the show and that's all I really wanted, were more episodes. Nemesis was the worst piece of Star Trek crap to ever fall out of the sky and land on my shoulder. The lamest episodes of Voyager rocked that shit. I waited so long for a movie with Romulans in it and they even fucked that up. The only good thing about Nemesis was they finally turned off Data's emotion chip. Obviously movies 2 and 4 were the best of the franchise. First Contact was good, but felt a little forced (enough with the borg already!).

As captains go, Picard was the best and I'd most want to serve under him. Sisco would kick all their asses in a fight (yes Kirk included). Kirk was the most independent and knew how to treat women. Archer would be the best at massaging Janeway's feet at the end of the night. He could probably use some lessons in manliness from Wesley Crusher though (gotta start somewhere).

WAITAMINUTE! Insurrection was barf!!!

...I just can't take anything Trek seriously anymore. Of course I mean "seriously" as in the kind of suspension of disbelief one needs to enjoy any work of fiction, especially science fiction. The whole guiding mindset of all the series are stuck in the era from the late 60's to the early 90's. That whole space age/New Age/PC vibe just doesn't have any weight in today's world. Also the whole "all aliens look just like humans but with globs of foam latex on their heads" deal is just laughable anymore. Yeah, I know Trek canon states that an early race in our galaxy seeded skads of other planets with magical humanoid-DNA fertilizer, or whatever. But let's face it, that was just an excuse for the shoddy, underfunded FX work on aliens characters... it's just cheaper to have all aliens look like humans, after all. I think what I'm trying to say is that Trek is just plain played out, much like franchises from earlier eras like Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, Lost In Space, etc. Just let it sit and a few decades from now, we'll all be old geezer enjoying all the nostalgic campiness of Trek on TV Land or TCM.

DS9 was better than Babylon 5. I agree that Voyager sucked. As did ENTERPRISE and Nemesis, but Insurrection also sucked. First Contact is great stuff.

Recasting?!

I had to put my two cents in. As to the post way back there. This is not like recasting Sherlock Holmes. This is not like recasting Superman. This is not like recasting Tarzan, or Hamlet. Those are literary characters, reinterpreted and changed, altered a hundred times by a hundred different people. Kirk IS Bill Shatner!! He is what made kirk not the other way around. Same wit hthe whole cast and crew. In the Series, in the movies, heck even in the comica, the animated series and the o so many novels. Who is Kirk?? Some 'space captain' no it's Bill! You wouldn't recast John Mclain as not Bruce Willis. You wouldn't change Indiana Jones to some 'new' actor and still call him Indi. Riddick wouldn't work as anyone but Vin Desel .. these characters are made by the actors playing them not by the writers making the script. Sure they may decide on the words but the character comes from those actors. Wether you like or hate JJ isn't my point. I think he has done some fine stuff. But you don't screw with a classic that built a legend because you felt some nostalgia. Make another crew that is 'enterprise like' if those are your favorite characters. Set it in the Original series time if you want. But don't screw with what people already know and love and then say yours is the better version because it is new and hip and has money for effects. Maybe that was 3 cents .. but there ya go.
Hope & Expectations

My hope for this movie is that it will REFRESH the Dead franchise that is StarTrek, that the new cast will do a good job replacing/updating-remember that this a younger, inexperienced version -the Classic StarTrek cast (and that I can once again look at a Starfleet Captain and not think commercial pitchman in a bad hairpeice)...I hope the writing will be there, as the best Trek episodes where the ones that made you think, and hopefully (and so far the casting has equaled my expectations) they will bring StarTrek up to today's standards and practices...yeah, i mean "play this one for the O C crowd" bring in a bit of Sex, update the TnA factor, Language and situations that reflects the real world, I also fully expect that some Trekies will hold on to there Classic Trek and not except this because it doesnt have the classic cast (I can understand this as personally, I Don't buy Daniel Craig as Bond- to me it doesnt work, good spyfilm but its not Bond) but in the end for me I hope that this new cast will erase the Bad taste I have for Trek after the last few films-Yes it seems the only good films where the even numbered ones- and that once again StarTrek will be back bringing us well done stories of the human condition disguised as ScienceFiction tales
I'd accept
