I'm curious - when a fairly non-specific review like this comes in (good and well written) surely they have to provide you with proof of how and when the screening went down, even if that info isn't published?

There isn't really any information in the review that couldn't be cribbed from the endless promos released for this bad boy.

Bring it on regardless.

if you'd been online saw no full reviews were on the ENTIRE internets, you'd be at least a little savvy to the cynicsm and drop in non-specific spoilers such as 'the scene that follows the bank is X, with Y and Z as a few lines of dialogue that havent been included in the trailers'.

The whole 'i dont want to spoil it for you' is a fair point, but just to say 'It was great' over several paragraphs isn't far removed from just saying 'IT WAS AWESOME' and nothing else.

And that would just be a bus load of daftness...

In the latest Issue of Empire Magazine the film is described as being the Heat of comic book movies where Batman and Joker are the Pacino and De Niro characters. This is just a pieced together review with very little specific info - hence it is marketed as "spoiler free" which basically means they haven't seen it and are generalising based on numerous pieces of info about the film that we already know.

not very important. But I'm relieved to see that we're not given another "Incredible Hulk" where the character developement isn't left on the cutting room floor in sacrifrice for action. Many consider Spider Man 2 the best comic book adaptation so far. Some feel Iron Man got just about everything right. Well, I'm predicting folks that the Dark Knight will be not just a good "superhero" or "comicbook" movie, but a god damn cinematic masterpiece.

The film only screened once so far and that was to a room full of studio execs last month (otherwise there would be a shit load of reviews online by now). Half of this review was taken from shit that we already know and have seen in the trailers (not to mention fanboy speculation). Even "the 3 sides of bruce wayne" was taken from what Christian Bale said about the character back in 2005. FAKE.

WITHOUT having seen the movie....but I'm going to wait till I see the movie before I judge it. So far, the signs point to a few problems, namely:

1. The approach they've taken with trying to set it in the 'real' world - a big mistake; it didn't work in the first film. It just makes the movie tedious.

2.Batman Begins had a few good ideas and some good moments, but overall was like watching paint dry. The Dark Knight is made by the same people.

From the trailers, Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker is over-acted and otherwise unremarkable. He's giving exactly the kind of performance I would expect from ANY actor playing a supervillian in a comic book movie. No more, no less.

This reviewer compares The Dark Knight to 'Heat' - one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Like Batman Begins, it's an over-long, pointless movie that's like watching paint dry. I wish Harry would tone down his own hype and take a balanced view of these movies.

If that was your ONE issue with a movie you would comment on how it was addressed in a sequel. Unless you had pieced your review together from an issue of Empire Magazine, interviews with the actors and what's available online. This is bullshit...still can't wait for the movie, though.

...and some guesses of the, uh, "viewer" who sent this. I don't follow all news on this movie - still waiting for a Joker as good as Jack Nicholson's, because Marilyn Manson in a coat is certainly not the Joker, and while sheep may believe so, the fact remains that the death of any actor who plays any character does not magically and automatically improve said character in any way - but I'll bet 99% of what this guy writes can be found online.

***WARNING. I AM WARNING YOU RIGHT FUCKING NOW. DO NOT READ BELOW THIS IF YOU DO NOT WANT THE DARK KNIGHT SPOILED FOR YOU. THIS IS SERIOUS SHIT.*** Rachel Dawes dies. The Joker dies. Two-Face dies. Batman and Alfred cry like babies while hugging each other. Jim Gordon kills Two-Face. Batman kills The Joker after The Joker learns his identity and threatens Alfred's life. The Joker drops Rachel Dawes out of a window but she only breaks one leg and both arms but then the Joker stabs her in the heart (literally) later right in front of Batman. Bat Girl is introduced (sort of, it's actually Barbara Gordon, Jim's daughter, but no mention of Bat Girl really). Clayface is introduced at the very end of the film in a very strange way so he will probably be the main villain in the 3rd film. There is an actor on TV who has a "bizarre skin reaction" to a cosmetic skin cream which made his hands "like melted caramel" according to a doctor's report. That's about it, folks. The movie fuckin rocked. If you can see it in IMAX, THEN GO FUCKING SEE IT IN IMAX!!! THE ACTION SCENES ARE FUCKING BRILLIANT!!! Best movie of the year by far.

Shame on you indeed. ;-)

I won't argue over the merits of BB. But to say Nolan's movies aren't intense and engrossing is missing something spectacular.

I watched Batman 1989 again and Nolan's scope is just so vast. In the previous Batmans you can see soundstages and perfectly lit chase sequences with no suspense whatsoever. And I think Nolan's realism fits Batman more than other superheroes because he has no super powers and is just trying to make Gotham better one criminal at a time.

And it's funny that in the same breath the "synopsiser" says this is Nolan's first linear movie -- and then compares it to Godfather 2, which is nothing but flashbacks. I guess he means there is similarity with Al Pacino's intrigue portion, but that's funny to me.

As if the original Batman was anything close to Godfather... gimme a laugh please. It was good, not great, I still trying to figure out what Ken Watanabe was doing in it and why... what a waste. Maybe this one is great, but I think that because of Ledgers's death judgement on it will be always a bit biased. Even if his performance is lesser than Nicholson's, people will always give him more credit than for the former. Early death has that strange effect, to transform people in more than they really were. Whatever.

I am a die-hard for continuity. I hate when series recast; it seems almost better to write a character out. If the Dark Knight turns out to be an exceptional film, does anyone think Nolan should remove Katie Holmes from the original film? Should they refilm the scenes between Christian and Maggie. I mean, really, how many scenes were there between the two characters of Bruce and Rachel. Or digitally replace Katie with Maggie, via the George Lucas "Sebastian Shaw" technique? Your thoughts?

"Vision" of Batman...

Jun 25th, 2008
08:01:31 AM
To respond to "just pillow talk", "new" is not always BETTER. Just because this "vision" of the Joker is new, it doesn't mean it's better. This Joker is a terrorist, and doesn't resemble ANY previous incarnation of the Joker in film, animation, or comics. I don't want the Cesar Romero Joker, and I don't want the Nicholson Joker, even though both of these Jokers had "roots" in their original comic persona. I actually LIKE the visual "look" of this Joker, but I have a MAJOR issue with the "applied" makeup and no backstory for the character. If Nolan wanted to have "Ichi The Killer" in the movie, he should have created a totally new character with no reference to a standard & canon Batman character. I'll probably see this movie, but as a download or bootleg: I don't intend on giving WB, Nolan, or DC any of my money for fucking with my well-loved characters.

Okay.......I have a very good inside source who has seen a 98% complete cut of The Dark Knight and has given me some key plot points.......read ahead at your own risk....... spoliers . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . In my contact's honest opinion the film will satisfy just about every fan of the first film. It develops the themes of Batman Begins logically and earnestly. Here are the key points: 1. Joker's plan is to "kill Batman" as he opines in the trailers we've seen......but his greater plan is not to just kill Batman but discredit him as a crimefighter. Law enforcement's trust of Batman, and specifically Gordon's relationship with the Dark Knight is the reason that organized crime is on the ropes at the start of the film. Joker begins to discredit Batman, not only by openly attacking him, but creating Two-Face. Two-Face goes on a murderous rampage in this film, brutally murdering many of the crimelords that hired the Joker. By the end of the film, law enforcement, and Gordon, no longer trust Batman or any vigilantes, and Gordon's fear of escalation rings true. 2. Many have asked why bring back Rachel Dawes? Rachel is Wayne's only connection to a normal life and the happy memories of his childhood before his family's death. SPOILER: Joker kills Rachel Dawes by tossing her off a rooftop when he discovers her connection to Batman (though he never discovers that Wayne is Batman, he does figure there is some connection through doing his homework on the events from the first film.) Wayne, as Batman, tries to save her in freefall (as was done heavily in the Burton/Schumacher films) but is unsuccessful, this crushes Wayne and by the end of the film, he contemplates giving up the mantle of the Bat for good, which brings us to point three...... 3. We discover, very late in the film, that Dawes has a cousin.....Richard Grayson, who lost his parents early in life in a freak accident and sees Dawes as a parent figure. Dawes' death serves as a catalyst that will drive him toward becoming a vigilante. Supposedly, the third film will focus on Wayne as he takes Grayson under his wing in hopes of healing and preventing him from making the same mistake.........(this is the big Spoiler not on display in anyway in the trailers) The film is likened to Empire Strikes Back. It is the middle part of a trilogy. At its conclusion, Wayne/Batman is on the ropes, Gotham doesn't have a defender, and Joker is still on the loose. How they will handle Ledger's absence in the next film has not been determined, but the discussions surrounding the third film deal with healing (Gotham's and Wayne's) and reconciling Batman as a vigilante and a hero. As I said.....read at your own risk.

Preacherhunter, thanks for the scoop! We'll see if it pans out that way. However, I still have concerns with the Rachel Dawes character. I do not fault Nolan for keeping her character, but I do think he needs to re-edit Batman Begins for continuity's sake. There will be little emotional connection to her death because we are so used to seeing Katie Holmes in that role. (In fact, some people might even cheer for her death, which is probably not the response Nolan wants for the audience.) Hence, my original point of reshooting.

FARRRTTTT. I guess your not a fan of the Batman movie series. Every Batman movie has had a new love intrest. Basinger, Pfeiffer, Kidman, O'Donnell, Holms, The uglier Gyllenhaal. You I'm glad she dies, she deserved it. I hope they fucking just get rid of the whole love story with Batman for Batman Begins Forever. I bet comic book movies have a hard time keeping actresses on because they all know what happened to Margot Kidder. And it looks like Kirsten Dunst hasn't been getting many good roles since old Tobes came along.

Series7, the difference is that those other actresses played OTHER characters. Besides, you prove my point. No one will connect with Rachel Dawes death because of the connection to Katie Holmes. It will be laughable. Like you, I prefer batman without a love interest, but Nolan felt her necessity. My suggestion of reshoots seems plausible if this film becomes the masterpiece everyone claims it to be. Is it a minor gripe? Yeah. Will I enjoy the film regardless? You betcha!

although he also said no harley quinn, and that's up in the air at the moment. perhaps, in cruel joke, showing dr. quinzel isn't the same as showing harely quinn, and maybe mentioning an orphan kid isn't the same as having a robin...

although in everything i've ever read, Nolan is pretty serious about just not wanting to go the robin route. it's too early in batman's career.

everyone forgets that kid with fighting parents in BB that batman gave a nightscope to, was with racheal in the narrows, and who the police at the end of BB said 'his parents are missing'.

sounds like a set up to some sort of a robin to me. but probably hinting at possibilities of a batman future we'll never see in a nolan trilogy.

but i think the basic concensus you get when you scrape off everyones' over exuberance about his role, is that he gives a surprising performance, and that he dug really deep and became the character he was portraying. Nolan said in a Wired article that when heath was describing the voice he would find- 'like a ventriloquist- kinda high and low at the same time' that even then heath sounded a little nutso....and the fact he could no longer sleep after the movie, kept a creepy diary....phew.

nolan and warner will never admit it, but we will be witnessing an actor going over the edge to become a character, and we know how that ended up. that's not why i'm going to see it, but it should be interesting.

Nor do I think his work on Gilliam's film did him in. It was a medication overdose, he should have smarter, yes, but it really isn't anything to make out more than it is.

no, they didn't film them back to back, and there is no release date set. Ledger's death throws a serious kink into the plotting of 3 because all sources say Joker lives thru TDK and the conflict between Two-Face and Joker was really supposed to carry over into the next movie from what Nolan has hinted at. He has also said that he can't think of recasting Joker, so I have no clue how he's going to explain Joker going into hiding or simply stopping... Joker just doesn't do that.

***SERIOUSLY FOLKS, I JUST SAW THE MOVIE LAST NIGHT ON A HUGE IMAX SCREEN AT A SNEAK PEEK IN DOWNTOWN L.A. DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER*** If you guys want to know how The Joker and Two Face die: The Joker wounds Batman badly by shooting him in the shoulder and the foot with an antique tommy gun but Batman disarms the Joker with some kind of elastic military gripping wire and the Joker runs to an armored car where he has Alfred tied up in bubble-wrap and he puts a knife to his throat and threatens to kill him but Batman uses a gadget that Lucius Fox gave him that sends out a piercing high-pitched sound that only crazy people can hear and it fucks the Joker up bad and he grabs his head and starts crawling on the ground but it also effects Batman because they're both insane. Batman turns the gadget off and jumps onto the Joker and they beat the crap out of each other until Batman finally gets the upper hand gets ready to break the Joker's neck when the Joker starts crying like a maniac and convinces Batman's sane side to let him live while Afred is trying to tell him something but his mouth is covered with tape but then the Joker pulls out a pistol and tries to shoot Batman in the head but Batman dodges at almost point-blank range (somehow) and Batman ejects a blade out of his wrist and plundges it into the Joker's throat. The Joker chokes on like a fucking gallon of bubbling, saliva-mixed blood while taunting Batman with half-baked anarchist philosophies and trying to punch him until he dies in Batman's arms. Two-Face is arriving at a mob boss's mansion when Jim Gordon confronts him and tells him that he is under arrest. Two-Face laughs and taunts Gordon and runs into the mansion while he motions to his cronies to fire at Gordon. They spray at Gordon but Gordon runs and ducks behind his car and uses his door for a shield. He shoots and kills one of the thugs but then he runs around the back of the mansion and climbs in through a window and the thugs don't see him because it's so dark outside. Gordon finds Two-Face inside the house after he has strangled a mob boss in his own bathtub. Two-Face is standing over the tub when Gordon is standing outside the bathroom and they have a conversation about justice, corruption and the future of Gotham for about a minute until Gordon realizes that Two-Face will never be the Harvey Dent persuer of true justice he once knew. Two-Face turns around to charge Gordon and Gordon pops off 2 shots hitting Two-Face in the chest. Two-Face falls on top of Gordon and screams right directly in his face. Most of it is inane jibberish but he tries to make a point about the good people of Gotham or something. Two-Face wraps the strangling cord around Gordon's neck and his face turns blue but Gordon is able to shoot one more bullet up through Two-Face's chest, through his jaw, and out of his eye. ***SPOILERS ENDED***

Joker has daddy issues (here's a tissue), cryptic explanation for the chelsea grin, disappearing pencil trick, Dent going after the mob under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, Two Face reveal in a hospital from Gordon's POV, the temporary batcave is under the docks, Rachel doesn't die when she is dropped out the penthouse window, but maybe later on, and the film is linear, no flashbacks. I know casting discussions are annoying, but in this case I am curious. I don't think they will do it myself, the death of an actor is always a much more touchy thing than recasting due to "scheduling conflicts" AKA my "hubby's wacko and says I can't come out of the basement brainwashing center long enough to film it." Or the ever true, "My performance was so bad the director received death threats so I was recast."
Nice synopsis, though I agree

are you guys full of it or what? you do realize emotions are fragile and that you should not mess with them? Preacher's "spoilers" sounds more plausible than Venom's but I question both of their validity. If Joker and/or Two-Face kick the bucket in this movie, I will go nuts. worst mistake ever. And I kinda suspect Two-Face won't be a huge huge presence in the movie (in two-face form)... probably just near the end of the movie... the Richard Grayson bit made me smile and I think I'd love to have that little nugget in the movie, but it sounds... too perfect. Anyway, if either of you speak the truth, or neither, I am looking forward to this movie like no other this year.

I remember the bitching when Ledger was cast, some from me as well, but from what little I've seen so far I think it was an inspired choice. The hard thing will be finding an actor that is willing to follow a final performance, or rather a final completed performance. There will be a lot of baggage and room for comparisons there. The character would never truly be your own.

I'm looking forward to it, but my expectations are low because I've been disappointed by superhero movies so many times. I liked BB though. Indy 4 ate cock (no other way to spin it). Iron man was good, not great, not mediocre. But I didn't think it was the second coming. I hope Watchmen is good, thats my favorite comic book, and it could easily end up being the worst movie ever made. But I'm giving it a chance because its never been translated to another medium.

The scene of Two Face that was revealed on whysoserious is when he starts to go a bit awol and SPOILER SPOLIER SPOILER He does die at the end. You have to put that death in context of what that means for the city and what Batman decides to do at the end of the film to keep the memory of Harvey Dent and what he meant alive. And Stay after the credits, because Sam Neill makes a cameo as Maxwell Lord to recruit Bruce for the Justice League initiative! Then he finally gets to dock over the water, but there are DUCKS there!!! He can't throw the bomb there! Not sure if anyone's responded to your comment, because I've been skipping the spoilers, but the vision of Joker is new for screen but NOT for the comics. Nolan borrowed from the first ever appearances of the Joker in the 30s, before the Comics Code pussification of DC, when violent crime comics were still the thing. Joker was a cold-blooded killer who would mess with the authorities. Read Batman #1, Joker says he's going to kill a certain person at midnight, and he does, despite all the police protection in Gotham. And he does it through tricks, disguises, and sometimes, gas. He does it a few more times before Batman can catch him. So this is the ORIGINAL Joker vision, but through a modern anarchist sensibility.

Uh ... I skimmed it to avoid spoilers, but is it just me or did the reviewer not actually say whether it was worse than, the same as, or better than Batman Begins? So he gave a "review" which was basically a synopsis of the film with no mention of rating, quality, or how much he enjoyed the film. WTF? So why was this posted? Just to spoil the movie for fans who can't resist reading a "review" and don't actually get anything out of it except plot details??? Is it just me on this or what? To all future "reviewers": please state what you liked about the film, what you didn't like about the film, provide a rating, and avoid discussing plot details that have no relation to the actual review. Thanks.

Did I want to know why Dent decided to call himself Two Face? No. Did I want to know why Batman's in Hong Kong? No. Did I want to know what the "best" moments in the film were? NO! sorry, i did'nt go into depth quite enough how gay "a bright star's final burst of light upon the screen." was.

the gay clones are in bed, facing each other during sex and mumbling to each other through soft but sloppy kisses. it's raining outside, and a lot of candles are lit. someone left SADE playing in the living room, but you can just make out the bass coming through the walls.

that's how gay that was. if you have to make a gay joke here, you should at least explain it.

Your anticipation / experience of the first Burton "Batman" was much the same as my own--only I was around 17 at the time. Although I thoroughly enjoyed the movie at the time, I do agree that it is, put bluntly, "boring." The fact that I've not returned to watch it in like fifteen years is evidence enough of that. I have no urge to see Basinger and Wahl sit in their newspaper office wondering who the Batman is, nor do I care for extended sequences of Bruce Wayne doing little more than brooding. Don't get me wrong--I think Keaton did a GREAT job, and I like the brooding Wayne. But there was TOO much of it and not enough action to offset it.
