Blah, blah, blah, blah...I'll kill some space so no one accidentally sees any spoilers without having to actually read into the post. Blah, blah, blah, blah...okay, enough of that. Here is all I wanted to say (LAST CHANCE SPOILER): supposedly the new plot -- politically correct as it instantly sounds -- centers on global warming and Keanu coming to warn us of the danger. Right, as if we needed him versus already being forced to listen to Al Gore (or now Obama) and the Green movement on cable news all the time. Ok, fine -- so he shows up and now the new Klaatu tells us that if we don't clean up our act very soon, the Earth will die and so will we. So apparently that's his new message: the Earth dies, you die. Ok, fine -- so he's a benevolent alien coming to warn us. Which brings me to my plot question: why the hell would a seriously advanced alien race -- and I mean one that is obviously waaaaaay ahead of us technologically since clearly they are capable of interstellar travel and things like that -- ONLY come to Earth to warn us about the climate going bye-bye? My point being, at least in the original version the MAIN PLOT made sense. Namely, Klaatu was an interstellar cop who came to say "Hey, you guys are way too violent on your world, and NOW you're building rockets and heading into space. We can't have you getting rowdy in our neck of the woods. So cut that shit out or we're gonna annihilate you!" See, THAT makes sense. There's a true cause and effect. But in this new version how does the Earth suffering from climate change...even if it DOES go totally south and it DOES kill us all in a 100 or so years...how does THAT affect OTHER WORLDS? In short, why should they give a shit? What, they think we're gonna export LA's smog pollution? And if these guys are so benevolent that they want to warn us -- again, given how ADVANCED they are -- why are they sending Keanu to warn us as opposed to helping the fuck out? Why is Keanu coming to TALK to us as opposed to bringing us some super-duper atmospheric greenhouse gas vacuum cleaner or something like that? Anyway, I hope this thing holds together. I love the original, so I hope for the sake of making some sort of politically correct remake that they didn't fuck this up JUST so it could be politically correct.

I remember many many times where I read some "script reviews" here or over the top reviews of antecipated movies and went all excited to see them and just got that "pfffft" sensation... many, many times. To an extent where AICN is just what it is now: a hater stirrer against some studios and projects and a pusher for things they didn't see but are all loving anyway. Bias is the death for a "critic" or a site and that's what AICN has become. Biased. IMO the original, altough a classic, has many flaws and I would like to see the so important main message reworked. To adapt it's main story to the events that happens to our world today isn't in any way a crime against the original (well, that on the closed minds of some)on the contrary: it shows that it's main core still there while directed to the problems that cause fear to the humanity today. Of course, the wannabes hypocrites HATE any idea of a remake, much worse, then, if it adds any type of update or modern ideas to it. Basically: this site , even if the movie is good for all it's own merits, will never aknowledge that. About Keanu, well, he won't be any less "wooden" than the original actor who was, without any doubt, only less wooden in it than Gort. I hope Keanu can improve the character and I can see how he is perfect to play the alien, as with his multicultural background he can relate with people all around the world, VERY different from the all American perfect white male that Michael Rennie played at that time. Maybe that's why some hate so much Keanu? Because he isn't your wannabe white perfect male? Why an alien should be? The world changed but, unfortunately, some "critics" didn't realize that... and still make money from those stupid enough for not having an opinion for themselves... Of course this is the PC version of DTESS where we are warned to stop polluting. Which means Chinese and Indians may become endangered since they are the worst polluters on the planet by far. (And we're not talking about little old harmless CO2, but stuff that WILL kill you long term). This poster on another site, Luboš Motl, said it best: "It’s amazing that someone is willing to take one of the first pioneering science-fiction movies and turn it, in the cheapest pornographic way, into a propaganda tool of the dumbest ideological fad of this decade." The only element missing is having the robot played by Al Gor(t). But maybe they figured, Whoa!, two robotic actors would be too many. That makes so much sense, to have futuristic do-gooders fly all the way here in a saucer, making god only knows what kind of carbon/nuclear footprint to use their far advanced technology to tell us progress is bad. Hey, that kinda DOES sound like Al Gore.... No thanks. Keanu isn't the problem as I see it with this film. I like Keanu. He's held down several iconic roles over the years. He's also made some fairly horrible stuff too, but overall he's generated a good track record. He's not the problem. The problem is Brendan Fraser and the paint by numbers plot of this film. There'll be zero drama, even for a kid's story, with the only sense of wonder being the watching-a-video-game sort. Brendan Fraser seems like a good guy, and he wasn't bad in "The Mummy" or "The Quiet American," but he's typecast here. He's a cardboard cutout. Which, for what the film is, is probably fine. I'm just not expecting a story that makes any sense, even in a created-reality sort of way. Kids'll dig it though. You watch.

I have never seen such a hyperventilating, pants-around-their-knees bunch of geek fanboys jerks in my life. Do you people KNOW that most of the people in the real world have never even seen the original? Do you KNOW that although the original is fine, chockfullamessage cinema for the TIME that it was STILL quite hilarious in its execution? THis remake is going to ROCK THE WORLD and Keanu is PERFECT as Klaatu. Why? First of all because he's an actor who won't chew the trees up. Secondly as one intelligent person said, he is multicultural. The man resembles a humanoid alien that we are used to thinking about, although he is a very beautiful version. Finally, Keanu is perfect because he CARES about the material and I am sure took it as seriously as he took The Matrix and A Scanner Darkly. The man is dedicated to preserving the dignity and integrity of the original story. He has also played quite a few "savior" type of roles. The criticism he is garnering is absolutely hilarious in my opinion. The director, Scott Derrickson, directed The Exorcism of Emily Rose, which was based on an actual case of demon possession. He handled it very well and very seriously. If you folks are not aware of these fine points, you're either so biased that your opinion should wipe my ass or you're simply not thinking. I have see an image of the new Gort and it's FANTASTIC. I can't tell you how excited I am to see the movie and I am a fan of the original.

The timing of this film is perfect, what with the world and its environment in complete chaos. We obviously - in the past 50+ years - have learned nothing about how to respect the earth or each other. Millions of people as I said have not seen the original and they NEED to hear this message. Nowhere have I read that the remake will focus on global warming; Keanu has said that environmentalism plays a part in his film. If it did NOT it would be a cash cow Hollywood piece of crap (but it won't be, see above). The environment is the biggest global issue we are dealing with today aside from the war. If man does not do something to try to cub the pollution, trash flow, heat index and gobbling up of every resource we can find, we're goners and worse, we may take our filthiness into space and gobble up other planets, which without knowing for sure, I would bet is part of the script.

I can't conceive how TDTESS could be improved, unless they're planning on doing it with an all-under 30 cast and in color for the young people today who hate B&W movies or movies that don't feature a cast of twenty-something year olds in every role. I mean how can they beat the coolest flying saucer in film (Besides the one in Forbidden Planet?) In this new Earth Stood Still remake instead of a seamless saucer they'll probably have some tricked out, over-detailed, light covered Star Wars-type ship and a Terminator-type robot in the role of Gort. Oh yeah, can't forget cussing and nudity. They have to have 50% of the dialog emphasized with cuss words and a sex scene between the Klaatu character and the main female otherwise the young people wouldn't want to see it.

I don't have a problem with Keanu in the role of Klaatue, he'll probably do fine. And I'm sure the SPX will be good, although I hope not overdone. What I do have a problem with in a remake of this, is that I'm sure they will turn it into some sort of romance to get the chick-flick crowd. Whatever the message will be in this movie that is important enough for an alien race to visit and warn us about, will probably be the secondary storyline to him getting involved romantically with the female star. You know it's true. Otherwise, how will guys get their girlfriends or wives to see it with them? Isn't that what they do with every movie that is geared to males, from everything from Pearl Harbor to Spiderman? The fate of the world is in balance, but they have to always put in some sappy kleenix scene for the gals to fantasize about.

it's more about Helen being the only one besides Dr. Barnhard who believe in Klaatu and wants to help him. Since both leads are very attractive there will no doubt be some interplay between them, but he is leaving earth. If it happens hey - it worked in Starman.

the original in black and white as almost a science fiction noir film. Keanu Reeves is no Michael Rennie, with that severe facial bone structure and British accent. Reeves doesn't have the gravitas to be taken seriously as a messenger of potential doom. If this is to be remade at all, at least cast Ralph Fiennes. God, first The Haunting, then Andromeda Strain, now this. Wise's best genre efforts are being thrashed. Ironically, the original is on AMC this afternoon.

The only thing I didn't like about the original is that Klaatu had to deliver his 'message" not to the top leaders of the world, but to a bunch of nobody scientists. And you knew no government would ever listen to these eccentric guys. Which meant basically, the world was going to continue it's downhill path until Gort blasted us out of the universe. Instead of leaving the audience with a sense of hope for our future, we left the theater thinking "Oh man, we're doomed."

I never thought of that. For me an Alien should not be fully related to any specific race of our planet and that's why I believe Keanu Reeves is perfect for it as he is mixed. And I understand that you are antecipating the movie, believe me, some of the things you say are reasonable, but try do not envolve yourself too much with the hatred. Sometimes it's funny to give a bit of good sense in the discussions here, but don't stress yourself. I have no doubts the movie will have it's merits for it's own. Not doing propaganda for United Nations and have a mixed actor as an Alien is already an improvement IMO. But, and it's a huge BUT..."The Day The Earth Stood Still", besides "Creature from the Black Lagoon" is one of my favorite movies of all time. THERE IS NO WAY anyone could do this movie justice. And as far as Reeves' past roles...you'll remember Neo/Mr. Anderson was an office drone who slowly discovered he was the "One". For real, some people like him, some not. That's besides the point. He won't be playing the character the same way Rennie did, nor should he. Rennie was very fine, but was the 50s. Keanu will have his own take on it and some will dig it, some won't. The same way some here think Rennie was oustdanding and I think he was average/good. I have to say that the best thing should wait to see the teaser next week and then we will see what is the road this is taking. Adding to that, I see a lot of hypocrisy here with all the screaming when a remake is announced. Much more in this case, when the movie is really old. Things can get re-worked and updated, the original will still there! And the ones claiming that Hollywood isn't making new things, most part of the material out there are new things and arent good. When new ideas come out (like Shyamanlan's movies, for example), people freak out and bash him to death for doing something new. At same time, people here keep digging some dudes who adapt or rehash materials already out there, like Snyder for adapting graphic novels word for word, pic for pic, or exhaustive rehashs as Batman and Terminator (the latter just a masked remake in the works). So, you bash some people for doing the same other people are doing, but they are congratulated for doing so. To say that isn't bias is laughable. And the studio little "hand" here and there is becoming more and more aparent, what takes away, as a I said in an ealier post, all possible credibility this site could still hold from the old times. It would make no sense, whatsoever, for an alien race to warn us about something that only affects planet Earth. Hey, it’s not as if we in the US and Russia don’t still possess enough nuclear weapons to wipe out our planet many times over. Putting the lid on us homo (snicker, he said HOMO!) sapiens inability to resolve disputes any other way than violence is still relevant today. Being a fan of the original (no, didn’t see it when it was running in theatres), I was not happy when I heard of this re-make. LOL, just a fan of Keanu's and great sci-fi. I do respect the original film very much. When it was announced that there would be a remake starring Keanu I was thrilled and actually threw a party over Labor Day in honor of the whole notion. We watched TDTESS and had a blast. I'm the type of person who welcomes creative evolution and I truly believe that this is an exceptional time to bring the message to the forefront of the public's mind in the way they react to best - a huge visual fortune cookie. I respect all of the actors on board, the director, and honestly feel that they will or actually already did treat the old film with respect while updating it to make it more exciting. That does not have to be a bad thing. What Keanu said was, "My Klaatu says that if the Earth dies, you die. If you die, the earth survives. I’m a friend to the earth.” .... and I see the original idea still present. Klaatu is visiting with a stern warning, looking out for the interests of other worlds, with ours second to their superior knowledge. He's not going to suck the sap out of the trees and refresh earth people with a green milkshake.

...how about "the script" which I did a review for. And yes, Keanu couldn't hold a candle to Michael Rennie's acting ability. The movie was filmed right the first time; it doesn't merrit a remake. Considering the late, great Robert Wise won 4 Academy Awards for his work as a director, I'd say that speaks for itself. Anyone who says, "You're a hater" or "Give the remake a chance" clearly writes checks with their mouth their ass can't cash.

Man, I couldn't disagree more with you about Keanu and Rennie acting habilities, but I have to agree about Wise as it is obvious he was a genius. I understand your love for the original, really, and the way you respect it, it's actors and it's director. But, really, it's a great movie who could spare another great one, but updated and more accessible to younger audiences. Keeping the core of the story but adding and modernizing it. The original will still there, it's a classic. I don't think The Departed diminished the value of Infernal Affairs. Or that King Kong diminished the value of the original. I liked War of the Worlds. I don't see a real problem in it as it's obvious that most movies out there are not remakes, so the original production still going on. I don't know if you can comment about it, but I would like to ask if you know if the draft of the script you read is the one that was re-writted by Scott Derrickson. Because I know he re-wrote it and Keanu said in an interview a few things that go against some details you disclosed about the draft you had. So, if you can answer that, I would be very thankful. Another thing, reading your review, taking aside your tottal disgust about the changes, and I know that it had a big influence on the way you described things, I was really interested in the story you was telling, in that almost "original" plot. Tell me, if you would judge it forgetting about the original movie, as a stand alone, do you think it could become a good movie? Thanks in advance.

"Not many people have seen it". What-thefuck-ever. Is it on DVD? Yep. Is it on TV? Yep. How on Earth is a classic movie being old or current audience ignorance JUSTIFICATION for a remake? What, we need a marketing campaign to alert people to such a cool movie and then give them what generally (outside of a few exceptions) is an imitation and secondary film in both senses of the word. It was ALWAYS be true that "AWESOME SPECIAL EFFECTS" will get better, but that just creates a revolving door of remakes yet is not justification - it's the tail wagging the dog. If only 1 in 500 people have seen it, do what they did with The Exorcist and give it a limited theatrical re-release, at least that's more honest than saying it's a great movie people should know about then giving them a different movie. Especially if you change the key plot mechanics, as Morgoth said. I wouldn't be so much of a 'hater' if at least it WAS more of a carbon copy that didn't essentially invert the message. I'd rather go see Wall-e. And no, I don't hate Canoo-ey. I'd be happier if they were just "inspired by" and all the names and title was changed. You are blasting people who have read the script or don't like Keanu, telling them not to prejudge without seeing the movie... yet you are prejudging as well. Just 100% positively. There's not a single concern in all your posts. That said... it is curious you know a load of facts -- that it is will take place DC though shot in Vancouver, is not solely environmental, debuted in Amsterdam with a great Keanu performance, you have Gort concept art... I'm sure you will just say you are an uber-fan and this is "research." But it is curious. And whether or not Keanu is as good of an actor as the original... he has zero MYSTERY, which is a main component. Yes, Keanu will have his own take, but that is why some are up in arms. :-)

"Jerk"...oooooooohhhh...I'm soooo scared. What was the subtleties of the original movie if you're so smart? Did you even read the story, "Farewell To the Master" the original film was based on? The new plot has resembles "Godzilla Vs. the Smog Monster" more than the '51 version. In the original story, we were a threat to the outer worlds as Earth was rapidly discovering the possibilities of nuclear power and that Earth's use of aggression would not be tolerated. In the new "plot" Klatuu is all upset that we're destroying our planet and he's going to destroy it for us. Why would he or any other alien race give a fuck? Did he create the Earth? Is he Slardi Bartfast? No. Go read the book. RedHHades; yes, it was the Derrikson version. If you get a chance; watch "Sailor of the King." with Jeffery Hunter and Michael Rennie. Its based on Forrester's "Brown On Resolution." Though, Rennie has a smaller part; he's outstanding in it. He was also the captain of the "Titanic" in the "Time Tunnel" pilot as well. Another small part; but excellent when he's on the screen. As for a stand alone movie; no. I wouldn't go see this. It just doesn't interest me. The main problem in it is that there isn't the human interaction the original had. Plus, some of the logic in the story doesn't make sense especially with the "Mr. Wu(Or "Mr. Whoa" as one poster nicely added.) character. I'm also burned out on the dysfunctional family syndrome as well as the funny, talking animal movies.

Thanks for answering Uncapie. As you know, I disagree with a lot of your opinions, but I respect it and I respect the love you feel for the original movie (although that's exactly what makes you so biased). I am really interested in this remake and would like to hear a fair opinion about it, and I know this site won't be the ideal place to get it. :) BTW, thanks for the suggestions of movies, I will try to find "Sailor of the King" , never saw it. I have nothing against Michael Rennie, as I said, I think he was a good actor. But, IMO, not an outstanding one. I am really curious about the take Keanu will have on the character. Although I know you don't like him, I think he is a very interesting actor who has an unique take about his work and characters. His choices are really uneven and sometimes you scratch your head trying to understand what the hell of vision the guy has about the world, but, for me, that only adds to his appeal. I would (dare) suggest you to watch him in The Last Time I Commited Suicide, The Gift and A Scanner Darkly. The Ted/Neo vision most people have about him is really unfair when put in perspective with his whole career, mostly when facing his independent movies. As for the new TDTESS version, well, we will have to wait to see how all those changes will work on screen, and that will really depends of Scott Derrickson. I think we have very little from him yet to make a fair judgement and I am hoping his vision will surprise us. Call me optimist, whatever. But the story you described in your review looked interesting to me. Anyway, we are only starting here, next week: the trailer!

The original focused on weapons being destroyed. If the focus has changed to "Nature" (which is a bad ideal as others have stated) shouldn't a power plant or a polluting factory be targeted? Is baseball that dangerous? Can we not enjoy our hot dogs and lemon drink?

...because they CAN. It's that simple. As much as the cynic in me wants to believe that Hollywood has run out of original ideas (which it no doubtedly HAS), the truth of the matter is that the studios OWN these properties and they will revisit them, rework them and ruin them ad infinitum. How does one explain the FOURTH remake of "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers". Did we need another remake? Was the original broken? Or even the great sequel? No. What about King Kong? The original was a classic but lacked box-office credibility. So it was redone in '76. Presto. Made a star of Jessica Lange. But put it in the hands of Peter Jackson -- a multi-Oscar winning director -- and the studio has its first chance to actually recoupe on a 60 year-old property. There IS something to be said about selling these movies to a new generation. The hysteria of our times was the motivation for re-doing "Invasion"...a cash in on fear...just like monster movies in the '50s capitalizing on the nuclear threat...or spy movies in the '60 capitalizing on the Red Scare...or horror movies in the '70s capitalizing on...well...ticket receipts. Now the horror flicks are being remade...and are, ironically, less scary than the originals because film-making has become a bean-counter's artform...not a director or producer's artform. Some food for thought: James Bond's "Dr. No" is the most remade movie in the history of cinema. The Broccoli family has remade it 21 times.

i'd agree that the same damn bond film has been made over and over, except the first three dr. no, from russia with love, and goldfinger, and the fifth on her majesty's secret service, they were tight little thrillers, which followed their novels down pat. but the rest of the 16 are the same shtick with different coatings.
