As much as I love Brad Bird, I think Nemo is the best movie Pixar has done, and Stanton tells one hell of a story. Animated or Live action? Who cares? Bring on Deja Thoris! (PG-13 AT LEAST, PLEASE!)

Hmm...not G rated...that opens up all kinds of f'ed up possibilities. The PIXAR geeks will have to bone up on their Soft Body Dynamics...wait...did I just say "bone"?

You know, a lot of people felt the same way when they heard Favreau was doing Iron Man - that turned out pretty well. I'm just saying there's no way of really telling if someone's going to make a bad movie until they - you know, actually make the movie.

Heh, I love that Carter is getting just as much attention as Wall-E. Frazetta and Frank Cho... That's what John Carter should look like! We all want the true (R) it deserves, but please no lower than a (PG-13). I got's to have some damn fine and bloody Harryhausen white ape fights!

I was wondering why Harry in his current Wall*e Avatar didn't just look fat, but kind of balloon-y. Now, that they've brought up Neoteny I get it- It's what an adult would look like with the body build of a baby. Now I can't wait to see Wall*e, as that's just fascinating. But I guess all chicks are fat chicks in the future, then...

The shopping cart sequence did it for me, the zoom losing its focus for half a second. I've seen it in BG - as hailed by Stanton himself - but the first time I remember seeing the lose-focus-even-though-it's-CG I was on Firefly. Can anyone tell me if it was done that well before then?

Seriously? I rather they tell an incredibly awesome story than worry if they'll show tits and gore. Not even Conan had nudity and the gore was even less than LOTR, yet that was as much an adult male fantasy movie as any out there.
Funny coincidence...

Remember those trailers that played before Toy Story 2? The ones that had no dialogue? Those had me so excited for the film. Then along came Trailer 2. And there was a wise crackin' side-kick and a love interest. God, that movie didn't suck but it had soooo much potential to be better and even Pixar level.
Conan did have nudity...
by Sledge Hammer
Jun 25th, 2008
07:35:24 AM
...quite a bit actually. There was slave girl nudity from the girl given to Conan, there was the sex scene with the Witch, there was the sex scene with Valeria, there was the girl being sacrificed to Rexor's snake, there was the orgy scene, and that's just off the top of my head...and if you think the gore was less than LOTR then maybe you should watch it again, or perhaps for the first time as it appears you have no fucking idea what you're talking about. Unless your idea of Conan is the much reviled pg rated sequel, or the even worse cable tv show.
seriously Capone, don't take this the wrong way...

but PLEASE get someone to PROOFREAD before throwing this stuff up - it took two or three goes to get some of the sentences due to typos and one or two I still haven't quite figured out yet!

Having said that, GREAT INTERVIEW! The Wall-E I could care less about (if I tried) but that John Carter news fills me with a warmth not unlike that which I might encounter after consuming a certain beverage common to the Czech republic - in other words BRING IT!!

This NEEDS to be done right!

I'd be OK with a PG John Carter

The John Carter series was written for kids - most of us would have discovered (read) these books as kids, so why SHOULDN'T the films be for kids too?

I can think of dozens of PG films (SciFi or not) that are perfectly acceptable - no, GREAT - and nudity or excessive violence would just be a distraction.

I didn't get a hard-on for Carter's woman, reading these books, or from the violence. Why should the movies be any different?

Hollywood fears the cock. I don´t know what´s the problem with showing genitals in a movie, but i´m Eurotrash, so what do i know?
John Carter could be done as PG-13

as long as Pixar is able to bring the look of the film in line with the works of the Joe Jusko and Michael Whelen paintings -Much prefered over the Frank Frazetta and Boris Vallejo ones- sure the nudity would be gone, But they could use costumes similar to ROTJ's Slave Girl Leia, the violence level could be done in line with LOTR...this would not make for a truely faithful adaptation, but it would be better than a movie animated in traditional pixar style.........

Oh please do it right! Who cares about boobs. The real essence of John Carter is BATTLE. To get the story right, you have to have the adventure, the action, the fantastic, and then make it all meaningful to our relatable heroes. Mr. Stanton, I have 100% faith in you.

Where's the love for CONAN THE DESTROYER
by JIMBOCOP

Yes, I know BARBARIAN was the better film by a country mile and I love to have seen what John Milius would have done with a full trilogy (as he wanted), but, BUT, deep deep down... anyone who's read Howard's original Conan stories (they're not so well written and, let's face it, pretty racist) knows that DESTROYER is actually closer to the spirit of that pulp he wrote than the first one.

John Carter books not for kids

The Barsoom books were decidedly not written or published for kids, just as the Tarzan novels were not. All of these were serialized in adult magazines and published in hardcover as adult novels, although historically discovered and enjoyed more often than not by older kids and adolescents. All great stuff. It generally pisses me off when anyone dismisses the Tarzan books as "children's books" when they aren't, and the same goes for the Martian books. Don't get me wrong, I write as a specialist in children's and young adult literature and have no problem with such labels or categories, as long as they are applied accurately. Many of the books conventionally viewed as classics for kids (TREASURE ISLAND, KIDNAPPED, GULLIVER'S TRAVELS, CALL OF THE WILD, and I could go on for days) were originally published for adults because children's literature as a field did not yet exist. It's all about the labelling and many works fall on both sides of the fence.
Awesome.

Are you afraid of a Princess?
by SnootyBoots

Burroughs wrote 11 Mars novels, the first is called A PRINCESS OF MARS and the last JOHN CARTER OF MARS. So why is the first movie in a proposed series going with the title of the last book and not the first? Because demographers see the core audience for the movie being young males and they're afraid that young males wont go to see a movie with the word "Princess" in the title. Of course, with a huge movie like this all humanity will be assaulted by vast amounts of blatant propaganda well before it's released and know full well when entering the Theater that here's a movie based on a book called A PRINCESS OF MARS. Changing the title just makes me worried that even the good folks at Pixar will take other liberties with the book, making JOHN CARTER OF MARS only the latest of all adaptations of Burroughs work to be unfaithful to it's source. And if the title scares people so much, how about UNDER THE MOONS OF MARS, which was the title Burroughs used when he was writing the book. Save JOHN CARTER for the 11th movie.
Andrew Stanton is perfect for John Carter!

The man knows his science fiction and he's a great storyteller. Alot of people talk about Brad Bird and I love his work, but after Wall-E hits big, people will be talking about Stanton just as much. He deserves it after Finding Nemo and Wall-E. I'm interested in anything new he does and now we get a John Carter film that should be amazing as well.
