That's right, I said albums and not CDs. I'm admitting I'm an older guy, ok? I remember the good ol' days of vinyl and needles and scratching records and then having to go out and re-buy them all over again. And man, George Carlin's albums were always just a joy to sit and listen to. And to pick up that needle and move it right back to a particular spot to re-hear a section of a monologue all over again. And it was a sign of his talent that it never got tiring.

What can you say? The man was genius through and through. He cut through bullshit like no other with laser precision and even when he appeared in movies his entire "no bullshit" persona just radiated as well. Just seeing him give another actor on screen THAT certain look, which only he could summon up, would totally crack me up.

So RIP, George. The joy you gave so many of us, as well as your impact and comedic legacy, will not be soon forgotten.

After I read that he died I thought of his last HBO special "It's Bad for Ya." He does this hysterical rendition of an after funeral gathering of family and friends that go on and on about how he was proud of them and smiling down from heaven. Well, Carlin isn't smiling down from anywhere (I hope). I tend to think he just passed on and is gone. I'll miss the crazy old fuck, I was hoping to get the chance to see him someday. At least I finally wised up and understood the value of his brand of comedy. Thanks, George.

My friends and I were going to see him live about a month and a half ago in Vegas but got side-tracked and did'nt go. We said "we'll see him when he comes back to Southern Cal." If I knew then what I know now. R.I.P sir. Thank you for the decades of laughter and thought provoking. Your CD's will always be in my listening library.

Goddammin I'm going to miss George Carlin. He was a funny motherfucker. He made you laugh and think and he cut though all the bullshit that society shoves at us day in and day out. And he did it for the fans, the guy was always out on tour. He pushed buttons and talked about things in a controversial, yet funny way. And the guy kept writing new material all the time, when he could have just put together a "greatest bits" routine and just let the audience treat him like a fucking jukebox (thank you Bill Hicks). He was also the comedian I could watch with my old man and we both could laugh our asses off. Going to miss you around here George.

AM/FM was the first comeday album by anyone not named Bill Cosby I ever heard, and I was hooked. Divorce Game, Al Sleet Your Hippy-Dippy Weather Man, Shoot. It was greatness. Then Occupation: Foole and On the Road. Those were the only ones I actually owned, but I heard much more from him over the years. Yeah, 71 is not exactly in your prime and I'm sure those were probably 71 pretty hard-ridden years, but especially coming right on the heels of Russert and Winston. Shit. Death, take a damn holiday already, will ya! I hope they honor George's wishes...

... he never backed down, stood up against censorship, and sometimes seemed to me the only voice of reason I was ever hearing. No one else has ever made me laugh so hard, so long, and so CONSISTENTLY as George Carlin. He not only entertained, but made me THINK, and challenged the way I thought. I can honestly say he made me a person who asks questions instead of just accepting what is told to me.

George always talked about how we use language . . . how certain words have certain connotations, and how even subtle differences in tone and inflection can manipulate meaning. He was a master of language, and ever word he said was surgically prepared for what he wanted to say. To a man like that, I can only say this: "I can never thank you enough."

Cheers, George.

George Carlin was one of my heroes and role models and even though I have never met the man or even watched him perform live, hearing of his passing hit me pretty hard. It is truly sad to see such a pioneer of comedy leave us. Somewhere, right now, Jesus is covering his ears as George bullshits his way into Heaven.

"Albums" is perfectly acceptable, as it merely means "collection." Like a photo album, or those comics albums from Europe. A CD is just an album in a different form, like cassettes and LPs before it. Hell, even a full-length MP3 purchase from iTunes or Amazon is an album. No worries, mate.

I live in the south. Everyone around me listens to Jeff Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Guy and thinks they are the kings of comedy. Fuck the south. I grew up with a mother who let me listen to Richard Pryor albums after I saw him in Superman 3. I discovered George Carlin when he was in Bill and Ted. He reminded me to always think for myself and that it was OK to laugh at anything(even rape). Living in the bible belt,I've quoted that mans comedy more times than I can count, and it always made me smile when someone told me I was going to hell for siding with Carlin. I don't normally swear that much, but it seems appropriate here.

I guess I'll add him to the list of great dead comedians populated by the likes of Richard Pryor, Bill Hicks, and Mitch Hedberg.

While we're at it, really, neither Doug Stanhope or Patton Oswalt should be mentioned in the same sentence as Richard Pryor and George Carlin. Let alone inferring they could actually somehow "carry on" for those guys. NO ONE will. We'll just have to start fresh in that regard. New material, as it were. :)

Got into his work a year or so back (late I know) through another forum, but I devoured his albums and frequently made me laugh out loud when listening on the bus to work.

Sad on hearing about his death, I browsed wiki to see his other accomplishments. This was part of his entry...

"His most usual topic was (in his words) humanity's "bullshit", which might include murder, genocide, war, rape, corruption, religion and other aspects of human civilization. His delivery frequently treated these subjects in a misanthropic and nihilistic fashion, such as in his statement during the Life is Worth Losing show: "I look at it this way... For centuries now, man has done everything he can to destroy, defile, and interfere with nature: clear-cutting forests, strip-mining mountains, poisoning the atmosphere, over-fishing the oceans, polluting the rivers and lakes, destroying wetlands and aquifers... so when nature strikes back, and smacks him on the head and kicks him in the nuts, I enjoy that. I have absolutely no sympathy for human beings whatsoever. None. And no matter what kind of problem humans are facing, whether it's natural or man-made, I always hope it gets worse."

What a guy. He will be missed, but like Stan Winston most of the entertainment industry will shrug in apathy. A shame.

George Carlin, My Man Givin’ It To The Man
by psychedelic
Jun 23rd, 2008
04:48:04 AM
What can I say? What can I say? George Carlin is one of the greatest influences on me. Not only artistically, but in the way I think and view the world. I repeat: think and view the world. The older I get, the more it seems like he’s right. I saw him live four times, got his autograph and shook his hand at a book signing, and own almost every work he released. George Carlin is HUGE to me, a giant, someone I’ve admired, relished, enjoyed, cherished, and laughed with hysterically almost my entire life— and I’m talking since my age was in single digits. It’s always been a goal of mine to swear as good as he did. Fuck, yeah.

Yet I don’t feel sad in his passing. I’m sorry to see him gone, and… I take it back. I’m sad I’ll never get to see him live again. Awe fuck, I’m sad. But I want to celebrate his work. I want to give everyone in the world copies of his HBO specials and comedy albums, throw his books on every doorstep. He may have projected bitterness in his later years, but he never left a bad aftertaste with audiences. It was audiences and live performance that was his greatest drug. He could never get enough. His performance skill reached sublime levels damn few ever reach. He could say mouthfuls almost anyone else would stumble and plunder through with a musicality uniquely his own.

For all his rebel rousing and anti-establishment thinking, he was married to the same woman for more than thirty years and had one daughter. He seemed to reach a balance few ever achieve. From my point of view, he is one of the great American thinkers. He’s right up there with Mark Twain. George Carlin deserves recognition as a fantastic writer as well as one of the greatest comedians who ever lived. It is joy that his live performances are captured for generations to come.

So I end this with THE words that are most divinely appropriate.

Shit, piss, fuck, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker, and tits. Cheese tits.

So so so so so very FUCKING sad

...I'm not complaining. I just wish so many people weren't dead. Like my Grandpa...died last October. Didn't get much of a TB here on AICN but he was pretty cool. Came to America from Norway. His whole family were ship captains but he got seasick, didn't want to be away half the year, and frankly...I think he was a little afraid of drowning. So anyway, he traveled to Brooklyn at 14 and became a plumber. You would think there would be one or two career options between "ship captain" and "plumber in Brooklyn". But what do I know. Goddam it's early for this...

I'm going to nominate 2008 for year that the Rapture began. So many greats gone in such a short time that I think the big guy is trying to give us a heads up. In all honesty we should have seen this coming. Russert taken when anyone who works at Fox News would have worked just as well. Winston gone yet the people who do the effects for Sci-Fi movie of the week are probably alive and kicking. Ledger goes but Winehouse gets to live? Now you take George Carlin when any number of no-talented hacks would have worked just as well....fuck off! Hmmm...First the overly questioning host of Meet the Press, and then the other man in the world brave enough to say 'America is finished' on national television and mean it. And both of heart problems, the CIA's favorite cause of death.

Mr. Carlin would have wanted me to question the reality surrounding his death, and it seems kinda odd that the people asking serious questions about government both died of heart problems.

In all seriousness, George Carlin was a fucking hero, in fucking bold print. The fact that I have no problem saying fuck whenever I want, and that we get to see the word fuck on this webpage is because guys like George Carlin stood up and said 'BULLSHIT. I call bullshit on this.'

George Carlin is absolutely right, Life is worth Losing. I just wish he'd have stuck around a bit longer. But when my kids are old enough (around 10 or so) I'm going to play them 'A Place for My Stuff'. And all my tapes of Shining Time Station. Fuck, Mr. Conductor...I'll miss you.

Damn, what a way to walk out the door on your way to work. FOX5 flashes his picture up on the screen and all I can think is Fuck...Carlin has bought it. Not three minutes later Howard Stern starts the show with the bad news and some old tape. That was nice. I met him once about ten years ago at the theater I used to work for. A very nice, warm, GENUINE person. Sad to see him go. And if, perchance, he is standing Judgement right now, I'll bet God is having one helluv a good laugh. Hopefully George won't burn...

I don't have any personal memories of George Carlin, like the AICN crew, or many others of you. I never got to see his stand-up live. If it hadn't been for my Mom's high-school teacher recognizing her smart-ass nature, she would never have known about him. That's as personal as it gets on one level. On another level, he has been one of the keenest minds and most brilliant comedians. How often has he elaborated hilariously about things to which we only give a passing thought? How many times has he made us think? Sadly, we live in a world where the comedy scene appears to be lacking his influence. All we have now are endless pop-culture references, and ridiculous non-sequitorial anecdotes from the likes of Dane Cook. Shortly before his death, Richard Pryor was asked in an interview who is the comedian today who makes him laugh, who's doing the kind of comedy he used to. Without hesitation, he said 'Dave Chappelle.' To me, the saddest thing about the news of George Carlin's death is that he has no successor. We are bereft of his observation, his consternation, his unpredictable wit, the small imperceptible facial expression, gestures, words, and screams from 50 years of performing before grateful audiences; we are bereft of his thought, his verve, his ability to speak with the vitriol that we all feel sometimes for the things we know are ridiculous, crazy, and just plain bullshit in this modern world. I have no personal stories of George Carlin. Just jokes I memorized because they're so good. I log hours of laughing to him like some of you log hours playing video games. I'm just an audience member, you know. And, still, this is going to be a hard day at work.

[Solemnly]: "Ah, yeah, Sam, poor Sam is gone... Lenny, yes, he's gone too, now George, poor George is gone... [Angrily] Cook? That mutherfucker's NEVER gonna die!" I memorized hours and hours of Carlin from around '74 through the late 80s HBO specials. IMO, no one funnier has ever picked up a mic and taken the stage. And I'm the biggest Steve Martin fan on the planet, but Martin was more of a performance artist than a true comedian. Carlin's routines were just pure genius in verbal form. Rest in peace, you cranky MF'er!

and I would memorize his routines, too, along with my older brother. He was a classic combination of substance and style; no one could deliver a string of words like he could. And yes, I would cringe thru some of his material, partly out of the fact that at least some of what he said was uncomfortably true. So, the rest of you want to believe there's nothing waiting for us after we're gone, that all we have to look forward to is lies and bigger bites out of this shit sandwich that we call life, and hope that there are people like George to tell us what's out there? Me, I'm hoping that God will forgive him, and realize he was doing the best he could with what he had. Thanks, George, for the hours I spent listening to you, and may you truly rest in peace.

I'm also pretty sure he was the first comedian i had ever heard on record and without him i don't think i could have fully appreciated Bill Hicks later in life. bleh this sucks. one of my favorite lines from his acts: "About this time, someone is telling you to get on the plane. "Get on the plane. Get on the plane." I say, "fuck you, I'm getting IN the plane! IN the plane! Let Evil Knievel get ON the plane! I'll be in here with you folks in uniform! I heard GC back when I was 12. He introduced me to comedy. I heard his 7 dirty words at age 13. I bought his album "On The Road" at age 14 and still believe it to be the funniest thing I have ever heard. At age 14 I was recruited by one of them gay drama people to do humorous interpretations for a competition (yes competitive drama). I did GC's Kids from that album. My life never was the same. I wound up entering into theater, and took a shot at writing and performing standup. I was never very good at it. But I did it for several years and made a little cash and got to see some places I wouldn't have otherwise. I have since changed careers and became a computer nerd and haven't regretted it. My life has also changed to the extent that I probably oppose many of his views and his language. Still I never can't fit the mold so many think I should be as a person of faith. For that I still give thanks to Mr. Carlin. He changed my life permanently.

. . .as smart and as witty and as brilliant as George Carlin. A few years ago my wife and I were driving home and we put "Class Clown" on the CD player in the car. Well, that was almost a mistake. At one point we were laughing so hard (at something that we had heard a thousand times) that I almost got into an accident. I had to pull over at the next rest stop and get it out of my system before continuing the road trip. George Carlin was my first exposure to stand-up comedy. ...was my first exposure to George as a kid. We didn't get a VCR until 1985, so I recorded the audio with a boom box next to the TV. Some thought he had become too bitter with his "Life is Worth Losing" HBO special, bordering on having drunk the same poison that Dennis Miller did post 2001, but Dennis was always a conservative asswipe and 2001 was just his excuse for finally coming out of the closet. George's rage at the failings of those of his generation to retain their spines was and is legitimate. We've lost a great voice of truth, but we still have OUR voices and it's time to speak.

Bill Cosby and Jerry Seinfeld are now the last two "great" comedians walking the earth, and Seinfeld's on the low end of the "great" list. Cosby started to give up when his kid died and purposely keeps quieter and Seinfeld's bajillions blunted his edge. Chris Rock and Eddie Murphy were hilarious but more in the shadow of Pryor than anything else. Plus those two wanted to be actors more than comics--and Murphy turned his back on stand-up 20 years ago. This is a fucked-up way to start the week. I will miss the hell out of George Carlin.

Will 2008 be known as the year everyone died??? We're not quite halfway through the year, and another Giant has passed. Last week Mr. Winston, Mr. Russert the week before...Sydney Pollack just before that..

I'm aging myself, but I remember George Carlin from his early appearences on The Ed Sullivan Show, when he looked like the copywriter of an ad agency in the corner of the office, making jokes at everything. I played Class Clown till the needle practically wore through. Was one of the few comedians I saw live on stage (The Fisher Theater in Detroit). He changed through the years, but unlike comedians who couldn't weather the change of era, he remained relevant, and most importantly, remained true to his voice.

I would give my left nut to be present at his memorial, because every comedian, EVERY GODDAMN comedian owes a tip of the hat (and a toke) to George.

I was hooked. He was my favorite comedian. There will never be another one like him. He may be mostly known for the 7 dirty words but his knowledge of the English language was amazing. And "Back In Town" maybe one of the best stand up albums ever. Capital Punishment and State Prison Farms maybe 2 of the funniest and most fucked up bits anyone has ever come up with. I was lucky to see him a few years ago and comedy will never be the same without him.

But honestly, I thought Carlin was at his most insightful when he simply shared a brilliant thought and/or observation. When he didn't have that, he'd go for the vulgarity. He was one of the pioneers of "if the joke isn't going over, just be vulgar to save it."

While I dont discount that as a clever gimmick, I stop short of calling it brilliant - because it isn't. His idol Danny Kaye would have been the first to tell him he was doing it wrong.

I still take a moment to mourn our loss here - because this guy, even if you bleep and blot out his vulgarities, still had some very important things to say, and said them in extremely witty ways. He transcended the role of court jester and became one of the best social/political commentators in this nation's history. Yes, I said that. Thomas Paine, Mark Twain, and George Carlin - cut from the same mold. The problem is that Paine and Twain didn't have to use vulgarities and profanities in order to get the reader's attention and hold onto it. I suspect that Carlin wouldn't have needed to either, but it was his profanities that made him a household name, and once that icon was entrenched, he had no choice but to embrace it.

But seriously - its not witty, clever, or brilliant to use profanity. Seven year old kids can do it every bit as good as you can - as Carlin could. If you want to emulate him, then look beyond his profane crutches and examine what he is actually saying. Its pretty heady stuff. Unfortunately, the vulgarisms serve only to fog his commentary, and the tiny-brains among us get lost in it and walk into the walls. They never really 'get' what Carlin was trying to say.

RIP

When Sam Kinison came along I thought, great! When George Carlin dies it won't hurt so much. Because I could see the evolution developing in Sam slowly toward his own brand of the political social commentary that George Carlin dispensed with well. Then when Sam Died in a car wreck I knew it was going to be over soon, eventually. Denis Leary was a great candidate to fill the void but goddammit, he went Hollywood and I learned I couldn't depend on him to turn out a great piece of social asshole-ripping every two to three years. Now the moment has come and I'm profoundly saddened to think that unless some miracle happens, we're doomed to settle for comedians that can't give us anything better than the same old fucking shit. "Hey, y'ever walk into your bedroom and wonder who left the closet door open?" SAve George's DNA, put his head in a block of ice, ANYTHING to give us hope that we can bring back the awesomeness that's never going to be seen again. I heard about Carlin's passing last night when I got home from work. Being a huge fan of his for many years, it hit me harder than I expected. I admired George for his audacity, his wit, his finely tuned bullshit detector, his crazy expressions, and his heart. Because underneath all his comical pomp and circumstance, he seemed like a guy who'd be cool to grab a beer with.

Plus, as an atheist, he was one of the few well-liked public figures who challenged doctrine. He wasn't mean about it, or demeaning, but he definitely skewered the general assumption that there's a god. I loved this about him. He also skewered "Save the Earth" people, one of the funniest comic bits I've ever heard from anybody. Plus he played Rufus in "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" and Cardinal Glick in "Dogma."

Thanks for being so great and so deeply, rip-roaringly funny, George. And thanks for not giving a fuck what others thought about you.

Yeah.

No current successor to Carlin
by finky089
Jun 23rd, 2008

There is no one today that is really a direct successor to Carlin's brand of humor.

Sure, the guy waned a bit in his twilight years, but so do most of the greats. For almost his entire career he was way out in front of the "edge" of popular comedy. His insights and use of language (both "dirty" and not) were incomparable among stand-ups contemporaries. Only in the later 90's did America start seeing increasing numbers of comedians who took their humor to "the edge", making it more "raw" and covering topics or using language that was previously considered "socially extreme". Now everybody does it. But when you go back and watch Carlin's older stuff (I'm most familiar with his 80's stuff and the early 90's gem, Jammin in New York) you see just how far he sails above all of today's comics.

George Carlin, you've given this world a great many laughs, often to tears. And now, we shed a collective tear back to you for all the laughs you gave us.

Rest In Peace, you funny fucker.

I think the first George Carlin HBO special I ever saw was "Playing with Your Head". As a teenager the title alone was worth renting. In the early/mid 80's I somehow got very interested in stand up comedy. I knew comedians like most people knew bands or music. HBO exposed me to so much, but not more than the membership I had at the local video store, where I could rent 5 movies for four bucks. As it would turn out, George Carlin is the measuring stick for all comedians since. And while my interest in comedians today is not what it used to be, I will always reflect on a guy that I always wanted to meet, and someone I am happy to say I got to see perform twice during my adult life. Like many people posting, I always felt Carlin was a wordsmith, and the fact that he could shift from the political, to the mundane, to a fart joke, makes him the very best. "People say you can't joke about rape, picture Porky Pig raping Elmer Fudd." Me and a buddy would gather infront of the TV for new HBO specials, What am I doing in New Jersey, Jammin in New York are excellent. His humor stands the test of time. Jon Stewart once referred to a comedy holy trinity...Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor and George Carlin. Who's left that can be considered really great? Chris Rock maybe? There are not a lot of people out there that do what Carlin did. Sure you can use dirty words all day, but it seems to me that nobody is crafting jokes anymore. The "art" is slowly being taken out. In a way it's par for the course with life today. Why spend time making something, when you can throw something together and people will gladly fill it into their gullets. Today I feel loss, as someone I really enjoyed hearing point out the ridicilous side of human nature, is gone. Today I'll be sure to listen to his routines and have my own tribute to who in my opinion was the best comedian of my era.

No doubt one of the most influential comics ... ever. I will miss him greatly. I know most people here like to shit on Kevin Smith's movies, but I thought he was the very best part of Jersey Girl. Could actually cry right now and it more than the fact that the legend is gone and that I've always seen him as the greatest. its that from the very first time i saw him i completely connected with him because his way of looking at things and analyzing them are almost the same as mine and with that he helped me hone my critical thinking, learn about topics i hadn't heard about before, not be afraid to express my view even though they might go against the majority and of course he made me laugh. over and over and over even if I've listen to the same joke time after time. such a shame i could never see him live, it always seemed like there might be a chance in the future. he was around, and in tip top comedic shape, for so long that it seemed as if he'd always be here with new material and new specials.

I first discovered him in Jr. High (what they used to call middle school in the Dark Ages of the 1970s) on the Johnny Carson show. He did a great send-up of the news.

"Police fired over the heads of rioters this afternoon. No one in the crowd was hurt but 24 people were killed on the second floor of the building across the street."

A friend later bought the lp "On The Road" and we spent many hours after school flipping through comic books, listening to Carlin and laughing our asses off.

Rest in peace, George and thank you for the laughs.

George Carlin - infinity....and beyond. I did a stand up routine during the Senior Class play in 1971, dressed as Euell Gibbons (look it up, youngsters), but most definitely borrowing heavily from George Carlin. I knew I was (a) killing the audience and (b) in BIG trouble when the principal came racing down the aisle to get me off stage. I think it was the line about eating a teacher's pussy perhaps. I still hear about that routine at reunions. I credit much of my weird sense of humor and absurd take on the world directly to George Carlin. Last Saturday, my band was playing a show and some drunk in the back yelled out "Georgia!", to which I replied "What? Is that bitch here?" Damn, damn, damn...this sucks high on tit.

The thing is, he lived his life the way he wanted to, doing the things he was good at and enjoyed doing. Sure, some of it probably shortened his years but he got quality in exchange for quantity. Most people exist, he lived. People talk about how out there and weird he could be, but to me he always seemed so grounded in truth. Cutting through the bullshit, mass accepted delusions and platitudes that constitute the daily lives in self deluded polite society. The world owes the man thanks for inspiring generations to question all and think for themselves. I remember him often saying some variation on "I'm not telling you what to think about this, just reporting the facts." He always made me think of the royal jesters, allowed to tell the King or any one else the hard truths in an irreverent way. Cutting through the lies to keep things in perspective. And funny as hell while doing it

"But if you're uncritically just going to accept most of the shit he says seriously that makes you a fucking moron!"- Johnno That's the difference between George Carlin and his fans. Part of what he inspired was to not accept uncritically anything at face value including what Carlin said. These are jokes he is telling, not serious recommendations. As annoying as A personality alpha male types are I am sure Carlin did not intend to brainwash his fans to start shooting them on sight, for example. You and I are actually making the same point, but I think I was misunderstood some how.

If you think Carlin used vulgarity to "save" a failing joke, then you are the one who doesn't get him.

He used language to challenge people and make them uncomfortable. Every Carlin shoe I've ever seen was opened with an intentionally shocking and vulgar line to set the tone for the night. He was there to make you laugh and to think but it was going to be on his terms.

He didn't use profanity because he thought he "had" to. That was his voice and the language he knew. He was proud of his "7 words" bit and being quoted in the supreme court obscenity case. One of his goals as he got older was to be 90 saying those words on the Vegas strip.

He didn't want to be Danny Kaye. He started his career as a "clean" comedian and hated it. He felt disingenuous trying to make people laugh and think without using words that would offend them.

I agree that a lot of his insights are lost in his profanities but that was just how he wanted and that is one of the things that made him the greatest ever.

I watched Carlin's recent special "IT'S BAD FOR YA" "It's all bullshit folks, and it's bad for ya..." I never heard a harder truth from him. I started noticing Carlin back at "Jammin in New York", and that performance became my gospel for the next decade... I really identified with his views on Golf, Prisons ("Everybody says, 'BUILD MORE PRISONS! BUILD MORE PRISONS! -- but not here...' 'When the prisoners escape, what do you think they're gonna do? HANG AROUND??" and yes, even Death ("If there's anything I can do..." "Come over and paint my garage!") I will miss this man greatly, he was like a second father to me. And yes, Fuck You George, I always thought you'd be here...

As I was watching his most recent special with a friend, my friend pointed out that, yes, everything he's saying is brilliant, and true -- but that the next morning, people would wake up, and go back to doing the same old shit in their drudgery lives. Which is true. It's why I try to rail against the system just a little bit every day, and I think of him when doing it. He inspired me more than my real dad did.

Jesus. This sucks. The guy deserves credit for a lot of different things, but who I'll remember him the most as is Rufus. I've heard talk about a "Bill and Ted 3" on the net for a few years now, and although I don't think it would have had the original actors anyway, it's still a shame to now know Carlin will never reprise his role as Rufus--and Rufus stole the fucking show. Anyhow, aside from being hilarious in those Kevin Smith movies, I also loved his stand-up. He had to have been one of the most uncompromising comedians of all time. Nice story, Quint. I've always wondered if he was a nice guy or not, I guess now I finally know. RIP, George. Afterthought: Does anybody remember that show he had on FOX (I think it was FOX)? Entitled "The George Carlin Show" or something? I'll have to google it, I'm sure there is an IMDB page for it.

Holy shit but I did the EXACT same thing. Ripped off Carlin's jokes and made all my friends laugh their asses off (back when not everyone had cable!). Well that and my relative mastery over armpit farts (which Carlin also admitted an early mastery of this difficult and often pursued but rarely perfected art).

A genius of Carlin's statue comes along rarely and we're all the better for the experience. A show I saw mentioned how the 20th century would be very different without Joe Lewis...I think it would also have been very different without comedians like George Carlin. One of my personal heros and yet another to be greatly remembered and greatly missed.

That was from his last special, "It's Bad For You." You know what's really bad for us? A world without Carlin. Quint, I had the chance to interview George on the phone myself once, and he was great. It was the worst interview I had ever done, because for the first time ever I was intimidated by a celebrity. Intimidated by his intellect. He was cool, and treated me like an equal, and because of him, and him alone it was a great listen. What a loss. In a time where we need our most brilliant minds, they are all leaving us. Leaving us in the hands of dumbass criminal bozos. RIP George. You have two months in the rolodex starting now.

But that was part of his genius, there was alot of truth in what he talked about, he made serious subjects funny. He made lots of commentary on society, saying things that perhaps we all wanted to say but couldn't. One thing I remember was when he said what he would call a motel if he owned one, as he hated all the cheery names given to cheap little motels. "I'd call it the Sleep and fuck. I'd Have a big blinking neon sign, SLEEP, FUCK, SLEEP, FUCK, SLEEP AND FUCK, SLEEP AND FUCK." Classic. The man will be missed, rest in peace George, the world will be a bit tamer without you.

Not if this one was allowed to die. No way. This man single-handedly made ultimate bitterness into a nearly sweet thing, almost an act of kindness. It is through the acknowledgement of there being NO HOPE that we can start to look at ourselves and realize we're all taking each other down the shitter. I'm just sad he wasn't allowed to sit back and watch it all fall apart like he so wanted to. I cried today. I'll probably cry again. had the bit about "wonderful WINO radio . . . in Western Walla Walla".

Also: "The sun did not come up this morning, huge cracks have appeared in the earth and giant rocks are falling from the sky. More news later on Action Central Newscast."

The "Leftovers" bit was played all the time on the '5 O'Clock Funnies' here in SoCal in the mid-eighties.

I think his bitterness became less endearing in this last few years - but I don't know if he's to blame or if the world just got too much more horrible to find joy in detesting it. Could utter hopelessness actually kill comedy? It may have claimed a comic voice . . .

Because half of it is from Larry Miller's HBO special. And the other half is a cheezy bit of internet wisdom that reads like that stupid "everybody's free to wear sunscreen" song. If you google it, you will find that it is printed in full without attribution on oh, I don't know 150 thousand web pages. Furthermore, it is way too cheery and optimistic to be Carlin. Since the death of his wife, Carling became a grumpy, bitter ol sourpuss. I don't blame him one bit but he would never write the line "Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down." Anyway, it's all full of nice sentiment, so thanks for sharing, and it has floated around the interwebs with the tag "George Carlin's views on aging, so your mistake is understandable and no one is trashing you for making it... but you did make one. Fight it and you just look stupid.

His radio program is alright, but Carolla is hardly cutting edge or even that original. His favorite "coffee flavored coffee" rant is plucked from an old Denis Leary bit. I was in Las Vegas a couple of weeks ago. My friends and our wives were trying to decide what we should see on our last night in Sin City. Among the expected suggestions for Cirque and Danny Ganz, I proposed George Carlin. That's what we ended up doing and we were all glad we did. It was to be one of George's final performances. The old man looked tired, yet his energy was palpable. Maybe he wasn't his former self – an intellectual force of nature of the mid 70s and 80s - but he was fantastic. His set was flowing, his delivery precise and the material; his best in years. We laughed (and sometimes groaned) for the full 80 minutes. It was classic Carlin. Ironically, much of George's set was about death. You'll be glad to know that he didn't take it any more seriously than he took life. It was all bullshit to him. The notion that our dead loved ones were watching and influencing us, seemed to be especially offensive to the old crank. Yet that is exactly what George Carlin will do to generations of fans, comedians, and free-thinkers around the world. His words and ideas will continue to touch and influence those of us who had the pleasure of connecting to his humor. George Carlin, the greatest standup comedian ever... RIP
What Carlin taught me
by MrD

Was not to question the big things - government, church, school, parents... hell, that's all been in vogue for a long time, and most teens don't need anyone to tell them to question it. No, what Carlin taught me was to question the little things, the small routines of daily life, polite mannerisms, and other rules of ettiquette - the stuff so inconsequential that no one even thinks to ask. And if it was Orwell who taught me the importance of language, it was George who taught me the humor in it, the art not in the punchline, but in the telling of the joke. It is going to be a long time before we see someone of his caliber again.

Carlin was probably my favorite living comedian. He's probably my favorite period. Maybe not. Either way, he's the one I respect the most. Maybe I haven't had enough Lenny. but... fuck it. Carlin is the shit. He was the great dirty old man. I'm really at a loss on this one. I'm so pissed off that I missed him when he came through my town. He was just one of the last of that wave of THINKING comedians. Sure, there are many intelligent ones out there now, but there was just something about Carlin. He was intelligent and dirty. He was great to the end, which put him in a league of his own. How many people can make you laugh hard at 70? He held his own to the end. Never got old on us in the sense that he somehow became someone else. At 60 he gave 25 year olds a run for their money. He was just... shit. What can be said? We didn't lose an icon of the past, we lost a living breathing force of nature. Hear that Carlin is dead is like seeing Godzilla decapitated. Your sitting on the couch ranting about some MAN-IN-SUIT action and all of a suddeden godzilla's head goes flying off. Carlin was older than Godzilla though, and the way he kept going I'd almost say harder to believe is dead. But he is, and I miss him. That's all I got. Peace.

I mean you're the type of dude who giggles when Carlin says "shit, boobs" and thinks that's the joke, when in fact that Carlin is poking holes at society's hypocritical prohibitions on words that are JUST WORDS with no further meaning than we choose to give them. You laugh every time Corolla talks about Mexicans washing his car or ching chong and think that's edgy. In short you're the type of head-up-your-ass butthead that Carlin railed against. Was a truly insanely funny concert. That was prime Carlin. Even then, he was still taking his gloves off and finding a way to point out stupidity in culture. RIP to a monumental comedic talent.

You know, I see a lot of obits pop up on AICN, and sometimes its someone I recognize, sometimes not. But usually, I think "that's sad," and move on with my day. This is one of those few that made my mouth hang open. God bless you, George, even if you didn't buy into him. You will be greatly missed. RIP Rufus

I love George but your right...this is comedy NOT critical thinking. Make no mistake...THE BEST COMEDY IS ALWAYS LACED WITH THE TRUTH...but George crafted sledge-hammer observations with wit and scathing sarcasm....it was great but far from suble nuanced thinking. Who wants critical thinking in comedy???Those quotes from internet posters were funny. Most people under 30 probably wont agree.
Mr. Carlin touched me in ways a priest never could

I remember my brother bringing home the album Class Clown. My mom was really cool about it, even though she taught at a Catholic school. She saw the humor and the brillance of the man. Not that she would allow us to repeat the routines, but she laughed with us. I never though his work in films ever touched his brillance as a comedian (though Dogma came closest). I always found myself nodding in agreement with much of what Mr. Carlin had to say. I have never been one to suffer fools gladly, despite realizing I spend a portion of my day being a fool (we all seem to, sadly). Richard Pryor and George Carlin opened people up to new ways of thinking after picking up where Lenny Bruce left off. They were at the forefront of the Comedians' Peoples Revolution and helped us lose our mental chains. Apologies to those who hate the Communist imagery, but the message both guys tried to get across seemed to be that we are all just folk (and not always bright folk). Listening to them I learned to rage at stupidity and forgive the stupid (as I saw I often was one of them).

Carlin was a genius. One of the few people who used profanity but otherwise had a huge vocabulary. Many people who use profanity use it because they have such a small vocabulary, like many of the responders in these talkbacks. But Carlin was incredibly intelligent. Loved Quint's eulogy.

Wow... George Carlin is gone. This man brought me to tear laughing so so many times. I'll never forget the night at my cousins' house my uncle showed us some old Carlin material. I was literally on the floor. By the end of the night I couldn't speak. George, you will be missed sir. God bless your soul and thank you for your humor and truth speaking. My condolences to your family, friends, and fans around the world. You will be missed.

Of all the recent celebrity deaths this one hurts the worse. I liked part of Carlin's performance, but was always saddened that he seemed to have an extreme hatred for God and Christianity. I hate to think of where he is at now. Some things are just not funny.

Watching George Carlin made me go back and watch some Sam Kinison. At least Sam died early before he became a self righteous preaching old fart on stage. Like I want to hear a comic complaining about the environment...

I don't think I realized how much of George's material and way of looking at things had worked itself into my everyday thoughts and conversations until now. All the time for the last week I'd see or hear something odd or stupid or ridiculous, and some random Carlinism would come to mind. Like the newspaper headline I saw, "Obama, McCain Differ" No shit. Thanks for the brilliant fucking insight. You actually had to print that? George, you've permanently warped me, and I thank you for it. I wish you bon voyage.
