They've made a ton of money now that we've outsourced all of our companies to them - now they're going to try to plant a flag in Hollywood. The studios will welcome them with open arms (right now) but ten years from now - with a couple of blockbusters under their belt, they'll flex more muscle. What kind of restrictions will they put on the filmmakers of the future when they hold the purse strings? Guess we'll have to wait and see. Remember - these are people who still believe in class systems and arranged marriages. We may be looking at a whole lot of bad singing and dancing in our movie-going futures. Fuck.

They dont even show cleavage let alone heavy petting of any sort, as for Dreamworks well they will milk this for all they can. Kinda reminds me off the Entourage episode with the crazy arab wanting to invest in a hollywood movie. I could understand if there was some actual interest like with other asian films but Bollywood is just awful and always seems to be about 15 years behind the West. They were still milking Michael Jacksons Thriller up until 5 years ago FFS.

I want AvS. That might be the best idea I've ever heard. Cobra vs Commando. Terminator vs Rambo. Kimball vs Rocky. I just picture alternating shots of both of them standing in a street emptying clip after clip of machine gun fire at one another and yet each and every round misses. Maybe Arnold gets grazed on the shoulder by a bullet. But it turns out to be...just a flesh wound.

An FYI about WHY Bollywood is at Universal...
by Big Dumb Ape
Jun 21st, 2008
11:30:24 PM
For those who don't follow every tiny move that happens in Tinsel Town, the trio of Geffen, Katzenberg and Spielberg...in other words DREAMWORKS...has been trying to get away from its purchase by Paramount and to reform itself as a separate entity once again, where most likely they will strike a deal with Universal to distribute their end product since Spielberg has always had a good relationship with them and still maintains offices on the Universal lot.

So that said, what does that have to do with Bollywood being at Universal? Simple: the half BILLION or so in cash that the 3 Amigos needed as start up capital is coming from...yes, you guessed it...India. So I'm guessing that this project -- a big high profile thing that might have Stallone and Arnie together for the first time -- might be one of their initial development projects or deals to start allowing more cross work between Bollywood, it's money, and Hollywood. Here, you can read Nikki Finke's article about the Dreamwork's financing deal...

http://tinyurl.com/5 dfzru

And you gotta hand it to Speilberg...
by Big Dumb Ape
Jun 21st, 2008
11:36:43 PM
If you read that link I just gave in my post above, in addition to getting a half BILLION or so from Indian investors, can you imagine the amount of money Speilberg will walk off with as his buy-out price OR that he'll get ANYWAY from Paramount projects for simply moving on? Man, you gotta hand it to the guy: he sure knows how to structure a business deal! As the article notes...

But what hardly anyone knows is that Spielberg has the right to elect to be involved in any project that DreamWorks has developed at Paramount. As an ex-Paramount business affairs source once told me, Steven's so-called "Amblin deal" would apply even if he chooses to leave and is no longer under contract. He'd still make 7.5% of the gross and 50% of the profits to cash break. And if Paramount decides the projects won't be made, they have to be offered to Spielberg in turnaround. So this means Paramount may have to fork over major moolah. Or the likeliest scenario is that Spielberg uses this huge leverage so that Paramount and DreamWorks wind up horse-trading some key development projects.

...that's all this will be. It'll be just like the crappy An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn, complete with pointless Stallone cameo as himself, only this time instead of a Jackie Chan cameo along side him it'll be Schwarzenegger instead. And their combined screen time will be lucky to be able to fill a trailer. It'll just be a walk on single scene kinda deal. You just wait and see. So no, this isn't cool. At all. Unless you're a hardcore Bollywood fan I guess.

we americans are now complaining about "our" jobs being outsourced as if these jobs are our god-given national resources. of course, we do it by blaming the people who are getting paid a quarter of what an american would get paid to do the same job. but who keeps the other 75% of the savings? the american and european stockholders, that's who. but let's not blame them or make fun of the way they talk. that would be unpatriotic. and let's certainly not bring up the actual natural resources like iron and copper that we've exploited from their lands for centuries now. OR the fact that we've forced many of these globalized countries to outsource their food supply and rely on overpriced, imported rice and genetically modified seeds, when they would otherwise have the natural capacity to grow their own food. but all of that's too complicated, so let's just blame indians for "stealing our jobs."

Sure, from a cinematic perspective, Bollywood has some issues. There are however, a few rays of light within the industry. It reflects an entire culture. One that people across America have not only accepted with arms wide open, but with their checkbooks open too. And if you think it will take over cinema in general, then you obviously have no faith in Hollywood, or independent productions at all. Plus, it just displays your incompetence. As for outsourcing, India basically said, hey, check it out, we have cheap labour, and a shitload of people....AMERICAN companies and THE AMERICAN Government decided to go ahead and pay them for it. If people lost their jobs, blame your own government. Plus, if Indians didn't keep you on hold and apologize for it, you'd have bitchy hags from Iowa not giving a shit about your issues, and yeah, keeping you on hold for 45 mins too. You're not only a bunch of bigots, you're a bunch of ignorant cows.

Is this movie being made for major US theaterical release? No, it's being made for Indian audiences as usual... So what the fuck's the big deal? It's not even for you! They just happen to be filming in Hollywood and having cameos by Arnold and Sly... Big fucking deal... And in any case, there are some genuinely great Bollywood movies that are straight up well done serious films with no singing and dancing in the rain... But of course let's chastise an entire industry we know nothing about, right America? It is true that 90% of it is the regular singing, dancing formulaic romantic stuff, but Indian audiences eat it up. So it's really no different than American audiences flocking to shit like Meet the Spartans and Love Guru. Except India actually has an excuse as the majority of people that see these aren't well educated, live in downright poverty and only want a few hours of happy love comedies and music to make them smile and dance steps to imitate at their weddings and local events, say what you will but they're a bunch of happy motherfuckers who appreciate the little things in life.

I've been visiting this site for over ten years now and it really saddens me to read this talkback. The amount of ignorance, stereotyping, lame-ass jokes and the kind of xenophobia put on display... Look, I'll be the first to deride Bollywood films. But what do all these comments about call centers and jobs and rebirth and so on and so forth have to do with everything?

I live in New Delhi right now, just finished watching "The King oF Kong" and was getting on to read all those reveiews that I had seen here before. This is what I read instead...

It's really funny that the more we try to experience and learn about each other, the more we have this kind of crap to remind us how the vast majority actually function. Thanks a lot, guys.

by Big Dumb Ape

06:54:06 PM
I love how some are (rightly) pointing out that some countries like India or China are trying to become economic powerhouses by taking on more and more outsourced American jobs, yet others here are (wrongly) then instantly calling them "racists" or making other bullshit statements. Yeah, nice way to try and deflect the argument away from the cold, hard TRUTH.

Case in point, up above Bong -- who must REALLY be smoking some seriously strong shit today -- stated (and I quote): "Sigh. Some people think they're entitled to a high paying job. Its a new world out there. You're competing against someone who is just as educated, more industrious and who will work for less. Instead of complaining about it get off your lazy ass."

You're kidding me, right? You're trying to take the issue of outsourced jobs and reduce it to the notion that Americans are NOT WORKING HARD ENOUGH? That they need to get off their "lazy asses"? Well, here's my diplomatic response to that: Fuck you. About 2 years ago, I lost my job and had to restart my life (and the year before that, so did my brother) because both of our companies -- covering two different industries -- decided why pay American workers an honest day's wage when instead they could be paying outsourced workers overseas pennies on the dollar to do the same computer work.

Bottom line: it wasn't an issue about our "laziness" -- though that's what management tried to laughably claim in shutting down my job and putting me and my co-workers out on the streets. In fact, we even brought in a Federal Mediator to try and resolve the deadlock, at which point the company said it wouldn't ship our jobs overseas so long as we...yes, wait for it...QUADRUPLED our daily computer workloads. They said that was the only way to make the company "economicially feasible" given how LITTLE they could hire people overseas, who could then simply transmit the data back. At which point, during a break in negotiations, even the Federal Mediator -- who by law is supposed to remain neutral and unbiased -- turned to us in private and said, "This is utter horse shit. Even I can tell these guys are just stalling for time to start shipping your jobs overseas. They're just dragging these talks along while they get their chess pieces in place so there's no disruption of cash flow. We're wasting our time here."

So don't even try giving me that line that "Americans are just lazy workers" in a global economy. It's not about me getting up earlier or staying later at work. It's about the simple cold, hard fact that NO American worker can afford to compete against outsourced workers who are willing to do your job for fucking 50 cents an hour just to secure the work and THEN start to demand pay raises over time to escalate their standards of living. Hey, I understand where they're coming from. You now have college educated, computer literate grads in poor countries saying "Hey, I'll do it for a FRACTION of the money just to get ANY work at all" -- but that just creates bullshit economics because what American...blue collar worker or even in my case, white collar computer literate...can compete against slave labor rates? Hey, in principle I'm basically economically conservative for the most part, even I would recognize that at THAT point the U.S. has to start placing restrictions over "what" kind of work or services a company should be allowed to outsourced IF it means putting Americans out of work and out on the streets.

Also, am I the only one who finds something laughable in having testosterone fueled stars like Arnie and Sly in this, given what happened over the Richard Gere and Shilpa Shetty incident that actually resulted in death threats for simply kissing her in public? I can already see it: while doing a press conference overseas, Sly or Arnie will flirt with and kiss the leading lady(s), which is exactly the kind of picture that the global press will most want to get since it symbolizes the new union of Hollywood and Bollywood...

...At which point India will erupt in riots. And of course, much like the Gere incident, once again India will blame it all on "ugly Americans" for being so morally bankrupt that we'd actually dare kiss a woman or show affection in public. So it just seems like a crock to me. How sex-driven Hollywood and sex-repressed Bollywood are supposed to work together long term is beyond me...

Who's to blame?

Ultimately, if a company tells you're fired because they are going to take cheaper labour from overseas, who's to blame? The company and your government that supports this - or the overseas worker? Of course the former, but blaming the foreigner is a much easier thing to do, especially for the unemployed bums as they congregate in the local bar and drink their sorrows away while feeling sorry for themselves and make off-colour jokes about foreigners. Its much easier than criticizing your own government for fear of being seen as unpatriotic by a beerswilling moron sitting next to you on a bar stool who might decide to smash a beer bottle over your head.

Western countries have been exploiting foreign countries for cheap resources for years. Its why people in the West have been able to enjoy everything from food crops, clothing, tech products, and other goods at affordable prices. Western corporations and governments eventually realized, 'Why not exploit those countries for cheap labour too?'. Now all of a sudden, the westerners affected start criticizing the foreigners for this. Globalization is a two-way street. You can't support it only when it works for you.

#1- Arnold is retired from acting, he's busy being gov. IF he were going to come out of retirement it would be for T4 not some low budget crappy Bollywood movie, which leads me right into #2 11 million pounds is like $21 million. That's like beyond low budget for Hollywood and wouldn't even pay Sly or Arnie's catering budget. #3- So what they are shooting at Universal Studios?! Guess what- those are stages open to the paying public. If you or I wanted to go film at Universal Studios tomorrow I could pay their rental fee and be in there by 9am. Probably in a better stage than the Bollywood shitbirds too because it would be an American production and we'd get more love. #4 No quote of any kind from Sly or Arnold. I guarantee you 1,000% that if they ever even are told about this bogus rumor they will deny deny deny. Argh- I am punching the walls reading this stupid story because now all the other movie sites are picking it up as fact too. You see this is exactly why the fuckwads at Latino Review get zero respect from Variety, Hollywood Reporter etc. Journalism involves actually picking up the phone and checking a story out before printing a totally bogus(and obviously so) rumor. But noooo- all these dumbass movie sites do is cut and paste from other sources. Shame on AICN, but more than anything shame on this bs Indian Production who just gamed all of you for free PR. Its the free hand of supply and demand. Very simple. If economic conservatives are afraid of appearing hypocritical for wanting government intervention when they constantly throw around terms like Marxism and Commies at people on the left who support government regulation, its a hard bullet, but they're gonna have to bite it.

And your apology is accepted. Thats why you'll never rise above the rank of Duke.

Rappin Duke, don't even try having an intelligent argument on global economics with Bobo. He betrayed his true beliefs and allegiances and even his biases on global economics the moment he based his entire stance on the notion "Western countries have been exploiting foreign countries for years." Because, you know, once again America MUST be the BAD guys in any and all economic equations.

And as you rightly pointed out, Duke, at least in my post I FAIRLY acknowledged WHY a foreign worker is trying to steal and secure outsourced American work -- they're willing to take ANYTHING to start their own economic ball rolling, after which THEN they'll start to drive up prices right back up, feeling they can now manipulate the system to THEIR advantage. In short, and in fairness, they're only looking out for themselves. In fact, this was best demonstrated recently when the Indian Foreign Minister -- in a move that surprised many except those who understand basic human nature and greed -- said a very loud "Fuck you" to the environmental Greeneis of the world and to any and all possible climate change regulations, when he stated that NOTHING comes in front of India's efforts to industrialize itself into a modern economic powerhouse. So if that means buying up and consuming more oil and spewing out more pollution...so it can now rival America or China or the entire EU...so be it. Basically he said, "After we get it the way WE like it, THEN we'll talk. But till then, PISS OFF."

But going back to my post, as I said -- and Bobo is truly an unintelligent Bobo worthy of his name if he can't understand this simple basic fact -- you CAN'T have American workers struggling away, where BY LAW a minimum wage has to be paid to them, competing against overseas workers willing to work BELOW said wage levels. Hell, not even below them, but at subterranean depths in comparison. And Bobo, you said (quote): "What does any of that have to do with Big Dumb Ape saying 'FUCK countries like India taking outsourced American jobs.' He blames foreign workers, not the US government or companies."

Earth to moron who can't read: clearly I was criticizing the companies TOO, which is WHY I noted how even a Federal Mediator took note that the COMPANY was just stalling for time at the bargaining table while it got its ducks lined up. So in truth my post DID criticize BOTH ends of the scale, noting the company was wrong to sell out its workers AND that foreigner workers are also to blame for undercutting American workers in ways that no one can compete against, not if they want to actually be able to pay their bills.

So in the end, Bobo, we've learned two things here today. First, you know squat about economics, or whatever you do know is based on an anti-Western sentiment. And second, Rappin Duke was right when he stated that you have such LOW reading skill levels that your pea-sized brain can't even understand the MAIN IDEA of a post.

I understand free speech. I also understand the right to be able to say whatever you want. But isn't there a balance with common sense, intelligence, or even decency?

I understand this is a movie/new talkback, and I have no problems at all with people talking about how shit Indian movies are by their standards or arguing the various merits (or lack thereof) of mass-culture moviemaking that relies on iconic (and flat) characterization with no nuance. If you want debate the notions of romance narratives versus psychologically "real" fiction etc.

But for a talkback that mentions India to feature so many "funny" comments about outsourcing, beards, turbans, eating babies/monkeys/whatnot, accents, surveys...I understand it happens, I'm just registering my sadness.

Americans and Europeans whine like babies. Indians close down call centres cos of your whining - and move in back room outsource services - thats something called ingenuity...the great American people, worried about a few outsourced jobs?...weak....Indians, Chinese, they don't whine - they just get on with it...bottom line... Bollywood makes a movie in Hollywood - big fucking deal. They're not going to take over America. They're not going to take over American business. They're not taking over the film industry...But the fact that you stupid mofos think they will - are scared that they will - show you to be the weak fucks you are. If this is the American spirit - America is dead by afternoon tea time. And the dick that said India and China are killing the planet - where the fuck did you go to school. America and the West have already stuck the dagger into the heart of the planet. America by refusing to sign various plant-saving treaties still are...killing the world. And its rich, having made tonnes of money, having become developed nations after destroying the planet - its rich to then turn around to the developing world - who also want riches like America and the West - it's rich to say "We got money by killing the planet, but you shouldn't. Oh no, that would be wrong." Screw that double standard. YOU did it. Why shouldn't they. Instead of stopping them, why not lead by example? Why not offer Green alternatives to help the developing world...? Why not sign up to Kyoto? HAH! America leading by example? Big joke that is!!

What's with the generalizations? Where do folks get off making judgemental remarks about an entire populace? Less than 5% of Indians in India speak English (yes, and most of them work in call centers - ha, ha), so extrapolate from that who you even know or have encountered. In any case, how the fuck does a BS piece of news on purported cameos being hyped by the Bollywood machine even lead to such ignorant vitriol?

I'd like to know how many of you intellectuals complaining about outsourcing ever dreamt of working the Microsoft help desk. And why don't you guys complain about the terrible animation and rendering in Pixar movies and shorts while you're at it; a fair amount of that stuff gets outsourced here as well.

AMERICAN companies provide a brief for all Indian call centres to follow, which include: Follow the script(written by Americans). Do not deviate from the script. Do not engage in conversation with the customer. Just follow the script. Also, answer with a Western European name because Americans are so stupid, your 'foreign name' won't register. American poicy is to treat Americans like idiots. With you Stalker - that is the correct policy. Finally, there are 30 million...30 MILLION...Christians in India. There are several very good reasons that call centers have moved to India. 1- India is cheaper (but not as much as you might think) 2- India has a powerful workforce in the IT sector, as opposed to the USA, where technological cluelessness is epidemic. 3- Customer Care is superior because Indians actually enjoy working in Call Centers, as opposed to Americans, who just complain and act like they are too good for the job. 4- You can hire a dozen Indians for every American, thus, there are more CSR available to service your needs and shorter wait times. 5- Americans are selfish and indifferent to the needs of the community and thus do not hesitate to spend their money elsewhere. 6- Republicans refuse to subsidize education and economic development and convince the rest of the country that it's a waste of taxpayer dollars (see 5). 7- Private healthcare costs stymie business grow and employment in the USA. The list can go on forever. You could, of course, move to India, where foreigners are in demand and hired at competitive salaries.

Ask the CEO's of the great American corporations who choose to shift jobs to poor countries to save a few bucks so that they can market products cheaper to you guys, while they get rich on higher profits. The tastes of India's 1 billion people reflect their socioeconomic status more than their culture.

Bollywood has shit all to do with India. Their music videos and movies are racey in a different way than American movies. Take out the sex, take out any meaning or context, and have gratuitous softcore foreplay in the form of song/dance (Bollywood's changed in the last few years, if this sounds unfamiliar you might be remembering the '90s, '80s and earlier).

Now someone tell me how the FUCK does this happen from a culture which sought to FINE Richard Gere for kissing that one actress? Nothing in those movies has any correlation to Indians or their lives, yet "Bollywood" somehow pumps out a million of these and they're tolerated by that culture which frowns upon everything else.

So where the fuck did this crap come from? Because that's what it is, crap.

This story means nothing. Arnie and Sly still haven't been in a real movie together.

You are right that Bollywood videos are filled with sexualized imagery that conflicts with the more strict conservativism depicted by Indian news stories (ie Richard Gere). Unfortunately, religious fundamentalism exists everywhere, and in every belief system, and, like Bill Dobson in the States, the wacko fundie minority is always louder than the contented majority. Most Indians like their sexy videos and have no problem with them. But you don't hear about level-headed and sensible people in the news because sensibility doesn't sell. Make no mistake, India is a huge country filled with many different and often conflicting belief systems. The Hindus and the Muslims, in particular, have a lot of animosity between themselves. Pakistan and Bangladesh were once part of India, but separated when fighting between Hindus and Muslims were at their worst. Unfortunately, recent terrorism and historical amnesia are currently threatening to rip that old wound wide open once again. The good news for those of you in America who so desperately want your call centre jobs back: India could once again succumb to widespread sectarian violence due to a confluence of economic disparities and tribal rivalries. In that sad case, Western investments are likely to pull their industries out of India.

One thing you wrote made me laugh: "I'm not opposed to some type of govt. regulation making American minimum wage mandatory for anyone competing with Americans for jobs". Dude, the American minimum wage is the lowest wage in the modernized world. What is it now, $5.75 an hour?! If that were really the issue, then why has so much work been outsourced to Canada, where the minimum wage currently stands at $9 p/h CAN... or roughly $9.20US right now.
