Sigmund and the Sea Monsters . . .
by kevinwillis.net

It's tough to see how it'll translate. That Land of the Lost could be made into a movie makes sense--they manage to squeeze several seasons out of a new Land of the Lost with more menacing sleestaks and Timothy Bottoms (that all appeared to be shot in a local nature park, and sometimes in somebody's backyard) about, what? 10 years ago? Something like that. The concept is a classic . . . I'm definitely feeling the potential of Wonderbug (man, I loved that show when I was 6). Simgnud and the Sea Monsters was always a: eh, I'll watch this, cuz it's the only thing that isn't golf or a soap opera that's on.

I am still disapointed that they are going to make a Land of the Lost for laughs (granted if it is anything like the last few Will Ferrell movies, they really won't be playing for laughs). I would have rather seen then play it straight. Ferrell's mugging the cameras for an hour and a half will probably ruin the movie.

I'm guess Sigmund will be one of those bland tweener movies that have come out in recent years. If the lead character was a girl instead of a boy, I would say this is a perfect Emma Roberts vehicle. I expect that movie to come and go.

If they do make any of their more trippy shows into a movie, they need to get a Tim Burton type of director to play the trippiness to the hilt.

BTW, while on the subject of Will Ferrell. Is it me or are movie comedians shelf life for being funny dwindling? The original SNL cast had a decade run or longer of being funny. Even Bill Murray can be relevant and funny in recent years. Chevy Chase went until the mid-eighties before he hit the comedic wall. Same with Dan Akroyd. Adam Sandler hasn't been funny since Happy Gilmore. Ferrell has put out a lot of crap recently. Ben Stiller has been horrible for years (although Tropical Thunder may turn that around). Jack Black gets weirder and less funny with each movie (although I was never the biggest fan anyway).

THE FRIDGE WAS NOT NUKED!
by ZeroCorpse
Jun 16th, 2008
12:36:03 PM
I'm sick of that phrase. It's based on a LIE. In Indiana Jones there was NO NUKE. It was a small A-bomb test. That's a different thing entirely from a nuclear missile. The magnitude is MUCH higher in a nuke. The damage is much greater with a nuke. A little A-bomb will destroy a city. A nuke would destroy a state, or more.

If you're going to use it (and frankly, I thought that scene was funny) then at least say "bombed the fridge" and not "nuked the fridge" because there's no way a fridge would survive a nuclear warhead. There is every possibility that a small A-bomb would be survivable if lead-shielded.

It's a terminology thing and it irks me. The scene wasn't so bad that it deserves to be a meme, and it hurts it more that people mangle it into something it was not.

Rant over. My vote for a Krofft show is Liddsville; it was the kookiest.

Great Space Coaster wasn't Krofft.

ZeroCorpse - It is Nuclear bomb
by toadkillerdog
Jun 16th, 2008
12:47:52 PM
It was a Nuclear bomb. Hence the phrase - Nuked the Fridge. Perhaps you are thinking of the distinction between a Nuclear weapon and Thermo-Nuclear weapon, such as a hydrogen bomb. Yes, that is several degrees of magnitude more powerful than an Atom bomb, but nevertheless, they are both still nuclear.

Nuclear technology or not, it was still a BOMB, not a warhead, and the payload is magnitudes different.

I am with you. I too have very fond memories of those shows. It was during a time when the TV choices were very limited, and saturday morning cartoons and live shows meant something special. Kids back then actually looked forward to saturday shows, and just like the new TV seasons, kids had new cartoon seasons aimed at them. If anyone looks at comics from the late sixties and seventies you will see the ads for the upcoming saturday cartoon seasons. It was great to anticiapte the new shows. I like having more options now, but my fondness for the old shows will never abate. Long live Lancelot Link Secret Chimp!

Somewhere in the transition from the 70's to the 80's a switch was made from all the happy stoner fucked up live action shows to cartoons. My cynical self tells me it was the change from the free love, power to the people vibe to the corporate money-grubbing Me Generation, but to be fair, it could also be that someone figured out shows featuring transforming robots kicked ass.
