I just yesterday found out Wall*E isn't going to make it to Australian cinemas until September 11...after months of following the news here and watching and re-watching the trailers and then watching them one more time, my hopes have been cruelly dashed. The whole damn world gets to see this movie months before me :( Why? Why? Whyyyyyyyyy? Now you're all going to be telling me how good it is and I won't be able to see it! Its like bart being banned from the itchy and scratchy movie! Why Pixar? Damn you why? I'm going off for a good cry.

I know this site has been known for its off the charts hype in the past, but something tells me this time it is warranted. I can't wait to fire up the DLP on the 25th and find out for myself. It's going to be nice to have this and Hellboy II to hold us all over until July 18th when... well... we all know what happens on July 18th.

Seriously, one of the highlights of BNAT 9 was seeing the exclusive WALL*E...

and then, right after, seeing a bigger than life-sized Harry on the screen in front of me in a bad-ass, red BnL jacket the Pixar folks gave him... and mind you, I was right in the front row at BNAT, so it was quite huge.

BTW, not to shill for any particular corporation, but Best Buy is doing a cool promotion right now wherein you get a free ticket to see WALL*E with the purchase of certain Disney DVDs, Blu-Ray discs, games and CDs. I picked up a couple of Disney films my wife and I didn't have in our collection... and got two tickets. Great deal!

I can't wait to see this on opening day!! Thanks for the review, Harry. It sounds like it was an awesome screening.

I *wish* we could have seen the whole film at BNAT, but I'm sure it was far from fully complete in early December.

applause in a movie theatre. It's not live theater. I mean if the directer is there at a debut, that's one thing...

I've been at movies that were so good they got applause at the end. (2001, roger Rabbit) Some that got applause in the middle - the Millenium Falcon jump to warp speed or whatever they called it in Star Wars. I just never "got it". it's not a standing ovation if everyone getting up to leave anyway.

It's like a zen koan - "What if a theater full of people applaud but no one responiible for what's being appluaded is there to hear?"

Laughter I get. Crying at a tear jerker, sure. But applause?

Awesome!!!

I loved RATATOUILLE to the point of deciding to learn to cook and planning out a vacation to France. I can just watch that film nonstop. I love it. When I saw the trailer for Wall*E I went into a kind of slow motion stunned limbo... I was thinking about RATATOUILLE and extrapolating what Wall*E would be. I quickly decided that it just wasn't possible for Pixar to shoot any higher. But I could see the potential for what could be one of my favorite films of all time. Right there in the form of that little waste management robot. The nuance that was already there in the little teaser trailer. I work in game development and I dream of making a futuristic science fiction game about being a robot... and I know that I can't make the game I want because I know it won't sell well enough... and seeing what could be my own dream realised in a Pixar movie... I'm really looking forward with both excitement and nervousness... and all the more after this review.

Ahhh so you've seen the film then I take it? You must have done to be able to qualify it inferior to the charmless, clichéd, utterly unimaginative, Lion King. One moment of pre-requisite poignancy does not a good film make.

If ever there was an example of why not to trust the nostalgia of youth, it's Short Circuit. Loved the film as a kid. Watched it again recently and it was utterly, unutterably shite. Such a bare faced attempt to emulate ET, only with added bare-faced racism thrown into the mix. Makes Mac and Me look like a masterpiece.

...a sense of allegory or metaphor can help. I didn't feel much emotional investment with any of the characters in Lion King. They were all so thinly drawn, and again just charmless. Disney cookie cutter material. If you give that character heart, a spark of life, empathy, individuality, then I might feel for them. Alas, Disney all to often tend to bypass this in order to appeal to a completely broad, homogenised demographic. They play it too safe, too often, and as a result, more often than not we get the American golden boy persona, with a few tear jerking moments thrown in to comply with the Disney patented formula. If you ask me, this is why Disney ended up losing their way.

At least do Harry the courtesy of respecting his (AND the other reviewers) comments until you've seen the damn film.

Whiny, Since the first Toy Story, I felt the same way about Pixar movies until I saw Ratatouille, which seemed more adult-oriented. Looks like Wall-e will even top it. I've been hooked since the first trailer. Love movies with little talk and kids probably will enjoy it too.

Toy Story was landmark obviously. Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo still came at a time when a Pixar CGI film was a big deal. The impact of films like this has been severly lessened by the onslaught of mediocre CGI kids films that come out every week with celebrity voices. I remember when a Pixar film release had a real sense of being a big event. Despite Ratatouielle being so incredibly charming and brilliant, it did well, made money, but then in the mainstream was quickly forgotten.

The cinema-goers desire for CGI movies is lessening, and Pixars brilliant storytelling and eye for beautiful animation has been tainted by so many other lesser films.

Wall-E will clearly make big bucks, but I don't think it will placed in the same sentence as Toy Story, and will probably fall of the radar not long after. I hope I'm wrong, but I fear this getting to be the case.

I certainly hope it lives up to your words. Everything I've seen of Wall*E looks great, but better than the Incredibles? I hope you're right! And though he seems to be gone at the moment, Phoenix, don't be a douchebag. So Harry liked movies that others didn't like Godzilla, big whoop. If you don't respect his opinions, then why even be here and post here? That's kind of dumb. And would it really be a bad thing if Wall*E was better than The Incredibles, better than any Disney movie before it? That doesn't make those other movies suddenly become bad, they're still fantastic in their own right. I'll never understand that mentality that some people display. More awesome movies is good for everyone. I know this might seem like a bit of a suck-up to Harry, but he gets shit on by asshats so much it seems, I wanted him to see not everyone is out to make lame fat jokes and that people around here still love to hear his unabased enthusiasm for movies.

I guess people just got up, had a bowl of Shitty Flakes and decided to be pricks to, A: people they don't know and will never meet, because they saw a movie before them, B: a movie they have not yet seen. I can't get behind just a bunch of random dickheadedness. Why? Come on boys, did none of you see Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back? Don't keep making Smith's points for him. As for the movie itself, I saw those clips at BNAT 9 (which I was thankful to be going to)...and I teared up at certain parts of them. At this rate, I may need a hanky to go see the whole film. I am glad it's getting positive reviews from some people I know from BNAT, some of them are grouchy towards Pixar films, and kids' films in general...so this makes me think Pixar has probably knocked one outta the park. Sorry...not enough coffee yet. I have no judgements on a film I won't see until this weekend. But, I saw the trailer for WALL*E during Kung Fu Panda last week and got the feeling "THIS...COULD...WORK!" from it. It's very cool that DreamWorks put out their best movie, on many levels, with KFP and it appears Pixar is about to do the same. For me, I have The Incredibles at the top of my "best Pixar movie list", followed by Ratatouille, then Cars, then the Toy Storys. I'm an diehard robot fan; have built them, designed them, read EVERY Asimov story (and yes, I still hate every second of the I, Robot movie with Will "Art, Schmart...give me a paycheck" Smith) and in fact, love the heck outta "The Invisible Boy". For me, WALL*E looks to be something I will love for years to come.

And do boffo box office. It may be top grosser of the year. While nothing can replace The Incredible's in my heart (due to it being the greatest super hero movie ever made, combined with the family dynamic, combined with . . . well, everything else about that wonderful movie. But I wouldn't put both movies in the same box--The Incredibles was a superhero/family/personal potential movie, while this looks more like a sci-fi/incredible journey/curiosity fulfilled/discovery of love type movie . . . (with a cautionary eco/consumerism message). Normally, I don't care that much about that kind of movie, but I'm betting Wall*E is going to be great. I probably won't see it until a month after it is out, but I fully expect to be blown away.

And the real good news there is that it's going to help cement John Lasseter's control inside Disney, not just of the animation division but of what's going on with the Disney parks. If you care about all the great ideas that have never seen the light of day from the Disney Imagineers, I think this movie is going to be nothing but good, good news. Lasseter could use a little more clout to broom the deadwood out of some of the larger Eisner-era hold overs in Disney, and this could be the E-ticket to make it happen.

The best Dreamworks movie ever, until King Fu Panda. As a Pixar movie, it was a little disappointing. Because it was just darn good, instead of mind-blowingly great. But I just bought the DVD, because I know my little girl will watch the hound out of it. She gets excited every time the trailer for Cars comes on before the Incredibles on the Incredibles DVD.

Check out the BlueSkyDisney Blog (just Google it), if you haven't before (I actually found it through an AICN post about six months back).

Eisner was a big part of the problem, especially after EuroDisney had so much trouble. Their solution was to cheap out on everything, like Disney California. But they are getting it right now--though still not always spending as much on their domestic parks as the Oriental Land Company spends on Tokyo Disney and DisneySEA.

The folks close to what goes on at Disney all say (a) Lasseter is in charge of animation, as is nominally in charge of the parks, but is becoming more and more in charge as time goes on. Every property that Pixar turns to gold, like Wall*E, is going to give him more power--with the board, with the financial people, etc. He will get more cash for the parks every time a Pixar/Disney animated film knocks it out of the park. This includes stuff like the upcoming The Princess and the Frog. Also, if the reworked Bolt performs well at the box office, it's going to be evidence that Lasseter has the midas touch . . . and Lasseter's ging to have carte blanche to rework and retool the parks.

Just keep in mind, it's a long process. His first show of power is the retooling of Disney's California, which is only now bearing fruit, and won't be done until 2015 or so. It's going to be Lasseter's long-term impact that's going to determine how Walt Disney World, Disneyland, and Eurodisney are going to be, from 2025 and beyond.

From what I've heard (I've never been, probably won't), Tokyo Disney already rocks . . . but it's because the Oriental Land Company funds the development, and they spend 100 million on a ride where Disney spends 30 million.

From everything I've read, Lassetter understands that it's that kind of development, investment, and attention to detail that keeps people plunking down money to come back again and again. As such, as Lasseter consolidates his power (and he's made no secret that he wanted control of Disney animation and the parks, specifically), we'll see Disneyland (being in California, it's going to benefit earlier) and Disney World benefit tremendously from the Pixar acquisition. Yay, Lasseter!

Hell, I may even catch a midnight show. It remains to be seen if it can outgross The Dark Knight, but if these early reviews are any sign, it's going to be an outright bloodbath between the two. Can't wait.

As far as the Disney parks, for my money, Disneyland is perfect. In regard to DisneyWorld, tear out that cheesy-ass Indy stunt show and put the Indy ride in its place. The Great Movie Ride? Bupkus. Tear it out completely and start thinking up a Ratatouille flume ride to put in its place. Oh, and that god-awful Drew Carey 'adventures in sound design' thing needs to go like yesterday. What a waste of 20 minutes...

only for the movie news. The movie reviews are utterly worthless. Really, I know you're a movie critic, but even as a critic you still (should) have some journalistic integrity to worry about. Hyping up every fucking movie as the second coming of Christ makes you look like a tool. A movie CRITIC is supposed to CRITICIZE movies -- that means good AND bad. Are you really saying ther e was NOTHING bad about this film? It was perfect? Really? Pixar is good at what they do, but what they do is make kids movies that are HIGHLY formulaic. Go watch The Brave Little Toaster and you've basically seen every Pixar movie ever made.

My fondness of Finding Nemo comes from the fact that it was the first movie I watched with my current girlfriend. I realize that the movie itself has flaws as you mentioned, but it's still one of my favorites due to it's sentimental value... so I guess that makes my opinion void. Still, you shouldn't miss this film on my account by any means.

Even the trailers were a massive hint that sheer wonder and adventure were what this film was about.

I don't know why some are finding it so difficult to believe Pixar can still make amazing films since they have been quality from the off.

Many suspected the likes of Indy 4 would never live up to any serious scrutiny or the absurd hype but this I am FAR more confident will be must see.

"SPEED RACER" to "WALL-E"? Because so far this year, "SPEED RACER" has been the best film that I have seen this year. I have been waiting for "WALL-E" since I saw the trailer this year...I cannot wait for another trip to "Infinity & Beyond". It is funny that I think the true heirs of Stanley Kubrick's filmmaking style are the Wachowskis, the Coens, and Pixar. The image that really made me believe in Pixar as one of the greatest filmmaking entities in motion picture history is when Sully is being chased in the doors factory in "Monsters, Inc." and the viewer the limitless space of this assembly of door factory. Just amazing.

I love the visceral glee of SPEED RACER, but WALL-E is the first film I've seen in my lifetime that truly evokes the genius of Charles Chaplin. It's like CITY LIGHTS, MODERN TIMES mixed with this fantastic science fiction mythology. WALL-E is a tramp... and a wonderful one.

I gotta second Harry on that one. Speedracer isn't a "great" movie, per se, but it's a solid popcorn movie (I certainly think it's better than Transformers) and it definitely has "visual glee". There are a lot of reasons to like the movie, even if some people didn't. Tron underperformed when it was released, and became a geek favorite. I think Speedracer has that potential, too. In some ways, it may have been so new, stylistically, that it was a bit off-putting.

and John Goodman kicks all sort of ass in that film. That is all.

One of the great things about having young kids who get addicted to certain films and want to watch them a hundred times is that you often end up watching them 100 times. I've seen Monsters, Inc. a dozen times this week, and there was so much thought that went into that movie, from the company bureaucracy to how the doors were handled and stored and called and how the scare floor worked and the CDA and on and on. The big "banishment" door . . . of course, after watching it dozens of time, I also have time to wonder why when Boo laughs and activates all the doors in the facility, you never once see someone opening their door to get something out of their closet and almost falling into the monster world. Clearly, the doors can be opened (if activated) from the "real" world, because Sully exploits that to return from banishment in Nepal. A million doors are on, and no parent sticks their head in to get something . . . ? Of course, tells ya how much one gets sucked in to the thoughtful construction of these Pixar films that I'd be sitting there thinking about that. Or what a geek I am.

So close to the actual word, yet so far away. And seriously, clapping six times during a film in the theater? Unless it was the entire audience I'd get the usher.

Also, phoenixmagi talking about 'The Lion King' sounds like Patton Oswalt describing himself when he was younger and cut off from everything cool in life. "You guys hear Phil Collins's 'No Jacket Required,' man?! It's pretty dark! He's an edgy dude, man! He wears khakis AND SNEAKERS!"
Those are some mighty big words, Harry.

City Lights is in my top 5 as pure cinematic genius. I truly enjoyed Wall-E, but will have to see it multiple times before I would compare it to City Lights, or Modern Times. I do like the Tramp analogy, though.

Don't you think you are doing some viewers a dis-service comparing this film to these true classics? That can only generate such a desire in film geeks that can not possibly be lived up to.

Don't get me worng, I loved the film, too and I can't wait to see it again. But comparing a new film to genius that has stood the test of time for 80 years like City Lights or Snow White and Disney's finest seems a little pre-mature.

I'm just sayin'... Also, can you expand on the embargo that Disney put upon the site? How did they ever allow the screening if reviews aren't allowed? Isn't this thread in point disobeying that embargo? Of course, they would be less happy if you hated it I suppose...

BTW thanks for a great screening. I wish the audience could have had a geek discussion afterwards, but awesome in any case.

I can't wait to see Wall*E - it's really been this and Dark Knight at the top of my must-see list this year, and I'm sure I'll really like the movie... but I've been affected by the Harry Knowles Hyperbole Storm before. I remember going into "Almost Famous" thinking it was going to be the greatest thing ever, and that I would be soooo moved by it... and I liked it, but it didn't change my life or anything. If anything, I was let down by how "good" the movie was and how "amazing" it wasn't.

Harry, I still love your site, after 9 years of visiting and posting, I'm still here. But can you ever try to review films with just a little more objectivity and a little bit less... "windswepting?"

I've seen them all and all of them are different from each other and each have their specific pleasures. Before yesterday, I couldn't pick a Pixar favorite. It was something of an amalgam of TOYSTORY2INCREDIBLENEMOATOUILL E. I love all of them in different ways.

But WALL*E has an ambition about it, that builds from a seemingly simple love story to something that's universal. Stanton juggles the love story, the hard sci-fi elements, and the physical comedy just so, that he makes it seem easy.

I understand people's weariness about hyperbole. I'm guilty of it myself. But I can only go by the simple truth that I've never seen anything like WALL*E before, and that I can't stop thinking about it a day later. This movie has the serious potential to change people. Or not, who can say. Just let go of your cynicism on this one... it's a great film and you can believe that or not. Either way, I'm seeing this one again. And again.

The only thing the films have in common is that they are animated. Why don't we stop comparing animated films to eachother simply because they are drawn and instead compare them to other movies they resemble. Comparing Incredibles to other super hero movies makes sense. Comparing Incredibles to Wall*E doesn't. How about a comparison to Close Encounters, 2001, or The Day The Earth Stood Still?

I am so sick of the al gores and others who will undoubtedly fade into the dregs of history as their sensationalistic hysteria proves unfounded. I am by no means a bleeding-heart, corporation-hating, Al Gore apologist but I still recognize the danger of rampant materialism (I just think rampant government regulation is far more dangerous). As long as the moral of "Wall-E" is even-handed, honest and not some lefty polemic I'm sure I'll have no problem with it.

Why is it, that regardless of the film being speculated about, there is always a percentage of joyless cunts who simply cannot accept that it may actually be a good film? By the way, just because there isn't a glut of reviews on AICN, doesn't mean there aren't plenty of reviews out there. AICN isn't the centre of the known film universe. I've read plenty of reviews elsewhere, and suffice to say, they're all, without exception, glowing. I have very little doubt this film will deliver, but by all means, you tiresome cunts keep whining.

Smacks of herd mentality. For those who remember 1997, damn near EVERY reviewer was creaming their jeans over "the unsurpassed majesty and glorious filmmaking that is Titanic." On a side note, no matter how often I (strenuously) disagree with his reviews, will always respect Kenneth Turan for being pretty much the only major reviewer to take shots at that bloated cloying monstrosity. As for this suggestion that "you can't comment on a movie unless you've seen it", it is very simply asinine. You make decisions on every film you come across - is this something that interests me or not - and make judgments on that film having only seen a few moments of it or nothing at all.

Is it too much to ask. I don't want comparisons with Citizen Kane, Star Wars, The Incredibles, E.T. I have always thought that WALL-E would be a phenomenon since the opening moments of the very first trailer i saw with my two daughters (aged 4 and 11 at the time and it's now a year on). Their reactions to the character spoke for themselves and i expect this film to be one of the biggest films of all-time. Forever. Andrew Stanton has threatened it time and again. My kids must watch his films at least three times a month. Now, how about that Monsters Inc sequel..? It would be bigger than any Toy Story sequel i can promise you. Hooray for Pixar though for kicking Dreamworks ass again and again. GO WALL-E..!
Damn these reviews are encouraging...

Not that I need any more positive reinforcement. And it's not just Harry - glowing reviews are popping up all around people!!! So that "Harry likes everything" argument is falling a bit flat....
How can people be applauding and dazed at the same time?

The man loves him some cinema. I don't always agree with him, and I take his over-the-top style with a grain of salt, but it's good to know there's someone out there who loves films as much as he does.

What I want to know is, is Wall*E as good as that movie with Matt Leblanc and that creepy fucking chimp?
Saw the movie tonight, it's nothing mindblowing.

This review is insane. The movie was fun but not spectacular. Hopefully they'll put up the review I sent in. The short film rocks the shit, though!

You ever read any 70s sci-fi back when the big scare back then was about about global cooling and the next ice age? Cause that seems dated too. Same with the environmental scares du jour back in the 90s. Oh yeah though, we definitely have it right now though. Come to think of it, aren't we all suppose to be dead from bird flu or monkey pox or some shit by now? Live through enough scares and perhaps you won't be throwing around that ignorant claim so loosely. We may even have serious environmental problems, but I certainly wouldn't trust that crowd to get any of it right given their track record.

I'm not sure what to make of this movie. The trailers and scenes I've seen have left me very underwhelmed. And the overboard hype machine has left me distrustful since overhyped movies are almost never good. The RottenTomatoes reviews are also anemic, which is rarely a good sign. And although I like the talkbacks here, I don't think I've ever seen a review here I could trust (in many years of coming here). I guess it is Pixar though. And I see some non-black-text people saying good things about it. So my question is, are there any people out there (who saw it) who didn't care too much for Ratatouille, but thought this was great? Cause I kind of thought that one was overhyped too, compared to earlier Pixar movies.
Oh cmon - the hype for Way of the Gun didnt convince you?

I personally like Way of Gun but I'm a sucker for 70'sploitative flix. It was then, when it was tanking at the boxoffice and Harry ran an impassioned article saying GeekNation would lift it to monetary success if everyone drew together ... and the movie tanked ... badly ... that i realized how very very little correlation there was between AICN and average filmgoer.
