but find it hard. I LOVE 2D animation but the PIXAR stuff has never touched me. And I suspected interest would be low on Wall-E because of how blatantly a rip-off he is of Johnny 5, but apparently either audiences don't have good memories or they simply don't care. I'm sure I'll see this on DVD sometime, but have such a knee-jerk reaction about 3D animation that I'm just not sure this will be the PIXAR film that finally does it for me.

You're aware that Johnny Five was not the first to have that look, right? stanton wanted the character to have eyes that looked like binocluars. Yes, they are similar to Johnny Five's, but it still works. I'm glad he went with what works for the character, over worrying that people wouldn't be able to get over that over-exaggerated connection.

I admit it is a fairly basic approach that was probably used before the 80s. That's the least of my worries though, as I just can't cotton to 3D animation yet. I would love it if PIXAR would do a traditional 2D film, but with perhaps dozens of layers, or something that pushes traditional 2D stuff into a new realm. 3D stuff looks very plasticized and Anglicized to me (adding skin tone to characters that originally had flat white shading, giving them rounded eyes where they were once basic dots. Sometimes less detail and simpler is better in my opinion. Look at old Mickey Mouse versus modern Mickey. I LOVE the character the old one exudes, but detest the plastic look of the new one.

Yes, 2D is awesome. Yes, it's sad that there aren't as many 2D animated films these days, but all this CGI is a fad. It'll balance out soon enough. However, the fact that people lump Pixar in with the glut of mediocre CGI films ticks me off to no end. Pixar did it first, Pixar still does it best, and unlike those other studios Pixar has actual HUMANITY to its films. Wall-E will be no exception. "Cold"? Is that a joke? Also, again, Roger Deakins FTW

Pixar is bringing back 2-D animation, in a sense. Disney put Lasseter and co. in charge of creative development for Disney animation, in addition to retaining his role at Pixar. One of his first directives was to re-start 2-d Disney animated features. The Princess & the Frog will be the first of the new bunch to be released next year. Have to disagree with your assessment of CGI and color animation. There's merit to both the simple approach and the more textured look. They're different for different purposes. I wouldn't have been able to take the characters in "The Incredibles" seriously had they been drawn as simple as early Mickey Mouse. The nature of the story should dictate the look. All aspects of a film should serve the story.

Thanks for the heads-up about PIXAR's 2D developments! That truly does excite me. I know what you mean about all aspects serving the story and completely agree. I've loved Deakins since Fargo, and of course Shawshank, but what really blew me away recently was when I saw The Assassination of Jesse James...I walked away from that just in awe of how beautiful it was shot. absolutely amazing. and of course, I found out it was Deakins...the man is not just a master, but a true innovator. this bodes well for Wall-E, a movie I was already dying to see.

you guys realize this movie could be SERIOUSLY huge, right? I mean, a lot of Pixar movies get big adult audiences as well, but thir bread and butter is the kids, and the kids' parents buying DVD's. but if this movie is as good as it looks, and it blows everyone out of the water, taking into account box office and DVD's, it could be seriously gigantic! crossing fingers!

I thought _The Incredibles_ had some of the best cinematography of recent years: very Vistavision-y, great color depth, and surprisingly photographic in the city scenes. I suspect, therefore, that the smart boys 'n' gals of Pixar have been getting inputs from DP luminaries for a while (Deakins is great news tho' - go Pixar!).

Because although Australia generally gets movies at the same time (well, a coupla days before due to Thursday openings and the int. date line), or 2 to 4 weeks later, for some unfathomable reason since Nemo, US summer Pixar releases are postponed 'til SEPTEMBER. I can't work out WTF the reason is, as we even have school term breaks before then. Don't they LIKE making money???

So I guess that's pretty much it for Pixar threads for me for a few months. Grrrr.

pretty obviosu top 3 although Elswit is an electic choice, people usually say Richardson or Doyle. Though i have to always put Andrew Lesnie in my list, his work on LOTR just still resonates and got alot of more mainstram filmgoers into cinematography. But yeah Lubezki is like a New God.
Knuckleduster - do you have "Visions of Light'?
by half vader
Jun 14th, 2008
10:14:12 AM
No disrespect because the (Godfather) work is just beautiful and it's been a while since I saw 'Visions', but what were they going on about with it being 'original'?? Had no cinematographer ever heard of the Renaissance, especially chiaroscuro? Caravaggio? That's a style of lighting, right? And the amber thing? Old photos were sepia, right? Nothing against Willis himself, they were absolutely great choices given the subject matter, I just have problems with others using the term 'original' or 'groundbreaking' for those particular flicks. Although yeah I'm too anal about semantics I guess. Great doco though.

I do love the story though about the suits freaking because that gorgeous (lack of over-) lighting "wouldn't play at drive-ins!".

I cast a vote for Darius Khondji for his Jeunet/Caro stuff.

Yeah, half forgot abour Doyle. He's great. So too is Richardson. And Lesnie, I like what he does, but there's something slightly artificial about his lighting (okay, that sounds stupid. His style of lighting is obviously just the way it should be). I just have a major boner for natural lighting (which is why I love staring at anything Malick does). That was the biggest influence on my choices.

Lubezki. A New God indeed. I watch Ali over and over and over again.

Vader, I'm afraid I haven't seen Visions of Light yet. Thanks for the recommendation. I'll check it out. Yeah, people tend to go nuts and exaggerate, but I still think the guy's a bloody genius (see Manhattan). His work on the Godfather movies are probably seen as "original" because it's never quite been done exactly like that before. Endless debate, really. Khondji's work is wonderful, even if I feel about his work the same way I do about Lesnie (Se7en is a different story, though).

The other legend is Dante Spinotti, of course, but his last truly great work was on The Insider and Wonder Boys. I hear he's working with Michael Mann again, so that should change things.

Great cinematographer
