The reason Punisher is such a good comic-book is because it's like an action movie, but in the comic-book medium. Once you put it back into the movies, it becomes a totally run of the mill action flick, unremarkable in any way.

...Marvel needs to make it a comic book movie. Make the villains super-powered or costumed. Oh, and get a real fucking director and a good screenwriter familiar with the source material.

11:26:10 PM
Haven't you guys seen Rome? He was fucking excellent and he's definitely a proper bad ass. If you don't think he has the chops you're insane. I don't see what the problem is here. It's got the Punisher killing a bunch of people in cold blood and an actor that actually looks the part. And if anyone starts saying that the last Punisher movie was good I'm going to have to fucking kill them, because it was awful and a bastardization of the material. Moreover, this has atmosphere which that john Travolta wreck was completely devoid of. And I'm a huge Punisher fan. When I started buying comics in 1990 as a kid Punisher was the first comic I bought in a little comic shop called "Same Bat Channel" in Plattsburg new York. I remember it like it was yesterday. I also own a copy of Amazing Spider Man 129 so I'm not just talking out my ass here. I can't believe I'm the guy saying this for once but what exactly is the issue?

Jun 12th, 2008
11:27:03 PM
Are you guys the same ones that bemoaned the first Incredible Hulk trailer for no reason? Lets have a discussion of why you dont like it. I have some problems as well

NEGATIVES 1.I thought the lighting seemed way over the top. Full of neons and uber bright colors that just dont fit in the palette of Frank's Castle's world. I would go back and desaturate the colors throughout to feel very Bradstreet like (nice sign btw).

2.I am totally not buying the shot of the spinning acrobatics...just not Punisher's style. That shot feels stolen from Boondock Saints...where it worked because they were fuckups. Frank Castle isn't a fuckup. Thus it feels out of place.

POSITIVES 1. Really liked the costume. It feels appropriately armor based and still tactical. The voice also felt very intense. Maybe too much but we will see...

2. Alot of the action felt viceral and raw, like the fight scenes in Green Street Hooligans. Well played. I hope its not wirefu-ish {I'm looking at you chandelier) and very down to Earth and mean.

Either way there is no way this can be worse than the first 2 incarnations...no way possible.

Lexi, you have some work to do but it feels like there is potential for greatness or a flop...its up to you.

looks anything less than great. First of all he looks like the character a great deal more than Thomas Jane, who wasnt bad, but got swallowed by a bad movie. Stevenson is a lot more rugged and intimidating. More shark like, which is how the Punisher should be considering he's more or less dead inside. And his voice is TOO LOW? What the fuck are you talking about? Frank Castle is RAGE incarnate. His voice should be barely above a rasp. And like I said if you've seen Rome you know that he is a good actor, period. He 's going to be excellent in the role even if the movie doesn't live up. There is no one I would rather have playing Frank Castle.

didn't care for the last one (except for thomas jane). it felt like they couldn't make up their minds as to whether they wanted it to be a realistic action-type movie, or a comic book movie. this looks at least as good as that one, although i don't like the hanging upside down thing. i agree with antz- a hyper-realistic punisher movie (a la heat/bourne movies) would be great. Funny story...I thought Tom Jane would suck in The Punisher,ao I skipped it in theatres. Then I played the PS2 game and was amazed at whoever did the voice for the character...then I found out it was, yep,Tom Jane. SO I rented the movie when it hit DVD and quite enjoyed it...except for the John Travolta parts. Tom Jane RULED as Frank Castle and it killed me when he passed on this one due to the script. Based on the trailer,it do indeed look very direct-to-DVD and Steven Segalish....maybe Vern can take a bullet for the team and review this one when it hits.

Cant these idiots figure out why non-powered comic characters are remotely interesting? Punisher is a simpler character who excels as a comic due to his ability to actually compete against super-powered baddies. With no super-baddies, it's just another Steven Segal movie as everyone is already pointing out. It's supposed to be a comic movie, not another action drama film.

Stevenson is a good choice, he and McKidd were fantastic in Rome, the movie will be R, but the budget is even smaller than it was in the previous one, the chandolier bit is terrible, and so is the dialog.

This is too bad. I actually liked the first Punisher, and really liked Ray Stevenson in Rome, and so was looking forward to this. As has been mentioned numerous times above, this trailer looks quite direct-to-dvd-ish. I'll say it's slightly better than your average d2dvd flick, but not by much.

Man when you are selling an action movie, especially one with a no-name star, you need to have some serious money shots in it. Not some dude swinging from a chandelier firing guns. Sigh.

If you dont have the budget for Die-Hard-level money shots, then I woulda gone with more grit, less operatic theme music (reminded me of the Hitman trailers). Have some cool-ass shots of bodies flying out a window and down onto a moving truck or something where you hear the crunch of bones breaking. Maybe a close up of Frank putting his gun to a goons's face, then a cut to black as you hear the gun-shot. You know Frank's a take-no-prisoners bad-ass who will kill the bad guys in cold blood, unlike Batman or Spidey. Whatever, I think they blew their chance with this trailer.

What a progressive thinker you are! Using words like Faggot and Gay to describe people on a public talkback. Plus getting angry with people for not believing that Rambo was a "masterpiece(!!!)" is far from fair. The movie surprised us as to how good it was (which was not that friggin' much, mind you, but not bad either) and therefore many of us ate our words. But not whole paragraphs. And I don't know if you know this or not, but you telling people to stop bitching while you are actually doing the same thing makes you something.....annoying to be sure, but something else I just can't put my hypocrite on it. Ah well, it'll come to me.

but the trailer doesn't look bad. It actually looks pretty good to me. I just wish Tom Jane had stuck around. The scene with him holding his kid looks like it is in Central Park, but it flashes by too quickly to be sure. Maybe they're going back to the comic book origin instead of the Tom Jane film (the origin was the part I hated about that movie).

Steven Seagal is a liar and a fraud. I'm an aikido practitioner myself, so I'm kind of speaking from inside knowledge as well as common internet knowledge. True, the guy does know aikido, but he got his 7th Dan from marrying his Sensei's daughter as well as promoting himself once he became Dojo-Cho. And all his talk of Special Forces service is baloney. Plus, his aikido isn't even that great. Too much upper-body strength, exemplified in his highly inefficient Kokyu Nage. I've been to one of his schools, and the style was Aikikai, which means to people who REALLY know street effective aikido, that it sucks. Conclusion: Steven Siegel (his real name) is a phony. But, he does know a little aikido...

This is common knowledge for people who've done aikido long enough and don't have posters of the pony-tailed bandit hung up in their dojos. Do a little in-depth internet research and you'll find the stories there, too. For instance, Seagal Sensei (I'll show some respect now) may have taught a Special Forces guy who happened to be a student in his class, but he was never hired by the U.S. Military to train Navy Seals, although Seagal Sensie would have you believe otherwise. My Sensei actually learned under O'Sensei for over a decade until his death and never recalled Steven Seagal ever being a student, which he still claims.

Steven Seagal's contribution to the art of aikido is that he made it, for a time, globally popular due to his movies.

As far as who would win, Seagal vs Chan vs Li, is like saying who would win Godzilla or King Kong. It's all movies. All I know is those UFC MMA guys are some brutal motherfuckers I'd never want to meet in a closed in cage...

Don't really care for comics
by JonJonB
Jun 13th, 2008
03:06:49 AM
I've got a lot of respect for the source material, I just am rarely able to bring myself to read a comic. For me, once they tske it to the big screen, it's time to stop whining about how much it is or isn't like the original comic, and start judging the film on it's own merits. I liked the last Punisher movie, knew virtually nothing of the comic (or the movie for that matter, happened upon it by chance on DVD) and actually found it rather enjoyable. I don't often analyse stuff while I'm watching, but I'll just say that I was very aware that a lot of my enjoyment came from Thomas Jane's performance, so this sequel was pretty much dead to me when it emerged he had bailed. Now I've seen the trailer...I don't think there's much hope of me seeing this movie, ever.

I'll put it to you this way in terms of action,a plot in which Castle is up against both the mafia and the yakuza, and creible acting at least from Lou Gossit Jr (as you call him "a black dude'.)Shit yeah Dolph's Punisher will remain uncontested. We all know Lungren couldn't master the queen's english, but neither could Ahhnold "get to de choppa..!!!' schwartzenegger.Atleast "Drago" has a Black belt in Karate which was a bos for a movie like the punisher, whilist the jane version was just uh, guns.I'm no fan of lundren, but i reinterate; His version is still the best even if it's a 90's B movie sans skull.

with that being said,I gotta hand it to the poster (whinybitch I think) who reminded me of Jane's Castle breag up a marraige in a act movie.funniest comment thus far.As for the guy who calls women "Bleeders" it's obvs that someone is not getting laid atleast by a female. They should've just adpated the first arc of his MAX run. What an awesome book. That's the only way I would want to see Microchip in these flicks: getting his face blown off. That or the one-shot special he did where Frank gets himself sent to jail so he can take out the people behind thje death of his family. Fucking great stuff. I'm dropping Punisher when Garth leaves. As for this trailer? Meh. Bit too neon, and the hanging-from-the-chandelier is dumb (as Frank would ever do that, massive tactical boner). I will give the film a chance, though. It can't be any worse than that botched Thomas Jane nightmare (Florida??! Fuck off).

It wasn't the best trailer I've ever seen and the movie as a whole looks like a late 80s/early 90s low budget action flick BUT that would still make it the best Punisher movie yet. I'm a huge comic book fan and I love Ennis' run on Punisher, but the Tom Jane movie with Travolta et al was one of the worst comic book movies ever. It was atrocious from start to finish. Ray Stevenson was awesome in Rome and although his American accent leaves something to be desired he IS the best Frank Castle we've had yet and I think this movie will be solid enough if not brilliant in any way.

I'll explain what my problem with him is- he makes ridiculous laughable claims that he can't back up and then turns around and calls other people "Fanboy Cunt".

I don't give a fuck what his particular subject of choice is, I object to the hypocrisy. I also object to his sweeping generalisations, moronic attitude and pathetic need for validation.

To be fair, I did take the piss out of the Sinestro Corps War- but I did it to bait him, and if it is good then I'll happily say so.

Give me a link for the McCarthy comparison, and I'll let this one go as well.

I won't read either story, because I do not have enough interest to go out of my way to buy them.

And before you claim it is me being dismissive and ignorant- my argument is not that his obsession is good, it is that he is a shrill fanboy fucktard with a hypocritical streak a mile wide.

Theres a shot 8 sec into the trailer where frank is holding his dead son on a blanket (his wife and other child are lying on the ground beside him), this is the original (comic book) birth of the punisher, his wife and kids are gunned down by gangsters as they picnic in a park, as opposed to the wholesale slaughter of about 40 castle family members in Lions Gate's last punisher outing. So this is another origins film?? The first shot of Frank as the Punisher in the trailer (on top of the table with a flare) is very Punisher comic book and in particular very war zone, they nailed the body armor it looks great and Ray Stevenson looks and sounds the part. I really hope Lexi Alexander did a good job with this, it looks like there is potential here.

There is an obscure California state law that says you are not allowed to make a movie anymore unless it's a remake, sequel, or based on a comic book, and you get a special certificate and autographed T2 DVD from Governor Schwarzenegger if it is all three, as in this case. So if this is what it takes to get some good low budget action movies going where it's about a bad motherfucker killing some guys instead of a magical or mutant guy in a colorful costume swinging around, then this will have to do. I'm sorry if your favorite comics strips and cartoons are collateral damage, but I for one am happy that they keep trying to make a movie out of this one.

I still say Dolph was totally wrong for that other one AT THE TIME (I think he could do it now) but it's kind of a fun, goofy movie. And I like the second one. Somebody was just criticizing the guitar playing assassin - that guy is one reason why I like that movie. It mostly plays as an old school action movie, but then every once in a while it has a weird touch like that. The guy comes in and sings a song about how he's gonna kill him, and Thomas Jane just sits there chewing his egg like "Huh. That was weird." Perfect.

I will miss Thomas Jane but this guy seems good. Not sure about hanging upside down, but otherwise this is a good down and dirty trailer and I like the tough guy line at the end, I don't care what you boys say.

I like Tom Jane a lot, but the character he played in that movie was retarded. He sits eating in a diner while a man plays a song for him. He has a stand-off with two security guards where he gives them a chance to draw, then just walks away after. He USES A FAKE FUCKING FIRE HYDRANT TO MAKE A BAD GUY GET A TICKET. A stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid movie.

That I must echo the "soundstage" quality comments made about the filming. Look, this isn't hard okay? Even without Jane. You call in Punisher scribe to punch up the dialogue and that's about it. Why is this so damn difficult?

Good Boondock Saints reference. I'm still hopeful, but I'm not really feeling it. I guess I want a Ridley Scott Punisher, but that'll never happen. I like Pullo as Punisher, and was never totally invested for Jane as Frank. Slavers is simply a must make comic film.

You took all my talking points! The Thomas Jane Punisher was NOT the Punisher. Lundgren's was closer to the source, even if they screwed up his family's names and the way they were murdered, at least they got the fact that he was totally devoid of mercy, and really didn't give a shit about anyone. Ray Stevenson kicked MUCHO ass in Rome, so my only reservation is whether the writers and director had the guts to go dark enough. Think the newest Rambo, but with the Punisher, and you have it right. Deadly and mean, without wasting a single move to pose of make stupid one liners. Just go in, KILL EVERYONE AS QUICKLY AND BRUTALLY AS POSSIBLE, and then get out. Don't take chances, always have a backup plan, and always be one step ahead of the scum you are eliminating. THAT, my friends, is the Punisher!

this trailer looks okay but that skull is so iconic, why fade it out and make it barely an afterthought? and i agree with vern that the guitar playing guy was kind of cool BUT he was totally wasted in terms of actually fighting the punisher since all the punisher did was try to drive away, crash his car, and then luckily have a spring loaded knife to get himself out of his stupid failure to even flee.

First off, this is just a teaser trailer so it's not going to show all the cards, calm the hell down.

The people complaining about no Jigsaw and no Microchip I guess you guys aren't following the production closely or spent a few seconds to go to IMDB.com and look at the cast list. Heck they even have The Punisher Task Force in this!

Ray Stevenson... if you haven't seen ROME I suggest you check it out and stop watching whatever bullshit you are watching now... LOST... HEROES...NIP/TUCK. Pay close attention to Ray Stevenson as Titus Pullo and bow to his awesomeness and tell me he wasn't perfectly cast. In the photos and footage we've seen, he looks like he walked out of a Bradstreet drawing. And it sucks to be you that the image of a guy with slicked back hair and a gun = Steven Seagal. It doesn't for me, and I've seen most of his movies. In the theater, even.

I agree with Vern, it's about time we get more low budget action movies, I don't want to see a 200 million dollar Punisher movie anyway. I'm neutral with this director, but at least she's young, hungry and indie and not Brett Ratner or Stephen Sommers.

Still worried about the screenplay? Well that movie you guys having been humping your pillow over, IRON MAN, well, those writers rewrote the script.

Oh, and that shot of the Punisher behind the wall with all the group of people with guns on the other? That reminded me of LEON : THE PROFESSIONAL

Anyway, enough of the B.S., hopefully 3rd time is a charm.

You find the most hard-core of hard-core fans, ask him what's the best "Punisher" story, buy the rights to it, adapt it faithfully into a screenplay, and film it. I never cease to ponder how people who should be holding the stop/slow sign on a road crew end up in positions of power to make such dumbass choices. Blackmail is the logical answer, I think. Guess I'd better get some of those Spielberg-donkey pictures. Or the Bruckheimer-gerbil ones. I'd see if I could get my hands on the Lucas-Womprat ones, but I heard they're hard to even look at.

That hanging upside down and shooting was awesome. I don't mind a tip of the hat to Boondock saints. That movie was fantastic, and if they make this one as good at boondock, then I'll be a happy camper. The one liner was sweet too! escpially if its right before he kills a dozen guys with a rocket launcher or remote mines, or a grenade, or etc... I also love the crazy neon lights. makes it look like a comic book, but not over the top like those Clooney batman movies. I think they are a sharp contrast to the darkness that otherwise surounds the punisher. And as for his voice being too deep. It can't be deep enough. I think they should get satan himself to do the voice over for the punisher. This is the guy who can take out the whole marvel universe (effin sweet comic too!) so the darker and deeper the voice, the better! I'm seriously looking forward to this! Oh and Lexi is fucking hot!

The Punisher is one of my favorite Marvel characters. Obviously the Dolph Lundgren adaptation was bad, but it looked like Citizen Kane compared to the Thomas Jane adaptation. That travesty was a trainwreck visible from the first images and teaser. It was like a person who had never picked up a comic book in their life tried to make a comic book movie. This one actually looks good. It looks like a Punisher movie. I am glad they did not go with any big stars for the film - I'd much rather see a low profile movie rather than directly pandering to the general moviegoing audience like the last film did.

As a Punisher fan with two dead parents, I can absolutely say that the line is ridiculous - coming out of Frank Castle's mouth, and with inflection he gives it. I'm a big fan of Ray Stevenson from ROME, and I think he's a great choice for Castle, but that line delivery was Hayden Christiansen-Anakin Skywalker bad. They need to use another take, at least.

I'm not quite sure exactly how you would like him to be delivering his lines, but I think it's spot on. I'm not sure if you not seeing him in Rome offers you more objectivity, or less knowledge as to his acting skill, I suppose it could be argued wither way. And considering some people are talking favorably about the last Punisher film, which was every bit as bad as Ghost Rider or Daredevil in how badly it butchered the material, I'm not sure many people here have any idea what they are talking about. Especially considering that this trailer is more of a teaser than anything else, if there is anything anyone should be bitching about it's what they DON'T show rather than what they do. There just isn't enough here to hate. If you think there is it's pure hyperbole.

Hayden Christensen bad??? My god did Ray Stevenson fuck your sister or something? Because that's the most over the top thing said so far on this talkback in it's wild inaccuracy. If you're not a fan fine, but he's certainly not whining in the same way that Christensen (one of the worst actors of his generation) that makes you want to put your fist through his head. And as I said above I'm a Punisher fan to, Im willing to bet at least as big of one as you if not bigger, and that's exactly something Frank Castle would say.

You say cheap looking or whatever I say ahhh the glory days of action....80's style....action is supposed to be silly and fun and intense. And for piss sakes enough with the whole spinning thing....geez its like a scene in the flick....not the whole flick...LOL
stop bagging on Stevenson and fucking watch Rome
by oisin5199
Jun 13th, 2008
09:20:38 PM
That will shut you bitches right the fuck up. Stevenson is an awesome actor that can play rage, sadness, frivolity, and change on a dime, or whatever the expression is. Case in point: he bashfully frees his cute slave so she can marry him. She misunderstands and thanks him for freeing her so she can marry her slave boyfriend. When the boyfriend walks up to thank him, Pullo (Stevenson) goes from hurt confusion to rage in 2 seconds and bashes the guy's head to a bloody pulp on a pillar. Then he realizes what he's done and actually tries to apologize to the woman. The guy's amazing. Don't let this lackluster trailer fool you.

And talk about rampant misogyny and sexism. So for a female director to be taken seriously here, you have to determine whether or not she's fuckable? Nice. Lexi Stevenson would kick all of your asses and laugh while you cried for mama. Bitches.

I can at least see why it's important for actresses (and I'm with you on Julie Benz, have been into her since Buffy), but with behind the scene folks, it doesn't even need to be brought up, as its irrelevant to their filmmaking.

Hanging upside-down, spinning, and taking out a room full of bad guys is a failed idea. Punisher is simply the easiest super hero to do. Bad guys kill family -- Punisher kills EVERYONE. Where the fuck is John Woo? I love Thomas Jane don't get me wrong but that Punisher movie was a fucking comedy. John Travolta was soo bad! The part at the end where he tries to draw his gun and Jane shoots him then he does a little spin and makes a face. WTF! That's not how the Punisher would do it. Other stupid shit included the singing assassin who decides to wait till Jane is in his car before he attacks. Even though "Brought a knife to a gun fight" and then blade shoots out and stabs him in the neck scene always makes me laugh. But seriously Punisher should be done right... This doesn't look right. The Punisher Cannot Make a Good Movie Character
by Dresh
Jun 14th, 2008
11:23:01 PM
The Punisher was created as a comic 'version' of popular film characters of the time: Dirty Harry, Bronson in DeathWish, etc. Even more blatantly, Castle himself is virtual rip-off of Don Pendelton's EXECUTIONER novel franchise and its anti-hero Mack Bolan; popular in the lat '60s, 70s. If somebody made a Punisher movie then, it could have been interesting. Today, it's a waste of time. The character is a copy of a copy of a copy; interesting as a cinematic transplant into the comic medium, but completely redundant if returned to film. It'll throttle Ray Stevensons career. Too bad for that, but a bad move for Marvel overall. Who knows, though? It may surprise us like The Incredible Hulk did.

...it's about taking the fight out of the person with as little damage as possible to that person. It surely is one of the most philosophical of the martial arts. "Aikido" means "way of harmony with ki." It's actually a very peaceful martial art, but it can hurt. What Seagal Sensei does in his movies is based on aikido, but it all definitely has a "take no prisoners action movie" twist to it, that it all ends up being less aikido and maybe more aikijitsu which is more about technique. For some other good cinematic examples of aikido-based moves, look at the Bourne movies. The main character uses aikido in almost every move.

He's listed as such with the Aiki Federation, I just stated he got an incredibly easy road to a 7th Dan by marrying the daughter of an AIkido Sensei and also legally promoting himself. I'm just saying Seagal is a spoiled brat who was used to getting his way on account of his good salemanship. And yes, he does indeed know to a degree ( just not a 7th Dan degree imo) but he's not the baddest mutha on the planet, okay? I believe Jujitsu master Gene LeBell knocked his punk-ass out on one of his own movie sets one time cause he was acting like a punk and therefore needed to be punked. You don't mess with Gene LeBell...
