I honestly think the ending of this movie is highly, highly critical. And to me, resonating. Yes, the script was weak. Yes, his directing has plummeted to the depths of Sodom (Surprisingly it also looks like Tak Fujimoto, a man who was the strength of the 6th Sensem, seems to not care). Yes, Whalberg sounds like Arnie with an American accent. But the criticised subject matter of the "its the plants!" is not terrible. We all (maybe) believe in Global Warming, yet nature turning its back on us seems only believable if we are to blame. To me, this film says alot for the human race - We only care about the earth when it seems to not care about us. If only he had pulled it off... My major gripe with his directing is his poor, poor choice of what we see. The first shot of the film shows someone blatantly killing themselves. Suddenly all tension is removed from any scene after (even though he hides it in other various scenes). It made the film kitsch and broke the one rule of cinema tension - don't open the fucking door!

Hence the reasons some people hate the movie--too many coincidences. If you have faith, it all makes sense. If you don't, it's luck, but there's so darned much that in a movie, where we know it's fake anyway, that many coincidences just seems like lazy writing.

There is no suspense of fear in the whole movie because we are not dealing with zombies or any external threat that can create fear on screen. We only wait for the characters to STAND STILL..and then that means there gonna kill themselves. So I'm sure you'll all be in mega suspense of people ABOUT TO STAND STILL!! Anyone could see just from common sense that this concept could never form the structure of a horror/suspense.

If Night was smart he would try and build the suspense from humans causing threat to other humans (as was done in War of The Worlds). He tried to do this with the old lady at the end, but failed so so hard. I hated this movie with a passion. *beep* M Night.

Risking and Betting - a rant
by BeyondStatic
Jun 12th, 2008
07:39:52 AM
All the arogance aside, M. Night Shyamalan may have "Risked His Career on a Fairy Tale" but he's certainly betting it on a Happening. I must say I'm intrigued by this one. He's a good writer... let me emphasize that again... he's a good WRITER... but his directing has always left a little to be desired. Clearly "The Sixth Sense" was phenominal. The stilted camera work and stoic acting worked again in "Unbreakable" but after a while the same crap needs to change. Mix it up. If he's a self-described Spielberg, perhaps he should take some lessons. "Jaws" is nothing like "Raiders" is nothing like "Schindler's List" is nothing like "Minority Report". (yes, there are similarities, but that's another rant altogether.) Night needs to mix things up, or, if he's stretched himself to the limit, focus on EITHER his writing or his directing. But he needs to improve on both fronts. The film business, as I understand it, moves pretty quickly. He needs some time to rework some drafts of his screenplays. He needs time to learn a different sense of camera to vary his style. He needs to improve his work with his actors and explore characters, breathe life into them and explore more deeply than the written word (which goes pretty deep to begin with), and take characters on a journey rather than just gradually revealing them. He is very good at what he does, but he needs a chance to improve. This may not be it. He, unfortunately, may not get another (unless this makes some money, which most of his stuff does). But if he adds the right weapons to his arsonal, he could someday soon be a force to be reckoned with... and even live up to his own hype. Robert McKee described a hack as someone who writes what sells rather than what's in your heart. What was in Night's heart, as I understand it, was "Lady in the Water". That worked as a story, (it really is a good, old-fashioned Grimm-style fairy tale) but would have been a bit better as a movie with a few more drafts. Now, it seems, he's back to writing what he hopes will sell... which is admirable to an extent, as he needs a comeback. But he needs a "Sixth Sense"-like comeback. Something that's from his heart. Something that he wants to see. Something a little more out of his head that we, the audience can sit back and watch without over-thinking. Mr. Shyamalan's not a hack, or hasn't been, but is risking becoming one staying with his heady-psychological-thriller-w ith-a-twist-ending-style. He's capable of so much more. Bet on yourself, Night. Learn, expand, and when you get back, pour your heart out and blow us away!

MNS makes TV movies
by Reelheed
Jun 12th, 2008
08:07:24 AM
Sixth Sense wasn't even that great but the only one I'd watch again. If there was nothing better on TV. Which there usually is. I saw Unbreakable, Signs and The Village at the cinema and borrowed a friends DVD of Lady. Each time I've come away a little less satisfied. The Happening seems to have had a really big marketing push over here in the UK but I just can't get excited over "yet another movie with a twist from the guy behind Sixth Sense". All MNS films feel the same. Devoid of passion. There isn't a moment in any of the films where I've held my breathe or felt my pulse quicken. Some of the characters have been emotive - I'm thinking of the 2 kids in SS and Unbreakable - but there has never been a tear or a cheer raised by any of the leads. I can't help but think that MNS wants to see himself in his deep stalwart heroes but knows that he is in fact much more like his simple and confused kids. I think I'll wait for The Happening to hit TV before I'll bother.

08:18:23 AM
I'm not going to see this movie because—like most people here—I know the twist and I really don't trust M. Night to pull it off with any amount of believability. But the thing I think is curious is the ads I keep seeing on teevee all proclaim this as his "first rated R movie". Now I know every talkback for every proposed movie has someone demanding the movie be a "hard R" because they want blood and tits in their Rainbow Brite re-imagining, but do most people really care what a film like this is going to be rated? I'm sure the film has earned the rating—it's no doubt got some gore (read the review above siting the spurting head wound) and the idea that everyone is killing themselves would be seen by the MPAA as too much for kids. (And it probably is.) But, really, that's how you're going to get us into the movie house? The best hook you've got is the rating?

Things like that makes those awards less and less important every single year, proving that it just needs some studio hype to someone to get one. I can't believe no other actor had better supporting work than Wahlberg that year. To get and award nod because you play a loud and full mouthed guy who has nothing more to say is ridiculous. BTW, The Happening looks like a X-Files episode.

Great acting. Good, slow build. It was the perfect superhero film at a time when there was no decent superhero movies. The only thing that sucks was the stupid "where are they now" summary at the end. That was lame and surely must have been forced onto MNS? I'm sick of everyone talking about the Sixth Sense. Every review or talkbacker comment is so predictable. "He has been making progressively worse films since the Sixth Sense"...SHUT UP! Everyone has heard it a thousand times and it is simply not true. SS, Unbreakable and Signs were good movies that people enjoyed in the cinema. These three films received positive reviews, all over 60% at RottenTomatoes.

Watching M. Night's Movies in Reverse
by kevinwillis.net
Jun 12th, 2008
09:13:54 AM
I would not have seen "Lady in the Water" and thought I had just seen the work of a film maker with a lot of potential. I would have thought I had just seen a pretentious film school student given a budget way beyond his abilities. That's a flippin' horrible movie, in almost every way--not to mention the only interesting character was the "bad" guy--ergo, the critic. Everybody else was bad or meh, and M. Night's cameo was cringe-inducing, every moment he was on screen. I took the Village with a grain of salt and, with effort, managed to enjoy it. But Lady in the Water? I'd almost rather sit and watch some Uwe Boll. At least there's likely to be some boobs.

Seriously, this looks terrible. I will probably catch in on DVD, via Netflix, just to see how horrible it actually is. M. Night is capable of some incredible work, and had the potential to be the next Spielberg or Hitchcock--and if he could just get over his own narcissism and solipsism (egotism doesn't begin to describe the M. Night universe of Me Me Me and Myself!), he could make some great films.

I just don't think he's going to do it.

I Loved Unbreakable . . .
by kevinwillis.net
Jun 12th, 2008
09:21:17 AM
Signs was the first movie to show what was going to start going wrong with M. Night's movies. Aliens coming to our planet to kidnap people (with a natural anesthetic gas they emit from their wrists) . . . they are coming to a planet (via interstellar travel) that is 3/4ths water . . . and water kills them . . . and they wander around naked. And the aliens looks comical. It was silly, and needed work--but M. Night had become too good to take input on such foolishness, or give the script another pass with some question marks addressed.

He also cast himself in a critical roll that required better acting than he had to give it. I looked past it, because of 6th Sense and Unbreakable, but those things--especially the anemic aliens, being naked and yet killed by water--I mean, just a rev that gave them environmental suits that could be flustered by water would have been an improvement, and someone saying: "Hey, maybe someone else should play this role. There's a smaller cameo somewhere for you." Again, I liked The Village through sheer force of will and then despite my effort, M. Night spat on that goodwill with Lady In the Water (previous title: I Am a God and Everyone Else is Stupid. Worship Me, Filthy Swine!) . . . sigh. After first seeing The Sixth Sense, I had such high hopes. This guy is going to be one of the greats, I thought to myself. If this is where he's starting out, how much better is he going to get? I wondered.

Apparently, he wasn't going to get any better at all. In fact, he was going to go the other direction.

Sigh.

I guess Night wants to do his films like he does. In that sense he is a European Auteur, and I bless him for that. Somewhere during the film I had a feeling like with the french classic "Choses de la vie" - which most talkbackers would never watch or like - and it actualy ends in Paris' royal gardens, of all places. Sure, the acting is stilted, the characters are a few degrees off from the usual boring Bay-Awesome, no big stars to like (?) and especialy Leguizamo is creepy. But thats why he is there. Night wants to set off people, with strange deaths all around you and a disfunctional family. I mostly agree with Mr. H's review, but would rate it higher. I found it surprisingly scary, and I could discuss many points that are weak, but then there is the hotdog guy, the soldier with the Hummer and the Lady from the rural farmhouse... B.t.w. is that Three-Mile-Island in the background?

Sixth Sense is a classic for a reason. Unbreakable was slow, but still engaging, and Signs I just found to be immensely satisfying and a great twist on the alien invasion genre by keeping it personal.

The village was where things started to go downhill. I think part of the problem was that he lost the supernatural edge. The movie pretended to have one for a while, but it played it's hand way to earn and showed that the monsters were fake, which totally ruined the suspense of the rest of the flick. There were some solid sequences, though. The film overall had some great production values, but it couldn't save an overall weak story and the twist I guessed in the first 20 minutes.

Lady and the Water had the same production values but for a story about magic, there was NONE in it. It was boring, heavyhanded and obvious. Again, flashes of greatness can not save it.

I wanted Happening to be a return to form, but everything points to that not being the case.

I loved NONE of his movies ...

by bobjustbob
Jun 12th, 2008
01:26:14 PM
IMO, SIGNS is the epitome of what’s wrong with M Night’s “storytelling.” Shyamalan’s shtick is to devise a gimmick to wrap a story around. There’s nothing wrong with that if it’s done well. It’s what he does. It’s all he does.

SIGNS fails because both the gimmick and the story around the gimmick fail. The gimmick is groan-inducingly silly and the story is lazy and contrived. I can hear God saying “Sorry ‘bout the wife, but I was really afraid I was going to lose you to Satan. Just remember that my son Jesus was nailed to a tree too and look how well he’s done. Plus your brother really wanted to use that bat again. SWING AWAY!!!!!”

M. Night could have made this a thriller, if he had worked out with a molecular biologist or a virologist how a plant could evolve such a defense, and how that defense could jump species. They almost had it in 'Reign of Fire'. It wouldn't be dragons that killed us, it would be their retroviruses. But M. Night just isn't that deep a thinker.

The acting was inexcusably bad...from Mark Wahlberg to his female co-star. I have to blame this on the actors yes, but the director also has to take blame as it is his job to make sure that he cast actors who can authentically deliver his lines and good performances, therein...or correct them, either the scripted dialogue or the actors when they don't bring forth the intended mood. Wahlberg's performance was embarrassing to say the least...and I don't like attacking people anymore really, but I'm telling the truth.

An actor depends on his director to spot their flaws and mistakes and to step in to correct them...either M. Night can't direct actors if they are not fully developed, or he is afraid to direct a star, hence he is allowing them to go without any real direction. You can get away with that when dealing with a truly great actor, if not however, you are taking a big risk...and in this case, Wahlberg's bad performance and that of his female co-star should have been spotted in the dailies and dealt with immediately. Why the studio didn't order a re-shoot on these scenes and why they gave them to Letterman, considering how bad they are, I will never know...but it will serve to only harm this film at the box office???

02:36:11 PM
It was showing that bad things happened for a reason, in this case, the reason was to put the characters in a position to stay alive when the invasion happened. The water the water refused to drink, the phone call from the driver showing the father was happening, the swinging of the bat, all things that would not have happened had the woman not died.

Granted, there was probably other things god could have done to get those messages across, but that's another story.

As for the people who bitch about the water, do you forget that HG WELLs classic story has pretty much the same ending twist. I've also always been of the mindset that it wasn't the water so much as the bacteria in the water that killed the aliens (seeing as how M Night himself said it was WOTW inspired).

The little girl says the water is "contaminated" and has "ameobas" in it. And that it "Tastes old". Anyone know what happens to a glass of water after you take a sip and leave it out for a week?

Regardless, though, water or germs, if you're gonna criticize the gimmick, criticize HG, too.

Also, talk shit about the alien's design, but that video clip from mexico that they watch on tv was fucking chilling, because you know that's exactly how the first images of aliens would leak out- on the news through home movie footage.

But i'm not apologizing. I liked the movie.

if you dont think he is, then the idiot is you. he knows his craft, and the hitchcock's comparison(i'm talking about mastery of suspense here, not filmography) is actually warranted. while hitchcock is all technic with no heart - most of the time, his characters are just boring chess pieces, m.night's actually injects humanity in his films.

and can you really blame his ego got so big when he was just 24 by the time sixth sense broke records and grossed 600 million worldwide?

And if he wasn't such a Douchey McDouche he would have kept a level head like Spielberg did. Look at his first six films: The Sugarland Express, Jaws, Close Encounters, 1941, Raiders and E.T. Of those only 1941 was considered a misfire and it's still a pretty good movie.

Compare that to M. Night's first six films. He should have hung his ego at the door and directed other people's scripts.

Logistically the invasion doesn't hold up. However an invasion that does hold up to scrutiny would ultimately end with our species being wiped out entirely. If anything the movie is manipulation at its best. How you feel about that is up to you. There are several moments in that movie that had me crawling out of my skin, which doesn't happen often, with the birthday party scene being the freakiest. Too bad I can't say anything similar about anything he's made ever since. Fortunately the solution to most of his problems is rather simple, let someone else write the script!!!

It is ironic you mention the French, when Mr. Truffaut authored one of, if not the definitive book on Hitchcock's career. And Truffaut, who helped introduce the auteur theory, of which Hitchock is considered a prime example..

And of course, by refining his craft within the parameters of the "thriller", his characters sometime did exist to propel the plot and nothing else. As beloved as "The Birds" is, I don't think anyone's running to give Tippi Hedren or Rod Taylor a retroactive Oscar.
