If Night was smart he would try and build the suspense from humans causing threat to other humans (as was done in War of The Worlds). He tried to do this with the old lady at the end, but failed so so hard. I hated this movie with a passion. *beep* M Night.

I feel like after reading those reviews, Dr. Steve Brule and the cast (and Director) of the Happening come on screen and talk to the audience about global warming and what you can do to prevent it.

The village was where things started to go downhill. I think part of the problem was that he lost the supernatural edge. The movie pretended to have one for a while, but it played it's hand way to earn and showed that the monsters were fake, which totally ruined the suspense of the rest of the flick. There were some solid sequences, though. The film overall had some great production values, but it couldn't save an overall weak story and the twist I guessed in the first 20 minutes.

Lady and the Water had the same production values but for a story about magic, there was NONE in it. It was boring, heavyhanded and obvious. Again, flashes of greatness can not save it.

I wanted Happening to be a return to form, but everything points to that not being the case.

And I'm going to mention gophers and Monkey Boy for completeness.

SIGNS fails because both the gimmick and the story around the gimmick fail. The gimmick is groan-inducingly silly and the story is lazy and contrived. I can hear God saying “Sorry ‘bout the wife, but I was really afraid I was going to lose you to Satan. Just remember that my son Jesus was nailed to a tree too and look how well he’s done. Plus your brother really wanted to use that bat again. SWING AWAY!!!!!”

Of course it's about an invasion. Just because laser beams aren't shown obliterating the White House doesn't mean it's not a full on invasion.

M. Twilight goes to great lengths to tell us about lights above every big city on the planet.

Also can anyone name ONE director who's made movie after movie based off of an original script they wrote (even though you can't really call M. Knights original, I bet whoever has the copyrights to the Twilight Zone series is digging through law books trying to figure out a way to sue his ass).

And in SIGNS and UNBREAKABLE it was water that was the proverbial kryptonite. I'm Sensing a Sign from Shyamalan. I guess his next movie will have another evil lawn mower.

Granted, there was probably other things god could have done to get those messages across, but that's another story.

As for the people who bitch about the water, do you forget that HG WELLs classic story has pretty much the same ending twist. I've also always been of the mindset that it wasn't the water so much as the bacteria in the water that killed the aliens (seeing as how M Night himself said it was WOTW inspired).

The little girl says the water is "contaminated" and has "ameobas" in it. And that it "Tastes old". Anyone know what happens to a glass of water after you take a sip and leave it out for a week?

Regardless, though, water or germs, if you're gonna criticize the gimmick, criticize HG, too.

Also, talk shit about the alien's design, but that video clip from mexico that they watch on tv was fucking chilling, because you know that's exactly how the first images of aliens would leak out- on the news through home movie footage.

I'll call out M Night when I think he's fucked up, like in the village and lady in the water. Jury is still out on happening but it's not looking good.

IMO the Emperor has no clothes and he will have to adjust to a world that no longer puts him on a pedestal. Its now up to him to deflate his ego and come out of the delusional bubble his been living in for the better part of a decade.

twist endings can only work when no scenes earlier in the film could contradict it. it's just not the case with sixth sense.

that said, nor m.night or even spielberg can make the kinds of films they've made were hitchcock not there to show them how.

Compare that to M. Night's first six films. He should have hung his ego at the door and directed other people's scripts.

and spielberg did about 5 years worth of tv episodes before the studio let him do film. m.night's carrer skyrocketed much much faster. i'm not trying to defend him - he DOES have major ego problem. i'm just saying, if anyone here were that succesfull that young, would your head not swell to as well?

come on... some of aicn's resident writers are already thinking they're big shots just because they co-wrote a script.

some directors just hide his ego better than others, but you just know how much of a bigshot he realy thinks he is. lucas comes to mind.

And yes, the AICN guys have some very impressive egos which may eventually be their undoing.

And of course, by refining his craft within the parameters of the "thriller", his characters sometime did exist to propel the plot and nothing else. As beloved as "The Birds" is, I don't think anyone's running to give Tippi Hedren or Rod Taylor a retroactive Oscar.

i agree with you that other far worse directors are not given due attention. and we should be directing less venom m.night's way, and more bay's/lucas's/the guy who did the mummy/the guy who did fast and furious/and a bunch of other hacks's ways

Bottom line: Bay's movie entertained. For the most part, it achieved one of the Three E's of film (Enlighten, Educate, Entertain). If M. Night's film is incapable of doing any of that, then it stands be a failure.

As a fan of M. Night's earlier work, I'm bummed that his film making prowess has taken a turn for the worse. And face it, the word of mouth on this thing is abysmal. And it doesn't bode well that his next film is AIRBENDER (!)...

Make of that what you will, M-O-M.

And I too will not rejoice if M. Night fails. I'd rather have him succeed = I will rejoice when he succeeds.
