I am a comic geek for sure. I go to the shop every Wednesday, purchasing an average of about three to five titles every week. My tastes range from several Marvel titles (mostly Astonishing, Twele, Iron Fist and Cap) to the more indie selections (Infinite Horizon and Walking Dead). But with the acception of All Star Superman, I rarely ever buy any DC titles. However, I have been a fan of most of the heroes for years. Most of the titles just haven't really clicked with me. Does anybody have any good spots to jump in for some good DC titles? They can be trades, or just recent issues. I just feel like I'm missing an entire half of the spectrum, and some advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

damnit, i've missed out on this tournament. i think nightwing's gotta win; ninja's in a proper fight against a trained fighter can't win, it's like that ninja vs. samurai thing.

Green Lantern Rebirth is a great place to start if you like GL. Also The SInestro Corps War was one of the best titles in recent memory.

I guess the real question is what characters do you like best? That would help narrow the playing field.

Fucking dragging me back into comic books! I went in just to buy Kick-Ass. I left with pretty much anything Millar, and now I have to hunt down anything Deadpool because he's popular again. And the Walking Dead! FUCK I gotta stop reading this, because now I going to start Skarr and 1985! I ain't made of money.

I'm pretty sure those weren't what got him this far. (It does however illustrate that a hero's choice of weaponry makes such a huge difference that it's hard to ignore EVEN WHEN THE CONTEST DOESN'T ALLOW WEAPONRY!! {amused g})

Presumably Loveless sold fuck all issues because everyone's realised that Azzarillo's writing is fucking abysmal. I dropped 100 bullets years ago after I got fed up forking out cash for a comic where fuck all happened, and even worse, fuck all happen and the writing was getting worse issue by issue. Lot's of brooding men - who all looked the same - muttering cod philosophical crap - slowly - as they stared into the distance - panel - after panel - after - crappy - fucking - panel. AAAGH!!

I suppose I could get Sinestro Corps at some point. I really love a good Batman yarn, especially if Joker is in it. Superman is great if done right (rarely happens though, see All Star Superman for a good example of how to do it). Are there any obscure or cool characters besides the big guns anybody could recommend? I got scared off by all the crisis events and whatever.

I'm starting to suspect more and more that Mary Jane remembers EVERYTHING -- that keeping her memory intact was part of what she whispered into Mephisto's ear.

My guess is that by keeping the memories, she knows that she won't make the mistake of falling in love with Peter again.

Nothing really happened in SI3 with any of the big characters. And as to the coping smarts business what about Yellowbelly? Dudes a skrull and also the 3rd smartest person in the room. The skrulls are an advanced shapeshifting, power duplicating, spacefaring alien race why the heck couldnt they be as smart as ironman who is a guy in robotic armour. What about smart skrulls? Do you think there could just be really clever skrulls? Who arent going to be tricked by 'whats my favourite film?' (god that was terrible)

JSA/Justice Society

I used to love Johns' former series, but since the relaunch, I can't get over how, well, stupid the new series is. The new legacies have no real origins, they just appear and get thrown into battle without training, and the society handles incredible threats like... burning buildings. Which they battle by forming a single-file line and passing a bucket of water. Plus, all the shoe-horned Kingdom Come stuff puts the characters and drama of the JSA into the background. Am I the only one who was never very impressed with Kingdom Come?

I'm with you on that one, Laserhead... loved the relaunch of JSA a few years ago; gave up this current series after three issues of crappy characterization and overused narrative captions. However, I am a Kingdom Come fan... I just think it should be allowed to stand on its own as it was originally intended and not worked into a continuity.

I wasn't as impressed with the comic as I thought I would be... if anyone wants to see some really great cosmic Richard Corben art, check out DC's graphic novel THE HOUSE ON THE BORDERLAND, adapted from a story by William Hope Hodgson, who was a literary precursor to Lovecraft's cosmic fiction. Very good stuff.

The roster, good God this roster must stop growing. Everyone will continue to be just a brief appearance when you have 25 Superheroes on the team.

AS far as the Kingdom stuff goes, I don't I know, I like it. I loved Kingdom Come and I was told that the official sequel was lackluster at best and atrocious at worst.

I had a feeling when the multiverse was repoened we might see a resurgence of some Elseworld universes.

Again though, I'm a sucker for alternate realties.

I throw the gauntlet down on DC to resurrect Red Son Superman.

They probably don't do 2000AD...

I can't seem to let it go. And its indicative of the way the relaunch, in addition to being heavy on exposition, maintains this child-like, Romper-Room-ish atmosphere among the cast. How much time do they spend each issue talking about what a family the JSA is, how important all their legacies are, how much they love one another? ("I see Damage, and Liberty Belle, and Hourman, and I see Wildcat II, and Cyclone, and Tommy, and Janey..."). Bizarrely, this family love-in has given way at times to shocking violence-- when the Nazi villain's attacked Steel's family, literally tearing little children to bits at super-speed. Things like Steel's really inexplicable armor-- which doesn't seem necessary and makes him plod like Frankenstein, rendering him useless except when catching things --and like Ma Hunkel's mentally handicapped granddaughter, have become the new norm, and gone is the sense of high-adventure and strong characterization, moving the 'legacy' theme to the foreground, rather than keeping it as background info that informed and deepened the characters and stories, now creates their entire content.

I so agree with the unbelievable lameness of the bucket brigade. It's total DC at its worst. As long as its the exception, I can deal, but it seems to be increasingly the rule.

Do I recall Joey Q saying no way was Stark a Skrull? I believe so, and have assumed he was therefore NOT a skrull. However, Bendis has now written himself into a position where, if Stark isn't a skrull, this whole series is going to crash. Stark's eyes even appear to be blue with green around the pupils, but I can never tell with coloring if it's intentional or not. Still, despite not previously caring, I now say Stark better be a frigging skrull.

And killing Echo to bring back Mockingbird? Also seems pretty weak.

Is it just me or does 1985 sound an awful lot like those cartoons where the Crimson Chin (voice of Jay Leno), his arch-nemesis the Nega-Chin (voice of Jay Leno) and his minor foes such as the Bronze Kneecap and H2Olga enter our world where Timmy Turner becomes the Chin's sidekick Cleft, the Boy Chin Wonder?

If you're into Secret Invasion I'd recommend picking up "who do you trust?" It fills in some of the gaps in the story so far regarding Captain Marvel and Marvel Boy (what was the chances of them both appearing in the same book hmm?) There's some really funny moments, a nice detective piece and a whole Agents of Atlas story which IMO makes it well worth the asking price.
