...that a remake of Robocop would improve anything on the original. The bottom of the barrel has been scraped dry and now they're not even bothering to come up with new product to market. And frankly, AICN is part of the problem by fawning over this horse shit like it's actual cool geek news. You guys won't report on Uwe Boll movies, even non-adaptation original content, but we're supposed to "ooh" and "ahh" over this year's crop of remake crap like it's worthy of serious attention? Its just so sad to see so many beloved and potential properties going down the toilet.

Now that is what I want to see. To hell with a reboot. Get Paul and Weller in there and have a sequel made to the original film, that ignores part 3 completely. Peter Weller would still be badass as Robocop... more so now with his age in a Clint Eastwood/Dirty Harry kind of way.

Damn that is one ugly poster. It looks like really REALLY bad fan art. Some fan art is pretty damn good and the idea that this poster is an official thing released by the studio is kind of sickening. Plus, I must admit that while all of the many recently announced remakes are unnecessary, few of them piss me off as much as this Robocop one. I, like most hardcore movie geeks, am not crazy about remaking everything under the sun, but it usually doesn't really get under my skin. I know I'll always have the original and a bad remake will simply remind me how awesome the original is and stuff like that. But the idea of remaking Robocop just blows. The original is so unique, so ballsy, so asskicking, that the very notion of remaking it makes me want to go all ED-209 and start killing people. Well, maybe not that bad, but either way, I hate this idea.

I, too, agree that a Robocop remake seems like a misstep, even in today's highly remakeable market. I mean, if anything, doesn't the trend reveal that people just aren't that interested in remakes. Most Carpenter remakes (aside from Halloween) tanked. But the thing about Robocop is that it's already been tainted, by lesser sequels 2 and 3 (despite the fact that I wholeheartedly enjoy 2, despite the fact that there is something missing there; 3 is just a clusterfuck). So unlike, say, the 3 Star Wars prequels, we're not dealing with something not already damaged.

Blockbusters were relatively new, the concept of them. We were still coming out of the Grindhouse era, where sci fi and horror movies were in the same bin at the video store, and they were always violent or heavy in some way. The original terminator is, essentially, a B-movie that made it big. Those were the days when Freddy killed Jack Sparrow and spat him out as !00 tons of gravity defying blood...The ideas and vibe are what's missing; that's why these remakes fail. I mean, for fuck's sake, the original Robocop was rated X, and they had to scale back the violence to get the R. For my money, the Grindhouse dbl feature at least went back to the spirit of these movies and tried to match the audacity of those old movies...(pieces, anyone?) I mean, what do I know, anyway. My favorite movie of all time is "the Stuff". I know it's bad...no one likes this flick but me...but, MAN, it's pretty fuckin' WEIRD...and even stars Danny Aiello, Paul Sorvino, and Garrett Morris. Remake THAT movie! There are lots of supercool books out there and ideas ripe for movie making, but it's gonna take a director with balls to take the leap of faith. I'm guessing that Battle Angel Alita by James Cameron will lead the pull for the genre back to the darker nature from whence it came; Forbidden Planet is the granddaddy of all that is right with sci-fi - which plays remarkably well on the big screen... Rockatheramin. I'm out.

...RebootCop is going to suck? Look at the poster for the biggest clue as to how they're going to fuck this up.

Remember how great it was when RoboCop, after a movie full of his struggle to regain his humanity, smiles ever so slightly in the very last scene when he says his name is Murphy? That little smile is the capper of an amazingly cool, involving, gripping and thrilling movie.

RebootCop, however, puts that smile in the actual TEASER POSTER for the movie! Now how fucking crass, shallow and soulless is that?

I've just spent some time praising the Transporter flicks for their gleeful stupidity, so I'm no stranger to loving crap, but the very idea, marketing and probable execution of RebootCop makes me feel almost physically ill.

Fuck EVERYONE involved with this project.

As has been said the '80s were the blockbuster's heyday because the game was already up. The studios at that point were fighting a rapidly broadening media environment(VCRs, cable, video games) by producing bigger and bigger must-see spectacles. You can't blame them for not producing more '70s-style dramas in the '80s because those films wouldn't have made money, just as you can't blame them for making remade shit today. If you want originality watch HBO or read a book, and resist the urge to pirate the next interesting movie that Hollywood manages to produce.

For those in the know, Robocop was inspired by both Judge Dredd and especially Deathlok (not the dumbed down 80's comic, but the classic Rich Buckler series instead.) RC was good back in the day but there's no need for a remake (well, unless you count the 3rd movie.)DL was more badass anyway and now that Marvel studios are on their way, why not produce a deathlok movie? if so they gotta play the Megadeth song: psychotron during the credits.(yes, the song is about deathlok.)Make it mutha fucking so!!
Next remake...Batman
by the_scream
Jun 11th, 2008
04:52:49 AM
Yeah, you all know what will happen. Warner Bros won't get their act together, Nolan will make another film. They'll hire a hack director to shoot the third Batman. Fans will hate it except for a bunch of traitors for who it will be "entertaining enough". Cue Batman to be put on the shelf for another five years. Then another director comes along to start all over again. Sound implausible? Fans are now calling for both X-Men and Spiderman to be rebooted even though we got at least 2 great comic book films. All of a sudden it's like X2 and Spidey 2 were never made and were a huge success. People want reboots. Eventually the studios will listen and we'll be back here praising the new film until they blow the franchise all over again. Cynical?

probably the sharpest and concise satire plot point in a movie ever: - Robocop gets trashed. Modern corporate types agree to rebuild him though only by a committee of talentless and do-goody saps. He gets put back on-line with hundreds of prime directives, all missing the point of his original purpose, with the aim of pleasing everyone and all parties.

He promptly fails at everything he does and goes nuts. Whenever a film studio agrees to reboot a franchise I think of the meeting room scene in Robocop 2.

Please, tell me why you were surprised. Practically everything from '80s and early '90s pop culture is getting made or remade for movies and TV shows. Since when does Hollywood try anything new?

Why not make a third sequel which takes place however many years after 3? Make it like Indy IV with an aging Murphy dealing with the advanced technology of the times. Also you can have him being replaced by a successful 'Robocop 2.0' and have him face his mortality as a machine...

Robocop is not good simply because it's Robocop, it's all down to Verhoeven. Same goes for Terminator and Cameron. You can't just slap a franchise title on something and expect it to be good. Like if they did a Ghostbusters reboot, the whole point of that movie was Ackroyd, Murray and Ramis together.

Oh my god, did I miss something. They are remaking Robocop!? Or is it some reboot/retconned sequel? What?! Why!? Damm you Hollywood, you have five seconds to comply, stop remaking classic movies (whether 20, 30, or 50 years old!) and- well write new stories!? Don't get me wrong, I still love movies, but these days quality seems to be shaky and lots of comic book movies, and remakes. But then again, one comes across a film like Children of Men, gives one hope!!!! Anway- don't do this Robocop thing!

What, haven't you seen the excellent "Robocop: Prime Directives"? That wonderful series in which Robocop's son is an OCP executive and Robocop has a black partner who gets turned into a black Robocop, after which the pair fight a Halloween-costumed guy and a computer network?

"Robocop" was actually a prescient satire, and it and "War, Inc." have more in common than one would think. "War Inc." suggests a further privatization of the military, sort of a Haliburton-Blackwater no-bid plus one. "Robocop", clever vision that it was, suggested the movement toward privatization that characterized the Reagan era(and that would later characterize the Bush years)would result in even corporate-run law enforcement. Is the law enforcement provided by the "security farms" in Iraq, for example, that far of a cry from OCP? In any case, without the bite of Verhoeven's singular vision, and more importanltly, without the bad motherfucking force that is Clarence Boddicker, the remake is as dead as that dude that got covered by chemical waste. Can you fly, remake?

Literally JUST picked up the anniversary DVD of this, and watched each cut once this week. Fantastic movie, still. Unless this movie has some amazing insight and jokes about the nature of recycled ideas and reboots, its unnecessary. The movie could be self aware that it is a superfluous remake. Somehow, I don't think they're going to be that clever about it.

but I doubt anyone could do a movie version any justice. None of the dudes really look like they used to, especially Ramis. And the humor that made Ghostbusters fun to begin with was humor typical of younger 20-30s guys, and bachelor guys at that.

Fuck a Robocop remake. Doesn't need one. As for the reflection in the helmet, it looks like the Robo2 reflection of Cane (see Robocop 2 poster) with the arm raised up.

Amazon.com has the Robocop 20th Anniversary Collector's Edition DVD on sale for $10.99 plus shipping (shipping is free on $25+ order). This is the two-disc set that is packaged in a cool silk-screened metal clamshell instead of a standard plastic clamshell. Disc One includes the theatrical cut of Robocop and a bunch of cool extras, and Disc Two includes the extended, extra bloody and violent cut of the film (and a bunch of cool extras).

I've owned this for several months, and it is an awesome presentation of the film!

How does a remake "ruin" the original movie? Even if this new RoboCop sucks (which I doubt it will) it doesn't mean that the original RoboCop is any less great than it already is. You people are fucking stupid whiny pieces of shit. Grow the fuck up and move out of your mothers' basements.

And this poster has me thinking it will be very lame. To all these Hollywood hacks involved- Your move creep.

but I just have to say that Robocop fucking sucks. Yeah, it's intelligent and clever, but the execution is fucking shit, same as Starship Troopers. The script is too subtle to be effective, so if fucking scholars and DVD commentaries didn't confirm the social and political undertones, you'd never know they were intentional. You'd just constantly wonder if they were trying to be smart or were just making a really fucking stupid movie. I originally thought the latter.

Therefore, Robocop sucks. Oh and I do agree that a remake would suck even more. Probably.
