They Need to Remember...

That the Muppets started out as being for adults. That was what made the Muppet Show great. That was what made The Muppet Movie and the Great Muppet Caper Great. They forgot that, and we got Muppets in Space and that godawful Wizard of Oz thing. They also need to remember that humans should not be the stars of the films. That's what ruined Muppet Treasure Island for me. It should focus on the Muppets with humans in cameo roles. And "Rainbow Connection" is one of the greatest songs ever composed for the screen. It's the theme song of my generation.

In its first four weeks of release, Forgetting Sarah Marshall grossed over $50 million. As of June 1, it has grossed $60 million. It only cost $30 million to make. I'm not saying that it's the greatest film, or the funniest film, ever made, but it was hardly a trainwreck. Speed Racer, in its first four weeks, only made $40 million. So, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, a movie with a relatively unknown cast, made more money than the special effects laden extravaganza Speed Racer. I think that's respectable.

Danny, where you getting that it tanked? As someone already said it made almost triple its budget (budget of 30 million, made 61 million in USA and another 24 million on top of that world wide) and odds are will do great on DVD... The movie came out on April 18th, and it has been a top 10 movie all the way until this weekend when it was bumped off. FSM one of the best movies of the year so far, and probably JUDDco.'s best movie. 40 year old virgin and knocked up were overrated and not as funny. Superbad was great... but FSM even better.

Since we've all started referring to a series of movies as a "franchise" (as if we worked for the corporations that funded those movies), why not go the extra mile and start calling movies "commodities". I was going to talkback some drivel, but that sums it up perfectly. Frankly, looking back at the old series and the first two or three movies (heck, even Muppets Christmas Carol), I think they have something of a deep, almost nihilistic, nearly cynical edge to them. I think about all the Muppets that eat other Muppets, sometimes at a whim, as well as all the random chaos that always threatens (or simply does) undermine the best intentions of Kermit and co. Kermit is at his best in my opinion when he's either the calm center of the madness or (maybe even better) teetering on insanity in the face of random catastrophes.
"It isn't easy being green," "Rainbow Connection," Gonzo's absolutely fantastic "I'm Going to Go Back There Someday" can come off as watered-down crap when they're set in some kind of sugar-high, super-fun-kid-friendly setting.
Play those same songs amidst the darkness of uncertainty and doubt, and they become powerful affirmations of the spirit in the face of adversity and doom. (How's that for drivel?) That's what I love about Muppets, and why I think it endures when all the other "you're okay, I'm okay" weak BS we otherwise feed kids won't survive the dispelling realities of growing up.

Not only is Williams working on the stage version of "Emmett Otter's Jug Band Christmas", he's rumored to have been working on a stage version of POTP. I'm guessing that working on the musical version of "Happy Days" has brought his songwriting side out again. Speaking of POTP, DePalma's writing the script for the remake, and I'd actually like to see Williams collaborate with some bands such as My Chemical Romance (Who take a line from "Beauty and the Beast" for their song "Sleep") for it...

Muppets take Manhattan is one of those films I used to watch over and over and over when I was a kid. The Great Muppet Caper, too (Charles Grodin was kind of cool until he started doing those colon-sucking 'Beethoven" movies). I even had a subscription to Muppets magazine. They had all sorts of faux movie posters in every month's issue, with muppets interjected into the lead roles of well known films. As a burgeoning cinephile, it made a connection with me. I guess that's probably one of the best things about the muppets, their comedy is predicated on a well-established and respectful knowledge, and admiration, of Hollywood's grand history.

This is some unexpectedly cool news. A new muppet movie, eh? With Paul Williams writing new music for it? I'll be there. So will more people than its producers expect. Especially if its done well, with good music, laugh-out-loud funny scenes, and Muppets as the stars.

I think what hurt "Muppets take Manhattan" a little bit was the young hipness factor. "Let's make it for kids, not for adults," the makers said. It wasn't a horrible film but compared to the Jim Henson films, it didn't quite reach the same plateau, in my opinion.

And boy, if Paul Williams can capture some magic by writing new songs as playful and moving as "The Rainbow Connection," that would great too.

This last part probably won't happen, but I'm happy they're making the film.

I agree that not liking a movie doesn't make it a flop. FSM did decent business and got good reviews (especially for a movie of its kind). gotham, when PROVEN wrong about the critics, you couldn't even admit it, you just came back with some lame comment that was unrelated. Grow up, and accept that you're wrong about FSM (not that you think it was bad, which of course, you can have your own opinion, but in calling it a failure).

was in the original Muppet Movie. For that reason alone, it will never be matched.

I don't understand how you can say FSM got mostly negative reviews. It has a 67 on Metacritic, an 85 on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 7.8 on IMDB. cost $30 million to make and has, so far, grossed over $60 million domestically. I saw the film; it was good, not great. But Christ...it's not the shitfest you're making it out to be. And Jason Segel was fucking hilarious on "Freaks and Geeks."
