Movie a Day, Gone, Script Girl... this site is seriously losing the plot. How about doing something worthwhile, like having more set reports, or interviews or script reviews ... wouldn't it be great if one of you AICNers became "embedded" on the set of a film and was able to post weekly updates. Please, just remmeber that when you post something it should be both "cool" and "news". Thinking up excuses to run more Amazon ads is not cool.

We're still doing all of the above. In the last 2 weeks I've been to Romania and LA and back home... I've done two set visits and one studio visit for a specific movie. I'm arranging a Mel Brooks interview right now and have completed 4 interviews for Hulk. My regular workload hasn't stopped.

If you don't like the movie a day thing, then don't read it. The response to the article so far, in talkback and email, has been overwhelmingly positive, so it's not going to stop any time soon. If it's not your thing, that's cool, but if you don't dig on it, then why come in and piss on everybody else who likes it?

I despise Spirit and think the entire idea of making into some sort of Sin City ripoff is a joke.

That said, are you telling me that in AICN there shouldn't be any threads involving Spirit, Watchmen, DArk Knight, John Faveur (or however it's spelled) interviews over the direction for Iron man 2, or any of the other myriad news stories that are out today?

Look, I don't mind this sort of movie-a-day stuff, but when combined with the Gone crap, Script girl garbage, and the total lack of anything involving news reports, well, all I have to say is that this site is becomming less about cool NEWS and more about cool EDITORIALS.

Sorry to rant guys, its just getting kind of annoying lately. Maybe I just need more coffee creamer...

you're right... if i dont like it i shouldn't come in this TB just to be negative... but what with Gone and Scriptgirl is just seems this site is veering away6 from what made it great. I guess it's just a question of positioning. If things like this were in a separate column where people culd discuss film in general then I (and others.. i'm not alone) would have felt more comfortable with it... but by putting it in the "latest news" section it seems a bit off.. ... it's a shame that the first time any AICNer has directly replied to me is when i've been a negative prick. oh well.

I understand where you're coming from... In our defense, I posted two news stories this morning (not exactly regular for a Saturday, when the business is closed)... I saw the poster art come in. That's something we should post, definitely, but the Iron Man 2 interview is old (and I'm working on our own exclusive chat, not a link to someone else's set visit). As for Spirit, I posted an exclusive set visit report (got my own day on the set) and have had the first word on a lot of Spirit stuff since it has been in production. I agree it's an interesting project.

Just because a news article doesnt interest you or me doesn't mean it isn't newsworthy. And last time I checked, here at AICN, Spirit, Dark Knight, Watchmen, and Iron Man seem to generate a lot of interest with other people. Why, just take a look at other web sites to check out their leading stories. Every single one of them are posting the stuff I provided links to as their top articles. Its akin to reading about Hillary Clinton's concession speech on the covers of New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Chicago Tribune, but on the cover of USA Today--puppies and what they mean to children.

I see what you're saying, but there is no other section... the layout of the page means all the news hits in the same place, with Coax getting its own sidebar. If we do any more sections where original stories run then we're in a big danger of overcomplicating the main page, which is what has hurt my ability to enjoy some other movie news sites. This is how we've posted articles like this since the beginning of the site, so I don't think it holds any water saying what we're doing now is veering away from what we've done before.

I understand that I'm just some nobody from a talkback thread, but whenever I see news about upcomming films on other websites, my first instinct is to fly to AICN and check out everyone's take on the subject, be it yours, Mori's, Harry's, and, of course, the really cool cats on these talkback threads. Its just kind of disconcerting to see all thse other topics out there, and upon my entrance to today's AICN page, teen tiger beat novels, script girl's tits, and reactions to classical films.

He, Mori and a few others are the only ones still active in this newly-shriveling husk of Ain't It Crap News. I think that he's on the right track, reviewing the older stuff that so often gets overlooked in this chew-'em-up, spit-'em out society. His column allows those who haven't seen under appreciated flicks like 'Hole in the Head' and 'Asphalt Jungle' to see for themselves if these dusty boxes on the shelves of Wal-Mart's dollar bin are worth checking out.. Given a choice between Quint, Capone, & Mori up against 'Gone', I'm picking the guys. At least they know how to write intelligent, witty and coherant sentences...otherwise it's "Farewell and adieu to ye fair Spanish ladies, Farewell and adieu to ye ladies of Spain..."

It's about movies and there's nothing wrong with looking back at the classics.

What we have a problem with is crap like "Gone" for which there has still been no explanation. You have Mirajeff coming out, clearly hurt over how he has been treated and how the site has ended up, and the site is being filled with the stench of corporate pandering.

It's one thing to have links to Amazon...we realise that bills have to be paid and the links lead to movie deals more often than not. But it's another thing to pass off advertising as an article.

Either Harry or Merrick needs to come out and not only explain why the "Gone" chapters are being posted, but they also need to apologise. Every talkback is going to be dominated by this subject until something is done.

It's a new low for AICN and it may not survive.

It was mentioned here and the the Gone talkback that some comments about Gone and why it was being serialized here were posted in the "Mess with the Zohan" talkback. Well... that articles not on the front page, not on the cool news list, and a search for Sohan only results in an article from last February? Okay, so H likes a book and the idea of running a serialized novel on the site, that's cool. Someone expresses an opinion on it and the whole article gets taken down? That seems like an overreaction.

Time for Harry to pop up and make a statement or something
by palimpsest
Jun 8th, 2008
05:39:38 AM
It's his website and everything (though not if current rumours are to be believed) so he can post what the hell he likes. But there's something seriously amiss. Maybe just a series of misjudgments (did he really think that GONE serialisation was going to wash with anybody?), maybe a need to turn an additional buck. But too much of the site seems now to be devoted to hawking stuff: Harry's weekly DVD roundup serves little other purpose, for instance. He's almost abandoning reviewing movies altogether, merely giving them his stamp of approval. The ScriptGirl thing is just laughable and cynical at the same time; an energy drink commercial brought to you by two mainstays of geek culture - movie news of dubious provenance and unattainable breasts. So Harry - if you need a holiday, recuperation time, whatever - go do that thing and come back better. If you've lost interest in the site, or need to make more money, then that's fine too, but maybe a little upfront honesty about it would be useful. If you're selling up and moving on (hanging around as a salaried writer or otherwise) then tell us. It's OK, we'll understand. If you're working under a non-disclosure agreement, then a) WTF and b) get someone else to break the story. AICN's all about the love for the movies and the genre TV, and the range of opinions expressed by both the main contributors and the talkback regulars and the semi-occasional drop-ins like me are testament to that. Yeah, it's you're church, but we're the congregation. And we come here because the fellowship of the thing. But if you're gonna preach stuff we don't want to hear, we'll just go somewhere else. Hope that wasn't too much of a rant!

Not all the films will be all this early stuff. Unfortunately for the column, my knowledge of film covers most 80s cheese and 70s exploitation (thanks to the Alamo Drafthouse and my own personal thirst for horror and fine aged cheese), but there will be a few, like the horror hospital movie starring Shatner called Visiting Hours and a whole ton of Mario Bava movies. However, for the next couple of weeks you'll see a lot of '40s-'60s movies since I'm connecting them all through a common star, director, etc... which has me checking out a ton of noir, some gangster, some musicals and some sci-fi flicks.

I'm looking forward to getting to more varied material, too, but I am also loving getting caught up on these classics. At the end of the month, it looks like, I'll hit a run of '70s and '80s movies.
