...that eerily presaged every Jud Apatow movie ever made (fat loser nerd falls for hot chick who actually digs him back). Why would the Federation store all their knowlege on one easily, destroyable planetoid. That's the Library of Alexandria Problem... all it takes in one nutcase with a torch (or phaser bank) to lobotomize an entire civilization. The "Wahhhrrr whrrr waaah-ahhhr-aaahhhhr" voices were pretty creepy, though.

Kirk Fucks them into submission. James T. Kirk Intergalactic Cocksman makes Bond look like a piker!!! That Chrissy Pine has him some BBBBBBBBBBBIIIIIIIIIIGGGGGGG shoes to fill. If they try to make Kirk a more sensative faggy politically correct modern guy this movie will be fucked , more fucked than the dozens of hot guest stars Shatner fucked in his trailer!!

It's one of two Doohan-heavy episodes, and Jimmy does his best, but it's a typical season three episode. That's all I have to say.

Why is it that so many of these so-called 'remastered' effects are so poor, and in fact, many of the ORIGINAL blurry effects look more real and less like computer-game graphics than the 'new improved' effects that have been created 40 years later?

you sound like you might be around my age (50) but even if not, i agree. i recently saw Appleseed Dux Mecana (or however its spelled) and while i appreciated the effects (like a video game in detail only with the interactivity of a controller) it all goes back to the story. If story is too convuluted and nonsensical no effects in the world can save it. In the case of TOS, just the opposite is true: if the writing is great, embelishing it with newer effects while not the end of the world, doesn't really bring anything to it. In Paramount's case, it's another example of them milking the cash cow (or beating the dead horse.) I was a fan as a kid and have the original series in DVD, old effects and all and i'm prefectly happy with it (and i waited quite a while untill the price on Amazon came down to a reasonable amount. So if you already have it, enjoy it the way the original filmaker's (like Robert Justman intended.) He's watching you from heaven....

of a controller." Appleseed also reminded me of another animation of a year ago filmed in black and white instead of bright colors like Appleseed, weighed down once again with "Matrix"-like exposition. Again interesting visuals but not something you remember much over time (which seems to be a big problem these days.) Everything is "Short Attention Span" theater for the kiddies out there. I noticed though that not all Star Trek can stand the test of time. I tried to watch bits n pieces when scifi channel played 4 eps of TNG on monday and found the acting so stiff and the pacing (editing) so labored and slow as to be unwatchable. Everybody has different opinons though. My sister's younger then me and she thinks TNG is the superior show. I say TOS is. go figger....
Why new effects?

I was under the impression that one of the main reasons for the new effects was because the old ones looked particularly shitty in High Def. The matte jobs and strings were too apparent. I don't really mind the new touch ups. Some are kind of fun, some are kinda lame just like they were first time around! But, it doesn't deter from the storytelling to me...
So, are they also CGI tweaking Mira Romaine's hair so it's not h

Gimme fuzzy effects done with real models and strings over CGI anyday. The human eye ( well both of mine) can just pick out CGI straight away. It doesn't trick us in the same way. Looks too computerey.

As a couple of posts have mentioned , the older grainy model shot stuff , actualy looks a whole lot more convincing than the cgi.Especially that planet with bits stuck on it in the bottom right of the second pic!!thats poor. But I like that the guys doing this are being subtle and rather respectful , with their *updates*.Apart from ESB , the special Editions of star wars , show just how easily this stuff can get out of hand.

Yes, I'm a fifty-something fan and love the show as is. (Or, would that be was?) Still, if they're going to rev up the effects, then go all the way. Part of my problem is they're dumbing down the CGI polish as a wink to the old style effects. At least take one or two of the major episodes and really try to make them look like they were made today. The updates stand out (in a bad way) because they're done in little splotches. It's sort of like having Salvador Dali touch up just Mona Lisa's hair and nothing else. It looks incomplete.
I don't know. It looks like a video game.

I just can't honestly say that the new effects at least for this one are an improvement or more real. The textures make things pop out but they also seem to lack any kind of subtleties and screams, I am cgi!

Shari Lewis Wrote An Epiosode Of Star Trek?
by Red Dawn Don

Shari Lewis wrote an episode of STAR TREK. Well that officialy blows my mind. Does Fran from KUKLA, FRAN AND OLLIE have any Sci-Fi writing credits? SHARI LEWIS was one HOT BABE. She would have made a nice STAR TREK mini-skirt wearer. SHARI was Jewish, I wonder if SHATNER thought he would not have had any luck bedding her. On a similar note, ELVIS PRESLEY claimed to have slept with all his MOVIE female co-stars except for one. This is such a smart thing to say. It gives EP denialblity while full out bragging. SHARI's wiki profile said she was in an episode of THE MAN FROM UNCLE. I am gonna keep my eyes out for that episode. Back in the 1960's, I got THE MAN FROM UNCLE toy gun set for X-mas.
Old effects better than new effects???

Are you folks who say that the old effects look better than the new effects ON CRACK? Can anyone honestly say that that "Original" picture looks better than the "Remastered" picture? In many cases, the biggest problem with the old episodes was the poor special effects. Many had good stories, writing, and acting, but the effects were often very shaky. I love the updated effects, as long as they're not re-editing the content to make it more PC or some such nonsense.

True, Kirk was an intergalactic cocksman...but not during his academy days. He says this in the first season ep Shore Leave....he was the serious young cadet..."positively GRIM".

Thus the reason Ron Moore decided to make Picard the exact opposite when he wrote Tapesty...a hell raiser at the academy.

Oh, and if you had the chance to see the late 90s SciFi channel's extended ST:TOS, there were a couple of interviews with chicks that guested on the series. They said that Shat would kinda show up in their dressing rooms or trailers, claiming that his electric razor wouldn't work in his room or whatever, only to find him a couple minutes later on top of them humping like the dog in heat he was (is). Not that this is a bad thing, y'know....."Hey, my 'lectric razor isn't working....c'mere you....GRUNT-GRUNT-GRUNT"

in "Space Seed" or "Wrath of Khan" does not need any digital enhancement. Khan shoulda been a running villain who took over worlds and waged an interplanetary civil war against the Federation. Not that the movie wasn't great as is...
