I can totally see today's U.S. government staging a manned mars landing. Anything to take our attention off the flagging economy, the useless war in Iraq, and the fact that the quality of life in general isn't so wonderful. I'm surprised the Bush administration hasn't done it already in an effort to manufacture something positive for his legacy. Plus, NASA has a couple exploded shuttles and a bunch of dead astronauts to save face for, and current missions aren't generating much excitement (yeah, I know about Phoenix, yawn) we're not as far along as I'm sure most people thought we'd be by now

i agree with Abominable above. I think a remake of this could work. Of course a remake of Manchurican Candidate could have worked and that didn't make it so. Still while most remakes suck a few work (The Thing, Hills Have Eyes) even if in a very different way from the original (and not always as good). For instance i really enjoyed the remake of Assault On Precinct 13. It was not even close to being as great as the original - a film i love and own and still shocks me at the moment the little girl gets more than she bargained for at the ice-cream truck - i mean, i'd never watch the remake again, but for the 90 minutes or so it played it entertained me. I find it funny so many people jump all over these things just going Hollywood sucks, stop remaking stuff, and then get excited for QT's Inglorious Bastards - a remake. Noone finds it strange that plays are reinterpreted again and again by different people, sometimes successfully, sometimes not, so why shouldn't that be the case for films?

Or maybe more of a re-imagining? Saw Capricorn One in the theater (yes, I'm that old) and loved it. A remake might work. But I wonder if they cast 3 big names for the astronauts would the producers pussy-out in killing them off? Get David Fincher to direct this and I'm in. I wonder if they will feel the need to change the way the astronauts "die". Having them "killed" in re-entry might put off your audience ("too soon"). Same with if the rocket explodes on take-off. Since the rest is faked how will the astronauts "die"?

Yes, when the bottom line in money, nothing is off limits. But the films that I am listing I believe are so iconic that Hollywood would not remake them because people would not pay to see a remake. The original is so ingrained in our cultural psyche that we would automatically react against a remake. Perhaps you disagree with this idea though. Do you think there are such iconic films that are for all intents and purposes remake proof?

I love the original and have owned the DVD for years, watched it multiple times. That said, there is plenty to be fixed with it and a remake, if done well, could improve on it. The 70's sensibility, while cool, definitely is cornball in some places. This is not Elliot Gould's finest work by a long shot. He seemed to be in "I'm the top film star of the day, baby" mode. Someone who could actually play a gritty, down-and-out reporter would be good here. Think Robert Downey Jr (ala Zodiac, although you probably wont get him now after Ironman's box office) All the 'effects' were practical and looked great, and I'm sure in the new version we'll have all-CG flyovers of the shuttle etc, that will be kind of cool but still CG-y fake. That said, they use the classic 70's "speed up the film" effect atrociously in the Elliot-Gould's-brake-lines-hav e-been-cut / car-out-of-control action scene. It's laughable now. The helicopters pursuing the pilots at the end, turning to "talk" to each other is goofy. They could more realistically be using spy satellites combined with more heli's out there searching for them, and the astronauts using their wits to avoid heli and satellite advanced detection technique. That could be cool. Finally, getting rid of some of the unwelcome 70's glacial pacing techniques could be good. I'm no fan of quick-MTV-style cuts, but do we need 3 minutes of Elliot Gould moping around his apartment? And like a previous poster mentioned, the ending freeze frame of the guys running through the graveyard at the end is just hokey. All in all, a great movie, but not an untouchable classic that should never be remade. If they do a good job, it could be a helluva good remake.

The fact there are people in this talkback saying "hmm..yeah this could be good" is the reason they keep doing them. It's not so much Hollywood's fault, than it is the jags that say "yeah! sounds good!" Because there are enough people out there to fork over the dollars to make the remake worth it, when instead they should be going to the video store and renting the damn original. Oh but that might damage their spoiled little eyes with outdated FX, or be too boring without the smash cuts.
