What the HELL is wrong with game's plot. It would have been actually pretty amazing if they had stuck it in a great game, unfortunately all they had left was a mediocre shooter for it. Why fuck up a bunch of badass Heist Scenarios, for some lame Microchip Bullshit. That would be like making a DOOM movie, not setting it on mars and not instead of having Demons, just have regular old zombies or something. I mean what is the fucking point? Why go to the trouble of calling it DOOM at all!?

by JimmyJoe RedSky
Jun 3rd, 2008
06:42:09 PM
that would be cool - maybe the show "24" killed it - splinter cell, great game franchise - but then so is hitman, resident evil and silent hill - but they translated into less than stellar movies - the potential is always there for a good movie with some games, but there always seems to be a disconnect - they end up looking slick (hitman, silent hill) but feel kinda hollow and bereft of something - maybe the viewers physical involvement - the biggest appeal of video games is the interactivity - you are involved literally - movies are passive - there watched, not played - the interactivity of a game overpowers its lameness - for example - resident evil 4 is an awesome near perfect game experience, but imagine just watching it as a movie - same characters plot etc - pretty riidiculous

In case you didn't know, ZDNet fired one of their reviewers because he dared give this game a low score... after all the fabulous marketing dollars were spent. I guess they have yet more marketing dollars to spend, though.

Kane and Lynch was pretty damned good. The gameplay wasn't without issues, but the characters were very really well written. The action set-ups were great and the violence was intense and relentless. That's all you need for a kick-ass video game movie: Great characters, great violence, and a simple story. The movie needs a gritty ,wobbly, video camera type quality with long, brisk takes ala Children of Men... and hitchy editing and color saturation used ONLY when Lynch is having his psychotic episodes. I really like Bruce Willis for this. John Malkovich would be better than Billy Bob, but Billy Bob cleans up really nice and he'll definitely do. He'll need to take some serious crazy pills for this role though. Simon Crane for director is an excellent choice. He's a stunt coordinator who worked for Doug Liman. He'll create some really slick gun play sequences and fun background destruction scenes. Hopefully Crane puts on a pair of Doug Liman's pants and really knocks this one out of the park.

...that all video games are worthy of being adapted into movies? The "content" of these games are mostly just barely disguised rip-offs of stories and characters from actual legitimate artistic media that are plagiarized by autistic glass eyed coders for use as embarrassingly trite exposition to spur socially inept shut-in underachievers into pressing the correct combination of buttons over and over and over again until the same game is released with new cover art as the "sequel." Video games are fine for what they are, which is a generally amusing way to kill several hours sitting on one's ass, but as far as art or story go, even compared to media like comic books or television or DTV comedy, video games are the nutritional equivalent of cotton candy. I know this entire post is an exercise in futility, but I hope that some day they start making actual movies again. In that respect, thank god for Uwe Boll.

by Bass Bastardson
Jun 4th, 2008
01:01:43 AM
I love videogames. I love movies. I do not like videogame movies. And the reason isn't just because they've all been made by hacks. The problem with videogame movies is that, if they stray from the source material they lose the fans and a large part of what made the game special in the first place, but if they remain too faithful to the source material, what you are left with is something that you've already seen but now with the element of interactivity removed - essentially a two hour cut scene recapping the events of the game. Maybe some super-genius will manage to find the proper balance, but I doubt it.
Video Games kill time... unlike Films, TV & Comics then ?
by G100
Jun 4th, 2008
01:25:15 AM
There's more creativity in Grand Theft Auto 4 than a thousand Fat suit "comedies" or by the numbers chick flicks.

I'm not claiming high art for all VideoGames but we've all heard this crap before. Oddly enough for Movies when they first flickered insolently onto an unsuspecting public & deeply suspicious Theatre and Literature obsessed elite and indeed the same type of hysteria accompanied Comic books early popularity because they were rotting the Brains of impressionable children way back when.

Are all VideoGames well produced and employ a great deal of creative talent ? Like fuck they are.

However there are more than enough extremely well regarded Games by now that surely this same tired & outdated argument can be put to rest until the NEXT upstart Mediaform appears.

Face it most Movies and Comics and yes, even most plays & books are lucky to be average and more often than not just plain shit given the sheer amount of total numbers released into the world, so lets not pretend crap was somehow invented with the VideoGame or the VideoGame Movie.

Storywise VideoGames are still wrestling with incorporating a complex narrative into freeform worlds balancing how much the narrative can change depending on events. Movies and Comics DO NOT have that problem. So it's no surprise that compeling narratives are still rare.

Comic book adaptations in case you haven't noticed have been usurping "actual" Movies to an ever sillier degree with a Plethora of 2nd and EVEN 3rd generation re-imaginings of the same Comic Properties. I personally don't mind that too much but if you can make a Movie out of a Theme Park Ride or a Comic then why be so snotty about VideoGames ?

Uwe Boll is a laughably obvious cheap hack. Just because almost every VideoGame Movie has been handled by the bottom feeders and the chronically inept like him doesn't mean the source is at fault.

The more reasonable explanation is that shit Directors, Producers and Actors will make a shit Movie whether you give them Macbeth or Monkey Island as the source material.

Whereas real talent can make a good Movie out of almost anything.

I know, I grew up on the stuff too, and spent plenty on quarters and consoles, but I get pre-emptively irked as only a talkbacker can when I see Walter B wasting the finite screen time God has granted him by signing on to play a video game character lifted from characters in better movies that didn't have the burden of being licensed video game content, and I just needed to vent my spleen to the only place that caters to people who waste their time talking about what increasingly amount to wastes of time in general, so I scrolled down and here we are.

Ego. The problem being, that the fucking idiots that are doing the adpataion do not respect their source material. If they did they wouldn't rape them as badly as they do. I can do this with most of them but I'll use Resident Evil.

The basic plot of Resident Evil the game is fucking simple. Elite SWAT team pitch up at mansion in the middle of nowhere. Turns out it is infested by Zombies, one of the team may/ may not know something. Eventually all is revealed and it is some lab for a shadowy corporation developing a very bad virus.

And what did that dick Anderson give us in his wisdom: Fucking Amnesia. In his attempt to reinvent the wheel he managed to ignore the "Survival Horror" of the game in favour of some neutered PG-13 crap. Despicable.

Resident Evil was actually rated R, so the PG-13 crap part of your arguement doesn't work. Of course the rest of it does and it only got worse in the sequels. As for Kane and Lynch, the game had potential but was not executed on. The gameplay was kind of wonky and the AI was crap. That said the story wasn't to bad and could make a decent movie. Then again it sounds like they are adandoning the story from the game in favor of what ever they can make up.

The fuckin directors! Get a real director for a change. Not some FX guy or some stunt coordinator, for fucks sake.

The other thing is that games don't really have stories. They have plots, but they don't develop story and character the way that a book or movie does. I'm not badmouthing games. It's just that the medium itself doesn't really allow space for story and character the way that other mediums do. If it did, you'd probably end up with a boring game. Games are action-based first and foremost.

You'll get no argument from me about this particular one. And the only plausable reason I can see for Brucie signing on is a promise of a great deal of cash somewhere along the way.

Because the K&L VideoGame had a curious "strategy" in that there was a shameless amount of cash spent on a massive advertisement blitz, Hype and just buying good reviews from compliant game journalists. Problem was the actual product i.e. the K&L VideoGame REALLY wasn't worth a fraction of said Hype and was, to put it mildly, a bit on the poor side.

Hence Mad Hype and Huge names being associated with this film already are frankly no big surprise if any of the same dirtbag goons are involved. So I'd watch out for plants and suspiciously "Glowing" reviews if they go the same route as K&L Game because despite the games manifest inadequacies it sold plenty due to the strategy & frenzied hype surrounding it.

So by all means save Bruce from this pile of fetid fecal matter, but be warned it's no guarantee he'll find his form in any other Movie anytime soon.

Oh and why am I wasting MY time ? I simply tire of the same trite stereotypes and kneejerk sweeping generalisations being trotted out for VideoGames and anyone or anything associated with them.

The game was a pretty standard third person shooter, and forgettable at best. I do recall that Kane's wife and child were held hostage, to force the character to achieve missions. But a stolen microchip? Does this take place in 1984?

And as much as I despise TV show adaptations (besides The Untouchables, have there been any good ones recently?), why not just develop the old Robert Wagner series "It Takes A Thief"? I thought Will Smith's production company had it. It could be a slick, classy, heck maybe even witty, cat burglar-type story.

Seriously. When has this idea ever failed? Except with Super Mario Bros. And Street Fighter. And Mortal Kombat. And Resident Evil. And Doom. And Hitman. (I'd mention everything Uwe Boll has been a part of, but those projects were screwed more by the director than the fact that they were based on video games.) Wow. Holy fuck! Maybe video games DON'T make great movies! Oh, well. I'm sure the studio will keep it a kid-friendly PG-13.
