Because you seem to have a genuine affinity for a lot of Marvel's properties. I've never understood how people can simultaneously love those characters and watch a writer twist them into something they fundamentally are not without even the slightest bit of justification all to fit a horribly obvious and lazily written political allegory. You just can't have one AND the other.

Because with this being a success and believe it or not the SATC movie making 55 million opening weekend makes the case to studios that R rated films can make money. BTW, Universal looks like they are going to have a good Summer. Sarah Marshall, Baby Mama, The Strangers, and now Hulk, Hellboy, Wanted, and Mummy 3. Good position to be in.

Are you guys fucking blind? There's more cool (but totally wacked out other world "yeah right"!) moments in that trailer than any other film this year. Yeah, it may not be shakespeare, but if you want to see a action packed "ride" movie this summer, this has to be on the top of your list. And the first person to bring up the matrix, needs to be kicked in the nuts with a steel tipped toe cap.

The carvings, the glow ... firing them out of that old gun next to his rifle; it's almost like they're magical bullets or something. It reminds me of the way they handled the "caster shells" in the anime series OUTLAW STAR. (I always thought those were cool.) That's probably coincidental. What's weird though, is that I've read the comic, and I don't remember there being anything special about the bullets at all. (Other than the fact that he could evidently fire dozens and dozens of them in less than a second, without reloading.)

I've read the script for Wanted, as you probably have to, and it is one of the most awful things I have ever read. If you're a fan of the comic, I can assure you that you WILL HATE THIS MOVIE. It is an utter travesty what they've done to the property. All this movie is is a few of Millar's one liners (most altered) and basic plot points manipulated into a new Die Hard stunt style movie. It is AWFUL on ever single level. And Harry, the Hulk being incredible? Give me and everyone else a break. That thing will be lucky if it escapes being a green shit stain on your underwear by the time people really start seeing it.

I really appreciated the guy letting us know how much of a loser he is by Googling himself. In actuality, "Wesley Gibson" returns about 519,000 search results. I love a good rags to riches story and when people discover secret talents that let them into new awesome secret agent worlds, but this looks really ridiculous. The only thing it has going for it is the bullet curve thing, and even that is kinda lame. Plus, I really don't feel like sitting through two hours of watching this guy try to live up to his Father's legacy, taking crap for it, and then wowing us in the end when he finally does. I am going to pass!

Also, if you don't believe me that I've read these scripts, Harry, how about the love story centering around Abe and the Princess and the scene of Abe and Hellboy drinking beers talking about women before they get invaded. The final scenes had him trying to kill Jolie and her 'client' in the limo. I really hope this means that she's supposed to be a 'good guy' and the organization is truly evil instead of the other way around. They already got rid of the superhero stuff, which I understand and don't mind, but turning the guy into a hero defeats the essential appeal of the property. It should be about an angry guy who makes a conscious decision to be an evil bastard. Nonetheless it still looks like it could be a fun action movie, only slightly more predictable than I expected.

Also, "Mark Millar Licks Goats!" ;)

The reason why I think this movie looks fucking terrible is that they COULD have made a faithful adaptation of the comic with all the action and crazy shit and could have actually made a credible excuse for "curving bullets" and whatever other crazy shit they wanted to do. The other thing they could have easily done was take the baseline concept of the book (ordinary guy discovers he has a superhuman ability to end lives), and just made a movie like that without calling it Wanted. Before I read the book (which was about a week ago, to be totally honest), I just wasn't interested in the movie at all. It pisses me off now because it looks like they took the single, exact wrong way to make the movie.

I loved the comic, so I wanted to hate this movie, but it looks pretty badass. Yeah, I wish they would have been superheroes instead of assassins, but I think that might not have sold so well. As jaded as I am with hollywood, I accept that a "new" assassin movie will fare better than a "new" superhero movie. A lot of regular people, (non-film/comic fans) are only turned on by names they know, i.e. batman, spider-man, etc. This is prabably the studios best shot at making a successful movie out of WANTED. Timur Bekmambetov has my f*#^$&@cking blessing with this movie. f*#^$&@ck all the haters, American action is such crap, this is so much better than Rush Hour or Alien vs. Predator, we should be sucking foreign #*$^@ to make more movies. I think the film looks pretty cool adn could be an awesome action flick, but i think it's pretty pointless calling it an adaptation when the scriptwriters wrote the script for the film based off just the first issue of the comic series (hence the lack of superheroes). So really liking Millar's work is pretty irrelevent to whether you'll like the film or not.

I was born in Russia and moved here in 87. However, I retained all of the culture, includind a rabid love for old Russian films. 99% of the stuff since the fall of Communism is utter shit. The only people of talent there now are gods of old - Nikita Mikhalkov (Burnt by the Sun), Yuri Norshtein (Tale of Tales) and Zeus himself Alexei Gherman (My friend Ivan Lapshin and the soon-to-be-greatest-movie-ever -made Hard to Be God). That's it. Maybe a few half-decent directors. All others are pure shit. And I still follow Russian culture too, so I have a pretty good idea of what people think in my former country. And most of them see Timur for the tool that he is. He knows his way around CGI, big fucking deal. So, let me get this straight Harry. Just because he can rip off other much better films and then stitch the stolen stuff into a movie, makes him future God to film-geeks? Huh? Say what you want about Tarantino, but the guy proved with Reservoir Dogs that he can do a breathtaking HUMAN story AND do so in style. The only thing that is human in Timur B's films is the fact that they were made by humans. That's it. He has zero understanding of anything approaching story, ability to generate tension or any itneresting new ideas on how to do something that hasn't been done before. Even for someone who jsut steals shit from others he's pretty clueless on what to do with it. Tarantino rips from others, but the man understands film and how to recycle old into new. I tried to make it through Night Watch and almost fell asleep. Whole scenes of CGI and actors just thrown at the screen without anything to tie them to the story. If there was a story, because I sure as shit couldn't tell. And do you want to know what the biggest selling point was of that sequel he made to Irony Of Fate, a movie that's a character study done almost entirely in one location? The producers of the sequel boasted about the crazy number of the CGI that was used in the movie and how expensive everything was. This is how they tried to sell a character drama to an audience. That would have been akin to selling Reservoir Dogs on the quality of the bullet hits and the pretty color blood they used during the violent scenes. As if there was nothing else of note there. So, he is nowhere near someone who should be admired or even causally liked. He makes Joel Schumaker look like Kurosawa for Christ's sake. I know you guys get all moist for anything with violence and CGI, but give me a break already. Even stupd shit can be great to watch if it's well made. But this idiot doesn't even know how to do that. Nobody will remember him in a few years outside of the DTV crowd.

I've been trying to tell Harry that Timur's a hack for a long time. But, I can totally concede that he has a good "eye" and has picked up quite a few things from Fincher and Wachowskis. So, with some good actors (which James McAvoy certainly is) and a good script (which we will have to see about), he might actually make something that does not suck. So far, the trailers have been extremely well-crafted. I'll be there just to see if me and you are both right.

The colors, and camera angles, the action choreography were just jaw-dropping. But, apparently, that movie was a piece of shit. Now Night Watch/Day Watch/Who Gives an Fuck Watch, now THERE'S a class act! Boy, what a gift to cinema! Slow mo action, CGI-assisted stunts, Vampires, 2-second-long cuts editing! Holly shit! Where have we all been all these years? I mean, the last good action/sci-fi/horror movie that Hollywood made was The Forbidden Planet, right? Shit, sure glad ol' Timur came along just as we were losing faith in the future of movies and showed us the light! Wow. Glad to be alive to see this fucking dreammaker strut his stuff. Kubrick on his best day WISHED he had the vision and the originality that Timur has in his little pinkie! Fincher, Gilliam, Mann, Scorsese, Coppola, Friedkin and those other hacks better watch the fuck out! Here come Tim B to smoke their asses right off the goddamn screens. Wake the hell up whoever is even remotely interested in this dweeb! Tarkovsky he's not. He's not even good enough to shine Renny Harlin's shoes. And at least Harlin did make Die Hard 2 and Cliffhanger before faceplanting into irrelevance. What has Tim B done do earn this much street cred so quickly? Make a pile of screamingly terrible Z-level full-length commercials that even his own countrymen can't stand? Where is this genius coming from that I can't see? And whoever says that his movies make a lot of money is a cretin. Since when is THAT a hallmark of a brilliant film? Last I checked, most of Roland Emmerich's films made money and they are all absolutely awful. And he's at least an ok visual director, as the semi-tolerable The Patriot showed. Stop this insanity already.

This has nothing to do with this topic, but somehow I ended up in an old AICN thread for the Phantom Menace trailer. Here is what one talkbacker said: "Hey kids!!! I read the shot for shot thing at TheForce.Net and all I can Say is "Wow!!!!!" I can not wait. This is going to be a spectacular movie. From Darth Maul on the cliff to Obi Wan and Qui-Gon cutting down droids. My God it is going to be awesome. After all I've read and seen well any doubts I had are gone. Bring on those slick ships and that better technology. I am ready for it. Plus the news that George is directing the next two. AWESOME. Only a few more months and it's going to kill me. This is going to rock kids. I don't care what all of you naysayers say...because I am a true Star Wars fan and always will be there for it. May the Force be with us once more. See you later."
Thank God...

Worst American accent

by a British actor ever. This makes the hideous hybrid efforts of Jeremy Northam, Ewan McGregor etc look good. McAvoy is massively over-rated. He's good but he's not great and he is so unconvincing looking in this film (even discounting the accent) that it's laughable. Shame, I loved Night and Day Watch. I'm sure the film will at least be stylish but it feels more Matrix sequels than Matrix to me.

Ok yeah I checked IMDB and saw that he had made a film after Daywatch, I thought this was his next film after Daywatch. NOW I want to see the original movie and his movie and see what went wrong.

filmcoyote

Totally agree with you about McAvoy, at first he was just a stand in while no one could find Ewan McGregor because he was motocycling somewhere. Now it looks like Ewan took too long of a break because McAvoy seems like he is in everything now, just like Ewan was a couple of years ago. Also about the accents, I know like you read it and you think its American in the comic, but the dude who wrote it is from Scotland. Anyways I will still see this film, even though I don't care for McAvoy and Mrs. Pitt, this movie looks pretty cool for a summer movie.

Do you people keep bashing films like this, Night Watch and Day Watch were two of the best and most creative films of the last few years. It was inevitable that he was going to be given a big film and from the looks of it he had done an amazing job. There is no pleasing some people, i hope i dont sit next to any of you saddos when i'm enjoying watching the best action flick of the year. Oh and by the way; I have seen The Incredible Hulk and can confirm it is indeed "Incredible". Goodbye Ang Lee's angst ridden mess and hello mayhem!!

It's funny how people here are choosing to bash this film's accents, bullet sequences, makeup, nationalities, whatever. Talk about pussified small-mindedness. I wasn't a huge fan of "Nightwatch," but I admired its visual effects. This film, "Wanted," is the story I was waiting for Bekmambetov to make. A well-acted, character-based, young assassin coming of age story. Will he or won't he go along with the program? I think this could be a tasty film to watch.

People comparing this to "Aeon Flux" or "Ecks vs. Sever" should have their heads examined, you pussies. Seriously, you should.

I'll check this out opening day. Can't wait.

Seriously I wonder how anyone here still enjoys movies when all they do is bitch about shit.. This looks awesome.. Every scene looks great So visually played out. It seriously looks amazing. With Night Watch and day watch i'm totally behind this movie.. Plus i've been waiting for a kick ass action movie to redeem the mess that was Shoot 'Em Up.. I challenge any one of the bitchers above to make something 1/2 as good as this. then we'll talk.. Til then get a life
Oh god Shoot 'Em Up

Was probably the worst movie of 07. It was so bad that it bored me and I almost feel asleep. Clive Owen is a pussy who can't really fight. Though War was just as bad, it didn't have that cocky attitude that Shoot'Em up did, War felt like a DTV movie that somehow ended up in theaters (luckily though I didn't see it in theaters unlick Shoot'em up). Yeah I think the problem with movies last year is that there wasn't a good action movie, the closest thing we got was Die Hard 4.0 or the Condemed. Then this year started off with Rambo which pretty much put every action movie from the last 10 years to shame. GOD Shoot'em up was terrible, Pig Vomit as a villain in anything besides a silent movie where the dastardly bad guy is tying the beautiful maden to the railroad tracks just doesn't work.

Paul Giamatti when Philip Seymour Hoffman is just too busy to be in your movie.

Curvin' Bullets
by YakMalla
Jun 4th, 2008
11:47:31 AM
According to the four minutes of research I just completed, the slowest bullet leaves the gun at about 600 feet per second. The fastest a person can throw a baseball is around 100 miles per hour, which works out to about 146 feet per second.

So basically, the bullet is going 4x faster than the world's fastest shooter can move his/her arm.

Everything else about the film is totally plausible.

I forgot to add...
by YakMalla

...that, if your arm is movin' slower than the bullet is shootin', you ain't doin' no curvin'.

Yvonne Strahovski Look better than Angelina Jolie my @ss. Yvonne looks like every other blonde out there in Hollywood, even then she is a notch below most. Angelia’s butt hairs are more attractive than her period! And RetroActive You must be the “creepy” one if Angelina makes the Top 5 the last 3 years in every poll known to man. Maybe if your pale @ss gets out of your basement long enough you might see the light too. I do agree she does look a worlds better with a little meat on her.

Not really an action film it was making fun of John Woo films, if you didn't get that... Well God help you. I actually enjoyed that movie because I let go and laughed and didn't have a stick up my ass. I do agree though that Rambo put action movies to shame and this won't match in anyway. But with a summer filled with stupid comedies and only like a hand full of cool flicks I'm checking this out.

No reason for this director to be god of anything. He's just a russian film maker copying the worst bits of american film making. Can't direct actors. Relies soley on crazy CGI eye humping images that are soul less and shallow.

Will you sit behind me and fondle my D-cup breasts while I grind on you? Angelina looks like the poster girl for ano here--and I love skinny girls. It's distracting how horrible she looks. I hope she sees this and thinks the same thing, because for being pregnant she's still pretty damn thin. What is it with Brad Pitt's ladies always getting extremely underweight? I think that there's a connection there.

Oddly, the movie looks good, I say oddly because the comic book, in my opinion, was THE worst piece of crap I've ever read, and I read a lot and have a comic book collection from Akira to The Black Dragon, The Watchmen and beyond. When I read Wanted it read like it was written by a bunch of mentally challenged 13 year olds. Yeah yeah, it's suppose to be subversive and there's a message and yadda yadda yadda... but I think that's people just trying to pry past the crappy mental masturbation that passes for what might be considered (by 4th graders on the short bus) as a story. No, the language didn't shock or bother me, or any of the other so called 'twists', what bothered me was just the poor writing. Wesley started out as a great character, a true anti-hero, and the story was fantastic, but it quickly went down hill as ridiculous character after ridiculous character was introduced. I'm ranting because I wanted to like it, I love morally gray/ambiguous characters who embrace their dark elements, but not this. Nope, not Wanted. I will go see the movie. I know I'll be blasted by people who say I didn't get it and so on... but hey, I'm entitled to an opinion, and the story started out excellent but ended lamely. 'Nuff said.

It has this girl contact the hero to tell him he is special, then leaves with her to see this mentor figure, played by a black fellow, to reveal his true abilities to fight the one person no one can kill. Oh and it uses this cool effect with bullets. SOUND FUCKING FAMILIAR?

how a 'curveball' works
by ArcadianDS
Jun 5th, 2008
12:31:04 PM
a curveball works because its rotation is in a direction COUNTER to its trajectory. Meaning, it spins sideways while moving foreward, and the effect of the stitching hitting the 'wall of air' in front of it, causes it to fall off of its orginal course.

Bullets are symmetrical and uniform. They are designed from the ground up to go straight. They wind through the air like a screw, and this actually makes them go straighter than if they were just shoving foreward.

It would be theoretically possible to 'curve a bullet' if you designed one specifically for this task (putting a bias into its center of gravity), but it would ultimately wind up going end-over-end through the air about as fast as a fat bumble bee. Its target would say, "god DAMN what was that? I think a bee just stung me" as opposed to being, y'know, shot through and through by a bullet.

Oh and cars generally dont use other cars as ramps. Considering that the front end of a corvette is fiberglass and tupperware, the only thing soaring over Jolie's car would be bits and pieces of her front bumper.

Do I need to even add a paragraph about shooting wings off flies, oh and then Morgan Freeman holding a fist full of flies and their dislodged wings? What did he spent 3 hours off-screen with a magnifying glass looking for fly wings?
