I actually think that Burton and Depp are not doing each other any favours with their collaborations. Sure they did well in things like Scissor Hands and some others. However, I do feel they need to step out of their comfort zones and go back to creating more edgey stuff.

but he is hardly one note. Compare the bright folk tale visuals of Big Fish to Sweeny Todd. Or my favorite Burton film, Ed Wood, to the pastels of Edward Scissorhands. The problem with being stylistic, is that people try and pigeonhole the artist. If the artist just had a bland realistic look, that ironically is shared by just about every other director, then that director gets a pass.

politics. Instead of looking at Obama's policies of rolling back taxes on the rich and cutting taxes for the middle and lower taxes, people still peg him as an elitist because one comment.

Meanwhile, even within the realm of personality, Republicans get a free ride. McCain relies largely on his wife's fortune for his career while Obama pretty much lifted himself up by his bootstraps. Yet, this elitist argument never gets pinned on McCain, even though he had a much more privileged upbringing.

Sure he's made some whimsical and funny movies. But the man can bring the darkness when necessary (Sleepy Hollow, and Sweeney Todd- it only feels fun because it is a musical, but it's dark as hell).

DerLang- I couldn't agree more. Those are all movies that range from garbage to masterpieces based solely on who you talk to. And it seems the general audience (not their "fanbase") all say above average, but nothing more. I also saw a comedian not that long ago who went off on a rant about how "Scarface is not a role model! What is wrong with you kids?!" It was at the local Renaissance Festival and while staring down this group of kids, praying he got the message through.

This election has really brought the real America out from the shadows. When a black man runs for president, and you see the reaction of many people (including liberals), you truly see how little progress this country has made, and how much further it needs to go.

And when people call Obama arrogant just because he speaks with confidence and dignity, it reveals someone's mentality. But such comments should be expected from someone who names themself after the blood supposedly coming out of a famous black actor's penis.

I'm suprised it took about 20 years for Burton to get around to directing a vampire project. It would seem like a natural subject given all the dualities involved, sex/death, dead/undead/alive...Lets just hope that Depp doesn't do another British accent variation. One of my top ten from 2007. I also never understood the hate for Burton's Wonka, as it's a much more accurate representation of Dahl's novel. Apes was shit however; a remake that was clearly not needed. I also enjoyed Big Fish quite a bit and Sleepy Hollow is just plain gory fun. It contains a thin plot to be sure but considering the original story is around six pages, what did people expect?

You don't have to be racist to dislike Obama. Many people dislike Obama because he believes you don't have to entangle this country in foreign wars in order to make progress in the middle east. They also dislike him because he will likely hold companies accountable for their actions and enforce environmental laws and eavesdropping laws that have been on hold for the last eight years.

When he attacked Clinton's comments about LBJ and MLK, it wasn't about race as much as a vision of American democracy. Obama believes that democracy works the best when it is informed by populist movements that force politicians to act. He has written about this a long time before Clinton's made her comments. It is a ground up approach to American democracy. LBJ was the best president for race relations since Lincoln (this is often overshadowed by his bumbling in Vietnam). However, without the populist movement headed by the likes of MLK, I doubt any of the civil rights acts would have been passed.

Like I said, you don't have to be racist to dislike Obama, but plenty of people will admit they won't vote for him because of his race. In some states that number is in the double digits. It is a reminder that two-hundred years after slavery we still have a long ways to go.

The reason some people are giving Burton a hard time
by moondoggy2u
Jun 2nd, 2008
11:34:09 AM
Is because anymore, Burton seems to direct by numbers. With very few exceptions, every Burton movie possesses the same whimsical, dark fantasy atmosphere, the same leading man, the same Elfman, or ElfmanESQUE, score (complete with boy's choir), and the same penchant for depicting horrible scenes without the slightest whiff of suspense, and, should the movie be a big-budget affair, the same assenine stunt-casting.

That's right kids, for only 19.95, you, too, can own "Burton Direction By Numbers." Just follow the enclosed easy-to-read checklist and have your very own audience, comprised of angst-ridden faux artists and Gen Xers! Order now because supplies are limited!! LA LA-LA LA LA LA-LA LA!!!!

Standard Operating Procedure. It thought it was an interesting change of pace for Elfman. In fact, if he hadn't shown up on the opening credits I would never have guessed the score was his. He has his crutches but I still dig the hell out of his music. So few composers make scores that have a life of their own apart from the film.

...they support Hillary, but would vote for McCain if Obama wins the Democratic primary is simply saying they would never vote for a black man as far as I'm concerned. Hillary and Obama held very similar stances on many issues, but are worlds apart in terms of McCain's stance. So the people who would give up all their supposed beliefs and stances on the issues and vote for McCain are simply saying they will never vote a black man into the white house, and the issue of race means much more to them than health care, education, environment, economy, the war, and everything else.

It started out as a relatively mundane old black and white soap. There was nothing remotely supernatural happening for the longest time. I'm not even sure when that part kicked in because I quit watching it. When I rejoined the soap Barnabas Collins was there and we had a vampire story.

By the time the show petered out there were werewolves, ghosts, witches, a Frankenstein type dude, disembodied heads, time travel, alternate dimensions etc etc... a few times they'd completely reboot the storylines by just going to the other wing of the mansion where history unfolded differently.

The best part of the show was the goofs. I don't know if it was always live, but there were live elements. My favorite was as the credits scrolled over a shot of some spooky room that the actor playing Barnabas tried to take a shortcut through on the way to his dressing room. He saw the camera, did a big D'OH take, and backed out. It was awesome. There were lots of moments like that. Another moment I enjoyed was watching the giant wire like chin hair on one of the lead women. It was like a toothpick stuck in her jawline. It wasn't there the next day.

I was nay saying Burton for awhile, then he went and totally redeemed himself with Sweeney's Todd. Burton needs to bring back Jeffery Jones for this film, if he can't fit into the customes. As for Elfman, yeah he's branched out and done other things other in Burton, but like Burton they haven't been the same.

For Planet of the Apes did anyone ever watch the DVD extra features? Like the only person who is on them is this boner who taught the actors how to walk like Apes. Like thats his job in life, he was so amazed with what they did in that movie. Its really funny, I kind of felt bad for the guy, because I could tell he took it really serious. I wonder what he does now?

All the charm and magic of the show, for me, had to do with the fact that it was this cheesy, but earnest soap opera for freaks. I don't know why you'd make a Dark Shadows movie and not just make an original vamp flick. Make a Dark Shadows sopa again. Why'd Angel have to die in vain??

Yeah I agree Planets was better then Charlie. Mainly because I could see were the idea of an updated Apes movie would make sense. But I don't know how he convinced anyone that they should redo Wonka. Even though in the end it is a bigger hit then the first one.

about as good an adaptation of the book as Willy Wonka. The addition of the father character was abominible, and I LOVE Christopher Lee. The mishandling of Mike TV and messing up Violet's relationship with her mother. The only major change in Willy Wonka? Swans instead of Squirrels.

I wrote a paper on the book a few years ago. The only thing that Burton does is make Wonka much more a dick like in the book. Go back and read it again. There is no evidence that any of the other kids are as pratty as they are in the films. Wonka is just a complete jerkoff to them. Its awesome.

The man has made three great films and the rest have either been mediocre, close to unwatchable, or seeping with smugness. Beetlejuice, Scissorhands, and Nightmare are true classics. His Batman flicks were eh, alright. Planet of the Apes, Wonka, and Sleepy Hollow were unwatchable. Corpse Bride, Big Fish, and Sweeney Todd (which is ALSO unwatchable) was akin to watching Tim Burton jerk off.

I re-watched the 70s "Willy Wonka" and sorry to say but Burton's "Charlie" is dull and sinister, and is NOT a more accurate representation of Dahl's book. Wonka was conniving and somewhat evil in Burton's adaptation, and the music was shit. Nothing compares to Gene Wilder's version. "Planet of the Apes" was pretty much a hunk of ass as well, with a few interesting parts. On the other hand, "Sleepy Hollow" does remain one of my top 20 favorite visually-spectacular, awesomely shot movies of all time.

Back when he was angry, talented, offbeat, and made better films. I read that he dropped out of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly to make the Pirates sequels and that's when I realized that that guy was gone for good. The Depp of yore would have never made a move like that. Now we get two mediocre sequels (I didn't hate them or anything, just disappointing) the HORRIBLE Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the dour and passionless Sweeney Todd. Finding Neverland was alright but overly saccharine, but I'll give it up to him for the Libertine, which was a bit dull but at least interesting. Why does having kids always ruin great artists?

Sleepy Hollow sucks? Charlie sucks? Sweeney Todd sucks? Ok, Ill give you Apes, thats just plain awful, but the others are brilliant. But I guess if you dont like or have never heard of Hammer Films ever before, you wouldnt like Sleepy Hollow. As forCharlie, I think we can safely recognize the greatness that is Gene Wilder from the orginal adaptation, but both films can co-exist happily in my universe. Wilder's Wonka was an iconic performance to be sure, maybe not the level of McDowell's Alex DeLarge, to grab another litery example out of thin air, but one for the ages. It doesnt mean we shouldnt let other folks take a crack at it. After all, everyone's psyched to see some rapidly decompsing pill popper take a crack at Nicholson's iconic performance as the Joker, and I dont see everyone crying "Woe!" at that. Sweeney Todd was one of the best films of last year. Whats the matter kids, cant handle musicals? Oh, and Beetlejuice doesnt have signature "dark" Tim Burton moments...WTF? Stop huffing the shit under the sink for 5 minutes and get some film perspective. Oh, and lastly, Indy IV is no worse than the other movies, and is quite spectular in many ways, but I guess you guys would prefer to see real gophers giving a Heil Hitler salutation, Marion hitting a russian guy with a frying pan with exaggerated sounds fx, or maybe a Russian peering through through windshield with a shocked expression on his face, a sledgehammer bouncing off a guys head, etc. etc..

Tim Burton is a pretentious prick who makes shitty "art" films that are only meant to please 14-year old fat chicks who listen to My Chemical Romance and bad Nine Inch Nails. Goth was a culture that was ruined by two things: the media surrounding Columbine and Tim Burton. Bauhaus and The Cure used to be fucking awesome but everytime I hear a friggin loser with a Nightmare Before Christmas bag say "Bela Legosi is Dead" i just want to shoot myself. There is nothing wrong with Tarantino and Judd Apatow but Tim Burton ruined cool shit for everyone and that is not cool. PEACE!

Yeah, Alec Newman would've made a great brooding Barnabas Collins. And after all the vampire series of the previous decade from "Forever Knight" to "Buffy" to "Angel" a real opportunity was shamefully missed. I heard the WB pilot wasn't executed very well at all though. I'd have rather seen this as TV series, but hey, they do make TV series out of hit movies sometimes.

Has anybody seen the movie version of the original series,House of Dark Shadows?Barnabas was a total bastard in that one, killing off a good portion of the regular cast.It worked well as a good, gory low budget horror film, but the more serious tone was jarring.I also hope they use composer Robert Colbert's original themes, which were revived in the 90's series to good effect.

was a better adaptation (though it does read that way, I was on my way out the door when I was writing). Mostly that Burton added and changed just as much stuff as the 70's version. And I'm ok with the swan switcheroo because it would have simply been impossible to do convincing squirrels back then.

It just seems that Burton's is praised as being so much more accurate because of the squirrels and keeping the original oompa song lyrics. The addition or "Mr. Wonka" is enough to blast that theory totally the hell out of the water. And I don't absolutely hate it, it's just Burton's second laziest piece of filmmaking right behind Planet of the Apes.

hen he is adapting / remaking other’s ideas and material. Apes, Mars Attacks, Sweeny Todd, Charlie and The Chocolate factory. The only exception in my eyes is Sleepy Hallow. He needs to get back to his kooky own brand of originality and quit mucking around with remakes. I have to admit though the idea of Depp in a new Dark Shadows has my intrigued.

Even as a kid I always assumed all the children died in the original version, but in Burton's there's that unnecessary scene where we see all the kids leave the factory. I'm glad Depp didn't try and channel Wilder, because as good as he is it would have been impossible to go one on one with the champ. Wilder's Wonka had far more depth of emotion, from whimsy to pure anger. He was an incredible character. Supposedly when he did the scene at the end where he yells at Charlie, the director was shocked that he played it so brutally.

Anyway, I don't think Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is bad, but like most remakes it's just unnecessary. We already have a superior version, and I don't think Burton added enough to really justify his version.

Longtime fan of the series. It's interesting to see the first 210 episodes before Barnabas appeared, and how the series morphed into the pop culture juggernaut it eventually became.

It scared the hell outta me as a kid, but now half the fun is looking for the flubs.

My favorite is the one where the bat is about to make an appearance, and just before it happens you can see the shadow of a stagehand holding a fishing pole with a rubber bat dangling. Awesome.

Although without Dan Curtis it's questionable that a film will be much more than just another movie with sharp teeth. What's really a shame is that the 90's revival series was cancelled in a boneheaded decision. Curtis said the studio came back somewhat later saying they made a huge mistake, and that they wanted him to resume. Man, I would've loved to have seen what may have been....oh well.....
