Mcbride was hilarious in the rough cut of Pineapple Express

Which i saw last July....and let me tell you that cut was ROUGH. I remember watching Mcbride, having never heard of him before and thinking, "Where the fuck did they find this guy??" I'm sure some of his scenes in that film will get cut and trimmed big time given that some just aren't necessary to the plot and could drag the pace, but what's left in there will still be great and there'll be a treat on the DVD deleted scenes. There's a line at the end of that, and I'm not sure if it'll make it into the final cut, where Mcbride almost breaks the fourth wall by stating the obvious with ****SPOILER**** "I can't believe I'm still alive, I should have probably bled to death by now." and I just thought it was such a funny and perfect period at the end of that movie. It seemed totally off the cuff, whether it was scripted or not I don't know and don't care, but that's what this guy does so well. That and he was in All the Real Girls, which is an unsung masterpiece. It made me happy to see that he had been cast in Land of the Lost instead of going with the family angle. This guy is def gonna be a presence on the comedy landscape for a while. I gotta see The Foot Fist Way.

... you really do. This is ground zero for McBride, and all good things that happen from here are going to be because of how f'ing amazing he is in this.

to see it. It really sounds hysterical. McBride didn't have enough screen time in Hot Rod, and I can't wait to see him in this, Pineapple Express, and Tropic Thunder. Certainly a big summer for him.

Sigh..."The comedy ENTER THE DRAGON"!!!

Have to disagree with Drew on this (whose likes as reported here I rarely part sides on). "The comedy ENTER THE DRAGON". Just reading that seems funnier than the movie itself. All the film's clips seems boring and predictable in how they play out and nothing strikes me as very amusing. Maybe it is McBride's thick-headed type of character; a leader tied to a rigid ideology who feels that false confidence makes up for lack of insight and much human compassion. Everything I've seen of this movie rubs me the wrong way. The character has no warmth or like-ability to him from what I've seen in the trailers or clips. The story seems framed behind a pompous redneck dolt who runs a martial arts school with elements of THE KARATE KID (which as a source of satire petered out about 15 or 20 years ago). And the movie looks so damn cheap like it was made in a mall dojo after hours (and probably was). I'll take the inspired lunacy of the "A Fistful Of Yen" segment of KENTUCKY FRIED MOVIE or go with Jackie Chan's very human humor from his earlier films. Hmm, time to throw on a DVD of Zatoichi's adventures with the wonderful Shintaro Katsu who never missed a beat in mixing humor with serious action and pathos. Sorry, Drew. I'll pass on this one.

... is everything, especially with character comedy. Clips for this movie don't really do it much justice. It's the overall film, and the way it builds. If you've trusted me in the past, trust me now... THE FOOT FIST WAY is the real deal. And when you see Fred's relationship with his wife, you'll see that "warmth and like-ability" you're looking for.

If you watch the deleted scenes on the ATRG DVD, you can see a couple of hilarious scenes starring McBride that also show off Green's comedy chops.
That 'staying in character' crap will kill this movie...

It worked fort Borat because everyone already knew who Borat was. It worked for Napoleon Dynamite because he was an engaging character even if you didn't know his story. But without the context of the movie, this guy just seems like an unlikable creep. I'm afraid that strategy is really backfiring on them.

I like to root for Hollywood outsiders, and it's impressive that they got this movie made independently in North Carolina with limited resources. There's definitely raw talent on display here... the pilot this creative team went on to do at HBO is well-made and much funnier. Jody Hill will go on to do some good work I'm sure, McBride is already on his way to becoming a comedy star. But Foot Fist Way, on the whole, is very tough to sit through. Really inconsistent and rarely funny.

Yeah, me too. "Hey, look, its like Andy Kaufman! How revolutionary!!" And the startlingly unfunny that came from that bit is why I will never see this movie. Ever.

...they've got a funny kind of screw-up that seriously threw me off for a few minutes. Apparently there's a Danny McBride who wrote the Underworld movies. FFW's Mcbride is credited on imdb as "Danny R. McBride", however, they've got pictures of him on the profile of the other McBride, who is apparently a former stuntman and, of course, writer of the Underworld movies. I was seriously confused for a minute as to why Mori wasn't asking McBride more about his early writing and stunt career until I figured it all out. Yay me!

...were right. I can't believe this has been hyped so much for so long . . and by several comedians I love. Patton Oswalt screened this? Really? And it wasn't ironic so-bad-it's-funny screenings? I don't know, maybe this seemed funnier in a film festival context, third day in, after watching some pretty abysmal movies. I was underwhelmed.
Conflicted...

Just finished writing my review up for our paper. I found myself very conflicted as I was watching it and then writing my review. McBride is talented and he creates a fully-formed character; I'm sure he's going to go on to a great career. And I laughed at the scene where the lady gets clobbered. But the movie itself is just rather unpleasant. There's not a likable character in the bunch and everyone is doing things so despicable that it just made me mentally check out of the flick. Maybe if Simmons had been a jerk around a bunch of really normal people or if all the stuff was happening to him and he displayed an over-the-top calm and zen. But here everyone is so unlikable that I really just wanted it to be over so I could watch a movie about people I enjoy. Maybe it was just an off day for me and maybe I need to see it with friends instead of alone at a press screening, but it just didn't do anything for me except make me very bored.

By which I mean it'll be a lot funnier on DVD than in the theater. It's something that I'll laugh at more when people start quoting it. It's just taht it's so cheap looking that it makes me regret paying more than $10 for it. I officially lost it at "You are making this awkward."
