05:50:22 AM
hmmm.. where have i heard that one..before. oh yeah..bad girls was a long running tv show in the UK. about a group of female prisoners in really tough prison in the UK. In the beginning, it worked well because the governor, a man was duplicitous, murdering snake. and he was having an affair with the female prisoner who ran the jail and put the fear of god into everyone. that gave the show a dramatic tension. It ran out of steam in the end.

No network is picking this show up. I know some of you exploitation lovers on here think that shit as much as you do but the fact is, most people aren't into the exploitation thing. Check the box office gross for Grindhouse. It's funny that someone wrote a pilot like this and maybe kind of amusing that they got a couple of famous names to actually produce the pilot but there's no way in hell this gets picked up. Can everyone please grow up and get the fuck over this exploitation film phase? We get it...the movies are bad. Ha ha.

for the same reason Gridnhouse flopped. General audiences don't get it and what's more, they don't want to get it. The only way a show like this can exist (assuming the tone is the way Harry describes it) is if it's REALLY cheap to produce. But with Rodriguez and McGowen attached, it won't be. Sorry kids. But we've got another season of Grey's on the way. How would that be?

HBO just hired Frank Rich from the NY Times as one of their consultants/execs for HBO TV. They are trying to raise the bar again. In one way that means a return to smart TV, but at the same token I think it puts restrictions on anything "cool". This is too B movie for HBO. Maybe Showtime, although it probably lands on FX or something like that if it's actually picked up past the pilot stage. I agree with the people who think Robert is going down a bad path for the rest of his career. He does not have one classic movie to his credit. One shining example when everything worked. Don't give me Sin City either. While it was interesting and an achievement, it's hardly a great movie. Robert is an outsider and while that is admirable, I also don't think the news that he's attached to anything these days should be too exciting. We've seen enough of his work to know what his limitations are. Quentin blew him off the screen with Death Proof. Grindhouse was such a lopsided pairing and only further illustrated the different between a great director/writer and one who understands technology but not telling compelling stories.

In other news, please, Rodriguez (and Tarantino), PLEASE stop wanking over 70's shit and trying to recapture it. Do something fucking original already, you one trick ponies. We get it - you loved sneaking into shitty explotation movies when you were kids, but why in holy fuck's name do you, talanted directors both, insist on pissing your talent up the wall by making new shitty explotation movies. NEW RULE: Robert Rodriguez is Uwe Boll without the talent.
by Bill Maher
May 27th, 2008
06:10:27 PM
John McNaughton already did this 15 years ago for Showtime when he made "Girls In Prison". Of course there are differences:(1) Ione Skye and Anne Heche were still young and still had perky breasts when they made "Girls In Prison" (2) Skye and Heche were willing to show their perfect tits while Rodriguez's aging little homewrecker has been shy about whipping 'em out -which is funny since she was only noticed for being naked in "Doom Generation" and "Going All The Way"; and (3) John McNaughton has a flair for campy, B-movie badness and sexy trash such as "Girls In Prison" and "Wild Things", while Rodriguez fucked up Salma Hayek's nude scene in "Desperado". How bad do you have to suck to ruin a scene with a naked Salma Hayek? Robert Rodriguez bad, that's how. I doubt Uwe Boll could have fucked that one up if he tried.

by ZeroCorpse
May 27th, 2008
06:47:20 PM
Now she's merely hot. I wish she hadn't lost all that weight and become a typical Hollywood stick figure. WHAT IS IT about Hollywood that makes women give up having curves? Is it that they're surrounded by catty gay costume designers that want them to look more like teenaged boys? Is it that old producers like their women to look unhealthy? WHAT makes women in Hollywood with awesome curvy bodies give them up in exchange for a blah, bland, everybody-has-it, needs-a-sammich non-figure?

Rose, I'm begging you! Go back to being curvy and healthy! You were so much sexier when you were curvy!

This message goes out to ALL Hollowwood starlets who started out with curvy bodies! WE LIKED YOU THAT WAY! The only ones who want you to look like a bag of bones are the ones who don't like women, anyway!

I don't agree with the GRINDHOUSE analogies...
by Big Dumb Ape
May 27th, 2008
08:51:07 PM
I've seen several people state that this would obviously fail because of the poor box office returns on GRINDHOUSE, but I have to say I don't agree with that at all -- and let the record show that I was one of the biggest detractors of GRINDHOUSE in the Talkbacks when it first came out.

To be honest, I think two things basically killed GRINDHOUSE. (1) The marketing, which really never managed to explain to the average moviegoer "what" it was about or even "what" it would be like as a film experience. I mean, if you were a film buff and you knew what Grindhouse exploitation films were, you were good to go. But the average person never really "got it." But the MAIN reason that I think GRINDHOUSE failed -- and this is where a flame war might begin -- is because (2) the first half was pretty fun (Rodriguez' PLANET portion)...the mock trailers in the middle were fun as well, in fact in some cases they were laugh out loud funny...but then the other half of the film, Tarantino's DEATH PROOF, was just flat-out terminally boring, self-indulgent bullshit.

Seriously, let the record show that I basically like Tarantino, but let's be honest: DEATH PROOF was actually painful to sit through. How you make a BORING exploitation film about 3 women looking to settle a score with Kurt Russell in a muscle car is beyond me. Talk about a letdown. By the time the lights came up, everyone I knew who had seen the movie simply felt an emotional crash -- that is, whatever sense of fun they had been feeling from the first half was now completely dissipated. And let's recall history correctly, shall we? When GRINDHOUSE debuted even the critics were pointing that out. Not to mention the Talkbacks were likewise filled with debates about how badly Tarantino had dropped the ball. For crying out loud, to this day I still want him to give me back the time I lost off my life having to sit through such groan-inducing, self-indulgent crap like that restaurant scene where the girls were talking about absolutely NOTHING and the scene just went on...and on...and on...and on...and then you looked at your watch and it STILL went on...and on...and on. And you just knew that while he was shooting it, Tarantino must've been delusionally sitting in the Director's chair thinking to himself, "My God, I write SUCH brilliant dialogue!" when someone should have had the balls to go up to him in the editing room and say "For crying out loud, man, this film is fucking DRAGGING. And I mean BADLY."

So as for this PRISON project, my reaction is the same for most things: the concept sounds fun on a basic level, but it really depends on the final execution and WHERE this goes since it COULD become a one-note joke that gets tired awfully fast. But all in all, if the pilot was good...if Rodriquez REALLY has a sense of direction for it...if there really IS a plot that actually goes somewhere (for example, Rose breaks out of jail and while she's on the run they do take-offs on OTHER types of exploitation films or something doofy like that)...then sure, if I was a channel like Cinemax I would greenlight it for a sample 6 episode run, and then I'd show it on Friday nights wedged in amongst some other exploitation flicks to make a late night programming event around it.

This is exactly the sort of project that would get me to fork over the extra $$$ to get HBO (or Showtime or Black Starz or whatever pay channel it happened to be on). McGowan? Rodriguez? Women? Chains? Count me IN.

I don't know if this is a good place for this comment but why does this site (to the best of my knowledge) continue to overlook one of the most entertaining shows on TV, BBC America's "Robin Hood"? It's now in its second season on this side of the pond but the buzz here remains low. Comments anyone?

I agree with almost everything you said, but the marketing of the movie was the ultimately the downfall. Nobody knew what the hell the movie was and it was a movie that would have done better opening near the beginning of summer, not Easter f'ing weekend.

Why are we fascinated by seeing bitches yell and scream at each other? OK, yeah there's the whole kiss factor but shit, that'll never happen. Only reason I'd even tune in is to see some bitch tear off some other bitch's clothing and we get tit and ass shots. But hell, that's what we have porn for right? Fuck this, I'm gonna go watch Brianna Love get fucked now. One of the BEST asses in porn ever. Excuse me....

If it's not all going to his estranged or ex-wife, that is. Seriously, when are you going to get off his dick and let Rose have her turn? You talk about him like he's friggin' Hitchcock or Fellini or someone of actual directorial merit instead of the conceptual hack he's almost completely become. What has he contributed to film, really? The Mariachi trilogy is fine, but there's nothing particularly noteworthy about them as movies. Sin City, as much as I enjoy it, is still a huge case of style over substance. The Spy Kids movies are jokes, so are From Dusk Till Dawn, The Faculty and Planet Terror/Grindhouse, however you want to regard that cooked-up indulgence-fest. You would think he'd have learned from the director/actress combos previously mentioned where they were banging each other and turned out questionable results at the same time. I mean, I just can't wait for that Barbarella remake. Oh, wait, that's right, I can! That's simply because Barbarella, like all movies, has no need to be remade! But, seriously, Harry, why is this the "coolest fricking TV show ever?" Because you say so or because your friend might be involved in its making? Gee, I guess it must be nice if you're making movies and you've got a friend who's got a huge website to tell a bunch of people how great you are. If this TV show gets picked up, it would just be another sub-genre piece of garbage. That's right, sub-genre. Women in Prison is not an acceptable film genre by itself, nor is it particularly captivating or watchable. Exploitation is what it is for those same reasons. Some people, like you evidently, go for it in droves, while the rest of us gladly look away and laugh at you for enjoying it. Do us a favor, Harry, next time you get "inside information" about some project and it's not belonging to the section of the site where you normally post, not that you do a great deal of that anymore anyway, let someone else break us this precious news. Then again, if you don't really care about being objective in any way, and just want to continue prostituting yourself, which appears highly true, please keep us informed of the next time Rodriguez has a bowel movement. I'm sure it's his next project anyway.
It's 2008.

Good episode. LOTS of changes... I won't spoil it, but I will say we don't see Roslyn for the entire episode, and that Saul has a LOT on his plate by the end of this episode.

Oh, and Adama will have to repair his model ship AGAIN.

Funny story about memorable "exploitation" movies...
by Gozu

They were actually pretty decent films and the proving ground for writers and directors like John Sayles, Jonathan Demme, Joe Dante, David Cronnenberg, Martin Scorcesse, Frances Ford Coppola, and the rest of the Corman gang. The thing is, the ones that stuck around actually displayed some promise or were just entertaining films in themselves. The exploitation genre in itself has no inherent value, like horror or sci-fi. It's the actual content that matters.

by Big Dumb Ape

Seriously, man, THAT'S the best defense you could come up with for Rodriquez leaving his wife and kids behind? "His wife was like 10-15 years older than him. Cool, when you're 20 and she's a hot 33 of something. Less cool when you're still a goodlooking guy at 33 and she's now 46 and past her prime."

Speaking as someone who is in his mid-forties and who is in shape, no gray hairs, smiles and stays upbeat, and who looks pretty damn good for my age (most people who meet me actually think I'm 32 or so), I just want to say that being in your mid-forties is HARDLY when you are "past your prime." Hell, if you stay upbeat and full of life, I'd argue this is when you're actually just hitting your stride!

As for his wife, I haven't seen any pictures of her, but I can assure you there are plenty of HOT looking forty year old women that could EASILY give Rose McGowan a run for her money. Or did you just happen to miss out on that whole MILF porn thing the last decade or so?
