Watchmen is basically the only graphic novel I've ever read, but I loved it to pieces. That said, I thought it would be impossible to make it into a successful movie, and this picture demonstrates why: It's a very serious story that no member of the general public unfamiliar with the source material is going to take seriously...not with those costumes. It may be a good, faithful adaptation, but I can't see how this won't bomb.

does not inspire me with much hope. Slavish devotion to the look of the source material may drive the movie right on down the soulless pasticcio road.

At the same time, change one little thing and the hardcores will bitch. Probably better off never releasing it. Shelve this abomination (wrong company, you say?), Snyder! Cut your losses! We've seen your kind of wild-eyed, clueless, rambling enthusiasm before! We've seen it, and we've dubbed it Ratner!

This is so cool I have used it as my background pic. And the earlier post is correct firefox shows the picture, IE does not. Its good they look silly, because although it is not meant to be a comedy, Moore's book does imply the sheer silliness of the whole idea of grown men and women dressed up in costume to fight crime.

it looks silly or stupid. That's the point. These are costumes some guys in teh 1940s made from whatever material they could get there hands on. They look really goofy, which is fine by me. You're meant to get the feeling that the Minutemen were mostly just chancers who dressed up stupidly and got famous, rather than serious crime-fighters. Hooded Justice should be massive though... maybe they're going to leave his story out, so it's not important for him to be huge any more?

AllSeeingEye is right. IE just doesn't like the pic.

That picture looks perfect in context of the story. I have faith that Snyder will make the adaptation faithful to the book. But I just don't know if he can handle simple subtle symbolism. That's what this film needs. He hasn't made a film yet that requires that kind of artistic expression, so hopefully, he's been saving up.

Good, very good in fact. However...

I still maintain that Watchmen is unfilmable. Unless its a hardcore 18 certificate, bone crunching, blood letting, sex scenes not cut out, minimum of 2 1/2 hours orgy of violence with the ending exactly like the book, then its not going to be very good. I love this picture, I love the set design and the costumes for the modern hero's but all the obvious love for material been lavished on the film by the cast and crew is going to mean fuck all if the script and story isn't done with laser like accuracy. I liked 300 a lot. Snyder did a great job with that but the original story was featherlight and thin compared to Watchmen. I just dont think he's up to it terms of telling the story. I really hope I'm wrong but I I'm more nervous about this film sucking than I've ever been about any other film.

I wish they'd been this "authentic" when it came to the modern Nite Owl and Ozy costumes. I'm sick to death of "body armor" and sculpted muscles. And, frankly, how are we going to get the beer gut Dan Dreiberg sports when it's encased in body armor?\n What's so great about this shot is just how lame they all look. These were regular people, fighting crime in homemade costumes. They were goofy and silly, but sincere. It makes the appearance of an atomic god like Dr. Manhattan all that much more dramatic.

some people think the graphic novel is a masterpiece, man it wont be pretty to see what the disappointed people have to say when they finally see this. it'll probably make the Indy talkback seem short and very friendly. because when you hold a property in such high esteem, there's no way any movie adaption will live up to anything you hope/imagine. these are the times i'm glad i'm not a comic book geek, i have no connection to the source so i can enjoy or not enjoy the movies based on their own merit. plus if they suck, i dont freak out and take it personally. lol

we're not all raving fanboys who are impossible to please. I'm cautiously optimistic, but if the film doesn't live up to the book or is changed so much that it jars for me, then I won't cry over it, the book's still there. By all means you should enjoy the movie (or not) on its own merits, but I still can't recommend highly enough that you find a way to read the original, even if you're not a comic reader otherwise (hell, I wasn't a comic reader until a couple of years ago). It's not the alpha and the omega as some tout it to be, you're correct that that kind of worship and putting it on a pedestal just leads to disappointment, but it *is*breathtakingly good.

I've an array of vintage photos from my grandfather's era and the "authentic" appearance of this photo is too "digital" to buy outright. Actually, the photo popped up twice during the story, both times with Sally. The first was early on (second issue?) the second was near the very end with Sally at home after the "quick visit." (I'm being vague for the uninitiated.) So there is a reason for the photo to exist, and yes, it does have to do with what happens after the photo was taken. In other news, expect this to own, bitchez!!! :D

If everyone's paying closer attention, HJ is not some shrimp. He's a head taller than everyone else in the pic except Dollar Bill...and since DB is a throwaway character, it makes sense that they'd just throw in whoever answered the casting call that read "6'5'' Super-Hero type needed for upcoming film. Small role but high visibility." Hooded Justice is at least that tall, especially considering Sally Jupiter's probably at least 5'10'' in those heels.

Jesus-I dont know what the hells wrong with some people. there is seriously just NO pleasing some of you. Had they gone down a different route the shit storm it would have brewed would have been overpowering....I personally love the pic. when you see the Minutemen in the comic, they all kinda look "gay" and stupid, and thats whats acheieved here-they're supposed to kind of look old and silly. The only minor problem is that Hooded Justice should look a little more built and badass, but its no biggy. I have high hopes myself, due to Synders faithfulness-Watchmen has a fixed storyline, the narrative of the comic is its most important aspect, unlike, say Batman where you can do whatever you want and create new origins and new designs every few years, and its good that Snyder is sticking to the established material so much.Otherwise something will most likely get lost in the translation- There are panels in Watchmen that are so perfect and filled with subtext and meaning that to translate it anyother way for THIS PARTICULAR book, a lot would get lost me thinks.

My only beef is that the quality of the image does not look vintage. I hate it in movies and tv shows where they show a photograph that is supposed to be a candid photo taken by a regular camera and the photo clearly looks art directed (or like a professionally shot 8 X 10 portrait), or when, as in this case, the image is supposed be from an earlier era, but aside from the b&w/sepia tones, it looks like it was taken with a digital camera. When the photos aren't convincing, it's like bad CGI, and it takes me out of the movie. It's disappointing that Synder didn't distress the image to make it look old, or better yet, use a vintage camera to take the photo.

My standards are high for this -- I liked the comic very much.

If there were actual superheroes in costumes like this, this is EXACTLY how it would look. Do you think if Superman was walking down some street, and some dude had no idea who he was, he wouldn't be calling him an idiot based on how he was dressed? Snyder hasn't proved on past work that he can handle this text, but what I've see so far looks good. I don't know if anyone would be able to adequately tell this story in 2 hours and change though.

If you're talking about the actual photo in the book, it's B&W but it's also OLD. The comic art gets that across. The flashback scenes are in colour, so if this was a scene, it shouldn't be sepia/B&W. It does bother me a little, keeping the full magic away.

Still, I'm nitpicking. But I understand what the others have said about distressed and aged print. It's very good, but I agree with brunomac that they weren't all goofy - they could fight crime. "Except who knew what the fuck was up with Mothman" - priceless!

Let's please stop bitching about the lack of graininess or distortion to the picture. Frankly, the resolution is too high for the photo to have been taken on a period-appropriate camera. It seems to me that Zack Snyder and/or his minions wanted to give us a taste of the period costumes of the Minutemen, and they chose to do this by revealing them through a faux-authentically antique photo. Take it for what is is and not what it's not. The cry may have gone out, if they had chosen to make it appropriately unfocused and aged, that Snyder wasn't showing us enough detail in the design of the heroes. Personally, I'm intrigued with what I see and am anxiously awaiting the first trailer that will give our first real indication of the visual aesthetic and rendering of the graphic novel.

Easy, now...I know it ain't a beret and i think it's a great pic and I bet you a hundred bucks it's aged/disteressed in the movie if it is B&W. Relax, dude.

I can't say I remember much of the comic so I'll have to read it again. Another website is reporting that the pirate story is going to be released on dvd five days after the movie is going to be released. So snyder is looking at three dvds, one with just the pirate story with Gerard Butler providing a voice, another of just the film that was released and another, I'm guessing late 2009, with the pirate story, the film (unedited) and the backstory as presented in the comic with those text stories at the end of each issue.

Indiana Jones v.s Star Wars
by HugePrawn
May 27th, 2008
05:04:37 PM
I've heard rumors that there are people on this Earth that believe the original Indiana Jones trilogy is better then the original Star Wars trilogy. I know, I know its hard to believe, but this rumor came from a reputable source. So in the interest of all that is right in the world, I've come up with 3 reasons Star Wars is better Indiana Jones:

1. This first and probably easiest case to make is - that the three Star Wars movies are just plain better movies. You have the 1977 episode that changed cinema forever. You have 1980's Empire Strikes Back that on its own, is one of the best movies ever made in the 80's. Then in 1983 Jedi came out and cleaned things up nicely. On the opposite end, 1981's Raiders is one of the best movies made in the 80's as well. I give it up to Raiders, it is a classic. But then in 1984 Temple of Doom came out. ugh, what happened? Horrible leading Lady. Annoying Side-Kick. A bad Indy. No Nazis. The only redeeming value is "Ohhh...Snake Surprise." 5 years later (kinda long for a trilogy to get finished if you ask me) Last Crusade came out. And while it did have Nazi's, it played like an T.V episode - stale, safe, by the numbers, nothing new.

2. Star Wars has more cultural significance then Indiana Jones. From "May the Force be with you", to Darth Vader, these movies have become folklore. We reference Star Wars in our everyday lives. How many times to we say "Snakes. I hate Snakes"?

3. The Star Wars movies pushed the envelope in special effects. It paved the way for better and more realistic effects. It allowed storytellers to not be limited anymore in what they could show on screen. Now, thanks to Star Wars, anything you can think of can be rendered on film and look cool.

Case closed.

That will be printed and framed and show up on a wall in one shot. You can't make too much of how the costumes will look 'in action' because there will be very little of these costumes 'in action' in the finished film. Let's be honest, the Minutemen flashbacks in the GN will be the first thing cut from the film.

They are goin for the detailed universe in a big way but the chances are this was done as the flashback was shot. And as has been said the Comedian flashback is pretty essential even if it is done on mere seconds.

Moore simply thinks Movies are not Comics and he persuaded Terry Gillam NOT to do Watchmen years ago by telling Gilliam there are things in Comics that Movies simply CAN'T do that's all.

Doesn't mean there can't be a great Movie from a Comic source but it won't be the Comic. Simple as that. Moore has decided to keep his expertise to the Medium for which he is justly respected and leave Movies to Moviemakers.

I stand on the fact that these guys look like cheesy bullshit, but even in the comic, when they look back at it it's kind of with that same 'Man, why did we ever do that?' attitude. Fuck, Snyder loves him some comic books. First he brings 300 to the screen and while thin on plot, visually WAS the comic to a T...and now this.

I'm on this like Harry on a treadmill, guys. (Way to go Harry, BTW, keep it up!) Rorschach looks fricking amazing, and that's all that matters. And yeah, it's goofy, but if I think of this being in that jittery silent newsreel footage, it will be truly badass and faithful to the comics. Good work, but damn, the Hooded Justice guy looks like he's got a bag on his head.

Snyder did all right by Dawn of the Dead...Running zombies might not be your thing, but after seeing the opening scene in Night of the Living Dead where Barbara's brother is chasing her car with a drunken staggering gait, I can see why Snyder thought 'shit yeah, freshies can RUN.' And that is terrifying. The two things we got on the Zs is SPEED and BRAINS..Now we just got BRAINS.

the happier you will be. Just do it now. You will not see Watchmen as Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons created them. You will see something similiar that may not completely betray the source material and may be an interesting companion piece to the graphic novel. But the definitive version has been done. There is no way to improve upon perfection. Keep repeating this until this film unspools before your eyes and you'll be much, much happier. Really.

Ign has a great story. They plan on releasinig an animated version of Tales of the Black Freighter, four days after the Watchmen theatrical release. Also, there's going to be an attached documentary called Under the Hood. Which as any of you who read the comic knows that it based on the autobiography that the original Nite Owl, Hollis Mason, wrote. That's just cool. The movie wouldn't work with all this stuff crammed into it but it's fantastic to know that all this content will be in our hands in less that a year. I hope Snyder pulls this one out, it's going to be tough.

i love this picture, but Nite Owl looks wrong. look at the comic and he's actually a handsome rugged guy. this Nite Owl looks like a dork. I know, I know, they're all supposed to look like dorks, but the guy doesn't even look like Stephen McHattie, the older Hollis Mason, and Stephen McHattie is perfect for the role. Also, someone earlier said the Minuteman photo was only used once or twice in the book. I haven't read the book in ten years and I can remember that photo being used everywhere in the book. Rorshach rifling through Blake's closet, there's the photo. Hollis Mason's house, there's the photo. Sally Jupiter's place, there's the photo. When Hollis Mason (SPOILER) gets beaten up by the knottops, there it is again. Also, someone said Mothman's wings should have been bigger because he flew. In the book, someone says that it was rumored that Mothman could fly, but he mostly ran around shooting crooks with a gun. Oh, yeah, and Hooded Justice, yeah, I would have preferred a massive bodybuilder type like the comic, but if you look at circus strongmen of the day, they all had pretty fat guts like this Hooded Justice. and he does come off creepy, like a retarded rapist kind of way, so it could work that way. still, all and all, this picture looks fucking great and I can't wait for this movie!

oh, yeah, another thing about Nite Owl's costume that's kind of off, the horns, or I guess owl ears, on his cowl. I guess that's supposed to show movie audiences why he calls himself Nite Owl, but then you lose the nod to the 1940s Blue Beetle look of the original comic design. If Dan Dreiberg is Ted Kord as the sixties Blue Beetle, then Hollis Mason is the Dan Garrett Blue Beetle of the forties. Oh, well. can't wait to see these characters in color.

The layman will boo the hell out of this when the trailer shows, and it'll be lucky to pull in 10 million on opening weekend. The use of authentic costume was a mistake, and there's a reason they are rarely used or changed in some way. Spider-man can pull it off because they found the right fabric and look. This is just plain corny and in a bad way.

I am a HUGE Watchmen fan, and I will run to see whatever Snyder ends up with. I might love it, I might not, but I have ZERO expectation of seeing the entire novel on the screen. Hollywood decided...by trial and error...that 2 hours is about the max time to put someone's butt in a theatre seat. Oh, people have tried to film an entire novel and in fact succeeded, only to have studio execs balk and cut and cajole until it was around...2 hours. Case in point...Erich Von Stroheim. He started out working with D.W. Griffith on "Intolerance" and went on to film "Greed", based on the book "McTeague" by Frank Norris. The result was a NINE HOUR MOVIE. Yes, he got the whole book on film, but no one would show it, even with multiple intermissions. It was repeatedly cut, and eventually got close to 2 hours and was shown, but by then, it's creator had disowned it and moved on to making "conventional" films. The 6-7 hours of footage that was cut was destroyed by the studio and is lost forever. Reportedly, it was actually pretty damn good at 9-plus hours, but no one alive now ever saw that version. The LOTR films were, for me at least, pretty good ADAPTATIONS of the original material, but even at almost 11 hours for the Extended version trilogy, it's nowhere close to "the entire book(s) to screen". I think the approach of releasing "Tales Of The Black Freighter" and "Under The Hood" as separate pieces may work. We'll see. Oh, as for the picture...absolutely works for me!

you may be right. I seem to remember Mothman being described as a non-powered gun-toting crimefighter in one of the Hollis Mason 'Under the Hood' excerpts but now that i think of it, i may have actually read it in one of Alan Moore's backstory notes in the Graffiti special edition Watchmen book (now the Absolute edition) or the backgrounds and timelines in the Moore approved Mayfair Games role playing supplements. I have the Graffiti edition handy but the Mayfair supplements are buried in boxes somewhere in a closet. I'll check on it later.

LOOK at the earliest Golden Era Comics, go on. See the costumes ? The naive looking portrayal of villains and heroes ? THAT is what Moore and now Snyder are getting at.

Moore has obsessively studied and then written in the style of ALL the comic book eras in a great many of his comics. Portraying them with wit and humour but also a great deal of affection.

They are not MEANT to look like slick 2008 Superheroes. Understand ?

It just seems that anyone who has read it and understood what it was about would get why these costumes are great the way they are.

Whether or not the general public, whose first exposure to Watchmen will be the trailer, will go see the film will rely heavily on the trailer's ability to express what the movie is all about. The picture above, out of context, looks ridiculous. Hopefully the studio doesn't simply hand the film over to the marketing department to cut a trailer. If they market this as a straight-up superhero movie the trailer will be laughed off the screen. Seeing that people will expect to hear "from the makers of Epic Movie and Meet the Spartans".

The example I cited..."Greed", quite literally had EVERY line of dialogue and EVERY scene from the source material book, "McTeague". That's an extreme that no one else has attempted, to be sure. I think there's little chance of that happening with "Watchmen" or any modern film, because of the "2 hour rule" that Hollywood insists on. More than one critic/pundit decried the first LOTR film for being over 3 hours long. I think there's just too much going on in Watchmen to get the whole thing translated to film. OTOH, if the reports of the animated "Tales Of The Black Freighter" and another release with "Under The Hood", a lot of the novel will done...but in 3 separate pieces. I don't have an issue with that. If the movie doesn't blow chunks, I absolutely want to see the DVD and hope it has "more stuff". Regardless, I'm looking forward to whatever Snyder comes up with. Hopefully, the DVD will have the "unrated" or even an NC-17 version of the movie. Given some of the book's scenes, it'd almost demand a super hard "R" rating for release, with the MPAA cuts absent from the DVD.

I'm nervous about this, I have to say. While I think that the above image (and indeed all the material I have seen pertaining to the Watchmen film thus far) looks great, I still think that Watchmen is unfilmable without ripping the guts out of the story. The book itself is an incredible mosaic where every panel is a vital componant of the story. It was a story specifically desgined for the medium of comics and when you take that story to another medium, you lose what makes it so special. I appreciate that I sound like one of those fanboys who has a lot of incomprehensible and petty prejudices about the way his beloved comics are portrayed on screen. I do actually in fact believe that a great deal of comic book translations to the screen have been very competantly done (Batman, Spider man, Supes...even Wonder Woman at a stretch). Alan moore's work is a very different kettle of fish. I would also make the same argument for the novel-- the recent adaptation of Phillip Pullman's The Northern Lights was a failiure because it shied away from or could not imitate the heart and structure of the book. I think Watchmen will be, at best, an elegant if watered down version of the tale like V for Vendetta. At worst it might be bloated and incoherrant like Dune or Southland Tales.

If Zack Snyder does this movie right, it will not do big box office at all. It will turn a lot of people off.
