Seemed like his star was on the rise when he was in a lot of solid supporting roles for a while there, then suddenly he vanished. Not sure being in this would be any help to him though, kinda feels right up there with that Dragonball Z movie to me. Also, nice to see Jake in an adventure movie. He's been in far too many pretentious dramas in my opinion. Now watch this be another somber socio-political statement that takes itself too seriously.

Without Depp POTC would be mediocre...
by RandySavage
May 20th, 2008
07:42:57 PM
Disney wants this to be their next live action franchise. I hope they understand that it was Depp's genius (with some help from the writers and Verbinski) which created an iconic character and hit film. Gyllenhaal is the Orlando Bloom for this film and that is okay only IF Disney/Bruckheimer can "capture lightning in a bottle" (phrase of the week) in some way with another Depp/Jack Sparrow-level creation. That will be difficult and highly unlikely, so PoP will likely end up as mediocre as the Narnia, Harry Potter or Mummy series.

not an original idea in sight. Go now to the AICN frontpage. Nearly everything is sequels, remakes, adaptations and "re-imagined" TV shows. I appreciate that most of these are carried off well, and I absolutely love the new Battlestar and Iron Man, but is it too much to ask for an original idea? Seriously. The only story I noticed about something even slightly original was a film about WACO. Fuck me, I've seen more stuff about that than I ever want to see in my life. I certainly don't want to see some fucking Hollywood re-telling of a story that had more media coverage than almost any event in history!!! Sory for the incoherent rant, but a film based on a fairly shitty computer game (oh, and give me ONE example of a good computer game adap) has pushed me over the edge.

Robert Downey Jr. is playing a WHITE australian actor who tries to play a black character. its not like they cast downey as a black guy. His role is just the opposite, totally making fun of an actor trying to play another race.

Wow! What an utterly SHITTY casting decision! This actually makes me laugh AND cry.

In terms of being front and center in a big budget movie, Gyllenhaal was acceptable in THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW, but that's only because the role required him to be a bland wimp-ass that the girl didn't even want to be with -- which suited his bland wimp-ass persona just fine. For crying out loud, Gyllenhaal has only ONE acting emotion -- it's that vacant, doe-eyed effeminate look which says "I have NO testosterone in my body. None at all." Someone above called it right. The reason PIRATES worked so well with Depp is because he actually IS a great actor who could bring an entire persona to the part, one that was so strong that it literally leapt off the screen.

So I laugh because sleepy-eyed Gyllenhaal is the LAST person I'd consider to be the lead in an ACTION franchise like PoP -- that is if it's even going to TRY and be like the games.

And this makes me cry because I love the PoP games, and sleepy-eyed Gyllenhaal is the LAST person I'd consider to be the lead in an ACTION franchise like PoP -- that is if it's even going to TRY and be like the games. Which now I know it's NOT!

I went to IMDB to check out something about Gyllenhaal and discovered that his OTHER picture in development is UNTITLED MOON PROJECT. The description for it says...

"An action film centered around one crew's expedition to the moon during a time of frenzied interest in lunar colonization."

I then noticed that DOUG LIMAN is listed as the Director, and I thought to myself "Ah, so I can count on this being his follow-up to that stellar Hayden Christensen film JUMPER." At which point I clicked on the link for Doug Liman to see what else he might be up to...

...Only to discover he's ALSO listed as helming -- wait for it -- JUMPER 2 for release in 2011.

What the fuck??? Is there actually some sort of demand for JUMPER 2?!? Hollywood, do us all a favor: just shoot yourself now and be done with it! Obviously you have NO idea what movies to make anymore!!!!

Persians came from the Steppes of Russia and were primarily caucasian. Many still are. The darker features come from the Arabs conquering Persia and mixing in. Iran means "Arian". If anything, Mr. Gyllenhaal may be too fair to play an ancient Persian.

It's why the first Jet Li / Jackie Chan collaboration is about a WHITE KID. I hate it, but it's a fact that shouldn't shock you every time it happens.

However, this is why Iron Man rocks. Because Terrance Howard was not stunt casting, he was true to the character but also a strong acting choice. And he hopefully will play a complex villain in the next one.

So hopefully it's changing little by little.

But count the non-white people in all of 2008's blockbusters. And you get Terrance, Will Smith, and Jet Li in the Mummy.

Stupid casting. Why? - Persian argument aside: Jake is too much of wimp too play such an iconic character. - Jake is not a physical actor. He doesn't really have that manly presence required for such a role. - Jake as the Prince? Really? This is a joke, isn't it? Only one actor could have played that role and that was John Abraham (Water). The dude was made to play that character - he looks Persian (Indian origin but has persian connections), is built like a tough guy and is an action actor (okay, so in India but that's not a bad thing). But the casting idiots have done it again - 'shall we cast an actor cos he is right for the role?' or because the producers are only interested in money, not entertainment, and thus go for a NAME?' We know the answer to that one folks.

I don't think it's so much that an actor should or shouldn't play outside of their race - it's that with the scales so heavily tipped in favor of white actors - it leaves no room for actors of other ethnicities to get any real work. It's especially unnerving when the role is clearly for a Persian and there are capable Persian actors out there who will probably never see a role offered them that isn't the villain or other stereotype. Yes, casting Jake is a box office consideration and until some producer is willing to put his neck on the line - we will continue to have movies cast like, 'The House Of The Spirits' or 'Evita'.

(1) More than geeks watch Bruckheimer. In fact, I would say geeks are a SMALL proportion of Bruckheimer's wide appeal audience.

(2) The first "Pirates" was pretty great.

(3) "National Treasure" was terrible, yet it was WAY better than "The Da Vinci Code," which NT was ripping off. Do you blame Bruckheimer for aiming low and succeeding... or Ron Howard for not even making a good film?

(4) I would say geeks are the ones who gave "Kung Fu Hustle" and "Oldboy" and "The Host" an audience. Geeks worship "Lost" and "Heroes" which are filled with ethnic roles.

(5) Lay off the geeks. We take risks in what we see. The point is Hollywood is not taking risks in what they THINK an audience wants to see. Even if that means trusting that an audience don't mind ethnic actors as leads, especially if the parts are ethnic.

(6) And I think the other problem is that white or not, Jake doesn't really seem like he could kick anyone's ass, let alone be an acrobat and jump off walls before beheading someone.

Like the first Pirates. Straightforward adventure movie about a young prince, the daughter of the maharajah, a magical dagger and an evil Vizier. Sands of Time had surprisingly good narrative for a video game. Everything fell into place. Would make a good, solid movie.

Persian heritage isn't "traced back"

to Indo-Europeans.

Persians ARE the original Indo-Europeans. Iran literally means "Aryan". the Indo-Iranian branch of Indo-Europeans is the oldest and most distinguished one.

they were basically the first Indo-Europeans to become civilized (not counting the ones who invaded India because they were absorbed into preexisting civilization). whereas modern day Europeans are some of the latest in human history.

the nordic/germanic tribes left asia to take over uninhabited europe very recently in history, and even more recently destroyed the Roman empire (and all their Greek idealogical heritage). ironic how white people in europe (outside of greece) and north america are closer to the Persians in 300 than the Greeks both in terms of ethnicity and idealogies.

in recent times Iranians mixed with other people from the middle east.

the only modern European ethnicity that came out of the caucasus anywhere near as early as the Iranians (who went south) were the Slavic tribes that are in Russia/Ukraine today (they went north)... technically not Europeans.

gyllenhaal with some makeup and costume would look like a completely normal Persian of the time. but since we know who he is it might be a bit jarring. it would've been better to cast an unknown.

Were utter dog shit. The first one was entertaining mainly due to Depp, who became tiresome in the sequels. Knightley and Bloom barely registered, Nighy, Fat own the screen in other films but were wasted so I will give this a miss...Also they should really cast someone at least ethnic looking, so agree with Naveen Andrews who plays Sayid on Lost or the chap who plays Dr Suresh on Heroes. Gyllenhall has the screen presence of gangrine foot.

Re-read the PERSIA bit. PERSIA. Do you see it? PERSIA. Now look at this job title DOCTOR. Do you see it? DOCTOR. Not US Doctor. Or British Doctor. Or Persian Doctor. Just DOCTOR. Do you see where I am going with this? Do you? Hmm? PERSIA. Prince of PERSIA. Not AMERICA. But PERSIA. Not China but PERSIA. Can you see it now? If you can't, then you'll probably accept Denzel Washington playing the role of George Washington cos hehehe he's the best man for the job. Or I know, why not get Sylvester Stallone to play Lara Croft - cos it would be political correctness gone mad to hire a woman for that job - especially since Stallone would be the most qualified person. Right? Sigh...PERSIA. PERSIA. I know, lets hire a British cockney bloke from London to play Nintendos Italian Mario in a movie and - oh, hold on...

As far as ethnic casting, yes, this is Hollywood, and Schlomo Jomo is not going to be the lead in an expensive possible tentpole for any studio. As far as Gyllenhal, he can be physically imposing when needed although that isn't a factor for this role. Question is, will anyone care when this comes out? A loved but not widely known video game title?

by JTStyler

That phrase does not mean anything. Ethnicity refers to a person's origin and can refer to caucasian, afro-carribean etc and theirs subgroups. Ethnic-looking is a borderline offensive phrase - it paints people not of a familiar colour as being 'foreign' or 'other'i.e not one of us. Makes me uneasy.

I love how giant Hollywood movies can just pick anyone to be any race/ethnic character (Daniel Craig and the entire cast of Munich), for movies that should've had actors that at least look like they come from that culture. But then for movies like Kite Runner, where yes it is very culture of the film is very important, they have to go and take kids directly from Afghanistan and essentially totally fuck up their lives. When a kid from a much more lenient country would have been fine. I don't think people who saw Kite Runner, would have known the difference if the kids were from Afghanistan or Italy. I don't understand where they decide to draw the line?

The entertainment industry in this country is trying to brainwash people into thinking GEEKS ARE COOL. Well they are not. They can make Shia the new Indy & Geekenhaal a prince, but they still suck. They've pushed ganster rap music & games about car theft. Wake up people - no wonder our society is going down the toilet. In other countries people are living longer & growing taller & getting a better quality of life. Our dollar is becoming more wothless every day & we risk becoming a second rate nation. Stop pandering to the lowest common denominator & take our country back from ultra liberal disease. It's great we have a all inclusive society, but we now risk electing someone who has no experience & is just a smooth talker.

Nicholas Hooper has already been confirmed as composer for Half-Blood Prince. Williams is due to return for the finale.

Cliff Curtis for this role? I know he's not ethnically correct. But he is slowly becoming a big action star (haven't seen 10,000 BC though which looks to be his biggest leading role yet). And he was good in that movie where Ethan Hawke was downgraded from star to co-star for Oscar "ETHNIC" quota purposes. Just as long as they don't end up with that Syid guy from Lost he would be terrible. Not quite as bad as Legars bottom, because at least he has some emotion. Ledgars bottom has only been in one movie where his acting mattered, October Sky.

While I definitely agree this casting is WAYYYYYY off the radar, everybody laughed and winced and hated the casting of Michael Keaton in a little movie called Batman in 1989, and yet until Christian Bale, he was the best one to don the batsuit. Now i'm not saying that Gyllenhall is on the same level as Keaton, not even close, I am just pointing out that odd casting doesn't always spell disaster.

(1) small proportions or not, geeks are still part of the problem. bruckheimer makes shit(except for that 2 movies). if you guys keep watching, he'll keep giving you the same. (2) WTF ron howard gotta do with anything??? i'm talking about geeks and bruckheimer. it's not a healthy relationship! (4) yeah? the one or two of you maybe. oh you think if the same geeks who went into the LOTR movies went also to kungfu hustle, the movie will flop stateside? and oh, lost and heroes have WHITE leads. (5) it's hard for hollywood to take chances with 100 or so millions dollars projects, when it's been proven again and again you won't even go see a stephen chow's movie with one tenth the budget. (6) jake's a great actor. if keanu can do kungfu, and toby can swing like tarzan, jake can do anything. he's not the problem, it's the american audience.

The problem is the characters themselves. Casting Keaton made brilliant sense because of something Burton himself noted back when they were filming, though the fanboys didn't "get it" at the time simply because the batsuit was kept tightly under wraps. Basically, Burton pointed out that Batman is two people. First, you have Bruce Wayne, millionaire playboy, who onscreen has to exude a strong sense of LIKABILITY to the viewing audience, to dramatically show WHY he always gets his way in the boardroom or the bedroom. And Keaton at the time was considered a likable star, seeing him on the screen people just LIKED him and thus took to Bruce Wayne. But second, there was something that Burton and Keaton knew -- something that all the fans weren't aware of UNTIL that historic day when Warner Bros. released the first trailer and people literally went bat shit over it. Come on, remember your history: anyone remember how people were literally sneaking out of their own movies at the theaters at the malls and multiplexes at the right time JUST to see the BATMAN trailer? Anyone remember what a media sensation that first trailer actually caused back in 1989? And it was because of my second point. The ace that Burton and Keaton had kept up their sleeves was that Batman would NOT go running around in a cloth costume like Adam West - instead he was going to have this fucking molded rubber suit that made even Keaton look totally BAD ASS. When the first stills were released of Keaton standing next to the Batmobile, which itself looked cool as all fuck to people, everyone suddenly realized "Holy shit! They really ARE playing this straight!"...and hence a blockbuster was born.

PRINCE OF PERSIA's casting doesn't have the luxury of that same one actor/duel role structure. Gyllenhaal is your lead, straight through, and he doesn't get to put on a molded Persian cloth outfit. He doesn't get to wear a mask to hide his face, where so long as he has a cleft chin it will still look good. It's HIM...He's the guy we have to LOOK AT THE WHOLE TIME, which is why everyone is instantly gagging big time over this. The analogy to Keaton being likable Keaton onscreen and then suiting up to leap into action is just not a comparable case to this HORRIBLE miscasting...

Oded Fehr was actually the first person I thought of when they announced this thing. The only problem he's 37 and in Hollywood or Bruckheimer's eyes he's probably considered too old for the part versus Gyllenhaal who is 27. Which is sort of fucked up because Harrison Ford was 33 when STAR WARS came out and no one thought Han Solo was old and ready to be put out to pasture, and certainly no one thought he was an unbelievable action hero when RAIDERS came out and he was actually 39 (2 years OLDER than Oded is now). Speaking as someone who has turned the big 4-0 and who is in good shape and feels like he's in the prime of his life, I fucking hate aegism in Hollywood since they keep skewing things YOUNGER, which to me makes things like "action heroes" more and more UNBELIEVABLE since they aren't MEN leaping into action anymore, it's just teens and kids who somehow think at 22 (or younger) they've learned all their is to learn in the world.

I thought Oded was great in THE MUMMY FILMS. He was dashing, heroic, good looking -- but the knock he might have had against him is that he wasn't the classic blond-haired, blue eyed white guy. But for a PRINCE OF PERSIA movie, I think he would have been great. Ironically, when I played the games and thought of a movie version, he was who I first pictured...
