Highlander was a tremendous movie that a remake can do great justice to. My only problem with the original movie is that Greg Widen must have let his kid write the last 10 minutes of the script or something. It deserves a remake just to fix the injustice of that atrocious ending. Oh, and all the existing Sequels don't even merit a mention, so ignore them completely.

STOP THE REMAKES. This is getting ridiculous. There are too many good scripts sitting on the shelves...Too many out of work writers to continue making all this un-original crap. And another thing...If you're going to remake something...Remake a movie that wasn't any good to begin with. Highlander did very well and was popular enough to spawn many sequels. We don't need another Highlander. We don't need another Terminator. We don't need another Alien/Aliens. We need new ideas. New concepts. Stop this shit now.

by picardsucks
May 20th, 2008
04:13:33 PM
Now this could actually be cool as the writers of Iran Man are doing it and not the dummies and hacks from the destroyed Highlander franchise who ruined a super fucking cool movie which should have been a stand alone not a fucking franchise. Christopher Lambert can certainly be Rameriez or even Adrian Paul as come to think of it he looks and sounds exactly like younger Sean Connery (even though he is 50 himself) Clancy Brown should be the Kurgan if there is a Kurgan in the film. But this should be about Conner MacLeod the Highlander not fucking Duncan and Lambert should be in it somehow.

by DC Films
May 20th, 2008
04:14:35 PM
Just keep Duncan out of a remake. Gerald butler is good as Connor, but one of the things that made it work was the fucked up casting of Lambert as a Scot. I'd like to see Benicio Del Toro as the Kurgan (please get a good actor for this part, not a body builder!!! Beauty of the original is Clancy Brown's phenomenal performance. Gonna be hard to replace Connery - look at the trouble they had with Bond...

It isn't a question of whether the original holds up but whether we need another film with the exact same story and main character. We can use more films like Highlander...Just not the identical product. The film industry is concerned about piracy and why they aren't bringing in the box office profit they used to...THIS IS WHY. Nothing new at the multiplex. People are bored by the output. One of the reasons that the comic industry has seen a boom in recent years is because there are actually original ideas being written in comic books right now.

Another day, another remake announcement. Jesus H Christ, what's wrong with Hollywood these days? Oh how I yearn for the glory days of the 80s...Indy, Back To The Future, Gremlins, Terminator, Beverley Hills Cop, Rockys, Rambos, Empire Strikes Back, Return Of The Jedi, Ghostbusters, An American Werewolf In London, The Goonies, Aliens, Tron..all of them 100% original work based on nothing but original scripts. Remember those days, Hollywood? Some of us do too, and it's very sad to see how far the studios have fallen since then.

Cuntlappers, the fucking lot of you! Remaking HIGHLANDER is like remaking STAR WARS - don't be so fucking ridiculous! First, fuck Duncan and the Series That Time Forgot - there should have been only one! Who's going to do the Macleod intensity that Lambert gave it? That world-wearyness, that transatlantic accent that gave Connor an authentic air of a man who has lived EVERYWHERE, in every time? Who's going to match the flair and sense of cavalier fun that Connery gave to Ramirez? And WHO THE FUCK has the brass bollocks to dare think they are fit to step into the shoes of the mighty Clancy Brown?

This fucked-up idea is dead on arrival. You may as well get Rupert Wainwright to direct and fuck this dead horse properly. Hey, why not Shia as Connor? Fucking Hannah Montana as Heather! Hey, Cam Gigandet as the Kurgan! And get fucking NKOTB to do the soundtrack! Fuck this franchise royally!

Or utter the dread words that will kill ANY franchise... ROB FUCKING ZOMBIE!!!

My God I must have seen the original Highlander at least 40-50 times during my High School years. My friend and I would quote it verbatim. It was our absolute favorite movie at that time. Queen's music from that film still kicks ass and is inextricably linked to it.

I fucking named my first born son Connor for God's sake!

If they absolutely MUST remake this film, at least they got some decent writers, but I'm not at all sold on them remaking it in the first place.

Corinne Russell was in a few Benny Hill episodes, including the skit where a schoolboy Benny takes in a striptease show featuring Corinne dancing topless in a g-string with a big inflatable ball obscuring her chest. Entranced by Corinne's maginficent side boob and on stage flexibility, Benny uses a slingshot to pop the ball but it turns out Corinne is actually an inflatable girl. TOTAL BUMMER.

One of her other memorable appearances on the show was as a topless sunbather. Thankfully, we get a pretty good look at her this time, though is still isn't a full frontal shot.

Google her for actual Page Three pics. Very nice. :)

In fact, after seeing the abortion that was 'The Source,' I had a million different ideas about how to continue the Highlanderverse that didn't suck. I love the story of the Immortals. While the original film is classic, the story isn't and the writers could easily rework the story and not paint themselves into corners like Panzer and crew did. I've always thought Highander was a franchise with tremendous potential that was ultimately squandered. Even the series, which I do prefer to the movies, and had quite a few brilliant moments, fizzled out in the end. I wish they had ended the show with season 5 and had the next movie being McLeod defeating Ahriman. And not done the waste of time that was season 6. Anyway, I'm all for a reboot.

I have to side with the detractors for 2 reasons. i) It doesn't need a remake - the original was good enough. But if you could erase all of the sequels, that would be good. ii) Remakes are the lazy stooge of the weak mind. I don't think the writers are to blame for it though. As someone said earlier its the studios who are no longer willing to take risks. Mark my words, it'll be their undoing over time.

Highlander is a great, albeit flawed film, and one I wouldn't be angry seeing remade. If it were done right, it could DEFINITELY improve some of the original's flaws, namely Lambert and Connery's hammy acting, the terrible scenes with the 'Brenda' character, and the awful you-can-see-the-strings ending. Flesh out the Kurgan's character a bit more, show more of the flashbacks with McCleod living through both World Wars, etc, make Ramirez more badass, remove the awful sub-plot with Brenda figuring out who McCleod is, and I'll buy that for a dollar.

but Highlander really could use a total reboot. Wipe away the shi.. I mean, 'sequels' and start over. I love the original, have many copies in various formats. But it really has not aged well, unless you are just to total 80's fan it's very very dated. I can see them replacing Duncan and even Ramirez with different actor pretty easily, but I dunno about The Kurgan, he was a pretty great fucking villian and really owned the role.

The sequels... yea.. let's not talk about those, esp the last DTV one.

Highlander 2 raped my childhood ....

while I still was a child! Well, okay, I've gotten over that. But, honestly, I mean ... I only saw it in a German dubbed version, albeit I'm a Kraut. Yes, sure, the wirework is ridiculous ... today. But there are things, that are just classic about that movie and I am not talking about the soundtrack which was effin' great. The scene transistions? From Highlander to the Mona Lisa painting? Awesome stuff! Don't get me wrong, I dug the series. But Mulcahy NEVER got close to this. The only thing I liked was The Tower with Dolpg Lundgren (yeah, yeah I know ... the crappiest CGI helicopter EVER right at the beginning) because it was a nice little movie that still works, becuase it was - to some extent - character based. Man, I noever thpught I'd write something like this ... but there you have it. They can ONLY pull it off, if they remake it in a way, that I heard was the first idea of the orginal crater (whose name does not come to my mind right now ... was it William S. Panzer?), being that the Highlander is a guy hunted by his past, disgusted by mankind and its inherent viloence and stuff .. going down a far darker alley than the original. But that is NOT what I expect H-Wood addicted producers to do these days. Just my 2 cents. And BTW two movie remakes featuring a QUEEN soundtrack in A BLASTED SINGLE DAY? Splendid. More posthum Mercury exploitation to come along ... Who wants to live forever. I DON'T. Harry, all the best for your surgery. Keep going, man.

This movie only worked back then and it's kind of a cult favorite. and there were 3 things going for it. 1. Queen soundtrack 2. Russell Mulcahy's film transitions and cinematography. I enjoyed the last scene fighting in the warehouse with the camera spinning around them. lol. 3. Sean Connery It would be like trying to re-do the princess bride movie. could u imagine that! (Omg i shouldn't have mentioned that movie, they'll probably remake that too along with Time Bandits lol)

There's one thing that always bugged me about the original.. when an immortal defeats another, he gains the other "powers" and becomes more powerful. They only brushed upon this in one of the gay sequels where one killed an illusionist and gained his powers. Wouldn't it be cool if the winner gained the others memories and skills... maybe even a magical or special ability. Would also be cool for a trilogy. Introduce many characters, some evil, some good.. and as the movies play out, they are narrowed down to a few and we don't know who will be the last. Could be cool. Also props to whoever said Desmond from Lost... he'd be perfect... and he's Scottish!!!

Dear Hollywood - please for fucks sake, stop remaking films that don't need it. The originals are probably as good as they could be and the whole reason you think they need remade is the warm feeling we get from watching a "cool film" we saw when we were young. Now, I realize that some of you were only born when films such as Highlander was made making it seem like it's almost a "golden oldie" All I have to say is well done in being the "best at sorting letters in the mail room" and rising up the studio ladder so quickly but for fucks sake get a grip of yourself and ask someone over 38 if they think a film needs remade and leave films like Highlander and Robocop or Indiain Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull off the remake list. We know and love a lot of the films we grew up on and gladly watch them with nostalgia and a forgiveness to the bad effects and dodgy visible wires that we just WON'T give a remake. So please, enough

They should just remake absolutely atrocious movies with decent premises and see if they can't do better this time around. The "decent premises" bit isn't even really necessary; just re-making atrocious movies that are universally disliked would be amusing enough.

Showgirls - because a movie about a woman taking her clothes off can be done better than that.

Swept Away - well, take away Madonna and the other douchebag and put in an uber hot actress with, well, why not, another uber hot actress and you've got yourself a movie. Like Jessica BIel and Jessica Alba.

The Butterfly Effect. without kutcher and the shitty ending.

Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot. put spielberg or scorsese on this and see what they can do. hilarity will ensue, intentional or not.

Superbabies. Just for shits and giggles.

Seven Squared: Morgan Freeman sends Brad Pitt a fake severed-Gwyneth Paltrow-head as a (very inappropriate) gag. Pitt freaks out in jail and escapes, looking for Morgan and enlisting the help of Kevin Spacey's ghost. Hilarity ensues.

Hoosiers 2: Jimmy Chitwood becomes addicted to heroin, cocaine and methamphetamines in college, with Dennis Hoppers help. Hack-man comes in and arranges for an intervention.

Highlander was the very first thing that I recorded to VHS tape. I didn't own a VCR when I lived at home and moved out with friends when I was 19. One of my friends owned a VCR, and I bought some blank tapes to try the thing out. I checked the Showtime guide, and some cool sounding movie about sword fighting immortals was about to air, so I stuck in a tape and recorded it. I probably watched that copy of Highlander a hundred times. It was one of the most awesome things that I had ever seen.

Any writer or director that thinks it is a good idea to remake this film is probably a second rate hack that can't aspire to something better.

Sadly in the Highlander Conner McCloud universe, Duncan wouldn't fit. Considering how he "killed' Conner, who has won the prize, oh about three times! Lambert is entirely to old to play Conner, and he would be an odd choice playing Rameriz. I would prefer a complete reboot with a new cast. Adrian Paul is very underrated, he should fire his agent.

There was only ever Connor MacLeod of the clan MacLeod. Either way, I was shocked to learn Lambert is native to Long Island, but grew up in Geneva, Switzerland speaking French. I still don't get why the "Frenchman" played the Scot, while the Scot played the Spaniard. One of my all time fantasy/sci-fi favs, despite the bizarre casting. Useless side note, Clancy Brown's borther is a lawyer in Cleveland. We hung out together with a group of friends in Nantucket almost twelve years ago. The resemblance is similar, but defined. Still, he recalled the number of people he could lipread mouthing, "fuck stick" due to the familial resemblance. Shawshank fans abound, no doubt. Either way, cool dude. Highlander Rollercoaster
by calrabjohns
May 21st, 2008
02:20:36 AM
This series in all its incarnations is a very conflicted one for me. If it were a roller coaster, I feel it would rise slowly to the top with the first movie, then take a terrible plunge down with the second that takes the breath away for all the wrong reasons. The TV series follows, which has it rise up for me again, and then it dips because the third movie is made in the middle of the TV incarnation. It rises once more until the sixth season, where it descends and the roller coaster ride is no longer an apt picture as another iteration with The Raven comes. There's no more track on the rollercoaster. It turns out this ride never finishes as it's continually falling down a bottomless hole with two blighted live action movies and an anime that ultimately leaves a bad taste in the mouth. This remake should not happen. Any fan of Highlander should be content that there's finally a videogame for this series, which hopefully will let me crawl out of the abyss and I can say I'm a fan without having to cringe as much from all the sneering that follows with that statement.

Oh yes, that's right, i can feel the quickening as he approaches the Directors chair to cut off Highlander's head and turn it into a piece of Resident Evil shite. I reckon he and Russell Mulcahay chatted about it while making Resident Evil 3 and viola, here it is..! Please, no... Davis/Panza were lucky with the original that they got great up'n coming talents like Mulcahay and Lambert (even if they've made nothing much since) and they need that luck again. No sign of it in the sequels. Even though the narrative was butchered in Highlander 2 (partially due to a crash in the Dollar fucking up their budget the budget in while shooting in Argentina) it's still a better Highlander movie than any of the other sequels. For a start it looks cinematic, with a sweeping camera, unlike the rest which look more like TV-movies. Would be good to have Mulcahay Co-Produce this, but i imagine he's not speaking to Davis/Panza. They need a lot of luck, or a lot of money for the talent, or it's gonna be laughable.

Let's make films of the Jack Reacher novels instead. Or Stephen Baxter's Manifold sequence. Lovecraft's Mountains of Madness is long overdue. Vince Flynn pisses all over Tom Clancy, don't bother rebooting Jack Ryan again fer chrissakes. A movie about the Ottoman Empire invading Malta in 1562 when it was held by Knights of the Hospitaller order? It's like 300 but with cannons and siege warfare. Did Neuromancer ever get optioned? Lets film some of those daft Matthew Reilly action novels, Ice Station Zero is practically a screenplay already and wasn't someone making Contest? I can think of this stuff in 10 minutes while sitting here scratching my arse. The writers got themselves a pay rise, how about earning it?

They did make a sequel where all the immortals came from another planet and saved Earth by rebuilding the o-zone layer, I kid you not, and that sucked worse than Paris Hilton (make an effort woman) it had nothing to do with the original other than the character names. Truly, truly awful

For fucks sake. Stop remaking perfectly good films. They fucked the franchaise up the arse with a truly rotten sequel in Highlander 2, then a couple straight to video (one with Mario Van Peoples!) and then that awful, awful TV show. Leave it alone...watch the orignal, pretend the sequels and TV show never happened and then have a beer, cheat on your wife, or whatever.

I'm Scotch! Of course I dig Highlander, it was one of my favourite 80's films and the Queen soundtrack made it 2wice as good as it would have been. There were a lot of cool things that added to the movie like Connery as the mentor with the weird accent or Clancy Browns Mad performance or Lamberts odd aura. Watched today I guess it could seem a bit lame or camp and it's a bit creaky here and there FX wise so go for it because I always loved the Imortal time spanning love story and Head lopping action! I doubt they'll capture as magical a cast but then again who knows?

I didn't mind Sifi explanation and all that stuff, I think it was a good try to do something new (well, I'm one of the few who didn't mind midichlorians too...lol). It's just was indeed really poorly directed, acted and cuted. Even the europeen cut (that improve the "movie"... a bit) is shit. And H3 was already a remake of the first, with no soul. I'm not against a remake but wait a decade or so, because the first one is still "the only one" for a lot a people.

Now hands up who thinks this idea came from lazy film execs trying to cash in on one of our beloved 80's era action films? Hmmm...maybe they could film it alongside a remake of Robocop and Commando! (That was me being sarcastic by the way)! How 'bout instead of remaking, try unmaking all the sequels and series that shat all over the original...or better yet here's a crazy idea I'm just gonna throw out there...why not come up with an altogether new, original idea for a film!

is because when it ended, you still had no goddam clue what the hell was going on. Why were some people immortal except for the brain stem? Who decided they all needed to kill each other? How come new immortals weren't popping up here and there? How come Ramirez was so old and the other immortals were in their youth?

When they tried to resolve these questions (spoiler: they're space aliens) in the first sequel, they killed the only thing that made the first movie great: its mystery. How many people here felt a 'great disturbance' when they realized that The Force was just a bacterial infection in the blood, and was entirely a genetic anomaly? Yep, everyone. The Force went from this 'energy that moves in and through all things and binds them' to a genetic chromosome or something.

I saw the sequel and walked out vowing to never see anything ever again with the name Highlander in it, and that has held to this day. I saw no subsequent movies, and not a single moment of the television series. Tho Im told the TV show did a good job of 'rebooting' much of what the sequel movies destroyed (spoiler: they're not space aliens anymore), it was still a horrible Sid & Marty Croft adaptation of the original movie.

I like the original, and I'll stick that one anytime I need my highlander fix.

PS to the idiots: a 'highlander' is not an immortal. The immortal who was the focus of the movie was a Highlander, however. Ramirez and Kurgan? Not Highlanders.

Noooooooooooooooo! There can be only one!

I love Highlander. I'm not ashamed to admit it. Yes, the sequels were awful, but the original movie has been one of my all time favourites since I was a kid. It's not perfect, but there is so much I love about that movie and there is just no way a remake will ever capture that kind of magic (pun intended). The central idea is genius and has so many possibilities, the casting tho off the wall (a frenchman as a scot and a scot as an egyptian) but worked brilliantly. Lambert put in a career best performance, Connery was the embodiment of pure charisma and Clancy Brown was one of my fav screen bad guys of all time. Mulcahy's stylish direction was perfect for the material and there were some wonderfully executed sequences. It's a movie that's vastly underated in my eyes - largely because of the terrible spin-offs - and I'll always defend it. It should not be remade. They'll never recapture that magic. I'm not opposed to the whole concept being rebooted, but leave Connor Macleod, Ramirez and the Kurgan alone thank you. And for all of you saying no Duncan, just Connor, I agree completely. Duncan was always a pale TV imitation of Connor - the one true Highlander. There can be only one!

ended in a way that no real sequels could be done properly. This remake could work as a grand epic that takes several films to reach the "Prize". When Connor got the prize at the end of the first film, it was done. Game over. Everything after, (sequels, TV show) looks dumb because of how the first film ended. Now they have a chance to do it right.

Let's take a classic and remake a turd out of it, as if you're going to come up with something more original (or well filmed) than the original. The cuts/scene transitions in Highlander probably rank in the top few movies of all time for me... who is going to top the original Kurgan? Who is going to top Sean Connery? This is a piece of crap waiting to happen. But of course we'll all (including me) probably pay to go see it.

Oh and I may be one of the only people in the world who feels this way, but I didn't think Ironman was all that. It definitely wasn't a written masterpiece to where I'd feel 'awesome those guys are rewriting highlander so it'll be great.' It was extremely predictable and proforma for me. Just standard hollywood summer fare action movie for me... albeit well done on Downey's part.

Hollywood execs everywhere announced this morning that they will stop making remakes and focus on original material. Their response was, 'Well, we saw what people on the internet wanted, and people are tired of remakes. Fuck remakes..so, despite them making us lots of money, we'll scrap them all and focus on original, independent and thought provoking ideas.' ....Yeah right, seriously people, give it a rest, I'm as tired of mostly crappy remakes as you are, but complaining about it won't do a damn thing, especially since middle america, which is who Hollywood truly makes movies for has a 2 year attention span it seems, and forget anything that came out 10-15 or more years ago. I'm sure there are people out there that think Indiana Jones and Iron Man are all new characters for this summer's blockbuster season. This won't make a bit of difference, but please, please please stop complaining about lack of orginality in Hollywood. It's as useless as complaining about the lack of real boobs at a strip club.

There are lots of interesting properties out there that could be made into really kick-ass movie franchises. How about Robert Asprin's M.Y.T.H series, for example? In fact, you could actually make it a coputer-animated series based upon the Phil Foglio illustration style. You'd thnk Hollywood, being teh copycat town it is, wouldn'y jump at the chance to do that one: "Harry Potter meets Shrek!"

Even the director's cut doesn't hold up anymore. My cut would remove any scene with the annoying, hammy cops ("our little Brenda!"), especially the hot dog scene. Also cut out that stupid dude who shoots Kurgan with an UZI, whose only reason for existing is to show that, hey, Kurgan can survive multiple bullet wounds! Just leave scenes of sword-fights, Kurgan terrorizing people, and Conner romancing chicks. Why even have other immortals in the damn movie anyway?
