Hosted by Edgar Wright with Timothy Dalton himself in attendance (who hadn't seen the film in 20 years and never in the U.S.) was the best of the best. No new version could ever beat that experience.

Set it in the 30s - or at least give the costumes and space stuff a retro 30s Alex Raymond type feel. If it's just Flash running around in a black leather jacket or X-Men costume then blah. Tonally, A Flash Gordon movie should be like Star Wars (for obvious reasons). Forget ultra camp, forget Nu-Battlestar style grim and gritty, just make it good old serial-style adventure with agood script and a lick of modern vfx paint.

it was hard to even look at, the TV "Flash". every episode looked like a Vancouver backyard. it's shows like these that really wane the Vancouver image. shows like "X-FILES" used the area better. also, how hard is it to get good actors? the theater is FULL of them. hope whoever runs the new production doesn't go the route of hiring pretty faces. SHOW US SOME ACTING CHOPS! "FLASH GORDON" is really old school cliffhanger matinee adventure stuff (kind of how SKY CAPTAIN tried but made it cold and empty), and no matter who takes over, they've got to really embrace that style, and REALLY REALLY have fun with it =0)

Thats right! Animate it! Give us some of that old style 30's cartoon strip joy. Do it like A Scanner Darkly and give us something that touches the source. I just had a rant about original ideas on the Highlander Remake post, but this is Flash Gordon! He's a constant, like Batman or Superman. But give us something new. A taste of the past wrapped up in all your hi-tech trimmings. One of the best bits about the 80's flash was the intro titles with all the old comic strip Flash on it. Gimme that! GIMME!

fleeing viewers
by Disgustipitated
May 20th, 2008
04:28:26 PM
Yes...the viewers fled because the show stunk not because the theme to the 1980 film version was left out. It was NOT Flash Gordon in any way other than in name. People really need to be aware and/or remember that Flash Gordon has been around since almost the beginning of the 20th century in the form of a comic strip which was a response to Buck Rogers. Both were made into Saturday afternoon serials starring Larry "Buster" Crabbe. Then you have the TV series from the 50s. Then the 1980 film starring Sam Jones(I know most of the AICN guys already know all this...or they should). The song by Queen is iconic, but it's not a necessity for a successful film version of Flash (note: the 1980 film is one of my top ten favorite films of all time, so believe me I'm not bashing it). I'd like to see the new film made into a period piece and be faithful to the original comic strip.

More people might have given it a chance. I actually didn't think it was that bad. It got much better by the season's end. And the whole notion of racial purity and friendly fascism was developed quite well. It just wasn't Flash Gordon, but Flash Gordon-type characters shoehorned into a scifi story. I don't think it was any worse or campy than any of the Stargate shows.

Now that was some good porn. All I remember was some woman strapped a dildo to some dudes face and then rode it. Hot.

One thing you turds might find interesting is that the late William Hootkins, who was Porkins in Star Wars (Yes, the Porkins who was shot over the Death Star while diving with Luke) was the assistant to the scientist Zarkon (or whatever his name was) in Flash Gordon. I interviewed him many years ago, and it was his second role after Star Wars. Hootkins complained that in nearly every movie he was in he DIED. In Flash Gordon he was left behind as the earth started to be destroyed. Thought you might want to know, you turds.

SEANN WILLIAM SCOTT for FLASH!

May 20th, 2008

Anna Valerious, that sounded so stupid - and yet so RIGHT! So long as it's the SWS that can do comedy, mid-level drama (ie not so intense) and decent action - ie the SWS in BULLETPROOF MONK, that idea could really fly. Fuck it, give it camp cameo value and cast Dalton as Ming! Give the character of Aura some kick - I'd love to see Scarlet Jo doing it, but she ain't really an actress - and we need a cool Dale Arden who can kick ass - Erica Durance, maybe? That kind of chick. Give the whole thing to Stephen Sommers, tell him "Like THE MUMMY, not so MUMMY RETURNS and NOWHERE NEAR AS OTT AS VAN FUCKING HELSING!!", and watch it fly. Shit, this ain't STAR WARS - it needs energy, fun, action, a bit of camp, a kick-ass soundtrack (DRAGONFORCE covering FLASH?!? I'm there with leather studded bells on!) and most of all A KICK-ASS ADVENTURE SCRIPT. Forget darkness, seriousness, and any pretence at being something else - MAKE IT A PROPER REMAKE!!!

by kevred
May 20th, 2008
06:03:40 PM
Do they really think they can make a more entertaining version than that one? No way. Some people hate it, but most love it. The problem with stuff today is that it tries so hard not to be uncool that it ends up being bland and safe.

The Queen Flash (maybe a good nickname for it?) was crazy, goofy, confident, colorful, a little sleazy, and it was a hell of a lot of fun for it. It was what the new Speed Racer wants to be. It was glam rock on the screen, baby!

Now tell me anything, ANYTHING, these people put up on the screen today will make people talk the way I just did, 28 years from now.

I rest my case.

in Spandex. A lot of people "don't get" the 1980 Flash Gordon. That's fine. Hate it if you must. But, to paraphrase the recent AICN review of Kingdom of the Crystal Meth, THAT film was "lightning in a bottle." It was a wild sci-fi comic book as Fellini would have made it. Anyone who is thinking of following that act is clearly one of the many who "don't get" that film. Cuz it can't be done. DO NOT FUCK UP MING!!!!!!
by Drath
May 20th, 2008
07:07:56 PM
It's not the lack of the campy Queen song that drove us away from Sci-Fi's Flash, it was the lame-ass white Ming! Even if you don't have the guts to make Ming Asian, the mandarin qualities of his costumes should never be thrown out and for God's sake KEEP THE BEARD!!! Also the show went to hell for the lack of good space ships, the worm-hole instead of rockets approach, the terrible cast, the lazy writing, the stupid squawking HAWKMEN WITHOUT WINGS, the cheap looking sets, the terrible lighting, the fact that no Flash Gordon at all was better than this shit and the incredibly depressing observation that some people were actually supporting it because they didn't know any better.....there were a lot bigger reasons than the Queen theme song not being there. Alas, modern movie composers cannot produce pulp fantasy scores anymore, not even John Williams writes movie themes as good as his old ones (I defy anyone to name theme that even comes close to Star Wars or Indiana Jones or Superman or even Elfman's Batman or Silvestri's Back to the Future march). That's the kind of thing Flash needs, and probably nothing that a modern composer would poop out would be anywhere as good as Queen's song even though it was camp. Look no further than the "determined not to ever have a memorable musical theme" Marvel movies to see how fucked up things are in this area.

Hell, when he was announced as developing a big budget, live action FLASH GORDON that's one time I actually said "You know, that might work." As much of a clusterfuck as this film is destined to be, I'd be pretty happy if Eisner tapped his Sahara lead for the role.

I know this sounds ridiculous but I talked to an ex of mine about two weeks ago (she works as a graphic artist in Vancouver) and she was talking about how she is already working on Flash Gordon. I didn't ask more about it because I didn't really care, but to see that it is only a rumour when I know for a fact that she is working on it is kind of interesting.

and changing the lead actors to black because both Flash Gordon and Highlander didn't have enough black people in them. Toss in some Rap and hip-hop and pimp up the look and you'll have box-office gold. Obama said he would be proud to see a Black Flash in America. Time for a change. Time for some more remakes.

I've been both anticipating and dreading this news. I'm a big fan of Flash Gordon and hope that they can pull it off. (SciFi can't pull anything off, so I'm not worried as some are that it won't transfer well... It's just got be done by the right group of people.) I've got my fingers crossed.

Flash needs to be played by a real man. Even if though dead, his rotting corpse would still be better than the wimpy girly boys who pass for actors these days.

Why not get Queen to score the new film as they did with the first one? It's not as if they'd need Freddie. Oh, and get Brian Blessed back too: "Gordon's ALIVE???!!!"

First of all, nice to meet you. Hope you and Velkan are having a fun time in the great beyond! You said in your post: "He may be at Paramount now, but I wouldn't rule him out entirely. And if he puts a lot of his stable of actors in it (Like he's doing with "G.I. Joe"), that would be excellent."

I actually posted about Sommers for 2 reasons. First, on IMDB his former listing for being involved with FLASH GORDON has long since disappeared, and its been replaced instead with WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE -- which is not listed as being in active development with Speilberg producing. Second, I live here in Hollywood and awhile back I was hanging out at Universal Studios and I took the lot tram ride at the theme park, and as the tram approached THE MUMMY section (which used to be the old SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN spinning tunnel), I noticed another intersting thing. About a year ago on the ride the tram car mounted TV monitors would kick in and it would be Sommers saying something like, "Hi, I'm Stephen Sommers. Director and Writer of the MUMMY films and Universal's upcoming big budget FLASH GORDON." But now that's been yanked as well. So my guess is he's totally off the project at this point -- in fact, this news piece basically indicates that Eisner is looking to direct this.

Which brings up something no one's really talked about yet either: for crying out loud, am I the only one who thought SAHARA was an utter piece of crap? I know one thing: as a fan of the old Buster Crabbe serials, the Alex Raymond comic and the 80s movie for all its glorious wackiness, I'm not looking at SAHARA and rubbing my hands together and thinking, "Oh yeah! The amazingly talented visionary (cough! cough!) who brought this piece of crap to life is just who I want to tackle FLASH GORDON next!"

Looking forward to the new Flash Gordon, but I hope they stay away from doing an Origins version. We all know how Flash and his motley crew saved every one of us from Mings diabolical plans, the 80’s camp top fun movie is on the TV every Christmas, so why don’t they move on and have Flash & Dale have a different adventure (there’s a lot of source material from the old Republic series). But bring back Brian Blessed, you can just imagine the opening of the new trailer ‘GORDONS ALIVE!’ being bellowed down your lug hole, I would be so there.
I vote for a DOC SAVAGE film.

They do what they should have done with the series and make it fantastical. Mongo can be another dimension, sure, but make it so the 'Moons of Mongo' are floating islands in nether with different terrains. You can have an infinite number of them and there's your adventures.

and I hope not, because lightening never strikes in the same place twice, then they need to find the same blend of American actors that cannot act and high end British/ European thesps.

In what other film do you get RSC actors like Brian Blessed, The creator of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, A Blue Peter Presentor, A future James Bond, THE FUCKING EXORCIST, The fiddler on the roof dude, and others mangling some of the worst dialogue ever put on screen.

Flash, I love you but we only have 14 hours to save the earth!

I consider it a classic. It's part of that unique era of Big Trouble In Little China, Buckaroo Banzai larger than life, fantasy "quirkyness". Great to see the love. It only works in context of the high camp of the movie it was in - and don't get me wrong, I loved it. It was the icing on the camp cake. But imaging if Tim Burton had used the theme from the 1960's Batman series or the BIFFPOWs in the fight scenes. It would have been a disaster.

That, my friends, is the single greatest line of cinematic dialogue in the history of the universe.

The 1980 Flash Gordon is a once in a lifetime treat. Nothing will ever be as gloriously stupid and wonderful ever again. Oh, and Ornella Muti in Flash Gordon made me feel funny in my pants when I was 12. Good times, good times.

If you got John Favreau to direct, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa for Ming, Chris Pine as Flash, you might have a good start. Megan Fox or Jordana Brewster as Dale. Maybe get Zhang Ziyi as Ming's Daughter. Treat it as a very steampunk style adventure and you might have something worth using the Queen soundtrack on. No Flash as a football player. Make him a world class pentathlete so he has the skills to challenge Ming. Use some of the techniques for Sky Captain. Make Paul Giamatti Prof. Zarkov, that might be fun.
