doing a live gig about a year back. He did just under an hour (for his own show thats poor) and the guy just looked uncomfortable. You got a real sense the audience were humouring HIM by laughing. Hey I like his TV work but his stand up (it was the Fame Tour) was amateur to the point where if an unknown had done the act then they would have died a death.

I don't understand this dick riding of Ricky "one trick pony" Gervias... The Office was alright at best in a observe human behaviour kind of way... But his stand up is just not funny, he's done well to get as far as he has but basically plays the same character ( a different version of himself/David Brent - I seriously can't tell the difference between the 2) in everything I've seen him in...

I love how he pops up in GTA4! Icing on an alredy Heavily Iced Cake (imagine a cake covered in Icing with Icing oozing down the sides over rivulets of icing with extra icing)Ricky you are Icing!

Anyway, He is a funny bloke. He used to come into the theatre bar in London where me and my mate went to chat shit coz it was a decent dark wee cellar type place unlike all the noisy, overpopulated, overlit cattlemarkets and his table always seemed to be having a jolly good laugh. I was once next to him having a piss in the tiny bogs and struggled really hard not to say something unfunny or David Brentish to him , he probably thought I had a burning VD! I think the most I managed was 'alright?' Anyway I don't understand how you can Hate someone who spreads mirth and so much good old fashioned office torture around! although I used to Hate Robin Williams with a passion!and Chevy Chase, and Adam Sandler, and I throw darts at Will Ferrel, and...

Yes the Office and Extras were v. good as were the first two live shows. But 'Fame' was awful and his performance at the Diana concert was truly painful to watch (and not in a funny way). And I'll never forgive him for penning the worst Simpsons episode ever which is no mean feat given their recent track record.

I admit, lately he's been a bit off, but it happens to the best of 'em. He still created one of the funniest, most memorable and most iconic comedy characters of all time. If he never does anything as great as The Office again, I honestly can't hold it against him.

Man I wish I just had time in my life to watch DVD special features. Thats why I feel like a majority of them are useless. Don't get me wrong there are some amazing special features out there. But I have such a busy schedule that I usually only have time to watch something and move on. I mean I have at least 20 DVDs I've bought and haven't watched, just because I'll keep putting rental movies and TV shit before it. God damn TiVo, making it immpossible for me to ever miss a TV show I want to see.

Yeah, I get that. TV is fuckin relentless, man. I've resorted to mostly just buying complete seasons and watching episodes back to back. As for movies, I've made a conscious decision to put the commentary on if it's something I've already seen (even if, most of the time, I'm not in the mood for it). I usually end up not regretting it. Michael Mann is by far the best movie commentator around. Listening to him is often just as enjoyable as watching his movies.

Every Simpsons episode has at least one moment where it brings a smile or chuckle even when the rest of it is dire. The Gervais episode couldn't even do that. But I'd be interested to know what's considered the worst episode by everyone else.

That commentary for They Live is pretty cool, yeah. You should listen to the one he did for The Thing with Kurt Russel. They also did a fun commentary for Big Trouble In Little China.

Worst I ever heard? Zack Snyder's commentary for 300. It's basically him and two other guys (the DP and effects supervisor, I think). The other guys hardly say anything, and all Snyder does is point out the FX shots. "See that? That's green screen." "See that spear? We digitally sharpened it." "See those birds?" Horrible. Why didn't they just get Frank Miller to do it.

This has nothing to do with Ricky Gervais, by the way.

Agreed, he's a great writer, but as a stand-up he's dismal, and as an actor he's a one-trick pony. Anyone else who sat through his shows, watched him on The Sunday Show or the dismal 'Ricky Gervais Meets' will agree. Fat, annoying, smug fucker.

and ya, i know people laff at that dude in the dress and that scottish guy who is gonna be in xfiles, but stand up and observational humor is an american creation...the brits are great at sketch comedy (goon show and monty python top anything ever done in america) and absurdist humor...why gervais thinks he needs a standup career is beyond me...hes a writer....keep on writing, and making absurdist series like extras...and shit, the guy gave a shoutout to aicn...that is good for some love
btw, one watches extras not for gervais

...I'm pretty sure he's actually pretty humble and down to earth. I think he comes off as arrogant at times because he's slightly embarrassed by his own success. He said in an interview once that just after The Office came out, someone asked him to do a corporate video and the check was bigger than his dad's annual wage. That's gonna feel weird for a working class guy like him.

Also, the uk has plenty of excellent standups, it's just that our sense of humour doesn't travel as well as you might think. By the way, Monty Python was 20 years ago, we've moved on. I don't understand why Americans still hold it up as the pinnacle of British humour.

All up there with Python and all pissing royally on Ricky bloody Gervais.

I thought he was only able to act as the same character in everything he does, untill the penultimate scene of the Extras Christmas special, where he actually, you know, acted. He was good too. Mind you, it has to be said that Stephen Merchant, Ashley Jensen and Shaun Williamson all deliver far better comic turns in that show than Gervais does.

but i find your comedy shows hilarious...and why do i put python up as the pinnacle of brit humour? because after spike milligan, it is...and has been oft copied here in the states...snl got the idea of skits without real endings from python...and everything that python did still sounds fresh today...want more examples of brit humour that i love? fawlty towers, steptoe and son, ab fab, the it crowd, the mighty boosh....comedies that would never have made it to american tv (or did end up on american tv but in a totally stripped down form)and let me say this...why in the fuck are they wasting jensen's talent in the pos ugly betty...oh, and louis ck may not be a genius, but dane cook wouldnt have a career without him

Q9 was the first one I was old enough to 'get', but I take your point.

'Spitting Image' was a topical satire that pricked the pompousity of the British politicians of the day and made them into charicatured laughing-stocks. It took the wind out of their sails and the dobbers in charge here today could do with some of that!

'Bottom', I'll grant you, is an acquired taste, but there's something about seeing Rih Mayall have his head repeatedly slammed in the 'fridge door that puts a smile on my face. I haven't smiled once at Gervais, ever. Harry Hill now, there's a different story...

What fucking planet are you on? In all honest, how much British stand-up do you get to see? Try Frankie Boyle. He's funnier in his sleep than anything I've seen coming out of America recently. In terms of comedy series, I think on the whole we have a better selection (see Peep Show, Black Books, etc.), but Arrested Development is hands-down the funniest tv show I've ever seen.
