a script, though. Every line of dialogue and element of story structure you write that sucks for whatever reason, you KNOW it sucks, and are thus obligated and compelled to fix it. After meticulously picking through hundreds of other people's movies, you have to be putting your own script through the same process. Sounds frustrating. Ebert's approach is safer (though he did famously write that one pseudo-porn, right?)

sucks... I don't think anybody sets out to write a particularly shitty movie. Even if you have written something you think is great, its very possible that you are wrong. And often, if you come back to it the next day, you'll see that what you wrote was laughable. Thats why when you first start writing, even finishing a screenplay is so fucking difficult. You almost have to NOT CARE that its crap... just so you can finish it! Then of course... try to make it less crap.

...second Jeepers Creepers flick??? Anyhoo, I find their writing to be pretty good, I really liked Cigarette Burns and have been a huge Carpenter fan for decades (yes, an elder is actually posting on AICN). I am quite interested in seeing this work, hoping it holds up to that bar. (Someone say bar? I'll have a beer...) The demon-baby one was good, but Nicotero's physical effects kinda' took me outta' that story...especially the baby itself which looked rather...well...bad. At the very least, I trully appreciate someone aiming for the fences and giving it originality and effort, so thanks to both of you for your work and I look forward to your successes in the near future. And the busted tee girls are still super hot and make me tickle in my no spot...

Someone mentioned Jeepers... no, it wasnt called that. they wanted to use it as the subtitle (Jeepers Creepers 2: Like A Bat out of Hell, if memory serves) and Jim Steinman (writer/sort of producer of the album, Loaf was a glorified hired gun) blocked them from doing so. Mori and Swan have even less of a chance since they want it as the full on title. Judging from the response of some TBers, the proof WHY is already there - people will think its Loaf related. Even though it was a phrase, when it comes to pop culture it is associated with one and only one thing.

You should post the "Bat Out of Hell" script in pdf and have daily postings on AICN about production (if you're a part of the production, you know, like a journal or blog. My point is that all of us here could see the movie making process through a writer's eyes and words from spec script through release. You should persue this and make a book deal to publish the script and journal that could coinside with the film's marketing and be part of the DVD package. We come to this site because we love movies and this is a good chance to learn more about the art and collaborative process of filmmaking.

The cargo hold of the plane is transporting a very desirable ancient artifact- probably from South America or the Middle East. Think the film THE RELIC. The hijackers want this Artifact. It means something to their people. They trigger something on the relic that accidentally releases the evil creature within. They fight it off in the plane. Hopefully the plane crashes on a deserted island. If it doesn't then it's gonna feel a lot like snakes on a plane. If the hijackers know nothing about the artifact, and that's not the reason for them hijacking. Then you have an Indiana Jones like guy on the plane with his crew, he might be a she, and this person and his/her crew doesn't fully know what the artifact truly is. it on it's way to a university for study and or a museum. The hijackers find it when they start moving moving people to the cargo hold, and again they accidentally release the ancient evil within when they start tampering with it, maybe it's made of solid gold and thats why they fuck with it. Expect one of these guesses to be pretty close to the actual plot.

You're so on point about screenwriting and writing in general in what you wrote above. No one ever thinks their own work sucks, I think good writers have to always hate their work instinctively (or atleast be able to look at it critically) so they can push themselves to do something better each time out. I have written two screenplays that are still in early draft stages, and I'm just letting them sit now as I gain more experience and knowledge of the craft. They will both get rewritten at some point, but since I wrote them with much less knowledge than I have now they're a bit of a mess, structurally. Meanwhile now, for my third screenplay, I'm writing a massive treatment with reminders from Robert McKee and the like scattered throughout, making sure the frikkin' treatment is a masterpiece before I write word one of the actual screenplay. It's tough to get valuable feedback on your work when you're just starting out too, because you either get the unadulterated love from people that like you too much to be honest, or insanely off base criticism from people who can't be constructive (I have watched feedback turn sour from other writers as soon as I say a negative word about THEIR work.) Anyway, congratulations Mori, hope this moves forward with all deliberate speed.

my name is Shane Black. But no really... the only way to get screenplays written is to pretend to yourself that you are Ted Elliot or Terry Rossio, and that your film is GOING to get made. You've already been payed for it. And you are writing it to a deadline. That way, your less inclined to just give up after you write something stupid! At least thats how I manage it. Dialogue is the killer though. It's not hard to see why people like George Lucas and Michael Bay don't give a flying fuck about what their characters say... because writing dialogue IS difficult. Screenwriters who can put words into peoples mouths convincingly and interestingly have my respect. Mori where are you?

Of course, the passengers instantly begin beating up the Muslim men, thinking this is some new Al Quaeda terror plot. Coincidentally, Wesley Snipes is being transported to the federal pen by a couple of U.S. Marshals. The marshals are stricken by fear of rabies and cower in the loo. Snipes takes the opportunity to break free from his plastic cuff-ties and chases the injured echo-locating nocturnal mammal about the plane, using Capoiera on unsuspecting passengers who dare to point and say, "Ooh! Denzel Washington!" or ask him for an autograph. During all the confusion, the bat makes its way to first class where it is promptly stepped on and squished by none other than the man, the myth, the legend himself - Meatloaf. Roll credits.

I agree that you should have boundless optimism when you're writing your first draft, but when you type that FADE OUT you have to instantly switch into I'm-Akiva-Goldsman-and-I-just- wrote-Batman-and-Robin-mode. I think as long as you have the passion to keep writing, if it's your obsession, then nothing is going to stop you from doing it, least of all the suspicion that you're no good. As for dialog, it's amazing how phoney it sounds when you leave a script for a month or two and then go back and read it. And I consider dialog to be one of the things I do fairly well... But I still notice seriously cringe-worthy lines and whole chunks of pure exposition with a bit of objective distance.

To be honest, I'm not sure what I'd consider to be something I do well. Certainly ain't dialogue. All my characters speak the same when I write. Don't really write action scenes... because in a script you can't do it in much detail. I think I write transitions and parentheticals very well... lol. And, may I ask... whats with the Cantonese name?
