This is happy news for me. Reaper, a fantasy dramedy about a young man forced to work for The Devil, and Eli Stone, a fantasy dramedy about a lawyer/prophet following instructions from a Higher Power, make perfect bookends.

The article linked to has a side bar link to an article about Boston Legal renewed and scheduled for the fall instead of mid-season. This was part of a deal to get a domestic adaptation of the British series Life On Mars (that David E. Kelley holds the American rights to) into production with the company that was doing "October Road". I'm personally sorry to see Women's Murder club canceled, but TV's hardly short of either criminal procedurals or eye candy shows with fabulous babe casts.

But Eli Stone is really good as well. I like it better then Pushing Daisy's, the cast has a lot more chemistry, and the gimmick hasn't gotten old yet. But really glad Reaper got picked up again, I thought I heard it was canceled.

Actually, I think more scripted series should be 13 episodes...

Like the way it usually works on cable networks, I think most scripted shows would be better off with 13 episodes per season. Many scripted shows (especially dramas) have difficulty sustaining storylines and momentum across 22+ episodes. Plus, if the networks went with a standard 13 episodes per season, they could put twice as many series on the air (different shows for the Fall and Spring seasons); more actors and writers would be working; viewers get to watch a wider variety of shows; and maybe the networks would take more chances on quirky show concepts that draw a smaller audience.

"Veronica Mars: FBI" as a Web series
by Prof. Pop-Cult
May 12th, 2008
06:13:29 PM
I think it would have been cool if Rob Thomas had thought to ask the CW to fund the production of a Web series spin-off. Why would the CW agree to this? Well, to encourage traffic to the CW web site. And I think it could have been do-able from a production cost standpoint: Just shoot a 43-minute pilot for the FBI concept, and split it up into 13 installments that are put on the site every week.
Shorter seasons often mean better tv

I completely agree on the 13 episode season idea. Look at the strength of cable fare like Mad Men and Damages, Battlestar Galactica and The Shield, and Premium content like Dexter, The Wire, or The Sopranos. British TV shows are an even better model, with many shows that would be considered mini-series here in the US. Whether serious drama like Spooks or Life on Mars, lighter shows like Hustle or Robin Hood, or Scifi like Doctor Who and Torchwood, the shorter season frequently makes for a stronger running plot, even when each episode can be very procedural.

I saw this with My Own Eyes this morning: CNBC was covering the Fall TV "business outlook" by (no surprise) covering the NBC "Experience" event today: show stars meet and greet and talk to press.

The cast of JOURNEYMAN was talking to the press!

I know this could have been "file footage" from last year's event, but the whole point of CNBC's coverage was that the strike had changed the nature of today's event, since no pilots were being shown, only meet and greet sorta stuff. Moon Bloodgood and the two low-level stars (the journey dude and his wife) were Standing Right There!

Yay Reaper!

13 is always better than none. The show's progression reminds me of Jericho the year before. A strong pilot followed by some crappy episodes and then it gains it stride and focus.

Reaper started out with the outdated practice of bad guy/demon of the week. People want story arches and the demon of the week stuff got too formulaic fast. Now they have introduced more story arches and put the demon on the back burner in most episodes. It works so much better.

I do agree that 13 episodes may make Reaper stronger. I like the show, but the premise is a little thin to stretch out over 22-24 episodes.

The CW should do 13 episodes as standard...
by Prof. Pop-Cult
May 12th, 2008
11:00:23 PM
This is a network that is trying to both survive and stand out from the other broadcast networks. I think in order to do so, and to save themselves money, they should treat their programming production and air schedule for scripted shows similarly to the way the cable networks do it (e.g. TNT, Spike, FX, etc.). The should have separate shows for the Fall and Spring seasons. Maybe they should also do a summer season of original shows. In this day and age of delayed Webcasts and DVD box sets, they could be known for producing cool, hip scripted series. If Reaper goes on for just a few seasons, of 13 episodes each, it would still be considered a success. Nowadays, it's a lot to ask of people to commit to watching 22+ episodes every season, for every new series.

but not great, by any stretch of the imagination. loved seeing ken marino and michael ian black as the demon couple, though. the excellent cast is what makes the show watchable. if not for them, the show's premise and writing would fall totally flat.

That is, the actress who plays her on BSG is now on Reaper. (Reaper and BSG are both shot in Vancouver.) They already had the guy who plays Tyrol in a cameo earlier in the season. I wonder if the Reaper producers are BSG fans. I'd like to see more BSG stars make appearances on Reaper next season. (I think the actress who played Cally, the guy who plays Gaeta or Michael Hogan (Tigh) would be appropriate to show up. I mention these three since they are Canadian, and may likely be most available to show up for an appearance.)
reason why CW only gave reaper 13 eps
by hellnback
May 12th, 2008
11:38:30 PM
probably cuz they don't have faith in it. they order 13 episodes only and if the show does great they'll order up another batch. if the show bombs during the 13 eps ordered they'll just let the 13 eps run it's course and call it quits.
But what would "24" do with 13 episodes?

I love "Reaper" and think it's just been getting better...it seems it knows where it wants to go now. But one of the best things of the show has consistantly been the performance of Ray Wise as the Devil, almost a glad-handing car salesman, seemingly in a good mood whenever he can get away from Hell. And hey, don't forget that 'Sock' is played by Tyler Labine, who actually had just come off of the one-season "Invasion" (I'm still pissed ABC never gave us a wrap-up to that one!). I'm pleased both "Reaper" and "Eli Stone" will be back.

Past the well-written banter, if they'd get serious and up the ante with character perils or even deaths, we'd be almost in hallowed "Buffy" territory.

will they accept that his visions are divinely inspired and not merely hallucinations?

Now that Women's Murder Club is over, I'm glad they tied up the two major subplots (the kiss me not killer and her love life) in the finale. Nice tidy package, out to make a decent low priced DVD set.

I generally enjoy Reaper a lot when I remember to watch it but I still have trouble thinking of The CW as a 'real' network.

And it's how most shows are I think. They want to do arc stuff, but are forced to do episodic things to get ratings. But yeah, in terms of the storylines, characters, and acting, this show has moved from a guilty pleasure to something I look forward to watching, and maybe one of my favorite shows of the season. Having actual GOOD guest stars like Marino, Ian Black, and Lucy Davis doesn't hurt either.
