... is fine. Actually, He's one of the few people who can mug for the camera and actually make it FUNNY. He really goes for it. Actually, almost all of the actors on SNL are top-notch. It's just the writing that fails them. The laughs I had tonight were almost entirely due to little touches added by the actors. As always, the writing in SNL is labored, labored filler. They always talk about how they cut so much stuff in rehearsal-- Am I the only one who thinks maybe they should keep all that stuff, so the sketches are half as long? Look at the KIDS IN THE HALL... The reason a lot of their stuff worked is they were (mostly) merciless with the length of their sketches... A premise lasted just as long as it stayed funny, or transformed itself into a second act. If it couldn't outgrow its own premise, it FUCKING ENDED. Not like SNL, in which the 'Scared Straight' guy is allowed to go through every goddamned movie from the eighties. 'Macgruber' stands out because it was the only sketch that relied mostly on writing and direction. And take note: It was delivered in concise, bite-sized bursts.

MacGruber is yet another Forte recurring that has one facet - that was run into the ground in the first appearance. Why oh why does Lorne think he's funny? Why was the premise of every LeBoef appearance a qustioning of his sexuality? Even if they're trying to tell us something, can we get a little variety? Other than a 20 years too late Match Game parody? And another thing - is every Samberg Short either "Laser Cats" - a one-joke-wonder which was never funny - or a penis joke with a celebrity? Is this what passes for funny in Long Island? MMJ was great, however...

The hacking of the Clinton cold open...
by jimmy rabbitte
May 11th, 2008
03:44:04 PM
...I just have to laugh at lunatics who do stuff like that. They are completely irrational. Usually people who support the liberal side of the aisle are the ones waving the free speech flag. But, start saying things about Hillary Clinton and suddenly they don't like free speech so much.

The hypocrisy is so thick you can carve it like the Thanksgiving bird. When you think about it; the message they send by hacking an SNL sketch is, "free speech is fine as long as I agree with what is being said." It's very Orwellian. Sure speech is free, it's just that some speech is more free than other speech.

Lastly, having watched the monologue; it did feel like it was more editorial than humorous. However, the SNL writers and performers have every right to state their opinion; and it's not the first time they did a sketch that wasn't all that funny.

the saddest thing about republicans
by smackfu
May 11th, 2008
05:23:09 PM
is that they resent the liberals for ultimately trying to help them. These people are trying to dig YOUR country out of the grave 8 years of republican presidency has put you in and your desire to feel like you're right is so overpowering you'll never see it. You people seriously need saving from yourselves, modern-age republican presidents are trainwrecks, they do the worst things to your country and to the world in general. Then a dem comes along (cough clinton) and makes your country the most successfull and debt-free it's been in ages and you still do nothing but spew venom and try to find your petty reasons to shit on them. Now , again a liberal is going to go into office, and gradually repair the damage, and even then you're *Actually going to resent them even though they brought you prosperity and fixed up all the fuckups your candidate made*.
ummmmmmmm...
by jimmy rabbitte
May 11th, 2008
06:23:24 PM
First of all, SNL taking any kind of a dig at Hillary Clinton is not an example of Republicans dumping on a Democrat. NBC has become Barack Obama's televised campaign headquarters; and that political stance has now trickled down to SNL. It was a liberal show on a liberal network dumping on a liberal candidate. Second of all, taxes and gas prices were both on the steady increase all during Bill Clinton's time in office. Wages did not go up all that much, and health care costs went out of control. That was a system that was supposed have gotten fixed during the 90's by... oh that's right... Hillary Clinton. She couldn't do it then; and nothing she has said so far makes her sound as though she could do it now. ...And what's with Clinton saying her constituents won't vote for Obama because he's black? That's not at all P.C. especially for a candidate from a P.C. banner waving party. The interesting thing to see is whether the super delegates try to impose their own will on the nomination. Clinton cannot over take Obama in primary delegates. Obama has won the majority in a fair fight. The super delegates could sway it back to Clinton; but then they'd be going against the will of the people. That would be a disaster for the Democratic party. It really is time for Clinton to bow out of the race; and let Obama concentrate on a strategy to run against McCain.

I've never been big on Forte in the past, but between MacGruber, his guest spot on How I Met Your Mother, and his episode of Conchords, he has grown on me. I still don't think much of his recurring characters other than MacGruber and The Falconer-and his version of Bush was by FAR the worst...but right now he and Bill Hader are the best things going at SNL...Samberg is only funny in digital shorts, and none of the women are funny anymore.
