I am positive Kevin Smith is probably one of the funniest and interesting people to have as a friend. This post is no way meant to disaparage Kevin Smith as a person. That said, with the exception of Dogma, I don't understand the appeal of his films. Smith gets the greenlight for his projects and opts for potty humor and inane laughs as opposed to making a film about something important. Kevin Smith wastes our time with this shite.

The Saddest part of this is that I've met people who have the entire Kevin Smith collection, and because of it, they see and/or think of themselves as some sort of avant garde film buff, with witty yet delicate tastes. I love a good laugh, and some times, a good dirty joke is perfect, or the F bomb couldn't be more appropriate, maybe even 3 or 4 times. Kevin Smith is thought to have one of the highest IQs of his peers, I want him to viscerally engage me, and he hasn't yet. So, you could say, this is about me, these are my issues. Does your mom drag you to each of his new releases? If so, be angry with her, not with other people you have never met who derive entertainment from K. Smith. Cheech and Chong had their place way back when, and now its Smith's turn. So what if he reuses some jokes, they are still funny! And as for Kevin Smith being an authority on comics, even if you dont care for the comics he has written, he is still an authority on subject, in much the same way that University professors can be authorities on things such as English literature without being best selling authors themselves. It comes from depth of knowledge from studying the material and does not always translate to being able to produce it. I have enjoyed some of the comics he has written, they havent blown me away, but neither were they the worst I have read.

Art is all about perspective and is highly subjective. Who are any of you to say that Smith's films aren't art? Half of the "art" I see hanging in museums looks like a 4 year old threw a bunch of paint at a canvas. Is that art? To some people, yes, it is. If you don't enjoy his films, feel free to express yourself. Call the man a no talent hack (he does this himself) or piss all over his films. But what you shouldn't do is belittle other people for enjoying his work. Some of you take these compliments to Smith's films as personal insults against yourselves. Which doesn't even make sense. Look, I enjoy Kevin Smith to a point. The guy is a fantastic writer at times and he can suck at times. "What's a Nubian?" Brilliant. The name Ollie Trinkie, not so much. The same can be true for his directing. I actually think Jersey Girl was a great movie. But if you were expecting Clerks, Chasing Amy, Mallrats, or JASBSB, you were going to hate it. My only complaint about Kevin Smith is that while I like the Askewniverse characters, I just want him to grow up, get a directing style, and challenge himself again. Clerks was great because he had something to prove. Dogma & JASBSB was just phoning it in. I am actually hoping he does well with this movie, and it's a step in the right direction. Because if you are a fan, you've got to realize that at some point, a 50 year old Silent Bob just isn't going to be funny anymore.

But I do have many friends with PhDs or currently working towards them at this time, and as it happens many of us LOVE to sit around and talk about dick and fart jokes. I dont smoke pot, but I have nothing against it if you do(in moderation). Marijuana is a lot less harmful than alcohol , or even tobacco, though I dont condone its abuse, let me be clear on that. (I was referring to PhDs in things such as literature, not the sciences, though you can come across some louts with PhDs in science also if you look hard enough). My wife worked there and one day the food court was filled with extras and the food services trucks were outside, so not only does Smith reference DOTD obliguely with those shirts, he filmed at least a bit of the movie in their own 'house'.

Can you imagine driving past a shopping center in February and seeing Christmas decorations still up? Like we haven't endured enough? Smith gets props for fucking with an entire population and then filming outside Ralph's Army Surplus during business hours to boot. There was rigging parked in the mall for months, he is definitely showing you what the place looks like today (Great Zombie Walk, btw.)The guy popped into Phantom even, so that's how he's playing his nerd card for real. We might be getting used to the guy shooting around Pittsburgh, so this is a nice nod to the regions minimal film history. This movies skyline will be DREARY.

Is that he's so anal about his scripts, that it seems he doesn't allow the actors to do their jobs. If they go off page, OH NOOOO! it's not exactly what I wrote. Well, often times the words just seem forced, or performances stilted, most likely because his direction is just "Say the words." He's a great writer, for sure, but a director works with actors and allows them to become part of the process. Directing isn't about composition and camera lenses. It's about setting tone and shaping performances. Something Smith's films sorely lack. He seems like a really nice guy, though.

The reason people think talkbackers are cunts si because so many arseholes on here have nothing better to do than look at threads about stuff they have no interest in and bitch! Seriously, some of you have ripped Smith for one small inside joke sweatshirt some characters wear! Fucksake, get out there and do something useful with your lives! On topic, I like the fact that Smith is moving away from the old flicks/characters. Much as I love 'em, he needs to move on a bit and grow.

I'm not usually one to say anything positive about Kevin Smith (I think he's as overrated a director as the next guy), but I have to say that I quite like REAPER. Now I'm sure he might not want to hear that as he's shooting for more success in the movie business, but let's face it, he hasn't done anything quality wise since...well...since CLERKS, and maybe MALLRATS. Okay, there were a few moments in JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKES BACK. It's been a long time coming for him in the film industry. Maybe this REAPER thing is a good sign for him. Maybe he should get more involved with it. Get back to his roots a little more. Redefine himself so to speak. Then come back and make a movie that he can put his heart and soul in. Not just something that he thinks is clever with witty dialog. In any event, this is supposed to be a positive post. Just to say, hey, I like REAPER. Even though the premise has been done a time or two before, the casting is top notch. And the dialog really works.

with you Cowboy. Although I'd be a hypocrite, cause if there's a person I feel is crazy overrated (cough, JJ Abrams, cough), I sometimes duck my head in and offer up my opinion. I don't ever seem to match the viciousness here though. Meow! I was a big fan of Smith's early stuff. Loved Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy. I've been a little underwhelmed with his recent stuff, but it's not like it even approaches the worst crap out there. I'll give this a look and then decide if I like it (what a novel concept). Oh, and justanothermoviefan, that's a really interesting theory on why his stuff sometimes doesn't work. I'm buying what you're selling.
