Kostner is bucking the trend of trying to catch fire in a bottle twice.. Dances with Wolves is an epic movie that will stand up as one of the classics of "our" generation... Perhaps Kostner doesn't want to take the chance of the sequel not living up to the original.. I can't blame him.. Or maybe the script just sucks...

Why exactly they want to make this movie, but whatever. A few years ago I remember reading Costner was working on another western. I don't know if he still is now though.

Viggo Mortensen is like that greatest actor ever according to this site. I mean he was in Eastern Promises! And A History of Violence! Both of which came off as pilots to the same HBO show that never came to be. Viggo needs to go back to playing bad guy roles or give Sean Bean back the career he never got. Viggo was awesome in the Prophecy, some of the shit he said in that movie was great. And he worked in LOTR, but I don't think he is good enough to stand on his own (Hidalgo?). And all the Eastern and Violence lovers need to go eat themselves, go watch early Cronenberg and you'll see that those movies may as well been directed by Antoine Fuqua. Kevin is smart to not do this, unlike Ford. The upside to Fords move is that Indy will make shit tons of money if it sucks or not. A bad Dancing with the Wolves: The Streets, would mean box office flop and another nail in Kevin’s already sealed coffin. Just keep touring with your band Kevin. Maybe team up with Al Gore and show Waterworld along side with An Inconvenient Truth to show that in the future movies will be this terrible.
How much does the script have to suck for Costner to pass?

He's probably pulling a move like that douchebag writer for the new Knight Rider series. I'll bet he's all, "I'm Kevin Costner. I starred in Waterworld and The Postman. I have a reputation to think about."

The charm of Dances With Wolves was, it was a new way of doing the "cowboys and indians" story. The Holy Road sounds like it be very similar to every other western ever made.

Ditch Wincer and get Costner in the director's chair!

Seriously, Wincer has made ONE good film (Lonesome Dove) and that's partially because he had the greatest cast in the world. Everything else he's done has been TERRIBLE! Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles? I couldn't even make it through his Lonesome Dove prequel. Terrible, terrible choice for this film.

Looked like he was going to become a solid B-Average director in the early 90's with Free Willy/Quigly Down Under/Lonesome Dove/Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man (which I thought came out in the 80's, and is in the so bad its good territory) then he make crap like Operation Dumbo Drop/Phantom. Awww what am I saying, this guy was never going to make anything great, Quigly was his best work, the Willy is what he'll be known for.

I just wanted to chime in to lend my support to The Phantom. I thought it was a wonderful throwback to '30s/'40s adventure serials. It may not be on the level of The Rocketeer, but the production design is great, the story is fun and it doesn't take itself too seriously. (Also, Patrick McGoohan was awesome as the Phantom's father. Would love to have seen him as the Phantom back in the day...)
Liked him in Silverado better than Dances..

I read just the other day that Kasdan "felt bad" about cutting some flashbacks from "The Big Chill" with Costner's dead character and cast him in Silverado to make up for it. He was good, funny, energetic, and had more than one dimension. I didn't like him in Dances near as much. The monotone voiceovers didn't help. I've always wondered it that movie would have been better with someone else playing Dunbar. Overall, I liked the movie quite a bit as the rest of the cast were spot on, the score is marvelous, and it's a good story. Silverado was a different critter, but I just like it better, especially after repeated viewings. I like Viggo, although A History Of Violence and Eastern Promises weren't that great. He was a damn fine Aragorn, I guess. Still, I'd rather see a wooden Costner reprise of Dunbar rather than have Viggo or someone else take the role. Haven't read the book, but I'm kind of interested in doing so now.
Bad idea w/o Costner

This movie is a definite bomb w/o Costner coming back to reprise the role. I'd even want to see him back behind the camera. He's a talented actor and a good director with the right material. He's much better than this hack they have attached. If he isn't in this, they are going to have to sell this as something other than Dances With Wolves 2. You can't have a sequel without the guy who crushed the role in the original. Bad bad idea. Scrap it w/o him and make something else.

I agree with 100%. Some might use the James Bond movies as an example of recasting with success but that argument has way too many sub-arguments and I don’t have time to go in to every facet of those movies. Too much beer to drink tonight for that. This is one of the big fears I have for the new Star Trek film. New people playing the characters I grew up with is very frightening. As for the new Hulk movie, can’t be any worse than that Ang Lee that was shat up onto the screen.

I have heard plenty of good reasons for Kevin to not come back for the sequel. Another is that The Holy Road really sucked. I am not interested enough to find out if the script heavily alters the story but man was that book bad. Depressing and boring. I don't need to have everything end "happily ever after" but Jesus, what a downer of a book.

I wholeheartedly agree re: Silverado. I love the hell out of that movie, and it's one of the few times I can actually say that I liked Costner in something. (With the exception of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves--still a worthwhile movie, thanks to Alan Rickman--he never drags down the quality of a movie for me; I just feel kind of indifferent towards him.) His performance in Open Range comes close, since he's fairly laconic, but Silverado is definitely his best.

Have to disagree with you on A History of Violence and Eastern Promises. I thought both were great. History is definitely one of Cronenberg's best films.

Wincer's "The Lighthorsemen" Was Good

Wincer's WWI film, "The Lighthorsemen," was quite good. It featured great cinematography by Dean Semler, who also did "Dances With Wolves" and "The Road Warrior." That said, Dunbar's story ended well in "DWW," so a sequel seems unnecessary.

and I don't blame Costner. The book does not focus on Costner's character that much and when it does, author Michael Blake wants us to believe that after 11 years, John Dunbar (Dances With Wolves) is COMPLETELY out of touch with who he was. I didn't buy it. Now excuse me as I put on track 12 of John Barry's awesome score to "Dances With Wolves"...

Movies where the main character changed and made more money...

Um, I can give you one movie where the sequel outdid the original when the role was recast: Silence of the Lambs. Sure, Brian Cox's Hannibal wasn't the main character of Manhunter, but that recasting is what made Lambs the blockbuster Manhunter never could be.
Another sequel where the main character was recast and made more

Jack Ryan. Hunt for Red October made $120 million in the U.S. with Alec Baldwin in the role. Though Patriot Games didn't fare as well, Clear and Present Danger with Harrison Ford in the role made $122 million. Not to be a smart ass, just pointing out a sequel with a recast main character can outgross the original actor.
Maybe it's time for Kevin to move to television.

And I don't mean that as a putdown either, there's a lot of good stuff out there these days, mostly on cable. Its worked for a lot of respected actors who don't necessarily put asses in theater seats anymore like Kiefer Sutherland Glen Close, Forest Whitaker, Kyra Sedgwick, Holly Hunter, and Edward James Olmos to name few. Maybe Costner could find himself a nice dramatic lead role on FX or HBO.

I think costner did such a tremendous job with DWW that he just can't match it...

I mean waterworld is not without it's faults, but damn i love that film. Solid script, great action and fantastic score which really launched james newton howard into the big league.

I didn't mind the postman either. it's fucking loong fer sure but it's a great chill out flick.

Robin hood was pretty trashy. but it was a great time for cinema goers when costner was making these flicks.

The thing that bothered me about Waterworld.

was why people were trying to kill Aqua-Costner instead of begging them to screw their daughters and create a race of amphibious humans.
