I was watching it on TV the other day and I realized how much dopey fucking dialog is in it and some of the action, if the movie was made today, would be ridiculed to no end. So FUCK UP with all the "Raiders is untouchable" horseshit! This new Indy looks like an Indy movie. Last Crusae is probably the most all round entertaining of the 3 so far. So long as this one is fun that's all I can hope for. People need to chill the fuck out and stop expecting the 2nd coming like they did with the new Star Wars flicks...

Raiders was simply too good, while the next two films relegated everyone to supporting straightmen and general bumbling buffoonery. In Raiders, you knew from the very start that even Brody was of an intellect and skill not to be taken lightly. It hinted that perhaps, in HIS time, he had been like Indy. Salah, Marion, even Beloc were all capable and intelligent. In the subequent films, every character became a shadowy reflection of their former glory, largely to exist only to be laughed at and pitied. I truly despise the 2nd and 3rd film, for denying me the growth each character deserved. LC's only saving grace was Sean Connery.. the man could stack pistachio shells and it would still be mesmerizing.

So many differing voices of descent kind of kill the idea that anything is universally (or near enough universally) loved. Would any of the movies we love now have such spotless reputations had they come out with the amount of scrutiny we bring to them now? Even when something has a lot of fans, there's usually a backlash. There was certainly something about watching movies without all these advance reviews that made it a bit easier to just take the movie on its own terms. That said, I was mixed about Last Crusade when I saw it in 89, so I'm used to this kind of "eh, not sure it's what I wanted" feeling. Time has certainly helped me overlook most of my problems with that movie. I gotta agree about the wonder of movies being gone too. Not sure that's anything that can be helped either. You cannot go back and love movies the way you did when you were 5. I think To Have and Have Not is a great movie, but I can also tell if it were made now you'd HAVE to have a boat chase/action scene in the last act instead of so much talking. Demands are different. Oddly, THaHN isn't a movie I'd have watched when I was 5 because of all the talking, so I guess my metaphor is shot.

Before I went to see IRON MAN last Friday, I had a feeling that this was going to be one Hell of a summer for films. IRON MAN was a blast on all levels, and I think that most of the films that I am looking forward to seeing this summer are going to follow suit. Of all the 15 flicks remaining on my sumer viewing list, I am only really concerned about three of them not being very good-SPEED RACER, THE HAPPENING and BABYLON A.D. But I will still see them. Hopefully, they will surprise me-though I really don't hold out a lot of hope for THE HAPPENING, though.

It's a kick to see stuff from people whop aren't out to hate everything. Just this week, I talked to someone in my local comic shop about IRON MAN. There were things about it that he didnt care for, but he still liked the movie. It's easy to nitpick, and you can find something wrong with just about anything, but if you come out of a movie feeling like you were just taken on a grand ride somewhere you've never been, then the filmmakers have accomplished their mission. Yes some are better than others, some are truly crap, and few are truly great, but that's what makes being a movie fan such a cool experience.

i'm pumped no matter what. for years tod didn't exist for me. i wasn't allowed to see it(i was a kid at the time) and when i did the gross-outs and tone differences put me off. then recently my grandad passed away and in the process of cleaning, removing things from his house i found a bunch of old video tapes. while i grieved i watched the old movies my grandad taped for me years ago. the secret of nimh, the dark crystal, those horrible ewok t.v. movies and low and behold i found a tape of temple of doom that i never knew about. my mom probably wouldn't let me see it. anyway, i watched it overe an over and now it's one of my favorites right up there with the other two. so even if kingdom differs tonally, contextually, whatever it's still indy. and indy(along with my g-dad) will always rock.

Saw this thing the other night, probably in the same screening as some others who have posted here... I have been an Indy fan since I was 8 and saw the ball rolling down the tunnel so getting to finally have another Indy flick has had me... well... anxious for a while. Not knowing if it was going to be any good... Getting a little worried at pix that would leak out or from things' I'd hear... One of the things people will need to get used to about this, is that this has become more of a 50's alien as metaphor paranoia homage - right down to the bad boy in a biker jacket. All that said, this is a really interesting film. First of all, anyone who says it looks cheap or the jungle sequences look plasticky or the CGI doesn't work is full of crap. This definitely has the look and feel of the previous 3. The last 2 indy flicks had their missteps and this one is no different. In actuality, the most interesting thing to me was that of the two screenings so far - one for exhibitors and one for paramount folk - is just how many of them happen to have seen it and then rushed vague, non-specific reviews onto this particular website. Basically all full of crap, using all the spoilers that we all know are out there and info from topps cards to pretend they've seen it, trying to trash it for us in some pathetic attempt to wreck it for everyone. Why would someone do that? Why would someone send out a virus - because they're assholes. I haven't seen this movie any more than the slate of lying bastards who claim to have. Granted, one or two MIGHT have, but the rest are BS. I could have written a big fake review of this thing just like those clowns. No correction... Clown shoes. Even more useless.

When I read the first two reviews of INDY 4, I got the strange feeling that they were fake. I don't know if it was the lack of detail or the general negative vibe, but they just reeked of falsity. The third one, while positive, seemed more real, but I still don't know about any of them. It's interesting to see, I guess, but I don't put much stock in them at this time. I got a much bigger thrill listening to the small snippets of Jown Williams' score for the film on Amazon.com. Now THAT made me feel good!

I really don't know why the studios fear sites like these. I guess that, on one hand, they think some of the negativity that flows here and elsewhere could sink their films. But on the other hand-and I think that this is MUCH more significant-they are getting a LOT of free promotion on these sites in one form or another. If their are folks from the studios checking this stuff out daily, then they ought to be able to tune out the negative garbage from the know-nothings and focus on the real stuff here and listen to what the REAL fans of their products think.

The truck chase in Raiders is good, but has its shares of flaws. Let's face it, you can see the ditch that Indy is dragged in under the truck. The f/x where the car flies over the cliff doesn't work anymore. The ability to throw a 200 pound man through the windshield with one hand behind his head (while he's sitting) doesn't just border on cartoonish --- it is cartoonish. Don't get me wrong, I love the film. It's just that I watched it recently, and that sequence just didn't stand the test of time for me. The best chase sequence in movies though, for me at least, imho, is the final chase from THE ROAD WARRIOR. No f/x to feel dated there. It was all created with stunts. Watch it again, you'll be amazed.

I read an interview in which he states that he had this idea, "the macguffin", immediately after Last Crusade. Spielberg and Ford thought it was lame then and said "what else ya' got George?" Lucas responded "It's this or it's nothing!" 20 years go by and nostalgia trumps better judgment and the result is a ridiculous, obscure "MacGuffin" (I hate that term) that requires a lot of explaining and time spent to involve the audience. Lucas seemed completely oblivious and referred to the Holy Grail as underwhelming and anti-climatic. Now, maybe it's just me, but if someone says "Nazi's want THE cup that held Christ's blood!" I say "Oh, FUCK NO!" I'm on board just like that. I know almost everything I need to know with just that much information. Someone says "Russians want a crystal skull." I say "Good for them, the carnival comes to town next week." A minimum two hour conversation is required before I can muster enough enthusiasm to raise my eyebrow. Storytelling 101. You know Lucas went a little Howard Hughes when his movie lost to Annie Hall. Plus, Coppola lost his marbles too, so it must've seemed cool to lil' Georgie.

of course is a matter of taste, but Raiders is a flat out classic. I was always surprised that the sequels were so different in tone to the original which has a sort of casablanca gritty, pulp feel about it. yep, the characters are much more rounded and the script is sharper than the other movies. But then again I think it would have been a mistake to try a retread raiders in the sequels - LC tried that and we got some kooky semi spoof with 'comedy marcus' and 'comedy sallah'... Connery just saved it from being damn near unbearable. Its certainly the film i revisit the least. I love ToD - took me a few years to see it, but its basically a cartoon - all deep reds and crazy loud Williams score. All the movies have problems with vfx, strangely Raiders the least of all, despite it having the lowest budget. KotCS has the highest budget and will probably look the most cheesy - law of diminishing returns. But hell, its Indy - cool.

For me, the fear that the franchise could be ruined by this movie -- or any Indy movie -- just isn't there, because Indy's adventures are pretty much standalone and watchable in any order. Like the James Bond series, you can watch the ones you like and skip the ones you don't, and not be any worse for wear. This is in sharp contrast to the STAR WARS movies, which are one large story. I watch STAR WARS this way -- IV, V, III, VI, and that works well for me, but I can't shake the knowledge that I and II were letdowns and I'm skipping a chunk of the story on purpose.

the criticism of Crusades slapstick moments but I saw it the other week and Connery's 'Let It Go' line is just perfect. A bit older and wiser than when I first saw it as an action happy 8 year old the significance of 'letting go' things that may ultimately lead to your downfall. I prefer the movie as a whole to Temple, but it admitedly pales to Raiders. Regardless of the quality of this movie I wish they'd left it as a trilogy, as riding into the sunset was a perfect finale.

They ain't even in the same freaking league. Indy is an iconic character. An archetypal figure. When I was growing up, there was a big pit in the woods near my house with a vine hanging over it. (For an eight year old, the pit seemed big at the time, but in reality it was probably only 5 feet across. Anyway, I'd go out there, grab on to the vine and swing across that pit while humming the theme to Indiana Jones. I could spent an entire afternoon doing this. Me and my brother saw it when it came out. Loved the darker tone to it. I mean what kid doesn't like scary things? We made our mom take us out looking for the hat like Indy wears. Considering this was 80s Australia - we must looked like little idiots. Last Crusade came out - and bored us shitless. STory was boring, Connery put us to sleep. And it tried to be a laugh-a-thon slapfest. Wish it would go for a darker tone again.

The swordsman showdown was improvised because Ford was ill, and the truck chase was filmed by a second unit director, with the uner-the-truck stunt having been suggested by a stunt coordinator. not to to take away from Lucas and Spielberg, but some of their best stuff has been accidental or off-the-cuff. Have the Indy sequels been made without room for such serendipity? Not entirely. The big fights in the mine in TOD were filmed around the fact that Ford was injured and resting back in the States. And those scenes turned out pretty well. The fact that Indy's face isn't seen in many shots seems like an artistic choice, rather than a necessity.

Someone asked why some people think TOD is the weakest of the first three films, without mentioning the Capshaw element. To me, she had nothing to do with it being not quite as good as Crusade. Even though the Raiders had strong fantasy elements, I still somehow find it fairly believable and gritty in places, or at least, I'm able to suspend my disbelief. It almost seems to take place in the real world, the places, costumes and customs seem to have been at least passingly researched. With Crusade it's a lot harder to suppress you disbelief, but just about possible. With TOD I just can't. it just seems like it's been written by someone who has no idea what is outside the USA and has no idea of physics. I just sit there thinking, "People in India don't eat monkey brains and baby snakes", "Those are fruit bats, giant vampire bats don't exist", "This all seems to be filmed either in a studio or in California", "The mining cart just couldn't make that jump", etc, etc. It just seems like a cartoon, as someone mentioned above. Don't get me wrong, it's lots of fun, but just seems too "unrealistic" compared to the others. I appreciate how ridiculous it is to complain about a lack of realism in the Indy films, but TOD just seems more like the Goonies than an Indy flick. Good fun, but childish nonsense at the same time.

Yeah, I could see that. I love all the Indy flicks pretty equally in their own way, but I agree that ToD does have that Goonies feel to it. My gripes with ToD are as follows: 1) Not tnough globe trotting. They go from Shanhai to India then they stay in India for the durations of the movie. For a decent Indy movie, you need that red line traversing a map of the world at least twice. 2) No Nazis. Sorry, but it ain't an Indy movie if he's not whomping on Nazis. At least they're trying to make concessions with the Soviets for the new one... we'll see if it works. 3) Not enough vehicular action. Yes, the mine cart scene was fun, but you need Indy involved in car chases, planes, tanks, etc. All that having been said, ToD is a fun 80's movie that's very much like the Goonies. It just feels out of place compared to the other two Indy flicks.

We haven't done the transatlantic DVD exchange in a while, so why not give a chance to Daredevil. I do like Jennifer Garner, so it won't be a complete waste of time. Mind you, I sat through 13 Going On 30 the other day (it was a very boring Sunday afternoon), and I did not enjoy it even a little bit. For rbatty024 - I agree completely. They're all good things. The BBC has been on the ball recently and has shown all three, and I was suprised by how well they all held up. Let's hope this new one doesn't let the side down.

Rickey doesn't dig Temple of Doom as much as the other movies, but that scene where Indy is fighting with the slavemaster on the conveyor belt and his head is about to get crushed never ceases to cause Rickey to get hold his breath. That shot is tense--modern movie action sequences don't convey that sort of suspense. Or maybe you're not a huge Crusade fan, but you can't argue that the theme John Williams created for the Jones Boys is just pure awesomeness.

But Temple of Doom...when the movie starts ans Indy is a cold hearted mercenary prick who trades a sacred artifact for a diamond and drags a child and an innocent woman for "fortune and glory", to someone who gives it all up to save some random Indian village and some children....that's fucking character development. So is threatening to blow up the Ark of the Covenant to get his girl back and care less about the Holy Grail compared to saving his father. These movies are fucking deep. the entire fucking film is based in the real world, with the Ark and the final showdown and confirmation of God's powers being the only "Fantasy" element involved...that's what makes it head and shoulders above the rest, by the time indy screams at marion to "not look at it, keep your eyes shut" you believe that it can happen, cause everything beforehand was based in reality... Temple disregards this right out of the gate with the inflatable raft/parachute scene....all the way to the mine cart sequence...shit that couldn't happen Crusade did it's best to clone the reality set forth in Raiders,but just falls a little short in the delivery..not to mention the fact that Marcus Brody becomes a bumbling c-3po who got lost in his own museum...he was as smart as Indy and ready to go with him if he were younger in Raiders...he even says so...but then they needed some more comic relief, like naming Indy after the dog...jumpin the shark

I do have trouble finding movies that fit my criteria....I like movies that don't pander to the lowest common denominator, i like films that destroy pre-concieved notions of what is right or wrong about or society, i like movies that get under your skin and make you uncomfortable... i like being treated like an adult by a filmmaker and making my own inferences as to the "Point" of the film. those are some pretty wild ideas I know...but it's what I like...and also, I never once decided that this new flick was gonna suck or be worse than the others or anything like that, I will go see it, just buy a ticket for something else like I did for the last 2 of the new star wars flicks...He got my last dollar with Phantom Menace...he will never get another penny from me...but i will go see this and hopefully I will have a good time...but the trailers do not imply that I will.

The first film reviews that I paid attention to were in 1978,when I began watching SNEAK PREVIEWS on PBS. I got a kick out of watching the supreme team of Siskel and Ebert, but I watched it more to see the clips from the films than to let them make up my mind for me about what films I chose to see. Their opinions were interesting, but at no time did what they said sway me from watching anything. Now, these many years later, I still read reviews, but only for two things. 1.) Curiosity and 2.)To see whether any of there opinions are close to what I think. Nothing more, mothing less. And for five and a half years, I reviewed films for a local radio station, and I knew from the get-go that when I went in to see any film, I needed to check any pre-conceived notions or biases I had at the door, and watch the film with an open mind. I had sirp[rises both good and bad, but it was well worth it. And I think it's a lesson that many of these pre-release nay-sayers should take into consideration.

The third best? I didnt read the review, but why is there any ranking system going on with the Indy movies at all? Clearly they are each distinct in tone, humor, and action. I suspect this one carries on in that tradition. You can argue the qualitative points of these movies until youre (for some reason my apostrophe key isnt working) blue in the face. In the end, these films are nothing more than an homage to the serial format and not meant to be taken that seriously. Why bring so much expectation to it? Cereal. Kellogs' Limited Edition Indiana Jones Cereal At first I was waiting in anticipation for the new cereal. After all, it seems to have the best parts of two of the most popular cereals in the line (Cocoa Puffs with Marsmallow Bits), and by looking at the preview on the box, it appears to be quite delicious. My taste buds were prepared for what must be a flavor paradise. I mean, this cereal is being made by the titans of the worlds' cereal makers. You would think that these genuises of the genre would not put out a cereal that would disappoint. I was wrong. The flavorless cocoa puffs get soggy fast and taste like pieces of mush in the mouth. The marshmallows suffer from the same blandness as well as looking for the most part like rotten eggs. It's just amazing that I was snookered by the familiar look of this cereal just by looking at the box and the name, it just wasn't the same experience as the other cereals. Shame on the cereal makers for playing with my emotions. My rating: 2 stars **

RAIDERS is hands down the best. We all know that. In fact in a Star Wars comparison I'd even say that it's better than A New Hope (but I think Empire is the best of that series). DOOM is the least of the 3 Indy's and here's why. After a fun opening in China, the whole movie grinds to a halt until the Bugs/Crusher Chamber sequence wich is followed by some more slowness until the Freeing of the Children and Mine Car. Love the Bridge seen, but CAN'T STAND WILLY SCOTT!! Short Round doesn't bother me as much as it does others. The Muguffin is the weakest too, three rocks no ones really heard of and the Kali cult (and the bridge) is a stright rip fron Gunga Din. I like things about the film, but it's flawed. CRUSADE is a close second best beacuse you get so much more insight into Indy's character (his childhood, relationship with dad and issues with faith) and also way more ACTION! The film moves well until they go to Venice, which slows until the Boat chase which I like, then the movie steps up a huge notch when you bring Ford and Connery together (loved their chemistry). We get the Motorcycles and Plane chase then the Tank, which could be the best overall Indy chase seen of all the films (yes I do love the Truck in Raiders too). The film does die after the Tank, but putting a bullet in Connery's stomach does raise a little tension. This one also has the best score of the three, but only because Williams was able to build on what he started with Raiders. So it's 1) Raiders 2) Crusade 3) Doom and from what I know about Crystal Skull (which is a ton, but I won't say how) I think it will fit nicely behind Crusade at #3. There is some amazing action scenes, and set peices and some great charcter acting by some of the best in the business. Are there moments when people might wish they didn't "go there", yes, but I say let it go... we get one more Indy film to debate and compare. I know one thing... IT WON'T BE PHANTOM MENACE! but it may be along the lines of SITH.

I really don't understand what people are expecting. I know that I was never expecting a modern update on the franchise with 'Bourne' shaky cameras. I'm not expecting a revamp/reboot or realistic take like the current Batman films. I'm not expecting a deconstruction of our hero like Unforgiven. Hell, I'm hoping to feel the nostalgia, but I don't expecting Speilberg/Lucas to turn back time to when I was a kid. What I'm looking forward to is another adventure with Indy in the style of last three. These were never high art films with political/social commentary. These were 80's summer blockbusters, some of the first. They're supposed to be fun and entertaining. Besides, if they did any of those things I mentioned and reinvented/updated or deconstructed it people would probably complain anyways. Some people around here are far too invested in these films. I mean to say your childhood was raped is ridiculous. Some people need to get past childhood and fucking grow up.

Whenever I'm taken out of a movie to watch some flat-candy piece of CGI flying into some other flat piece of CGI, I feel inspired. Because Lucas made it happen. Whenever I see perfectly good movies from the 70s with flat-candy CGI shoehorned into them, or guns turned into walkie-talkies I give thanks for the inspiration. Because Lucas made it happen. Whenever I see two-and-a-half hours of CGI with no plot, characters, drama, tension or any other outdated concepts of story-telling, I gasp in awe at the inspiration. There may indeed be method to the merry man's madness. I'm afraid he's right about how absurd the whole Lucasfilm industry has become. Yes, Lucas is digging up long-dead franchises that should've stayed dead. Or at least he should have gotten some one else to write/direct them. He's not the passionate young director of the 1970's, not any more. He's an old guy who's at the head of a business empire. Frankly, his movie projects have become an embarressment. It isn't actually so far-fetched that he would make sequels to Howard The Duck. I just wanted to add that as an admirer (and proud apologist) of Lucas, any flaws you could pick out in his work are largely the result of his risk taking. I hold SW (as a series) in high regard for the fact that each film pushes the cinematic envelope in substantial ways. If we’re being real, SW (more so than Indy) serves more as a platform for creating and using new filmmaking techniques than it does anything else. His movies are easily picked upon because he is more preoccupied with filmmaking techniques than telling a compelling story. That’s not to ruin the magic for anybody, just to see his filmmaking approach from a broader perspective. Certainly the fact that Lucas doesn’t completely ignore the literary and theatrical aspects of his movies, or the audience itself, is the reason they succeed on the level they do. Lucas has visions in his head, and as with any artist who strives to bring those visions to realization, he seeks out the means to translate them as closely as possible to the medium in which he works. That involves risk, and with risk there is inevitably failure. Lucas’s true legacy is not as a director; it’s as a visionary who helped bring about new tools that help filmmakers of all kinds more closely realize their own visions on screen. Don’t get me wrong, I love SW and Indy films on more levels than just the technical aspects, but let's face it; these films were never intended to be the greatest films of all time, just simply a blast at the theater. Incidentally, the films do rank among some of the best ever made because Lucas’s (and Spielberg’s) passion to push the envelope, and take risks, has surrounded him with immensely talented people that do deliver not-completely-disappointing new cinematic experiences to audiences. Anyone think they can do better? Please, have at it. I guarantee there are people waiting for that next great cinematic experience. In fact, they will likely come out in droves; even wait in long lines for hours (or days) on end just to see what is you have to offer. PS - Here, here solobear.

I've read a couple of negative reviews on this site that sounded pretty fair to me (don't see how they're anti-Lucas - they just sound like unremarkable movie reviews). And let's be honest: the whole idea of reviving the franchise just seems daft. These movies came out in the eighties - everyone involved is way too old. All of which leads me to be unexcited - but marginally curious to the point where if it was on TV, or available to rent, I'd probably give it a try for a little while. But I can see no reason to deliberately go out and see it in a theatre - unless I happen to be out with friends who are going to see it. That's my opinion and I'm comfortable with it. If you don't like that, there's nothing I can (or should) do.

That's fine, except for the fact those reviews don't seem very legitimate-not only to me, but to others as well. If you don't want to see it, that's fine. It's obvious that our opinions on this matter differ a great deal. I could care less that this is an '80's frnachise revival. I liked ROCKY BALBOA, LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD and RAMBO. But they're not by any means the only films that I've enjoyed recently. I have 16 films on my summer film watching schedule this year, and I'm looking forward to each one of them. The only one I have much doubt about is the M. Night Shyamalan film THE HAPPENING. I haven't cared for any of his other movies, but the subject of this film looks intriguing, so I think I'll give it a chance. If you, or anyone else decides not to go see INDY 4, well, more power to you. But I've already got my tickets, so I'm there! As far as what you've said, I take exception to the remark that Lucas destroyed the STAR WARS franchise. I never thought that. There are things about the prequel trilogy that I don't like, but I don't think any of them are bad films. I think the main problem lies with the fact that everytime anyone makes a sequel or continuation of a popular film, people think they'll get the same rush from it that they got from the original. That is virtually impossible, because the sequels/continuations are lacking a vital ingredient that only the original can have-the surprise factor.

You guys all kick ass. Among all the true BS that has been in these Indy talkbacks over the last couple days, there actually is some good film discussion going on here. The bottom line is Lucas dissapointed a lot of people, and Prequel Pain apparently takes a long time to heal. A lot of people are tired of hearing how awesome Lucas is, because the dissapointments have outweighed the amazement in the last 10 years. That is a long time without something from Lucasfilm that TRULY KICKED ASS. And it hurts me to say that. Because I have been the biggest Lucas fan since I was 6 years old and saw Star Wars in the theater for the first time. I love Star Wars - I still do (I even love 85% of the prequels - 85% is pretty good). But I love Indiana Jones even more. He is the most perfect movie character of my time. BAR NONE (of course that's my OPINION). I say MY time, because it if kind of obvious through this thread, a lot of people just don't get Indidana Jones. It's been almost 20 freaking years since the last one. I think Young Indy did far more to damage the character of Indiana Jones that Indy 4 could ever dream of. Some of thse are pretty tough to watch. I don't want to sound bitter, but I kind of am. I want this movie to be incredible. But I also don't hold these impossible dreams for it. I think it will be the best film that Spielberg, Lucas and Ford could make. Let's face it, Lucas is a phenomenon, but he has aged, and gotten a little too comfortable - All of us have along side him. Is it possible, maybe a little we expect too much from him? As much as I want to feel like I did when I first saw Indiana Jones, I'm 26 years older now. But I for one salute Lucas and Steven Spielberg for at least trying to entertain us. After reading this kind of crap within this thread - he still trys to entertain us. He's still delivering Event Movies that many of us still want to see. I already bought my tickets for May 22nd, and I hope those of you who WANT to see Indy kick some ass will join me. I don't care if it's a little cartoony, I don't care if Harrison Ford is older, I don't care if Shia is here to bring in a younger audience. I'm there to have fun in the Cinema. I'm not accusing you of this Hooded, but I think that some people go to some films ready to hate them, and I can't see the point in that. In my case, I haven't liked M. Night Shyamaln's movies-I think he is extremely overrated-but I'm willing to give his new film a chance. I won't be going into the theater thinking, "Well, his other movies are crap so this one's going to stink, too." And only RAIDERS and E.T. have ever made me feel the way that film did. I DO NOt like what they did with the young INDY series. Trying to shoehorn Indy into historical moments/situations just didn't cut it with me. But I've always thought that the Indy I knew and loved would be back someday, as rough and ready as I remembered. We seem to understand one another. But I really can't see any value in the prequels. I'm probably way too old - and am not the target audience. That being said, even as an adult, I still think the Original Trilogy has some terrific characters, snappy dialogue, witty ideas, and some real heart - and that's not something I can detect in the prequels. And I've never heard of anyone who has detected any - even people who claim to have enjoyed them. I find the storylines incredibly dull and the characters just terrible. I mean, in the OT, Obi-wan was a terrific, magnetic character - but in the prequels he was a bad actor speaking awful lines with a silly accent. Wasted potential. And then there was Anakin - a very poorly written character who additionally suffered from disastrous casting. Wasted potential again. The whole thing just reeked of laziness and lack of inspiration. I could go on and on, but all of this has been said before by many others: you're probably tired of hearing it.

I actually liked Obi-Wan in the prequels. I Do think that a much better job could have been done with Anakin. I think too much blame has been placed on the shoulders of Hayden Christensen. When Episode I first came out, my biggest gripe was that I thought Anakin should have been more along the lines of a 15-16 year old hothead. I would have been more satisfied with that. But I still enjoyed the film. I realized when I left the theater that I would never capture that feeling I got when I saw STAR WARS the first time, but I still wanted to see more. For good or ill, Lucas made the decisions about the prequels himself-he earned that right and I respect him for it. I guess that was the reason he made SW/EMPIRE/JEDI first. He knew that they would be the stories that folks would take to the most.

I could sit around and ponder the mistakes and falaciesof the prequel trilogy forever, I suppose, but they are what they are. I respect them for that. I'm not as down on them as a lot of other people seem to be, but I think I look at them differently. I was fifteen in 1977-do the math-and I knew I wouldn't get that'77 STAR WARS vibe when I went to see EPISODE I. In a way, I think I was just happy to be getting a new STAR WARS film. I had really begun to lose hope that we'd ever see the first three chapters at all. And I feel the same way about INDY IV. I'm just glad that, after 19 years, they've all come together again to give another adventure.

It was just a matter of having the right story and time to do it. Issues with the script are what has been holding this film up for so long. I think it would be damn cool if someone would release a book with all the scripts for this film that have been turned down over the years. That would be one helluva read!

The only Criterion DVD I own is NAKED LUNCH. I'm just not into the art house type films that they put out. MAny consider them to be great cinema. I got into arguments about this type of thing when I was in film school. All I can say is different strokes for different folks. Me, I prefer my mindless special effects films. He could've worked fine as an eight-year-old, or whatever age he 's supposed to be - if the story and screenplay had been well-wrtten. And if the kid had been well-cast. And if the kid had been well-directed. But none of those things happened so it makes Anakin's age completely irrelevant. He might as well have been six months old. Or sixty years old. Wouldn't have made the movie better or worse. But it's just the whole process of making the prequels that was assways from the beginning. Lucas' judgement at every turn was faulty. When faced with any choices, he always seemed to take the worst possible decision. Such as deciding to write and direct. Such as casting Jake Lloyd - instead of that other kid (on the TPM extras DVD) who was absolutely spot-on perfect for the role. That's right: the kid who looked exactly like an eight-year-old Mark Hamill. Who had a a hunted look about him. And who made Lucas' woeful dialogue sound meaningful. Now that kid could act. He wasn't chosen. If he had been chosen, we mightn't even be having this conversation. Yes, Lucas may have earned tthe right to make all these bad choices. But having that right doesn't make his films good.

I too stared in disbelief at that kid's audition. Disbelief that there was even a question of not choosing him to play Anakin Skywalker. I mis-typed the word 'haunted' above. That kid had a haunted look. You only get to see him for about twenty seconds - but in that short time he communicates so much. He's a kid that scares you slightly - but at the same time you're scared for him. And his line delivery is surprisingly convincing, making Lucas' dialogue sound good. There's an alternative universe out there where he WAS picked. And in that universe both I and all the other anti-prequel talkbackers are right now praising the alternative prequels to the skies.... I fear we're in the wrong universe, folks.

I couldn't agree with this guy more. And as to the TB'ers who find it dated; I'd argue that it still has the best opening scene in the history of cinema. At the very least there hasn't been anything better since 1980. My only real problem with the sequels is that they were played too much for laughs. The Raiders formula of a serial presented with a straight face worked far better and had enough room for jokes. Still, I know where I'm going to be on opening night...

And I truly believe that. While that may sound insane to the talkbalk nation, note that Pauline Kael and Roger Ebert both agreed that TEMPLE was superior to RAIDERS. And Willie Scott does not suck. She's a perfect foil to be dragged through muck by Indy, she's hot-as-hell (easily the hottest Indy girl), and her "girly" act actually serves as a refreshing throwback among the much more PC 80s films where that stereotype of the "screaming dame" was a distant memory... actually TOD is a lot of "forbidden fruit" in that way - the "eerie" India, Short Round, Willie Scott - it's all great stuff from 30s movies that were no longer allowed in '84. But, to add my ranking of the Lucas mega-movies to the mix, here goes: RAIDERS: A+ TEMPLE OF DOOM: A+ LAST CRUSADE: A- STAR WARS: A EMPIRE: A+ JEDI: A PHANTOM MENACE A- ATTACK OF THE CLONES: A- SITH: A That's how I see 'em. Love 'em all, basically, which bodes well for CRYSTAL SKULL. And I guess I'll never understand the geek-hate for the prequel trilogy. Seen objectively, they're a far more fleshed-out, deeper, and rich body of work than the original trilogy. They're slightly less fun & funny, but it's a trade-off. Someone above mentioned that they thought the prequels were "3 of the worst movies ever made". Really? Really? All that visual imagination, all that inventive action, all that sturm-und-drang? And they go on the all-time worst pile because of a some 50's-biblical-epic dialogue, a poor child actor in the 1st film, and Jar-Jar. That's called throwing the baby out with the bathwater, folks. And y'all are baby murderin' sons-of-bitches!

won't be the movie itself, it'll be with Harrison Ford. It seems like after "Air Force One", the man lost his chutzpah as an actor. I think what made him so good as Indiana Jones in the first 3 movies (and the SW OT as well) was that persona he carried: one of a guy who was a bit dorky but ultimately fearless, and with that dry, self-deprecating sense of humor that balanced out the heroics. Ford was (emphasis on "was") utterly brilliant at pulling that off. If any other actor had played Solo or Dr. Jones in those 6 movies, they might have been 50% as good... at best. Fast forward to 2008. Yeah, he's still in great shape physically. Yeah, his face betrays his age. So the capacity for derring-do and the appeal to women are still there, albeit somewhat reduced. But, if that trailer was any indication (he seemed listless)... then the SPIRIT of the man appears to have become blunted somewhere along the way. I'm guessing this will come into sharper relief once the entire movie is unveiled. Maybe I'm wrong, but my better intuitive sense tells me otherwise.

Simple fact is that this movie no matter if it is good or not will never live up to the originals. Mainly because they waited so damn long. Should have pumped out a sequel 5 years after crusade. We have all grown up with it and nothing will recapture that magic and wonder like the first time you viewed them. Also I agree with Krinkle TOD was the best one.

Is fucking way better than Last Crusade.The Last Crusade was Raiders of the Lost Ark leftovers. Nothing can beat Raiders, its a high watermark of cinema and its greatness probably had a bit of good luck involved, everything about that movie is dead on in its performance. Temple is very flawed at times, but still better than 99.9 percent of movies made. All Ive really hoped for with the new Indy movie is that same crazy/dark tone that Temple of Doom had.

I just DL'd over at Dave's Trailer Page, but for the love of god... why do they keep putting these out if they're just replaying the SAME FOOTAGE over and over again?? I'd say at the absolutely most, 35-40% of the footage in this trailer is stuff we haven't seen before (& mostly stuff we've seen about 17 times already). With the iffy reviews coming in, Paramount's marketing department isn't doing any better of a job to get people excited for this.

I don't agree with the position of some talkbackers that one has to acknowledge that Raiders isn't a perfect film and that our love of it is largely informed by nostalgia, and that this is the additude one should take into the theater for Indy 4. Raiders is a perfect film, but it is a perfect film of its kind. I don't think anyone would suggest that Lucas and Spielberg set out to make an all time classic, highly acclaimed, Oscar winning film. They were making a fun adventure movie. The reason it's had such an impact is because it is so well done. The exuberance of the total package is why we love it, and that exuberance is why we are able to look past the sort of nitpicky criticisms that plague these parts (e.g., the less than convincing Sapito dummy with the spikes through its head, the offhanded way in which the Marion in the basket switcheroo is handled, the way the skeletons in the Well of Souls seem to be attacking Marion, etc.). I'm not expecting something on the level of Raiders from Indy 4, but I am hoping for something that captures that same sense of fun and adventure. That's what an Indiana Jones movie should do. And if it does that, I won't care about CGI cliffsides or improbable stunts, just like I didn't care about obvious matte paintings and wax Nazi heads for Raiders.

I really do. And if you really think about it, you hate it too. I remember back in like 95, I was in line at a store where laser discs were on sale (this was before dvd players for you young people out there). This guy was picking between two movies.. I don't remember what one of them was, but the other was Temple of Doom. He asked me which one he should pick to buy, and I recounted some of the plot details of Temple of Doom. He was like "oh yeah" and put it down. So unless this somehow betrays the character of Indy by making him a stooge or something, there is no WAY this movie is worse than that. Personally, I LOVED Last Crusade. If it's anywhere close to that, I will be happy.

I mean I really disliked Temple of Doom. Short Round, Kate Capshaw, Monkey brains, that pit of bugs, that coal mine car chase. I STILL don't know what that movie was about. Of course I saw it when I was a kid and haven't really seen it since but those factors have kept me away for the past 20 something years. Also I think the coal mine car chase was excessively long and looked really fake.
