I'm done spending insane amounts of money for overrated films... I've collected Criterion for years but I'd rather have new regular DVD than the same old shit rehashed in a slightly better than my upconverting dvd player will show. Kafka is still nowhere to be seen but you want to give me Bowie in the man who fell to earth which came out in Criteon only last year? How about you give us Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence first so I can dump my PAL dvd? Jackoffs

I can't see jumping on the bandwagon right now and being one of the first of the idiots to pay top dollar for this new format just because I'm an American and that's how we do things. How's that for a run on sentence. Anywhoo, I'll wait till BluGay discs come down to $15 and the players hit around the $150 range. By then the 1080 TV's will have come way down. I know I won't be cool by then, but hey, fuck off.

At the thought of Brigitte Bardot's perfect ass in 1080p high definition. Worth the price for Contempt on blu-ray, most definitely. I'm still awaiting the supposed HD re-release of Pasolini's "Salò, o le 120 giornate di sodoma", that was promised in their "on five" blog to come out sometime "in late 2007". Apparently several people have gotten email responses saying that Criterion is still planning a re-release, but there's still no date yet! ARG! Maybe this signals the beginning of my perverse quest for a high quality edition (old criterion bootlegs and the BFI are pretty dark and grimy, and the Gaumont edition has no subtitles - not that that stopped me from getting all 3) of my favorite film. Yes, I have issues. I await your assault...

Blu-ray is just a cash grab, bullshit excuse to charge $40 for a movie, and prevent pirating. Movies are just as funny or suspenseful on DVDs. Sure the picture is a little bit better, but not $20 better, (maybe like $5 better). HD is for chumps with too much money.

Criterion Blu Ray
by darkkelt
May 7th, 2008
09:22:11 PM
Criterion films already cost $40 because they tend to be niche films for collectors. black and white looks amazing in hi def ,the hd version of casablanca was stellar. resolution has nothing to do with colour. black and white films shot are at least 2k in resolution sometimes higher. like young frankenstein in b & w is probably pretty cool
Blu-Ray may be the next LD, but...
by hamster factor
May 7th, 2008

it is a hell of a lot better than LD could have ever dreamed of being, and it is the perfect format for collectors, therefore the perfect format for Criterion. Downloadable might be the future, but not for collectors. Old movies can look PHENOMENAL in HD if they are captured and restored properly.

I hope what they mean by releasing the theatrical versions of The Last Emperor as stand-alone copies as the Correct 2.35:1 Aspect Ratio as opposed to Vittorio Storaro's fascination with 3:2 non-digital CRT television sets. Perhaps Storaro wants to re-release all his movies in 3:2 pan & scan. The horror. The horror.

They'll be priced commensurate with current standard-def DVDs. Sure, that's more expensive than the regular shit, but they're a small company without the resources to leverage the final price like the majors, yet they offer the same (or better) quality, and give us titles we'd never even see otherwise. I love 'em because they DON'T generally give us the regular shit.

The next Laserdisc argument is still dragging on? You know what? Fine! Laserdisc offered over TEN THOUSAND titles. Big stuff, obscure stuff, classic stuff, and all in much better quality (including Dolby Digital and DTS sound) than anything else available for about a DECADE. And no, you didn't have to flip discs the whole time. Although I don't know why DVD players couldn't "flip" the discs when LD players could, actual disc replication shenanigans aside.

And Criterion costs NOTHING compared to the old Laser days. I poured thousands into LD - and don't regret all those Criterion box sets one bit. Still cheaper than film school and gave me the same knowledge that got me into the film biz in the same way.

LD rocked. So did DVD. So does HD. DDL will (maybe, if they don't squeeze bandwidth & give us 720/half the pixels 'til kingdom come), but in 5 to 10.

Haters/closet jealous types/deaf & blind types who can't see an appreciable difference/myopic tits fuck off.

"derdeeder, blu-ray criterion will be so expensive" yeah, except it's going for the same price as the standard def discs. for a company that always charges an extra 10 bucks, that's damn decent of them. and plus anyone who's ever bought a DVD knows that it's not going to sell at MSRP (unless you're sam goody or barnes and noble). who here has actually bought a standard criterion movie for 40 bucks? probably no one, because they're almost always marked down to 30.

What's the point? There's nothing to improve, once you take the grit out of that film it loses its feel. Chungking won't look any different in HD than its $10 DVD counterpart. The only caveat: fucking DRM. HDTV is the way to go. Now I need Badlands, Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line issued in glorious 1080 resolution with a kick-ass uncompressed DTS-MA soundtrack for Terrence Malick marathon. HD is the wave of the future. It's like, Bay's old professor and she is like 'fuck you, it's a worthy entry'. I agree 100%, of course, but I like to picture Bay haters reading it with smoke pouring from their ears...

Also, Armageddon's master negative was destroyed in a fire (which is why the film was never re-released with an anamorphic transfer on standard def). It is being rebuilt, but i imagine it's not a priority. Then again this year is the 10th anniv, so hopefully it will see a Blu release, if not necessarily the Criterion (Buena Vista put out the Rock Blu Ray with all of the original Criterion extras, I imagine the 'geddon will get the same treatment).

Actually, I have a ps3. It's a decent player, lousy game machine. But as for Blu-Ray, your average consumer, ie not geeks like us that obsessive over every little pixel, isn't buying into it. The movies are almost always twice as much as slandered def, and on a normal tv, the difference isn't that great. I mean, lets be real here. You can get a good dvd player for well under $100 and movies for $5, if you look around. That's a pretty hard margin to beat.
What's funny is..

..despite Blu-ray winning the format wars, sales for the players are still low.The PS3 is the only viable option, a Blu-ray player that also functions as a game machine. What's funny is that most PS3 games are only 720p compared to Xbox 360's 1080i-p.Not to mention the lack of exclusives.Well atleast there's MGS4 which I already pre-ordered.

And those of us who were early adopters of DVD are the reason you punks have your super cheap DVD's in the first place. Without early adopters no format survives to hit the mainstream. I paid 27 bucks for my first DVD movie and 200 for my first DVD player. So excuse me if I just don't take anti-bluray people seriously.

They're cheap, blind, poor, unintelligable morons who were convinced HD-DVD would win, that are convinced that Digital Downloading will suddenly become the next standard thing by the end of this year and bought a broken Xbox 360 because it's cheaper and now are swapping out for their 6th one.
And DVD buyers will feel really stupid...
by Johnno

09:10:08 AM
Once the pricing of blu-ray drops to exactly that of DVD and DVD prices do not change. But let them be stubborn and miss out. They're probably still using some shitty bunny eared antennae TV because they thought cable and digital was a passing fad that wouldn't last until the next big thing...

You really are one bitter dude, aren't you? Oh, we'll miss out! First off, DVD was light years ahead of VHS when it came out, and the idea of not rewinding a tape was selling point in itself. That's not the case with Blu-Ray. It's not leaps and bounds better for the average veiwer. I just don't see it ever replacing DVD. But hey, that's my humble opinion.

Hard to imagine. There is a gas crisis, mortgage crisis and recession going on. Doesn't make them "cheap" for not wanting to spend $40 on a DVD. I don't like having to spend $60 on a video game. Won't be long before it's $65. When Blu-Ray prices drop people will buy them more.

Laserdisc was around for over 20 years and there was plenty of cool stuff coming out every week. People still stuck with VHS. Today when people walk into Walmart they see one rack of HD movies and 50 racks of DVD many only $1 or $5 They may of made the jump from a 25 inch Tube TV or crappy projection TV with a 640X480 5 foot picture. So to them when they pick up a DVD player and a LCD HDTV the jump in quality is so great going from the old VHS/Tube they had it is hard to convince them that they should drop another $300 and buy $30 special HD movies they cannot share with friends and family unless they get a BR system. Movie collectors will be all over HD but the average person will not.

Direct download will challenge Blu-ray eventually there's no doubt but that doesn't mean it's better or even comparable. Downloads are way more heavily compressed and don't hold a candle to Blu-ray audio and video wise in my opinion. Blu-ray is as close to theatrical projection in a home format as has ever existed! I just don't get why you're so averse to it. Seriously try watching the Blade Runner BD on a 1080p projector with surround sound and then tell me you don't think it's the shit. By the way I love the movie Gozu. Can't wait to watch it in HD.

....or full 1080p, etc. That's shit for the avsforum crowd to flood their shorts about. Most HD channels are 720p, compressed, and yet still blow away standard broadcasting, so J6P is happy with that. Besides, the difference between 480p to 720p is much more noticeable than 720 to 1080...and I think most J6P families don't have A/V receivers capable of handling the TruHD audio. I think another format is in the works, and between that and d/l content, BluRay will only have a lifespan of a few years. Those wearing their Sony kneepads may disagree.

Sony are 'trying' to make BD mainstream, that means it currently isn't, hence is still premium.

Also, no-one pays the rrp price for BD or DVD or Games unless they're spectacularly retarded - £20 odd quid for a BD is stupid money for the morons who frequent HMV, but they will come down.

As for downloads, fuck that right off for a start!! If movies, games, music, magazines etc. all become digital downloads we'll all have to own dedicated servers to keep the content WE fucking paid for. Or racks and racks of external drives - fuck that shit. Data becomes lost and corrupted for unknown reasons far too often for me to trust my movies to a fucking PC. Downloading will become about renting content at extortionate prices, never being allowed the simple pleasure of owning your favourite movie. Fuck that...BD or DVD, I want a physical copy of what I buy thanks, that way I know it's safe.

It's not in color, therefore I don't think that using more pixels to make up the image would result in a higher quality picture? I can't possibly twist that into making sense in any way. Now that we've taken the color-raping NTSC out of the equation for the first time, B&W has a fighting chance of looking as glorious as it does projected directly from Kodak stock.

Like Darkkelt said up there, colour is NOT resolution. Try reading some other posts. And if you don't understand something or are uncertain, WTF are you being so pissy about it? Again, colour is NOT resolution. Even with NTSC, picture info/detail and chroma/colour info were two separate things.

If you can't make sense of it, go find out 'til you DO understand it, don't wave your dick around here. Here's a quick example for you. Draw a (pixel-based not structured/bezier) diagonal line in say, photoshop, or a circle. B & W. At really low rez. Now do the same at really high rez. Now blow the small one up to the size of the big one. See? Jesus!

And seriously - spare me the inevitable "Its really a commentary on fascism" - it indulges in Pasolinis own tastes for masochistic cherry-banging chicken-boys. Undoubtedly, the man had singular vision - Gospel of Saint Matthew or Michael or whatever was astonishing in its stunning imagery (how much did Scorsese borrow from him?) but Salo is depraved, reprehensible sludgery.
