Good on you AICN Comics. I'm always entertained by the reviews. Even enjoying this whole tournament thing a lot more than I thought I would. Cap beating the Bat though? Sheesh.

Back in like 1984 I think I might have read an issue of Thor. I collected comics back then, and I picked up an issue with the debut of Beta Ray Bill because I thought it might be worth something later. I probably read the thing. I still have it, in fact.

Congratulations people! The @$$holes are the reason I come to AICN without fail at least once a week... Thanks for the years of entertainment.

From last week, I really enjoyed both New/Mighty Avengers and am looking forward to the "war" to begin....

Also happy to say I'm generally enjoying the X-books of late. The Russian/SanFran storylines in Uncanny are a welcome change of pace, and remind me of the ones I enjoyed when I first began reading comics. Also kinda digging the different vibes in both X-Force and Legacy.... but I guess time will only tell on those.

I'm so out of touch with comics these days. So everyone is a Skrull, right? That explains why Iron Man was acting like an asshole the past couple of years, right? And Cap isn't really dead? Right? Also, can anyone tell me if the new Thor comics are any good? What issue are they at?
Also, what the fuck is up with the Ultimates?

That was one of the best books ever. And now Loeb and Madureira have turned it back into the Avengers! Mainstream. In the bad way. What's the point? It's like being forced to watch Batman and Robin right after watching Batman Begins for the first time.

That's funny! I purchased one issue of Thor back in the early 80s as well. I think I bought it because it was the issue where he turns into a frog and I thought, "This will be worth something some day!" I was an idiot back then and I assumed that everything was going to be worth money if I held onto it long enough. I never read it.
Rev. Skarekroe reviews "Glamourpuss"
by rev_skarekroe
May 7th, 2008
07:59:08 AM
Last week in the AICN comics Talkback, I promised to post a review of Dave Sim's first major post-Cerebus comic, "Glamourpuss." I said "Dave Sim doing a comic about a super-model should be interesting at the very least.." Turns out I was wrong. It's not interesting. At all. Instead, it's Sim doing three things

1) parodying women's fashion magazines. A bit of an obvious topic for Sim, and a bit fish-in-a-barrel for anybody. I mean, you don't have to be Dave Sim to know that the world of women's fashion is vapid and silly. A few light chuckles were all these segments elicited from me.

2) drawing pretty women. He does this well enough, but not $3 worth of well enough.

3) ruminating on the artistic styles of Al Williamson and Alex Raymond. If you're a huge fan of Williamson and Raymond, you'll probably dig this. If, like me, you're more of a casual admirer you'll probably find yourself eager to skip to the next bit.

And that's it. That's "Glamourpuss". Nothing controversial. I doubt many people will be offended. I guess you've got to give him props for trying something totally different, and congrats for getting through an entire comic without once mentioning God (or God's secret female nemesis Yahweh). But the bottom line is, there's no hook here. Nothing to hang your hat on. "Cerebus" was a monthly companion to me for nearly 20 years - I won't even be picking up the second issue of "Glamourpuss."

Wait a second... this columns been going on for SEVEN YEARS?!?

I think it's only right that AICN Comics should cover everything and anything noteworthy that's presented in the medium of words and pictures. Manga is a huge part of what comics are right now. It would be a bit amiss to completely ignore that and pretend that comics are just GREEN LANTERN and THE AVENGERS, right? I'm not much of (okay, not at all) a manga reader m'self, but I think it's great that Scott's stuff is gonna be appearing here, and I'm looking forward to reading more of it and maybe finding some good starting points that are palatable to my Batman-raised eyes. Ambush Bug keeps talking about DRAGON HEAD, anyway...

There's nothing worse than stereotyping. I always hate those people who accuse comic book readers of being monumental perverts drooling over scantily clad women with unrealistic bodies. "Not all of us are like that, we don't all obsess over the chest size of our heroines," I tell them. Then I read that Felicia beats Wolverine by flasing her norks at him...as judged by the a$$holes. How can you fight creativity like that? And before any a$$hole shoots me down with the "write one yourself don't bitch" see-off-all-criticism shit - I did. So I'm cashing in my submission karma.

7 Freaking Years!

11:29:10 AM
Congratulations @$$holes on your *seven years* of devoted service to the online comic community. A lot of your readers probably don't know what that means, so let's have a little review:

* 7 years of writing a review with the precision crafting of a Lambourgini engine, only to be crucified in the talkback because you spelled "dialogue" as "dialog."

* 7 years of writing a review with the precision crafting of a Lambourgini engine, only to have nobody talk about it in the talkback at all. (Insert sad-faced emoticon here.)

* 7 years of trying to say something meaningful about the art even if you've got absolutely nothing meaningful to say about the art.

* 7 years of having the most advanced formatting techniques of any column on the site, and still feeling like the red-headed stepchild of AICN.

* 7 years of having various angry, OCD-riddled pissants launch relentless one-man jihads against you in the talkback.

* 7 years of promising to exercise more deadline discipline on Thursday, only to finish the next goddamned review Tuesday night, as usual. FAIL!

* 7 years of seeing your words blurbed on the back of TPBs.

-- Whoops, wait, that's one of the *cool* things about doing the column.

* 7 years of feeling like the creative well has long-since run dry, and yet still grinding out a review for the love of the gig and the medium.

Seven years of dealing with all this crap, and stuff that I can't even remember (or have blocked out), and frankly, I don't see how you do it. But on behalf of your readership, I only hope you manage to find a way to do seven more. L'chiam, guys, and Happy Anniversary!

So Marvel thinks that the possibility of any of our heroes being Skrulls is a huge event. So I sat around and thought what if...? I ran through numerous heroes in my head from obscure to the mainstream. I ran through several combinations of heroes. I even thought, what if the entire Marvel Universe heroes were Skrulls. I was left with the same lingering thought...I don't care. Really. I don't. If Prof. X., Spidey, Iron Man, Captain America, Wolverine, Magneto, even Lockheed, Galactus, Onslaught, etc. didn't phase me. This event is not huge.

good call. You're right, I made the jump without explaining it. NA 40 shows the beginning of the process: first they make the clone. Then they perfect the process of somehow making sure the clone has the memories of the original. Then they harvest the memories and DNA and layer them on top of a Skrull (the finished product evident in CAPTAIN MARVEL.) So anyone could be a Skrull.

Next up. Dr. Strange. Not only has he been uncharacteristically weak throughout his tenure in NEW AVENGERS, but there's a red line around him at the end of MIGHTY AVENGERS #13.
