I Saw Lightning & Thunder a Few Years Ago

I saw them completely by accident a few years ago because they were playing one of my favorite dive bars in Minneapolis. The guy does a amazing Neil Diamond impersonation complete with a whole rack of glittery vests he'd change into between songs. However, as the night went on, things got darker and darker as both of them proceeded to get absolutely tanked. By the end of the night, even the bartender was heckling them a bit. The whole experience was awe-inspiring and sad at the same time. I am very interested in seeing this movie to get the back story to that odd night.

Capone, I swear the angels are moving your pen these days. Nice writing. Song Sung Blue was the first song I ever learned on a 50 year old three-quarter size guitar given to me on the northern border of Idaho by a country preacher who believed that the Bible gave him persmission to beat his wife daily. I still remember that first c chord... What a beautiful piece. Thanks.
A Milwaukeean's Opinion...

Hey Capone, I didn't even know about the Eddie Veder thing, but it seems almost purely Milwaukee-and Summerfest-y. I was never a huge fan of the group, but I've seen them at a number of places, most recently in a suburban Fourth of July Festival several years ago before Mike's death. I always thought they were a little bit odd, and that did turn me off. But Mike, in particular, absorbed Neil Diamond and they both loved to perform. I think their story is a testament to the love of music, and that's something universal. In a way, this movie to me appears to be a bit of a bookend to American Movie. You might agree (in general) that Mike and Mark's adventure in filmmaking was about the journey, rather than where they ended up. The same is true of these two. It was about a love of music--about the journey, rather than the destination. Well that's my two cents worth. Kirk out

I was lucky enough to catch this doc a couple of weeks ago at the Hot Docs festival in Toronto and I concur with everything that Capone has to say about it. Definitely check it out if you can. Also, Eddie Vedder comes off as a great guy, not only during his brief bit in the movie but (according to what the director said in the Q & A afterwards), as an instrumental part in helping get the rights to use the Neil Diamond songs in the movie.
