I should have slipped the ol' plastic bib on before I watched that teaser. That looked like it could ROCK. The subject matter is just plain fun, and the style had me thinking about a squinting dripping summer day, and how it feels to step into the chilled darkness of a movie theater, the floor wax and the popcorn and the weave of the cloth seat against your leg where your shorts end, and wait to be carried into a brand new universe. WANT.

It's somewhat cool looking but that trailer is boring as hell. It looks like an FX reel more than a film. And...yes, Sky Captain was great. The FX was secondary to the story...which is rare these days. I loved it in the theater and I love it now.

that the filmmakers are on "our" side... completely spoils the tone of the teaser, but you always gotta let people know where you stand as far as the Nazis are concerned! Oh and Sky Captain was rubbish, it looked gorgeous, but it was rubbish; funky-looking visuals that throwback to posters of films like "Metropolis" do not a good film make - story is what matters, and at that Sky Captain failed... Hard.

Here's the dirt on Iron Sky
by Rigi
May 7th, 2008
06:41:09 AM
First, holy crap, our film is on AICN. I've been a lurker here for a decade and wouldn't have tought to see this day. And then, the dirt on Iron Sky. The film is currently in pre-production, this teaser was originally made to be a demo to show for potential collaborators and financers. What we've got a really good script (self-promotion is hard for us Finns, but we really love it) and we hope to start shooting the film next year. But, the dirt is that we're not your average production company. We did Star Wreck for peanuts and had a great online community. With Iron Sky we want to do even better with the community aspect. We've got the project set up on wreckamovie.com that's our communal filmmaking site. Anyone can register and join the production. And I'd like to point out that it's free, unlike some online film projects. Those who've joined it can give their shots on task given by us filmmakers. But the point is that we're not pretending that to be a democracy or that the community writes the movie or crap like that. Sorry, that's for other productions. We have a story we love, a script we love and we know what we want to do. But there is a huge amount of ideas and wisdom in the community, not to talk about huge amount of resources. We want to hear your opinions and ideas, because if they are good then we use it. Another thing is the resources. The budget is some 4-5 million dollars, but we want to film look 10 times more expensive. Compare that to Star Wreck that cost some $17,000. That's why we will be asking people to take part in the production, to do stuff like creating future brands, advertisements, danger signs, etc. All the small stuff that makes the world alive. As well as asking for ideas and opinions on the bigger stuff. If you've got $300 million that' something you pay some bored advertising company employees to do for $200 an hour. We won't afford that and don't want to. Why the hell would we want to outsource interesting stuff like that for somebody who does it to buy a new BMW. It'll be much more fun to do it online with people who think the idea is cool and want to give a bit of their free time and see their work on screen. We don't know yet if we can put Iron Sky free on the internet, it's obious that when it's finished somebody will do that and we'd very much prefer to do it ourselves. The main point though is money, not our money, but the people who will finance the film. As well as many other things out of our control. But right now we just worry with making a really good film. If you want to see it made you can help us at wreckamovie.com. If you have any questions I'm happy to answer them.
This reminds me of Nine Inch Nails.

Not in spirit, but it shows that the internet is a way of distributing and building independent entertainment. Throw in some Red Vs. Blue and there is a whole new industry.

I'm sure I'm making no sense as my morning upper cocktail hasn't kicked in, but I am excited for what this film company is doing and will support them.

Thank you to those who've suported us. Since we're employed by our own company for us a sold dvd means paying the rent, the lunch or the occasional luxury like the copy of GTA4 I just picked up... Though we do actual for-hire video production as well. The pigeon seems to have split opinions on the interwebs. It's actually a very old thing, dating from the first teaser poster we did in 2006 - as well as the eagle statue. No matter how grandiose a statue pigeons will always use it as a toilet. That's the rule of the world.

This one is a heartbreaker for me. The trailers looked so fucking cool and the whole concept was great, but aside from a few awesome action set pieces and great designs, it fell completely flat for me. I don't know what it is, but I start going numb after about ten minutes of watching the thing. I still like the undersea battle and the dogfight over New York, but the rest is just torpid and bland.

The absolutely worst fucking thing about that movie is Gwyneth Paltrow. My God, her performance is one of the worst I have ever seen. Some of these "dramatic" actors can't act worth shit in front of a blue screen. Pernilla August was the same way in Phantom Menace.

I felt then same way. I really wanted that movie to rock. It evoked the same imagery as one of the classic Fleischer Superman cartoons from the 1940's, when he is fighting the giant jewelry stealing robots.

But it fell so flat, and Paltrow and Law had zero chemistry. She was so wooden - I am quite surprised that they were able to remove that oak tree from her ass in time for a decent performance in Iron Man.

It's no secret that a major factor of those films even existing is because George and the gang just like hanging out, and seeing how doing a fourth (regardless of how good the third may have been) is pushing things a bit, Jolie should sweet talk her hubbie into sweet talking George and Soderburgh into moving the cast over to an epic as all hell Sky Cap'n spinoff that focused on her character, Frankie.

Most people claim it's boring, but that's more telling about the person complaining than the film itself. All that means is they need to pop a ritilin. I loved the visuals in Sky Captains, I felt the dialogue had the same flare it used to back in the forties, and the action was well done. So few movies are capable of creating an entirely new world and that's one of the great triumphs of Sky Captain. The only complaint I have, and it's the same complaint I have with every other green screen film, is that the acting was a bit off. Of course the acting was still better than the Star Wars prequels, Sin City, and 300, so by comparison it was pretty good.

Has anyone else played this fantastic RPG? It had space Nazis, Indiana Jones style humor, the ability to be any kind of character you wanted, and so much more.
When I played, I had two characters, one was Raoul Duke, who had the ability to find drugs at any time, to fire the perfect shot(but not kill anyone, and could whistle for his vehicle, but could only enter the vehicle by jumping into it(called The Roy Rogers Effect). I also had a character who dressed in a yellow elephant costume, but the costume fused with the characters body, refusing the character's want to commit suicide. He also had to break out in song and dance whenever the Space Nazi's requested it, or whenever children were around.
Fantastic fucking game that all geeks would love.

It's sounds that way to me. Sky Captain was in my opinion a truly beautiful shining turd of a film that very few people liked for very good reasons. I don't think you're an elitist schmuck because it "played to you". That's your call just like the majority of the movie going public felt it came up short. I know I wasn't trying to be trendy when I decided I wouldn't be seeing that film again. I just thought it came up lacking in many ways.

I know you all said you love the script, and God knows what it is like. Here are some suggestions if you have not already considered them. 1. Explain UFO sightings since 1945 as the Nazis making covert trips back. (Perhaps to purchase sauerkraut!--just kidding). 2. Make alien abductions as part of some NAZI project to experiment on human subjects to genetically produce the perfect race--"Mengele in Space." or to maintain their own stock, etc. 3. Have the world governments aware of the NAZI presence on the moon but they have kept it secret. Have NAZI spies or sympathizers in some of these governments. Please don't have Hitler clones. Don't include aliens--make the whole thing human. Can you let us in on any of the plot details?

Sorry, can't spill anything more about the plot that's on our website. Let's make it clear it's a comedy, but more Dr. Strangelove than Spaceballs. The main character is a moon nazi herself. And one theme running trough the film will be conformity. And I'm humbled for the comments of my team and actors, but I have to confess I'm not the director. I'm actually the guy who got us to make a film about space nazis. I'm very happy that Timo will be directing instead of me. And about bluescreen films. We don't have any special love for bluescreen even though - or actually because - we have been using it extensively for ten years. It's a good tool, especially for doing things on budget, but nothing beats shooting on real sets and locations. I guess in some way we've come to effects technology backwards, it's something we've had on our disposal since the very first short films years and years ago, so for us the physical way is more interesting.

It certainly seems that the pigeon divides opinion. We still love our little birdie. But honestly, we've never really even thought of it as a "poop joke".
