When Spaced was first shown here in the UK, it was scarily close to my life at the time (and still now, come to think of it!) – dicking around in North London with a bunch of quirky geeks who should have grown up long ago, discussing Evil Dead in pubs, smoking weed and going to clubs all night. Was amazed at how all their reference points were clearly identical to mine, but am happy to see that the show's also appreciated by people not from round these parts. I guess the language of geek is universal. :) I'll celebrate the US release by watching both series through again – sounds like you guys get some cool new features though.

Tim is a full on pot head with Daisy the more "once in a while" risk taker. I read a comparison of the pot smoking in space being compared to the coffee drinking in FRIENDS. But I digress, will this be a part of the REMAKE? I mean in the UK in 99 they were airing likeable characters that casually used drugs. I feel like we'll NEVER get to that point in the US. Plus there were alot of Fucks and Cunts in SPACED...sure that's not gonna happen in the US version.

The BEST half hour of television ever made, and that is not up for debate. So soon not only will I have the original S1 and S2 DVD releases and the triple disc set, but a R1 set too. I really don't care for the guest commentators (except for QT as there are plenty of references to his early works), but having Pegg, Hynes (nee Stevenson) and Wright back with nearly a decade of time and success since the original airing is surely worth a listen. So it is finally released, but if it is a success it just gives McG and the evil executives a bigger incentive to make a shitty remake... That is soooo fucking evil... Anyway, as everyone else has said, if you are a geek in any way, and haven't seen it then do, there are so many moments of just pure brilliance in it. You basically have two different comic sensibilities (the male and female) that manage to coexist and then at magical moments combine to produce something unique. This is why Spaced is better than Shaun (which I love - Mirajeff is a fool) or Hot Fuzz, because they lack that other sensibility. But can anyone 100% confirm this has all the music, I mean if the A-Team tune has been removed from the rave scene they can forget it...

I've been watching Spaced on youtube for farrr too long. I'm so excited. As for the American remake/reimagining/rewhatever. ..they CAN coexist. The American version isn't going to erase the original. That's not to say I'm all for it, but we don't have to watch it. I am curious though as to how/if they'll replicate Edgar Wright's editing style. It's not unique to him, but that's a key part of the series (not to mention his films) right there.

Actually I hate the bread of rat bastard film goers and the mentality that MST3K created. It created heroes that "talk in movies" and look down at the material they're watching. I have never liked that. Film is something I love - and vintage films and films from another era... are beloved. MST3K - started ripping on vintage movies - starting with fairly mediocre works - but then discovered they got better ratings with better films, that they talked through. The MST3K movie is the prime example of this. I love THIS ISLAND EARTH - and the film is so much better than the "comedy" they added to it. Now sure - MST3K introduced people to many titles that they may have never discovered without the show... but they were instructed to laugh at it and belittle the films - instead of watching and coming up with their own thoughts on the film. I think the comedians behind MST3K were far more talented than what they did with that talent. I would have loved to have seen them apply their satire and parody in the creation of NEW content and new narratives - rather than crack funny.

I understand you're offended by the mere fact that they never gave the audience a chance to enjoy the film on its own terms without the mockery, but I never thought any less of the movies (the ones I liked in the first place, anyway) they made cracks at. ...but some are so rife with cliches and just plain bad moments, that they just beg to be ripped on. Besides, some people can enjoy a good ribbing on films that they actually liked. I, for one, want to hear what Mike and Co. did for Cloverfield on Rifftrax, and I absolutely loved that film. It's just that sometimes the funniest things come out of the things you love. Which kinda ties back into the whole Spaced subject...it was a show that lovingly ripped off and ripped on the very films/influences/etc. they treasured.

got it at an unbelievable sale price and watched it all in one day....from teh very first episode teh star wars, hooror, modern film, magazine and culture references are superb... the emotion and excellent directing shows the skill Pegg and Wright have developed on the big screen with Sean of the dead and Hot Fuzz...not to mention the fantastic side cast it has... Hessica Stevenson is great, Brian is fantastic and the landlady is freakily hilarious...and then there is Nick Frost...if teh show was about him on his own it would be pure class......trust me my American friends, watch it and enjoy it

What’s wrong with the IT Crowd? It had some stinker episodes but it’s hardly on the levels of shitness of Catherine Tate or Two Pints. Rewatch the Gay Musical episode and tell me in all honesty you didn’t laugh once. As for your top ten. I love all the shows you have picked although most of them would only make my top 25 or so. Minus Green Wing - I just never got into it, and ive been meaning to check out Garth Marenghi for quite a while now. From your tastes I would recommend 15 Stories High if you haven’t seen it already. And also - Where the fuck are series 2 & 3 of Monkey Dust on DVD. And while i'm typing incoherently, The Mighty Boosh is very poor. I liked the first series but when they started giving screen time to the ape and Naboo (who just sucks the funny out of the scene). Now it’s just a Indie-Boy, Camden poseur crap of a comedy. And my top ten? I couldnt choose but it would definatly include Phoenix Nights (mainly because of growing up in Northern Working men clubs in the same vein), Fawlty Towers, The League of Gentlemen and Monty Pythons Flying Circus.

Most US DVD players have a simple hack code that is entered on the remote control. It unlocks the region menu and allows you to set the player to region 0 (and play every dvd on the planet). My 39.99 Target Memorex player has a 4 digit code...Spaced references are 8 years old now so some new viewers may not "get it", but the show is still perfection. I've turned about 5 people onto the series through the years.

Father Ted 15 Storeys High Alan Partridge Big Train (a must if you like Pegg) League Of Gentlemen (though it eventually abandons comedy and just concentrates on trying to scare the fuck out of you) Catterick - will just be insane if the words Vic N Bob mean nothing to you. The Day Today/Brass Eye - unmissable, especially now that some of the hyperbole has actually become reality. Mighty Boosh - a bit hit and miss, but it can grow on you. Stella Street. The Thick Of It - absolutely superb. Weird thing, if you look behind almost all the good comedy television in the UK, the same three or four groups, working like the US 'frat pack', are behind it all. And they all appear in each other's work, eg Shearsmith from League Of Gentlemen plays the Robot Wars douche in Spaced. Thinking about it, most of the best comedy in the UK was written by fifteen people, more or less.

Spaced definitely had some solid laughs, and like Shawn it had a couple of really strong bits, but felt... well... it felt like when you were 10 years old and hanging out with you friends, walking through the neighborhood, or through the woods or something... most of the time you were just walking and talking and looking around... not really anything going on. Occasionally someone would make a joke or something truly exciting would happen to you for about 10 minutes and then it would settle back into "ok well, what do we do now?" someone would mutter that they were bored, and then someone else's mom would call them in for dinner and you'd all just decide to go home. That's what the first episode of spaced feels like to me... Good memories, but alot of dead time between them.

All I'm saying is nobody got jumped up and shitty when Charlie Kaufmann hit the scene. And he was pushed down throats just as much as Cody. I love Kaufmann, don't get me wrong. But what's good for the goose is good for the gander and I find the Cody-bashing highly dubious. Did you guys flip shit when Affleck and Damon won an Oscar for Good Will Hunting? Those guys were pushed pretty hard. Hype's hype, it's no different for her than it has been for anyone else, yet I see tons of people getting shitty about her. The book and interview after interview point out that the MST3K crew have a great love/hate relationship with the movies that riff. MST3K was such a cult show that I don't think the jackasses that talk back at the theaters even know what it is or would get the humor. In fact, I have met some pretty big jacksses, the kind that talk in theaters, and they HATED MST3K. "I can't pay attention to the movie when those guys are on." MST3K was never about making fun of people, it was about making fun or eras and sensibilities of the time. About directors and actors caught up in excess and ego. About being able to laugh when something might be both serious enough to convey a message but also full enough of itself to snicker a little at it. My primary example of the beauty of MST3K is their very last episode: DIABOLIK! I LOVE Diabolik. I was at the store on release day to buy the DVD. When I was a kid, I DREAMED of being DIABOLIK! And why wouldn't I? I mean, good GOD! But the MST3K of it is wonderful good fun. Poking at the masculinity and the back seat status of women. Riffing on the silliness that is DIABOLIK. I love DIABOLIK and I love the MST3K of DIABOLIK. I love many of the films MSTied as much as I love the MSTing of the films. The 50s scifi in particular is a great bittersweet love affair between the incredible optimism and often the unparalleled creativity they offered and the unbelievable and often laughable naiveté they displayed. I love THIS ISLAND EARTH, but it doesn't mean that there aren't some incredibly silly ideas to laugh at in it. ("You boys like to call this the pushbutton age. It isn't, not yet. Not until we can team up atomic energy with electronics. Then we'll have the horses as well as the cart.") Enjoying movies as the kids we are inside doesn't exclude us from laughing at ourselves every now and then for that starry eyed and fantastical optimism. A sardonic view and an optimistic view are not exclusive of each other.

SPACED is basically what every sitcom ever aspired to be and then more. When I was in the UK in 2005 I bought three full sets of SPACED for me and two friends and then bought a multi-region DVD player for myself and hounded my friends into getting them as well. I literally wore out my first multi-region player playing SPACED and just got a new one last month. Now I'll be able to wear out yet MORE DVD players. SPACED just led to some of the most fun cinema we've had in ages in the form of SHAUN OF THE DEAD and HOT FUZZ and how can we remotely forget... DON'T! I've been sad, sad, sad that I wasn't in LA for Edgar Wright's programming at The New Beverly Cinema as well as his introductions of DANTE'S INFERNO.

Ok, so, one last word on this MST3K thing. Harry, please don't blame MST3K for assholes in movies. We all get ticked when people blame video games and movies and comic books and dime novels for leading to the demoralization of our society, but we all also know that it isn't true. Correlation is not causation. The rise of ass holes in theaters is about the rise of the loss of decorum. The thinking that there is no difference between theater and living room. The thinking that all public space is private space. We only need to look at the rise of cell phone use in public space to know that people have lost all sense of manner and decorum and appropriate behavior in public spaces. MST3K can hardly be the cause of people on the bus or in the coffee shop talking on the phone about the abortions they had just as video games movies can hardly be the cause of violent behavior. As my dear spouse pointed out, MST3K would be unwatchable if the MST3K group didn't love movies. They WOULD be the ass holes in the theater. Frank Conniff's last episode of MST3K was SAMSON VS THE VAMPIRE WOMEN, and he points out in the book that he LOVES Mexican wrestling movies with a passion and that they HAD to do one as a last film for his last show. If you want to see just how much the MST3K crew loves film, I suggest picking up a copy of Kevin Murphy's YEAR AT THE MOVIES. Kevin was with MST3K from start to finish, and he loves cinema. YEAR AT THE MOVIES is his wonderful year of seeing a movie EVERY DAY of the year for one year. He travels all over the world watching film in the most incredible places. He derides bad film and he praises great film. He understands much and often doesn't get what draws people to certain film. He is a quintessential movie fan that love film but isn't afraid to say what he doesn't like. If you want to see the real heart of MST3K, I cannot recommend YEAR AT THE MOVIES enough.

Charlie Kaufman is a recluse for one thing. And he didn't win an Oscar right out the bat. Matt and Ben had a decent career growing with small bits and big roles in small movies. Diablo, wrote a blog and won an Oscar. Now she is grouped with Kevin Smith/Tarantino/Matt Stone/Oswalt and to a lesser extent the SNL guy. Plus Kaufman's scripts are some of the most orginal works in recent times. Good Will Hunting was a lot deeper and smarter then anything Cody is able to understand. Like someone said earlier, had it been someone like Janeane Garofalo or Tina Fey I don't think it would have been a big deal. But all those other guys earned the spot (except for Hader, but at least he is putting him self out there) Juno wrote one dumb movie, tricked Hollywood that it was a lot witter then it was and now is a big star. I put her on the same level I put Perez Hilton, so think about how you feel about him. Just Diablo had big enough balls (or deep enough throat) to get someone to make her dumb script. I can't really defend Eli Roth his shit is over rated, but he doesn't have an Oscar and most people don't like him. Plus Matt and Ben know they are lucky fuckers, Juno acts like she for some reason deserves what she gets.

I really don't care anymore. Good for her for getting invited to do the commentary. My final thought is that her and Kaufman are no where near the same level. He went to film school and worked his way through the ranks, his scripts will probably be studied. While Codies fame is the equivalent to that of someone who made a clip on You Tube, and now gets to make commercials or get bit parts in TV shows or appear on Jimmy Kimmel. And Charlie is not in you face about how cool he is and seems to be respectful of his fame, Cody probably carries her Oscar around with her in a nifty hip fanny pack.

It just won the Rose D'or for being the best sit-com IN THE WORLD. Literally. Can't complain about that. I second Slappy Jones's comments about the gay musical episode. That was really fall out of your chair funny. And completely OT, but I was shocked and over-joyed to see that Skins won best Drama IN THE WORLD. To plagiarize myself: For the life of me, I do not understand the appeal of this show. I've watched every single episode, and while I detected plenty of dry smugness and a massive overdose of that certain British brand of the grotesque (clammy faces that call to mind Kilmer towards the end of Tombstone, cigarettes that look as if they're filled with molten asphalt, surroundings dreary enough to make a Smurf start looking for a weight-bearing ceiling fixture from which to hang the noose, ...) I detected no real entertainment value. It was literally a test of will to watch through to the end, in the hope that I'd suddenly understand what all the fuss was about. But alas, no laughs, no promised poignant moments, no nothing really...just an occasional feeling of slight, but not overwhelming, disgust. I didn't even strongly dislike it. It was like a weak, quickly-dissipating fart. The one bright side: My poor-grad-student flat in the ghetto and my boring-as-the-next-guy life feel vivid and visceral and fascinating by comparison. Obviously, lots of intelligent folks disagree, and I'm happy for them. But personally, I find the popularity of this series completely mystifying. It's as if the pilot ep of Married with Children had somehow been entered at Cannes and won the Palm d'Or.

Father Ted, Black Books, Knowing Me Knowing You, I'm Alan Partridge, The Day Today, Brass Eye, Jam (if you have a REALLY dark sense of humour),Nathan Barley, The League of Gentlemen, The Thick Of It, The Office, 15 Stories High, Peep Show, Nighty Night, Monkey Dust, Catterick, Extras. And then there's the classics like Red Dwarf, Blackadder, Monty Pythons Flying Circus, the first series of Ripping Yarns, Absolutely Fabulous, Men Behaving Badly, A Bit of Fry and Laurrie, The Young Ones, Bottom, Fawlty Towers, One Foot in the Grave, Only Fools and Horses, YES MINISTER. The list is endless. I personally don’t care for Green Wing or The Mighty Boosh but I suppose you should give them a try. Avoid shows like Early Doors, The Royle Family and Phoenix Nights. Their amazing, but I don’t think they would translate well.
