I don't know. That's pretty extreme. It's cool and all, but it's a little over the top. And impractical? Wouldn't that get infected pretty quick? Dent's gonna have to spend the whole movie with a tube of Neosporin. Yeesh.

...what a near miss that was!

I don't know--this looks a bit fakey/Photoshoppy to me--I wonder if it's a mockup or trial run.

It would be pretty hideous, but would fit with the increasingly stark atmosphere that Nolan's building. It would actually make the Joker look mild in comparison!

Something about that mouth area reminds me of Jonah Hex--anyone else remember?

Come on people. Do you think this is real? I mean, Aaron Eckhart is a dedicated actor, but I seriously doubt he'd let them melt the flesh from his face. He really wouldn't be able to get any other parts if they really spilled acid all over half his face. And talk about infections.

It's not an actual screengrab from movie or an actual candid pic of Aaron Eckhart. It's a concept art and this is close to how it'll end up since they are going with this. If you haven't read "The Long Halloween", you should see how two-face looks in that comic for they are going with that design.

This may be the actualy "design" for Two-Face, but it's also a rather poor photoshop job... look at the blurring around the nose. Expect the textures to be quite different in reality.

didn't he look pretty nonchalant in the trailer in the one quick shot of him in the taxi where his face looked to be burnt on the opposite side? also, if the burn came from that pile of gasoline, there's no way it could do that serious damage to just one side of the face, without even singing his hair on the opposite side...

someone find the aaron Eckhart pic that the photoshopper used to make this and we can put it to rest...

Another piece of evidence that this is fake:

One of my best friend's uncles works on the production team and he said straight up that this is what Two Face is going to look like in the film. This was leaked and WB is trying really hard to get them off the internet, so save this picture while you can because it won't be here much longer. Let me repeat now, this is NOT photoshopped, this is REALLY from the movie.
Definitely Photoshopped.

But that doesn't mean it's not a Photoshop image done for a concept sketch or something.

Count me as skeptical but hopeful.

06:32:40 PM
I still like his classic look int he comic a bit more. I eman yay that a director is going allt he way and whatnot but it's still based on an established character and I can practically see Nolan behind hte scenes saying "Oh look at how gross I can make this! Aren't yous o grossed out at how far I went??!!" It all just seems a bit....much. I don't mean I needed him to have purple skin on the burned part or anything like that, but going outright skeletal seems more silly than it does realistic.

Two-Face would be cooler as Three-Quarter Face
by microwavable?
May 5th, 2008
06:37:49 PM
i always thought the concept of Two-Face was a little unlikely. how EXACTLY half of his face was burned, perfectly down the middle. obviously, it made for some very cinematic drawings and such. but given Nolan's take on the Joker, i figured Two-Face would have a tuff of burned scalp and a nasty chunk missing from a third of his face. this mockup looks realistic, but still improbable.

IF IT'S A FAKE
by BurgerTime
May 5th, 2008
06:40:39 PM
It's damned well done. There's been some serious time spent on it.

But here's why I think it's bullshit:

1. The neck. Not sure what it is about it but it doesn't look right. Like the shadows are artificial, and the gradient between the make-up of Two Face and the plain face of Harvey Dent is too perfect.

2. The graininess. As someone who works in TV and uses tools like Photoshop and Combustion a lot, graininess is something you add to finished footage, not only to give it a grittier look, but to cover up subtle details like photoshop-looking shadows and touch-ups.

So my ultimate verdict: FAKER THAN KENNEY ROGER'S NEW FACE

id say
by teddy_duchamp
May 5th, 2008
06:40:42 PM
it's probably a pre-production image, a make up test or photoshop mock up. i think its pretty close to what we'll get in TDK. and seeing the toy link that yackback posted pretty much confirmed it, they are almost identically in style. Cant wait to see this movie, do you think the joker is the one who scars dent though? what do you all reckon?

06:42:34 PM
then won't he have to look this disgusting throughout the entire next movie? no way they're gonna let that happen, it's too gross and realistic.

just because WB doesn't want this out there, doesn't mean it's real. it might just be that they don't want a seriously disgusting image out there being posted as an actual grab from the movie. it's PG-13, they don't want to scare away anyone, after all.

and please stop with this shit: "my dentist's friend's uncles' dog groomer's sister works at the building next to the guy who drives Aaron Eckhart's personal assistant's rich aunt to the mall, and he says that he heard from a guy about this, and it's real."

But this is what was described to me a few months back as to what the look was going to be. As far as it being in a PG-13 movie, it doesn't look any worse than the prosthetics used in the Mummy films of late and there were numerous "tweens" there when I went to see those.
Two-face is CG
by shagg187
May 5th, 2008
06:47:22 PM
This is my last talkback for this post. CG Artists need concept art. Concept Art helps him bring the CG to life for they have something to visualize. CG Artists NEED Concept artists and vice versa. That said, this is a concept art that will be used for the final CG. THAT SAID, Two-face is a mixture of CG and actual makeup.

The action figure can't be accurate yackbacker
by IndustryKiller!
May 5th, 2008
06:49:44 PM
Although I sort of wish it was if I had to compare the two. But int eh action figure his nose is almost completely intact and int eh trailer there is clearly burning at the edge of the nose. So there you go. This isn't terrible but the exposed muscles and bone is kinda eh. Just because it worked on print in The long Halloween doesn't mean it works on screen. But htat's just my opinion. I wish they had gone for something a bit cooler looking than just flat out grotesque. maybe in motion it will be better. It looks like they're gonna have to use CG to get this effect though, and thatll be unfortunate.

But damn if I don't have faith that Nolan is going to turn this fucker into gold. The tone is awesome, from the trailers anyways, and I can definitely see this one being the "Empire Strikes Back" of this trilogy...if it is a trilogy, if you ask me they could make ten of them if they are of the quality of the first two. Two bad about Ledger for alot of reasons, but as far as this topic, really too bad he won't be able to get the praise he deserves for this role.

Do you think we cannot see through you and how you have not so subtly burnt the one American politician, the one bastion of democracy throughout this whole killing joke of a movie? Are you trying to infer that the democratically elected officials of the United States are all two-faced and must not be trusted? Must you drag out that conspiracy??? - this is probably the concept art for two-face. (which is why WB would still want it taken down) this isnt real, but the direction they were headed.

-The toy, trailer, concept art all have the symmetry of the scar a little different, so they probably played around with a few different ideas.

-yeah it looks gruesome, but no worse than the mummy, and those are kids movies.

-the dark knight is going to be awesome.

Two-Face is meant to be pittied and feared at the same time. Because when you look at his face you see 2 different men. The man he used to be and the man he has become. Even in the comic books, Two Face is easy to feel sympathy for because he used to be a good man but then he got fuckin owned and he indulged in his darker side. He's a very unique, complex villain, and he was also a good friend of Bruce Wayne and they both believed that the city deserved absolute justice.

He looks too much like a zombie or, like Mirajeff said, Darkman. It's grotesque for the sake of grotesque. I'd much rather something that allowed him to be a bit more expressive and look kinda evil and crazy rather than just dead. The other side of Harvey Dent is a madman, not simply just a lack of good. But I doubt most of the talkbackers on this site could tell the difference or care. With Christopher Nolan involved you could make his head half a Care Bear and everyone would be proclaiming brilliance.

WB asking someone to take it down isn't confirmation that this is what Two-Face will look like. It's just confirmation that WB owns the image.

I usually don't weigh in on these things, but I'm gonna say that's an early concept image. "Let's take it to the extreme and dial it back from there" kinda thing.

I say this for a few reasons. Execution of this design would take a lot of work in post. Does that extra work really bring all that much to the character that would have been lacking in a more practical design? Doubt it. Is the point of Two-Faces design to make a good portion of the audience vomit? Doubt it. I just think beyond the initial "wow" factor this design would just be distracting.

I could be wrong though. I'm not that bright.

they may use some for some of the shots, but they've already said they are going to do most of the two-face work digitally throughout the movie. they do it with zombies all the time. aaron talked about having filmed all the two-face scenes and how they were 'going back in' for the finishing touches.

so, this is what he will look like, and it's either an early concept that has been purposely distressed.

the REAL question is how can anyone who this has happened to IMMEDIATELY go out and exact some justice. infection, pain, all that stuff. even if he leaves the hospital, even if all the nerves and shit have been cuterized- this is a lot to deal with!

The inside word is that Dent's scarring is pretty graphic and horrific looking -- and that it is partially CG in close-up shots. So it's not just a cheesy make-up appliance glued to Eckhart's face.

I'm goinf with concept art, but in yesterdays LA times: "Eckhart says director Christopher Nolan “is going way farther than people think” with Two-Face...."I can tell you that, basically, when you look at Two-Face, you should get sick to your stomach. Being the guy under all that, well, that was a lot of fun for me. It's like you would feel if you met someone whose face had pretty much been ripped off or burned off with acid. I can't talk about it beyond that because I don't want to give away too much of the plans by Chris."

look at the portrait. what scene would that be from. it's a headshot given to the fx artist to go to town with. i'd hope that this is the 'immediate' damage face, hence the open red wounds in the burnt skin. i doubt harvey goes out like this. maybe they show him like this in the hospital. he escapes. months pass, he comes out at the end of this (and pt 3) and we get the nice malformed skin and open mouth.

still wish the eye was blinded though. it would be a nice symbol of his sense of justice going blind and out of balance.

WHY this could be very real (WARNING! Possible SPOILER)...
by Big Dumb Ape
May 5th, 2008
08:05:33 PM
YESTERDAY the LA TIMES put up a new entertainment article online where they interview Aaron Eckhart. The article says (quote)...

The trailers for "The Dark Knight" have shown quite a bit of Heath Ledger's scabbier, surlier reinvention of the Joker, but the producers have been keeping the film's other Batman bad guy, Two-Face, under wraps. "That's right, people don't really know yet," actor Aaron Eckhart said with grin. "I can tell you that, basically, when you look at Two-Face, you should get sick to your stomach. Being the guy under all that, well, that was a lot of fun for me. It's like you would feel if you met someone whose face had pretty much been ripped off or burned off with acid. I can't talk about it beyond that because I don't want to give away too much of the plans by Chris."

The article then goes on to note something rather interesting. What the actual HEART and FOUNDATION of this film REALLY is going to be...

The death of Ledger and the word of his incendiary performance have made him the natural focus of early media coverage of "The Dark Knight." But Nolan told The Times this year that the foundation of the film is the tale and transformation of Eckhart's character, Harvey Dent, from a crusading Gotham City prosecutor to Harvey Two-Face, a maniac whose face is ravaged on one side by a horrible injury.

In regards to the debate over this leaked still, and if it is a photoshop job or not, we might want to take THIS to heart. The article then adds...

Eckhart won't discuss that, but he did say that the wounds are structurally deeper than in the comics: "There are fans on the Internet who have done artist's versions of what they think it will look like, and I can tell you this: They're thinking small; Chris is going way farther than people think."

So reading all that, it's possible that this really IS an actual production still, and it would explain why Warner Bros is now freaking out and frantically scrambling to have sites pull it down because they didn't want anyone to see Two-Face until the actual film was released -- in other words, they were saving the shock of "what" he looked like as an actual in-film surprise. Also, with all the heavy promotion on Ledger and the Joker, it's possible that Nolan DIDN'T want to tip his hand to just HOW MUCH Two-Face is actually going to be in this thing or how big a role he will play. In particular "who" is actually the one hunting down the Joker in this movie (SPOILER WARNING)...

There were plenty of name actors lined up hoping to get the role of Two-Face, but in the end Nolan went with Eckhart because of his "complexity and this aura he has of a good man pushed too far," Nolan said. Two-Face in the film is more of a vigilante hunting down the Joker than he is a criminal, as he has most often been portrayed in the comics. His trademark is flipping a two-headed coin, one side defaced, the other pristine, and letting its landing determine his actions, often in situations where he has a gun to someone's head. "The difference between Batman and Two-Face is how far they are willing to go and how they make their point," Eckhart said. "Otherwise, we're talking about vigilante crime-fighting. That's what Batman is all about. He has a strong sense of justice. And Harvey Dent has an extremely strong sense of justice. His fiancée is killed. He's horribly injured. But he is still true to himself. He's a crime fighter, he's not killing good people. He's not a bad guy, not purely." "My guy identifies with everybody in the movie," Eckhart said. "Really, all of it is more than an adventure tale, it's somewhat of a mirror of our times. It deals with some fundamental questions of what's going on in society. To me, this film is about how Batman feels about justice, how he takes care of the city, how he feels about the Joker when he meets him and sees what he is capable of doing. How he feels when Harvey Two-Face takes matters into his own hands. It's not simple, and it gets ugly. I think people will be surprised."

So...take it as you will. Maybe this IS real and Nolan is going balls out since he's tried to give so much of the other aspects a grounding in reality. So maybe he said, "Look, let's be realistic here. An acid burn that scars HALF your face is going to be fucking gross. So let's show people HOW gross it would be and literally WHY it would make your brain snap and turn you into a murderous criminal out for revenge."

For those who say this image goes too far for a PG-13 movie, I would agree with others who have noted that we have had things like the MUMMY movies where you saw him slowly regaining form, and during that time he had holes in his face with his tendons showing and all that kind of grossness. And the movie ratings board has long been LESS worried about blood and MORE worried if you simply say "Shit" when issuing a rating.

But secondly, and more importantly, someone above had a solid point. Even if Warner Bros. was speed dialing websites now and ordering them to take down this image, it's not necessarily a confirmation that this is the FINAL look in the film. Even CONCEPT art is fully owned and legally protected, and thus no one has the right to put that kind of stuff up EITHER. So Warner Bros saying "Take it down!" doesn't necessarily confirm one thing or another, other than it's THEIR image and they don't want it out there...

...er, Backlash? The Joker done as I see him - as Nolan seems to see him - will give small children nightmares. Now Two-Face looks like he walked out of a Romero film. This is all well and good for me, but there are going to be a ton of parents bringing under-10 kids to this thing, and I fear either the film will be too intense for them or (more likely) the kids'll be fine but parents will be upset they saw them anyway. Remember, people complained that Batman Returns was too dark, and this seems to go well beyond that.

That's just ridiculous. Why does it need to be there? Because anything "dark" and horrific is automatically cool and NEEDS to be in a Batman movie? I love this obsession with dark, a word that, at least in relation to Batman, has lost all meaning. Batman is still based on a comic book. It still has a man in a fucking Bat costume fighting men in other ridiculous costumes getting away with impossible crimes while fighting impossible odds. It's not Silence of the fucking Lambs. It should still be cool and fun for everyone. I'm not sure when you (and I'm using the royal you)say Schumacher went "over the top" that it's the over the topness that you necessarily disagree with. Because this is every bit as over the top as anything Schumacher did, it's just completely on the opposite end of the spectrum. There is a middle ground between the two. You can have your costumed heroes and villains as well deep characterization without going absolutely insane. Look at Iron Man. And while Batman definitely needs a different tone than Iron Man there is no reason whatsoever that you have to wash Shumacher out of your mouth by going the horror movie route. Not to mention that it really betrays Two-Face, who should look every bit as bad ass as he does ugly, which is really all this pic is. You know, like in the comic book, which we all love and this movie is based on. And as for realism, nolan is no more realistic than Burton. If he was everyone would have recognized that Bruce Wayne is Batman immediately and he either would have been arrested within 24 hours of that car chase or shot within seconds of confronting a warehouse full of gun toting criminals. Also Yackbacker is totally correct, if Dent looked like this he would be dead or completely incapacitated if this was the real world. Let's not get bogged down in realism here.

Look, I'm not going to argue with all the M.D.'s in this talkback, but it's kind of aimless to debate the realism of any kind of look for Two-Face. Yes, there's no way this kind of mutilation would spare his eyeball. Yes, the trauma and probable infections would very likely make it impossible for him function. But that's the character. Should it just look like extreme sun poisoning like Tommy Lee Pruneface? And as for the notion of a 3/4 Face or mild Phantom of the Opera scarring... The whole point of this character, why he's iconic, is the highly improbable way in which he's scarred, perfectly reflecting how his personality is split... wait for it... right down the middle. Personally, I'd love it if this is how Big Bad Harv looks in the finished project!

in the comics he's been green, blue pink and purple, all signs of rat, infection or impossible trauma and no one complained. here we have a man who's flesh is literally charred off and we're all nitpicking infection and stuff. i have been too, and it's stupid.

i loved the nimated series and most everyone agrees it had the best character treatments, but two face had a turoise face with warts and a giant tennis ball eye from an electrical/chemical explosion. wtf? then they even fix him and he scars himself again and is instantly turquoise again. impossible, but we ate it up.

i've seen burn patients. there are different levels of survivabilty and there are 'miracles' of sorts that defy science, esp. when willpoer is involved.

rest easy this is the 'immediate' wound concept. and when we see two face later, say, in pt 3, it'll be less char, more scar.

First you WHINE and WHINE about Nolan going too realistic and not adhering to the comic books, now you WHINE and WHINE about Two-Face's scarring being too unrealistic and fantastical!! Just like Nolan's Joker needed to have a white face and red lips no matter what, Nolan's Two-Face needs to have the left side of his face seriously fucked up no matter what, no matter whether it's believable or not. If they HAVE gone with this design we won't see it as clearly as in this still, otherwise they would be hard pushed to achieve a PG-13 rating. That's why they should be going with the frakking R anyhow, especially with how horrific the acid-in-face scene SHOULD be, but that's another story. Nolan just went up further in my estimation.

I think this is great. but I also think it is fake.

What is going to make this character awesome is how they film him. The cinematography. When he is talking, anything that is twisted and shows the corrupt side of Dent should be filmed on his mangled side of his face and when he remembers something good it should show the right side of his face. Maybe even a conversation with himself between the two sides.

Trying to hide something? Oh well, this matches what I've been hearing about his movie look, however, it has the feel of being concept art not what it actually looks like onscreen. Obviously, I don't know... just a gut feeling. That said, it's really stupid, and way too extreme to be believed. For example, how'd he burn his eyelids off but his eye is still seemingly ok? Possibly the least believable (but realistic looking) Two Face disfigurement yet.

Thrilling stuff, I really do have to say. When Nolan does take on Harvey Dent's character, it will be interesting to see how Dent is a flawed hero in a way that fails Rachael Dawes (judging by many of the spoiler posts here, in a *very* big way) and how Bruce Wayne has to take that lesson to heart. And what a great rivalry to have between Two-Face and Batman- similar to Batman's rivalry with Ra;s al Ghul. The grey areas between good and evil are so much more interesting than the stark shades you find in most genre movies. I'm so very excited by this movie (and the next one too!).

Batman-on-Film has a blurb on it. It's an early design from around the time the design of Joker have raggedy clothes (instead of the final purple suit). The source that leaked the accurate Joker information confirms that this Two-Face design is much closer to the final than the still unseen Joker design, but that it doesn't do it justice when you see it on camera.

The photo doesn't quite match the screen grab of Harvey's face with the gun where you can see part of the scarring. That said, let's pretend that the photo is either a screen grab or a concept piece. Either way, let's assume that it's pretty darn close to the final movie version. Now, if they're gonna try to sell toys to kids, do you really think that they'd make THAT into an action figure? In honor of Cinco de Mayo I just have one thing to say, "No Way, José." They'd "tame" the toy down so that, while it's ugly and scary, it isn't "that" scary. Just a guess.

Aaron Eckhart's face is too narrow in that pic. That's why he got cast as Two-Face, after all. Eckhart's got a wide face, and it makes for a good canvas, so to speak. He's talented and all, but the character of Two-Face also requires a certain bone structure.

I think the movie version R'as was established as not having Lazarus Pits, that's why he talked about having doubles to make people assume it's all the same man. Even assuming Nolan wants Lazarus pits in his more realistic take on Batman, that dosn't forgive Batman for letting him die, does it? In my mind, no. Burton's Joker shouldn't have killed Bruce Wayne's parents, but not purely because it goes against comic continuity. In most versions of the Wayne murder story, Joe Chill is killed by other criminals *before* Bruce Wayne becomes Batman. Bruce is forever denied a literal revenge against the individual who killed his parents, so he sets out to take metaphorical revenge on *all* criminals. It's very important for the character that Bruce Wayne be forever denied his catharsis. It's what keeps him in the Batman suit. Contrast with Burton's Batman. Bruce discovers, about two months after becoming Batman, that the one arch criminal terrorizing Gotham City is also the one who killed his parents. He chases the Joker up a tall building and throws him off of it, thus saving Gotham and exercising his personal demons at the same time. The convenient, ridiculously contrived plot twist helps giving false depth to the Batman-Joker relationship ("You made me." "You made me first."). But... what keeps Batman in the suit after the credits roll? Psychologically, he's already achieved everything he wanted. That's why Joker-makes-Batman sucks, in a way that Ra's-makes-Batman doesn't.
