For both Reaper and Shark. I really like Reaper, and think it has the potential to become a very good show if they continue to build on the mythology they've established. It'd be a perfect partner for Supernatural, too. As for Shark, my wife and I watch it, but I watch it mainly for my wife - even if I do love to watch Jimmy Woods chew the scenary. Still, that's an hour of my life I get back every other week.

Especially as it heads towards its season finale. It really could use the love, not after-the-fact, like what happened with Coaxial towards Jericho.

Reaper has A LOT of geek cred: Kevin Smith is a consulting producer. The show is like a guy version of Buffy crossed with Ghostbusters. (In fact, Anthony Stewart Head auditioned for the role of the Devil.) Joss Whedon keeps getting praise (deserved or not) for coming up with cool, strong female characters. But I feel the creators of Reaper, Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas, should also be getting similar acclaim for being two women who created a cool series that nails down the psyche and attitude of young 20something males today. If you yourself don't watch this show, or care to begin, then at least give fans a Talkback for the remaining episodes. Thanks.

I hope that the show's writers really start to go the Buffy/Angel route; making the story considerably more epic and not quite as episodic. This show has a lot of potential and the writers/producers don't seem to be utilizing it that much. Of course that may have something to do with the strike.
Never seen Men in Trees and have no desire to

so it matters not to me. Same can be said for Women’s Murder Club and New Christine.

I may have seen the first episode of Cashmere Mafia, or it may have been the other one (I was the one with Kim Raver). Anyway, it was dreadful. Felt the same way after struggling through the first few episodes of October Road. Neither show is any great loss as far as I am concerned. Maybe now Kim Raver & Laura Prepon can find something good to do.

Watched only the first episode of Moonlight and while I saw some promise in it, it just didn't have enough to make me want to see more. But I know it has some die-hard fans, so good for them their show will probably be back.

I watched the first season of Shark, mainly for James Woods, but that was enough for me. When season 2 started I had no desire to se another episode. Maybe James Woods can join Kim Raver & Laura Prepon on their new show?

I've watched Boston Legal since the beginning but an tiring of it. Am on the fence as to whether or not I will tune in again next season.

I really do hope Reaper is back next year. It has grown on me, as did Eli Stone which I found to be the second-most surprising show of the year (most surprising being Journeyman). I had low expectations based on the ad campaign but found it to be a refreshingly original and entertaining show.

For people who say Reaper...
by Lenny Nero
May 5th, 2008
10:33:19 AM
...only had a good pilot and nothing else probably gave up during the strike, because the post-strike eps are just barely short of brilliant. Ken Marino and Michael Ian Black are worth the price of admission alone (or whatever it is in TV Land).

And for those who don't know, "Men In Trees" was the Anne Heche vehicle about a self-help romance guru who moves to a small Alaskan town after breaking up with her fiance. For what it was, it wasn't bad, actually, and the ensemble (including Abe Benrubi, Lauren Tom and Cynthia Stevenson) was better than the show.

And Big Jim, the one you're thinking of is "Lipstick Jungle," which whatever your feelings for the "Sex & The City" genre, was actually much better than "Cashmere Mafia" and grew into a nice, easy-going and surprisingly mature show.

And yes, I watch guy shows, too.

And yes, "Miss Guided" was hilarious.

Lenny, I have no ill will toward the genre
by Big Jim
May 5th, 2008
11:03:15 AM
I have even been known to enjoy a few shows that fall into that category. I just found the first episode of Lipstick Jungle didn't work for me. I think they tried to do too much to hook the audience before we knew who these characters were. Maybe, as a man, I didn't like Kim Raver cheating on her husband because he had to work and couldn't attend her event. Maybe women found it justified but I just thought, "wow, what a selfish bitch". If it had happened a few episodes later, after developing her character and her relationship with her husband, I might have gotten it. As for the other two characters, I didn't find either of them interesting either. But it's good to know it got better and if you & your wife enjoy it then I am happy for you.

I too think Miss Guided was a great show. Funniest 1/2 hour sitcom of the year (if you can call it a sitcom). I've always enjoyed Judy Greer, I think she is hilarious. I often find some of the best jokes are the throwaway ones. For example, when doing one of the asides, in the background was a banner for a sports team (I think it was football). It had "District Champion - 1968" and that's all. This big banner and there was only one date 40 years ago.

...is actually a fairly complex explanation, along with simple character flaws I found refreshingly realistic, but no, they were not explored in the first episode. The entire first season is only seven eps, so I'd recommend catching it on Netflix some time this fall if you can.

Sorry for jumping the gun about female-type shows. It's just very hard to find someone on this site who seems to be able to put their false masculinity away and actually enjoy something with a little more estrogen. It takes all kinds, and that includes the world of television.

Anne Heche loses again
by MGTHEDJ
May 5th, 2008
12:18:15 PM
I think Steve Martin's venting on Anne through the character in the movie Bowfinger was prophetic. This woman just cannot keep from self destructing. She fucked her way to the B-list (doing men and women), ABc took pity on her after the disasterous Bab Wawa interview, built a show for her with a decent cast and crew, and the first thing she did was fuck someone on the set, leading to a nasty divorce that cost ABC time and money. She's may get a job at NBC on one of their soaps, if they are still making those shows 18 months from now.

Glad October Road died, that show needed to go. Reaper I'll have to catch up on now that it looks like it will be back in the fall.-----later-----m

Another reason why you should watch Reaper: Ray Wise
by Prof. Pop-Cult
May 5th, 2008
04:46:45 PM
And he's another reason why Coaxial should be doing more Reaper coverage. His role as the Devil is his second-best (or first best?) ever in his career. (His other best role is, of course, as Leland Palmer in Twin Peaks.)

And as others here have pointed out, Reaper definitely has the potential and epic storytelling arcs to become the next Buffy or Angel. It is also the ONLY scripted drama on The CW which is skewed more towards the geek male demographic. (Supernatural skews more toward females.) It is an absolute injustice that Reaper has been on the bubble -- when, in fact, its average ratings per episode have been HIGHER than that of Gossip Girl. But because The CW is trying to lock onto a young female demo, they've been neglecting Reaper.

I liked the pilot, then kind of started getting bored with it, but it got a lot better towards the end. And it's not like the CW has anything else worth watching (cept Smallville, less and less). I think the WB and the UPN were each independently better than the CW. But such is the case with mergers. Employees, customers and often even stockholders all get screwed.

It started off as a bad rip-off of "Angel" and "Forever Knight," but it created a fairly solid mythology and a pretty charismatic lead in Mick St. John. The female lead, Sophia Myles, is miserable, though. Both in acting and character.

But no, it's a silly show, so to compare it to "Jericho" wouldn't be very prudent.
