and see the beheadings , hangings and hand chopping that still goes on at Abu Ghraib in the section under Iraqi control. Now that would be a movie.
Errol Morris is brilliant

But Morris has also been criticized for dramatizing for effect. This was the main challenge of "Thin Blue Line." Morris is likely the inspiration for everything Michael Moore has done. Morris was really the original quasi-documentarist. That is not to say he is disingenuous like Moore, but he is also not trying to find out the truth. He just wants to give us as much of the truth that sides with his agenda as he can find.

Anschluss...look it up NOW

I have an Army Ranger friend who was one of the team that liberated Abu Graihb. The fact of the matter is that what our soldiers did afterwords was nothing more than a fraternity prank in comparison to what Saddam's henchmen did. Our military had to paint over the blood stains all over the walls of the torture cells. The experiences described by Saddam's prisoners makes the Hanoi Hilton look like...well...a Hilton. If you want a very good reason for why we invaded Iraq (and why we should have finished the job the first time), read about the Anschluss. History would have been very different if members of the League of Nations (the pre-cursor to the UN) hadn't stuck their heads up their asses.

A small mistake in your review, Lynde England is not the woman photographed with the dead body on ice, it was the woman writing home to her wife throughout the film.

"Anschluss... look it up." Anyone who starts their comments concerning a politically divisive topic with the words "I have an army ranger friend" as a means to add weight to their opinion usually delivers the sound and fury signifying nothing that was the sum total of your contribution here. Thanks.

people died in abu gharaib...under our care....fraternity prank???? your friend is delusional...american soldiers should know and act better...wanna know why the germans wanted to surrender to the americans and not the germans during ww2? because they knew we dont torture...wanna know why the iraqis so easily gave up during the first gulf war? cuz they knew that americans dont torture....that is no longer the case...our president under cover of a corrupt justice dept signed an executive order allowing torture...he, his atty general, his vp, and his sec of defense are all guilty of war crimes and all should be tried convicted and hung by the neck till dead...thats right...i went there...come on you fuckin wingnuts...tell me im wrong...we prosecuted japanese who used water boarding in ww2...bush and his entire cabal are criminals

In every British news report I saw about the photos, it was mentioned that the wires weren't attached to anything and was only intended to frighten the prisoner. Was this fact really not reported in the American media?

We live in a 1984 Orwellian society brought on by fake president Bush and his endless wars fought on completely false pretenses. And the U.S. is ultimately doomed as a result. Only the morons in flyover states are still sucking on the Fox News titty in order to think otherwise... those are the fools that won't ever watch a movie like this so what's the fucking point?

you're talking apples and oranges here. It's disingenuous to compare the regime of Saddam-era Iraq to Nazi Germany. Hitler's intentions were always to concur all of Europe, and it's not certainly not true that if the League of Nations had opposed the Germany-Austria union then he would have just given up all the rest of his plans, including the invasions of Poland, Russia, and the Final Solution, and stuck with ruling Germany for the rest of his life. Saddam, on the other hand, was more or less content to stick with Iraq - the couple of times he got greedy, as evidenced with the Iran-Iraq war during the '80s or his invasion of Kuwait, he got his ass kicked (and he knew it.) As much as I understand the reasons why some people try to draw a correlation between Europe's appeasement of Hilter and the U.N.'s lack of enforced sanctions against Saddam, they really are two completely different animals. I'm certainly not hating on anyone's opinion, and if you disagree with me or want me to go into further detail I'd be glad to have a civilized debate - I actually think it's quite stimulating to discuss different points of view with other people as long as it doesn't turn into a "left-wing liberal commie / right-wing conservative nazi" type of shouting match.

...are not afraid of death. Therefore how do you extract valuable intel? Exploit what they do fear; the impurity of their souls in the face of Allah...therefore no afterlife. Dogs are considered impure, the unclothed female body, the unclothed male body in the presence of a female, etc, etc. So I maintain that while Abu Gharib might have very well gotten out of hand, the humiliation of Islamo-Facists is the path to good intel.

Lol, that's how you want to measure the morality of your country, by comparing levels of abuse with the worst of the Iraqi regime? Don't you think the US should be held to a slightly higher standard than that of Saddam's torturers?

it's got some new facts, but most of the movie (i saw at least an hour) consists of people stating the same things again and again, and some stylized photo slideshow, that looks like a crossover between the interface of a sony-walkman and those unnecessary-dumbed-down-woosh- woosh-sfx-shots we know from shows like CSI. all of this accompanied by the over-pompous score by danny elfman which constantly gave me the feeling of watching a fantasy-blockbuster. not to forget the sony product placement (o.k. most of the photos were taken by a sony-camera. but still, it's a sony pictures movie - and looks like one). i like good documentations, but this movie just didn't work for me on any level.

I've seen it, so don't necessarily count anyone or everyone out because you have not. What is obviously lost on those who have not seen it is that this film is not the typical 'for' or 'against' the war in Iraq. It focuses squarely on Abu Ghraib and the pictures and the people in them in particular. I like to think I read quite a bit and keep up on things, but this film was full of information I had not heard before. One bit in particular was the backstory to a rather famous photo of a thick blood trail from a prison cell and out the door and down the hall. In the context of the tortures occurring at Abu Ghraib, both pre and post Saddam, it was natural to assume these blood soaked photos were a part of that story. But instead we hear from multiple points of view how an Iraqi guard working at the prison smuggled in a pistol and handed it over to a prisoner. The prisoner shot a guard square in the chest, who was wearing a vest, and then hid in the corner of his cell behind his bed. It took quite a while and multiple shotgun blasts before the prisoner was once again unarmed. Much of the film is like this, focusing on what a picture communicates and does not communicate. If you get the chance to see it in the theater, I highly recommend it.
